If you go backpacking in Yosemite can you set up camp anywhere off the trail?

Answer
You unfortunately can't camp anywhere, but that doesn't mean you don't have LOTS of options in a national park the size of Rhode Island.

Refer to http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildregs.htm

Regulations of note:

â¢You must camp at least four trail miles from Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, Hetch Hetchy, and Wawona, and at least one air mile from any road. Camping is prohibited in the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River.

--> This means, for example, that you cannot came on the Yosemite Valley Rim.

â¢Choose a previously impacted campsite at least 100 feet (30 meters/40 paces) from any water source or trail.

---> Try to pick a site that requires a short walk to get back to the trail and water sources like the lakeshores around the park.

Camping in the Half Dome and Little Yosemite Valley area is permitted only in the Little Yosemite Valley Campground. Camping is not permitted between Yosemite Valley and Little Yosemite Valley. If you would like to camp in a dispersed Wilderness setting, you must be at least two miles beyond the Little Yosemite Valley campground (at or beyond Moraine Dome or beyond the Half Dome/John Muir Trail junction). Camping is not permitted on top of Half Dome or at Lost Lake.

Camping is permitted at backpackers' campgrounds near Glen Aulin, May Lake, Sunrise, Merced Lake, and Vogelsang High Sierra Camps. Each campground contains food lockers and group fire rings (fires are not permitted at Vogelsang).

---> Some heavy use wilderness areas in the park require that in order to camp in each area, you must camp in a designated camping area.

Beyond the above, the best bet for true dispersed camping is to head to the National Forest and BLM land near the park boundaries. Each has much less restrictions than a National Park.

Are you allowed to backpack and camp off the trail in Yosemite?

FOTA

For example, backpacking from Yosemite Valley to Mount Lyell along the Lyell Fork Merced River.

Answer
I know right where you're talking about and it's an awesome area.
You'll get the rules when you get your permit but yes, in theory, you can camp where you want. Although that's not the case for the first night on some trails.
Remember, you have to carry a bear canister. Non negotiable. You can't hang a bag.
And no fires over 9'600 feet,
This link will give you what you need to know. I'd suggest grabbing a permit in advance so you don't get screwed if you're going in the summer.
