Is the Columbia Lost Lake Tent a good tent?

I need a good backpacking tent that fits at least two people, but I don't have a lot of money to spend (under $100).

Answer
Here's a three star review for the Columbia Lost Lake:
http://www.trailspace.com/gear/columbia/lost-lake/review/7918/

For a few bucks over $100 I'd go with a nice ultralight tarp, if you're willing to learn to set it up properly: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/stealth_ultralight_backpacking_tarp_0_pro.html

You could even make your own tarp tent with mosquito netting for closer to $100.00 here: http://www.ray-way.com/tarp-nettent/index.shtml

Is this a good hiking backpack?

Answer
Have not seen that one in person, the buyer reviews are on the positive side. The price puts it on the low end so quality in the long term could be suspect. Here is an article on how to choose a great back pack.

What national park has alot of good dangerous hiking trails?

Jonathan H

Planning on going backpacking in summer 12', im looking for some long dangerous (and of course beautiful) trails. Im not looking for a frozen wasteland or getting lost in a desert, just the kind of place where you really have to watch what your doing on the side of a mountain while taking in the views. Im also trying to avoid heavily visited tourist areas such as the Grand Canyon. Keeping this in the west coast/ rocky mountain area

Answer
Good morning Jonathan H.

I hope you are having a great day. I am very happy, because we finished the last of our Christmas gifts. Each year we can and dry fruits and vegetables from our trees and garden. Each friend and relative receives a big basket filled with quart jars of peaches, plums, strawberry Guavas, pickles, pickled green cherry tomatoes, jams, and dried and fresh fruits.

I have been a camper and hiker my whole life. I love the outdoors. I know almost every great nature place for hiking, camping, and fishing in the state of California. I usually do not tell because too many people. But I will give you one of my favorite because the area is so vast. You can branch out and learn others from here.

California has the second highest mountain in the United States within the Mighty High Sierra Nevadaâs Mountain Range. The crystal clear lakes are full of wild Golden Trout which are only found in Californiaâs high mountain ranges. You will marvel while you backpack with 3000 year old, born before Christ, redwood trees in which not even fire can destroy. I call all these things/places, âGodâs beautyâ. You must see the biggest and maybe the oldest living tree on earth and you will never forget âGeneral Shermanâ.

At night you can lie in your sleeping bag and count shooting stars. Your mind can run amok with the wonders and vastness of space. You can point out and view constellations which until now were part of chapters in a school text book. You can fall asleep viewing the heavens and our own Milky Way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Nevada_(U.S.)

Head up US395 and park your car in Onion Valley. Start off your trip by hiking over Kearsarge Pass, which is an old Indian trail, to Bull Frog at 10,000 feet with snowcapped peaks reaching over 14000 feet as a backdrop. The Indians are no more and very few people see this type of beauty.

http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-701-s&va=sierra+nevada+mountains+california

Kearsarge pass will usually not open until after Easter. The snow can reach fifteen (15) feet deep in the winter. The website below follows the path with pictures and words. Physically I hope you are in good shape. Read left side of website as well. I usually hike this four (4) mile trail once a year. I try to time my trip with the coming of a shooting star event. As you can see from the website, there are hundreds of lakes. I have fished almost all of these lakes. This is my day only hike. I hike in and fly fish for dinner. I camp out and head back in a day or two. I spend my time hiking between lakes in this area.

http://www.naturalbornhikers.com/KearsargePass/KearsargePass.htm

For longer trips, Kearsarge pass will lead you into the John Muir wildlife trail. It does get cold at night. You will need a good sleeping bag. The John Muir Wilderness trail runs 211 miles throughout the Sierras. You will have to check website for partial distances. I have hiked the total John Muir Trail twice. In high school, we spent all summer in the Mighty Sierras. We lived off the land. Click on âThe Trailâ for images of the trail on website below.

http://johnmuirtrail.org/

Jonathan H., you can start this trip from Yosemite Valley. Yosemite Valley is on the western side of the Mighty Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The John Muir Trail is almost flat and very easy going for ten (10) miles outside Yosemite Valley. You will be hiking along with city folks, their kids, and tour guides. I have given you a starting point with very few people and no kids.

The wilderness can get dangerous. Stay on clearly marked trails or go with another person. You may see a few people or a mule pack, but all in all the experience and the lakes will just be you. Use your head. Stay safe.

You and your family have a beautiful week. Peace, from Los Angeles.

Does anyone know a good place to backpack with kids near Los Angeles?

Looking for an overnight hike with my 7 year old. Prefer a hike with a camping area withing 2 miles of the trail head. Some attraction at the campsite would be great -- a stream, lake, interesting rock formations, etc. Thanks.

Answer
I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for in Angeles National Forest. http://www.totalescape.com/active/campstuff/NF/angeles.html#lake
The Sheep Mountain Wilderness in that area is popular:

Where can i find parks that allow primitive camping?

camping backpack list

Mike

I am looking for national, state, or other parks that allow tent camping without set "campsites". I want to be able to go in, hike and find a place to set up camp wherever I want. I would prefer lakes and rivers, but this is not crucial. Solitude and relaxation is what I am seeking. Does anyone know of any such parks? Does anyone know of a place online to search for this kind of camping? Thanks.

Answer
What you're referring to is what's commonly known in the US as "backpacking" and it is permitted in all sorts of areas in the US, from National Forests to State Parks and especially in National Parks and designated Wilderness Areas inside National Forests. Backpackers load up everything they'll need to survive on their own, leave their cars and hopefully other people behind, and either follow a trail or follow a compass or GPS cross country to their goal, usually a secluded lake, with often a secondary goal to fish, take photos, or summit a nearby mountain peak.

The primary method of locating such areas is to utilize the internet to locate parks in your state, and to visit the government websites for those parks to determine if they allow backcountry camping. The next step is to purchase a trail map and/or guide book for the area, in which you'll find direction to the trail heads where one parks one's vehicle and enters the wilderness on foot, and directions for the trail, which often include recommendations for lakes, mountains and campsites. Many wilderness areas require permits, either to stay overnight or to have a fire, which must be obtained from the nearest ranger station.

Purchasing gear for your backpacking adventures is probably the most important step and backpackers spend a lot of time perfecting their gear lists, with an emphasis balancing between lightness and comfort. Out in the woods, miles from any road you'll be at the mercy of the elements, and without the proper gear, you could die, so it's important to take it slow, learn as much as you can, read as much as you can, and find your own path.

Here are some sites to get your started: http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/map/finder.shtml
https://www.backpackinglight.com/

And I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Lighten-Up-Complete-Ultralight-Backpacking/dp/0762737344/sr=8-1/qid=1168796878/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-0601339-3354515?ie=UTF8&s=books

It looks like you might live in Missouri and if so here's a site for that state: http://www.motrails.com/trails.html

Cool Colle

Ok so I like use messenger bags as my backpacks for school. However more and more people are saying I am carrying a man purse. So are these messenger bags man purses?

1st one is Armani Exchange and the other 2 are CK
http://www.flickr.com/photos/68198188@N04/6976661982/sizes/l/in/photostream/
These bags are $100 each

Answer
These bags are not true man purses, man purses or murses tend to be smaller. These are messenger bags, but as with many things there can be an overlap in styles, so some man purses may look similar, except smaller.

As for looking gay, really does everything somewhat stylish have to be labeled gay? I think the bags you showcased are stylish, and even more important, they look comfortable and easy to get things in and out of. so if you are happy with them, does the label really matter?

If you want to have an idea of what man purses look like check these http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&keywords=murse&tag=myyahooanswer-20&linkCode=ur2&qid=1335718855&camp=1789&creative=390957&rh=k%3Amurse%2Ci%3Aapparel

Keep dog warm while backpacking?

Beneficent

I am taking my dog on a weekend camping trip this weekend, in northeastern MN. It will be 30-40 degrees F at night, and 40-50 during the day. I've never camped with a dog before, but I have taken him on some hikes, including about the same distance we'll be backpacking in a day. He will not be carrying a pack, as he is too small (they don't fit him, and he couldn't carry enough weight to make it worthwhile anyway). He is a mixed breed dog, probably half chihuahua and half some kind of wire-haired terrier, like a jack russell or a rat terrier. He has coarse, wiry fur, and the vet has said he probably doesnt need sweaters in the minnesota winter if he is not out for abnormal lengths of time. This will not be winter weather, but it will be cold nonetheless. I think he will be okay while we are hiking, but I am worried about the sleeping situation. He will be in a 3-season tent with me, and I will be bringing along a towel and a small fleece blanket for him to nest in. I do not really want to have to carry much more weight than that, as it is already a bulky addition to the other stuff in my pack, and as I said, he will not have a pack of his own to share the load. I think if he is cold he will try to be in my sleeping bag with me, but it is a mummy sack, so that might not work out well. Does anyone have any other light-weight ideas for keeping a dog warm in this situation- it will not be arctic, but there may be some frost on the ground in the morning. Anyone with experience in this?

Answer
You can unzip your mummy bag, drape it over you like a quilt with your feet in the bottom, and share it with him, which is my answer to your question. Whatever heat is lost from having it unzipped will be more than made up for by sharing your body heat.

Chris Wong

i just bought a north face borealis backpack and was wondering if it would work well for high school.

Answer
YES! and if you go on north face.com a lot of other styles are too... But the borealis is great, and it comes in a TON of colors. I have one, and I love it! I go to a pretty big school and basically, 97% of the kids there have a north face! They are really durable, have tons of compartment, and really roomy, and they don't look industrial or too big! But yeah, for high school? PERFECT(: It works great and I can barely tell the difference in looks when there are a lot of books in there it doesn't stretch and look distorted.. Ya know what I mean right? Haha hope this helped!

I'm only a kid, but we'll be shopping for school stuff near the end of Aug. coz we start September 8. I gotta buy--

--backpack
--Arm warmers
--Claire's Jewelery ( priced 8-10$)
--Notebooks
--pens, pencils, folders
--clothing (not a whole lot of clothes, 2-3 at most)

I don't have a budget but I'm a kid and want to save some money. What are the best times for shopping, also?

Thx!

Answer
Right now if you watch the CVS, Walgreens, Target, Staples and Right Aid weekly specials, you will see some FREE, yes FREE, school supplies and very cheap ones.
CVS offers a few free school supplies every Sunday and Monday, so you have to go early to get them. Walgreens had free pens last week, this week it is shampoo and toothbrushes free (but you still need those for school). Walgreens has papermate highlighters right now for .29 a pack and nice 1" binders for .99 each. Lots of other school supplies under $1.00 each. CVS has on sunday and Monday this week - 2 free stretch book covers, rulers, glue and 1 subject notebooks. Also lots of specials on other stuff.

Target and Staples will run penny and quarter sales along with deeply discounted items.

I would suggest getting any items that are cheap or free that you KNOW you will use. Later in the school year if you run out you will not be able to find these kind of prices. Stock up now on that stuff then once you have your list from classes you can add on what you need then.

On Claires - ALWAYS shop the back of the store. They have the clearance stuff there and the redline sales are great. Take a friend so if it is 15 items for $10.00 you can split the cost and the loot. Also you can share earrings that come in a bunch on a card.

Back pack - again watch all the stores I mentioned for school supplies. CVS had a special that you got $5 back on any backpack purchase. They will have lots of promotions this time of year.

Clothes - do you do resale shops? We do the goodwill and salvation army ones. They have some nice stuff - always wash first. Look for upper scale/designer resale shops. We also do the mall and look for specials. Again take a friend and split the specials. We just got sneakers for $15 off by sharing the buy with a friend - if you spent 100 you got back 30 on the sale.
Target has a lot of nice basic items for clothing. Our plan is usually to go and get basic items (solid color tops and bottoms) and then add in some prints and novelty shirts, jackets, jewelry etc as we go. I give each kid a set limit of what they can spend and they stay in the limits or spend their own money.

Check your local grocery store. Ours has a fuel perks where if you buy gift cards for certain stores you get money off your gas. we bought a camera and an ipod touch at best buy - bought certificates and got two free tanks of gas. Makes mom much more conducive to going shopping if you get her free gas....

Internal frame or external?
With the pockets or without?
How to adjust?
How to load properly?
Thanks.

Answer
http://www.thebackpacker.com/beginners/backpacks.php
External frames are noted to be easier to pack your equipment in because they usually have more pockets and it is easier to tie things on the outside. An internal frame pack is known to be far more comfortable than an external frame. Where the external frame usually only touches your back in a few places, the internal frame is made to fit straight on your back, more evenly distributing the weight.

What do you think about the Dell mini 12?

Michelle

Ok i know people think this is crappy, but let me tell you that i already have an apple computer, the big screen one. Im just looking for a nice portable laptop or net book for me to use. All i want is fast internet, word, and so i can go on video chat. * And can you do ichat or video chat with an apple with the dell mini?

Answer
I have one. I have used similar machines. I have both 3-cell and 6-cell battery as well.

The biggest nuisances on this computer are the tiny <>? and ,./ keys. However, after typing on it for a while, it doesn't seem like anything.

The other nuisance is if you are not typing very diligently, you can brush the edge of the touch pad. That said, the touch pad is very nice although not multi-touch.

This doesn't have 802.1n, but most people have 802.1b or g anyway. The wifi antenna works better than the mini 9 and most couple of year old laptops from my experience. For instance, at my friend's house, he can only see his own network while I can see all four of his neighbors' networks. It is nice to have a built-in wifi that picks up signal. I have used 100mW+ adapters before, but that is a bit much to be hauling around everywhere.

On the hauling... that is the key of these. The tiny power adapter fits in my coat and the computer itself barely weighs anything. Every other portable computer I have ever owned was weighed more and/or was bulkier. Unlike some other netbook PCs I tried, it doesn't feel like the case will dent in a backpack either. I don't know if you've ever seen a plastic laptop case with dents, but that tends to happen in backpacks. I actually take this computer out of the house too which is different. All of my heavy laptops that I've owned, I would very rarely take outside and that was only if I was going somewhere. This one is so light that it is like taking a book with me.

Some people have said these tip over, but I sit up straight, so I haven't noticed that.

The webcam needs some adjusting for video. It works on skype very well without any settings, but I've found it to be too much (1.3 MP) for other programs and have to adjust it. Most webcams are only 0.3MP, so chat programs don't know how to handle much more than that I guess. For quality, it isn't as good as a $100 webcam, but it is better than the average laptop webcam. I've had some glitches with audio on this computer, but that can be adjusted in settings as well.

One thing you can't do on mini 12 is install OSX. I have ubuntu but I have tried XP on it and it seems okay, but I deleted it with the restore disk as it was taking up too much space.

For your question about iChat, iChat is a mac version of AIM, so AIM clients can video chat with iChat.

I like the bluetooth feature, I have noticed that is lacking in some computers.

I think that most of the people on the internet who say these are crappy have read consumer reports or some early reviews and never actually used one of these. The screen itself sells for $239 (at least to replace it) which is most of the price of these, so it does very well for $160 worth of computer parts. You can find refurbished ones even less, I've seen as low as $250 with coupon.

Does any body have a co-pilot rifle that was shown on wild west Alaska?

Tate

I really want a 30/30 cal. If anybody has one or knows sombody who does, i would like to hear some reviews.. Also is a .457 too much for a 14 year old?

Answer
Tate:
Until I saw that one on Wild West Alaska, I had never heard of them, and I LIVE in Alaska not far from where those are supposedly made. Sounds to me like a .45-70 conversion they claim to be a bear gun. Up here in Alaska, big bore guns like that can come in handy. But if you live in the "lower 48" it is probably WAY over gunned for just about anything you would ever care to hunt for. The ONLY feature I see that would be appreciated down there "might" be the break-down feature for backpacking. But consider this important point. If you are hiking in bear country, the LAST place you want your gun to be is in your pack. Carry it and be ready. For that purpose, a LOT of great guns will serve you just as well as the Co-Pilot. Both Marlin and Winchester make some sweet offerings in .30-30 and Marlin will also sell you a .45-70 if you really think you need it. And in the long run, either one of those will cost you a WHOLE LOT LESS than something you saw on Wild West Alaska. Good luck.

Backpacking The World?

kids keen backpacks

Andrew H

I want to travel around the world by myself for about 6months and see everything that's out there. My major concern is that I will be going by myself. How am I supposed to meet people around where I stay, and what are some good types of places to stay? This is all going to be completely new to me, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I usually travel solo and let me tell you it's the best way to do serious travel - as opposed to relax or party travel.
My tips:

Stay in backpackers hostels with high atmosphere ratings, common rooms, kitchens and meet other solo travellers. Avoid Hostelling International hostels unless you want to make friends with local school kids and young families - the only exception to this being the Iceland HI hostels, which are surprisinglyfun to stay at (they're also the only hostels in Iceland which helps their atmosphere rating a lot). Hostels that have bars or restaurants are great too.

It can be boring. Especially at night. I try to find events that are open at night and I'm keen in night photography.

Get an iPod touch or iPhone or some sort of palm device, load up the Stanza application (iPods) or get your hands on mobireader (for all other devices) and fill it up with ebooks - all free - or solitaire games or audiobooks. If you can handle the extra weight and deal with the associated security issues, you can take your laptop (I never do, they're just too bloody heavy and there's always the risk of them being stolen when you stay at hostels). Modern electronics are the solo backpackers friend for getting over boredom. Particularly if you seek out a hostel with wifi - in fact I'm spending a lazy night in Venice planning a trip to Spain.

You can also carry a pack of cards - UNO, anyone? - to sucker other solo travellers out of the solo-induced haze.

I'm very independent - I prefer to spend my day sightseeing or walking around alone (I get really irritated when I sight see with other people, generally). But I usually spend breakfast time (its good to go with hostels that include breakfast as its the main place youll socialise) and nights with other travellers, usually making 'single serve friends' in different places. A lot of people you meet you're never going to see again and chances are you're not going to have much uncommon with the people you do meet besides a love if travel. But you're going to meet some amazing people too, who you'll keep in contact with through facebook and one or two you're also probably going to make theeffort to go visit or they visit you sometime in the future (i did a USA trip just to see a former travel buddy as well as Europe.)

A tip that will help with cost is to get in on couch surfing - google it. I prefer hostels to couch surfing but when I go to really out of the way cities it's really nice to 'know' someone there.

What are your dreams? :D?

Aurimas

I will read them all, my favourite will be the best answer :D

How to be popular in High School?

Joseph

I'm in eighth grade, nearing the end of my school year. I'm going to a high school where very few people from my middle school are going. Currently, in middle school, I am semi-popular. So next year I'll be a freshman. Only four people from my middle school are going to the high school I'm going to go to. So what are some tips to be popular as a high school freshman?

Answer
dress nice, and make sure you're always with style. you're a guy so nike socks, snapbacks, jordans, vans, converse. you can buy all those clothes from zumiez.com and tillys.com. you have to have confidence and act like you do. don't take any crap from anyone and be chill, smile a lot, and make sure your teeth are white, and stay in shape. buy a cool backpack like jansport, and make sure the clothes you buy are the ones you like and feel comfortable in, so you can add your own style to it, but also be popular. shop online or if you have a mall in your city/town go there and pick up a lot of cool stuff. wear necklaces, but not too many at once, only one, and no gold or fake looking ones that are glittery/sparkly. if you don't have the best smile, like you have a gap or your teeth are crooked you can still smile, it doesn't matter as long as your teeth are white. have good grades, and wash your face to get rid of acne. on ur first day of highschool try to spot out some of the popular kids and go up to one of them if you have a class with them. be friendly and loyal and don't talk about anyone behind their back on the first day. try to get people's phone numbers, add them on kik, instagram, whatever u have and always be social and ALWAYS be in style. also, find a sport that you're good at, like football or basketball or swimming or track, and join the school's team; be the best at it. make sure everyone's always saying hey to you when you walk past them. good luck! (or just be yourself)

Why do kids try to dress like rappers?

flonkas

You have seen it. Long tee shirts that go below your knees. jeans where you have to walk funny in order to keep them from falling. 200 dollar jordans that you have to keep wiping a little dirt spot from them every 2 seconds. a hat pointed a funny way. dora the exploer backpacks and power rangers. It all looks ridiculus. Rappers arent good people anyway with all the gang violence and putting down women.. Why do people act like that?

Answer
haha your question made me laugh! ive always wondered this. i graduated a few years ago and now my sister is getting ready to start high school! im worried, all these wannabe thugs walkin around. its ridiculous! rappers arent bad people, but these kids should really be making their own image. its a popularity thing. my ex i swear had a hundred pairs of jordan's and he didnt even play basketball! just wanted to look cool. its STUPID! and the parents, let them dress like that... come on now.

My friend and I made a bet that we could survive three days in the mountains?

Jay

My friends and I made a bet with some of my other friends that they could survive three days in the mountains with nothing.

We each get three people on are team and the only things we have are
-Jeans
-t-shirt
-jacket
-Socks
-shoes
-underwear

We will each have a whistle, a compass a small amount of thin rope and maybe a power bar of some sort

We will also have a first aid kit and a GPS but those are strictly for emergencies
We will also have are car filled with water food and other supplies for emergencies

For my team. I've decided to bring a small water filter
But my question is what are other must need things to bring, remember the bare minimum! No toilet paper, no tent, no even water bottles!

We need to find shelter
Find a water source (particularly moving water)
Start a fire
And find food

Enough to survive three days

We are all in pretty good shape. We are all men. We've been camping and backpacking a lot and we all have are Eagle Scout awards.

We will be in a deep forest of northern Utah, in the summer. There are no bears or wolfs or any other very dangerous wild animals.
There are only deer, rabbits, and other small animals
There are not many berry bushes or fruit/nut plants

what we have in mind to bring is:
Pocket knife
Lighter or flint/steel
Maybe a blanket

To summarize: we each get three things.
I have chosen a water filter. So we have the opinion of two other things.
What should they be?
If you have any tips or tricks we would love to hear them!

Help my team win!

Answer
I think that much is sufficient...
Enjoy your journey...
Have a happy and safe tour..... :)

What is the best tent and backpack for backpacking for someone who is new to the whole hiking/camping?

I have a north face back pack that is pretty large - but is not for backpacking/camping really. I also have a tent but it is pretty bulky. What would be something good for girl who is just now getting into the hiking thing? Any other tips on gear would be great!

Answer
Best is an opinion which reviews of products tell you. You pay for what you get is a starting point.

No, Not put it in my food but use it as a fuel for my "Open Jet Alcohol Stove". There are warnings all over the bottle saying that it is poison, I just want to know before I start cooking over this.

Answer
Alcohol Camping Stoves Are the Smallest, Lightest and Easiest Backpacking Stoves Around
if you use the correct fuel by the sounds of it you are useing the wrong fuel

Isopropyl - NOT Recommended. This can be purchased from any drug store, but it will always have too much water mixed with it. It's never just pure alcohol.
Denatured - This fuel comes mixed with other poisonous chemicals. Many times the label will say that it is suitable for marine stoves. I would go with that brand. Another way to tell if the denatured that you have will be any good, is to burn some of it in a metal dish and check for any residue left behind. Do not use it if there is any residue.
Grain - Alcohol works well, but can be expensive. Stay away from the colored grain alcohols and go for the clear such as the Everclear brand. Keep in mind that you brought it to use in the stove and not to keep your belly warm. P.S. This is the only fuel than can be consumed by humans. ALL the others are poisonous.
Methyl - Other names are methanol, wood alcohol, methyl hydrate, liquid fondue fuel, gasoline line antifreeze. This is a highly poisonous fuel. However, methanol evaporates faster than ethanol at all temperatures and you would have a better chance of starting your stove in cold weather. Store this fuel and the stove that uses it from your food and pots.
Gelled Alcohol - Such as Sterno, Canned Heat, Jelled Alcohol. This is good for keeping food warm, but not for cooking. Not enough heat output.
Diethylene Glycol - Extremely poisonous and is Not Recommended.

Simple - No Pumping, Pressurizing, Priming or Pre-lighting.
Fuel - Renewable, Evaporates quickly, Burns clean (no soot), Not oily or smelly.
Lightweight - Can weigh as little as a few ounces.
Reliable - They light first time every time, as long as you guard your match against the wind.
Safety - Fuel evaporates quickly and will not explode (non-inflammable).
Fuel Transport - Easy; can be carried in a plastic bottle. Do not use an untreated aluminum bottle. If you're not sure, don't use it. See the note at the bottom of the page.
Fuel Availability - Everywhere; can be found in drug stores to hardware stores.
Noise - Very quiet and generally cannot be heard. This can also be a con go to and read up on it first

Which item should I send first? (for a child in Peru)?

custom school backpacks girls
on School bags and shoes - Parenting Without Tears
custom school backpacks girls image

SerenitySm

Hi. I'm sponsoring a young girl in Peru, and I'm not sure what I should send first. It's winter there at the moment.

Toy,
dress,
pants/shirt,
school uniform,
jacket,
blanket,
towel,
school supplies,
school books,
hygiene,
chicken breeding,
corn seeds,
barley seeds,
beans,
shoes,
socks,
underwear,
undershirts,
sheets,
mattress,
school backpack,
laundry supplies,
guinea pigs for breeding,
wheat seeds.

I can currently send up to 3 items.

Answer
Are you personally sending the items or do you give money, pick the item and the agency sends the item? I'm going to assume that the agency sends the item because customs would tear you up for trying to send live animals over sea!

My suggestion would be:

Toy
School supplies
Guinea pigs

My reasoning is this: Poor children don't often gets toys. Peruvian women are often skilled at weaving and are usually capable of providing their children with blankets, rudimentary clothing, etc. A toy would be a great way to give the child something she couldn't acquire otherwise, and it's a nice way to initiate a relationship.

School supplies are hard to come by even in more affluent regions of Peru sometimes. Most travel sites list pens and pencils as good, cheap gifts for travelers wanting to thank locals for their hospitality. When I was in Peru, I saw lots of Peruvian kids walking to school with Korn notebooks and Hello Kitty backpacks, no kidding.

The guinea pigs will benefit the family unit as a whole. Guinea pigs are quick breeders and the family will quickly be able to breed them and produce meat for their families. They can also sell guinea pigs they don't need for extra income. Then they can buy some of the other things on the list on their own. Chickens would be a good choice for the same reason. And, of course, they can probably make good use of the eggs.

How much should a 14 year old boy lift?

kids backpacks under $20 image

Sponge

When beginning like never really have lifted before, how much should I start with? I never have before because no one shows me how and I never had access but now we have a bench and weights so what do up usughest I start with?

I am around 5'4", 148lbs so I do have a bit of a belly but the bmi calculator says healthy is like a 20-25 bmi and I'm like 25.7 or something so I'm not that overweight but I have no muscle really. My leg muscles actually are kinda big but my biceps aren't that much and I certainly have no abs or pecs. What should I start with?

I have until July 31st that's when school starts so should I do a schedule every other day I lift or something. I play baseball but not for the school and basketball, not for the school either. I used to be really really good at baseball, best on every team from age 6-10 and then I hit a batting slump and now I suck.

Thanks

Answer
Nothing. Growing kids shouldn't lift anything heavy unless it's their backpacks. You'll stunt your growth, and then in four years you're going to come here and ask us for methods to grow taller.

Better to do workout with no weight until you hit age eighteen or even twenty. There are other ways to develop muscle-mass, and I don't mean team sports, though those help, I mean real workouts by yourself. Besides, BMI usually doesn't work all that well with kids under sixteen-eighteen.

Why is this on preschooler, anyway?

What backpack should i take on Philmont?

Charles

Im going to philmont this summer and I need a new pack. I need one soon since we are going on prep hikes son. I have a very shallow wallet and need one for at least under $100. Thanks

Answer
I took an external frame Kelty backpack when I went. I think it was right at $100 (like $99.95) + tax, but it lasted me about 4 years before that and is still fine today, and I went in 2003. Make sure you get extra pins, as carrying food for multiple days can get pretty heavy and might break some. I'll say that some of the weaker kids that went on my trek weighed their packs in at 20 lbs; meanwhile, mine was in at 45 lbs (but I could carry it). Even with all that, my pack still held up. It's a worthy investment, even if you go a little over $100. You won't have to buy another one any time soon. The only exception? My dad's old Kelty pack that finally ripped apart in the 1990's, that he bought in the 1960's. Fabric and materials have become more advanced since then.

During my trip, I will be outside and very active most of the time, so I need a backpack that is comfortable (preferably lightweight), durable, and can carry what I need for the day.

I have never travelled internationally before and I am not sure what to expect or what type of backpack will be best. I have seen good reviews about The North Face backpacks as well as the Ogio Fugitive backpack. Which brand or specific backpack is the best for travel and being outdoors?

Answer
One that conforms to the airline size/weight limitations otherwise it will end up in the hold!

Does anybody have tips for backpacking through Europe?

Kate J

I think it would be so much fun to backpack through Europe? What are good places to go? How much does it cost? I'm not planning a trip yet, just getting ideas to know what I need to save and plan for.

Answer
Yes. It is. England, Germany, France, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, Croatia, Greece. Price varies, depending on seasonal airfares, sales, and advance purchase.

You'll do well to go to your library or bookstore and browse the travel section for Lonely Planet, Let's Go, Rick Steves, and Frommers travel guides.

Top Tips:
1. Don't overpack! The stuff you bring should serve your travel; you shouldn't be a slave to schlepping your heavy junk all over Europe. Plan to do laundry about 1 time per week.
2. Be flexible. Check trains, busses, flight hops 1 day before or after your desired dates; sometimes significant savings pop up this way. Know alternatives in case something comes up (train strike, lost plane ticket, etc.).
3. Slow down. People try to get 10 countries in 2 weeks or something ridiculous like that. Plan 3-4 days for major cities (London, Paris, Rome, Berlin), 2-3 days for medium cities (Munich, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Edinburgh), longer for regions (Interlaken, fjord Norway).
4. Research your lodging. There are some brilliant hostels in Europe; there are also some real stinkers. The guide books, and sources like Hostels.com and Eurotrip.com, will help you with real traveller reviews and tips.

Sorry if this may be kind of long but anyway. So I started high school at the local public high school. I got all As my freshman year, did varsity cross country, varsity track and varsity soccer. Sophomore year I got all As with two B's. One B in math and one B in Spanish. I did Varsity cross country, varsity track, varsity soccer and travel soccer outside of school. I was also inducted into the beat club. For my junior year my parents felt the public high school was too easy and wasn't challenging me enough. So for my junior year I'm attending the local private prep school. My parents had me tested half way through this year (my junior year) and found out I have dyslexia and dyscalculus (meaning my mind can't do math high then algebra 1). Which it wasn't a big shocker or anything, we kind of figured. My junior year has been kind of a struggle. With trying to do Allegra 2, chemistry with all the math in it, being the new kid again, and going to a very difficult prep school where most of the kids IQs are 150. The school year isn't over yet but so far i have one high A in photography, and all very low Bs in everything else. Meaning it's about an 80 or 79.7 in the rest of my classes. I'm currently doing online math so i can go at my own pace and i have a tutor for chemistry that I see at least three times a week. But it's still a struggle to understand things. I've only taken the SAT once and I didn't really study much and I got a 1310. I took the ACT recently but I haven't gotten my scores back yet. I did travel soccer outside of school this year, I'm on the school sailing team, I'm on the varsity soccer team and co-captain, and I plan to do cross country my senior year along with varsity soccer. This year has just been very difficult for me and my school obviously is a lot harder then most other schools. But I went to a private catholic school my whole life before i started high school. I also do a summer camp that's not like most camps. It's called adventure treks and it's a outdoor leadership camp for teens my age. Where we go backpacking, raft, rock climb, kayak, climb mountains while learning skills and leadership skills. I really want to go to App state. I visited and I feel like it'd fit me great. Do you think I have a chance of getting in?

Notes: I live out of state in Georgia
I'm currently a junior in high school
Female
White

Answer
Maybe, maybe not. My nephew was in kind of the same situation, he didn't get in at first and he went to community college and then got in for his junior year - he's there now. Transfer is more flexible on grades.

You should know that any change of school like that, right in the middle of your time in high school can be quite jarring, and it's usually not a wise idea to do that because grades suffer. It's hard on teens to make switches like that, and while your parents had your best interests at heart, getting good grades is a sign that things are good, not that they are too easy, so I don't agree with what they did People often don't realize that sometimes the best thing is to stay.

All I can say is that you might want to consider taking time to work on your academics this summer, and make a strong showing your senior year. Hopefully you'll have grades to show when you apply that can counteract your junior year. It's a shame because junior year tends to be the more important year, coming down to the finish line so to speak. App is one of the top Southern schools, and it's competitive - you may have a harder time getting in as a freshman but as my nephew has proven, it can be done later.

You should go to their site and review - here's part of it, this is what the last incoming class looked like grade-wise - and check the links below on freshmen students and transfer students criteria.
2012 Freshman Class Profile
Average weighted GPA of 3.99
Average SAT of 1153 (combination of math & verbal)
Average ACT of 26 composite
88% in state
12% out of state

DR.

My son is starting Kindergarten in a couple of weeks, and i am curious to know how i can make sure he developes good study habits..that will help him in the school years ahead.

Answer
I'm a teacher and I believe that kids should have a break right when they get home, just like adults need a break when they get home from work. Pick a time that is good, maybe right after dinner, and make it time for the two of you. Sit at the table with your child and do something that you need to get done...bills, reading, etc. Make sure your child checks hisher work and that you talk about it when it is completed. Then make sure they put it in the backpack right away..............so it doesn't get forgotten or the dog doesn't eat it!!!

How to act out a funny gym teacher character?

...

I'm going to nationals in speech and debate for humorous interp, which is where you basically act out an entire play yourself, including all the characters with no props. All you can use is body language and your voice, and actions of course. I have to use exactly whats in the script, no improv or extra words thrown in. My piece is about a little kid's first day of kindergarten and its super funny.. so basically my question is,

What are some things I can do to make my gym teacher character more distinct from other characters in my piece and at the same time make it funny?

Examples: One character (the nerd) is always holding the straps of an imaginary backpack
The "cool kid" is always slicking back his hair and adjusting an imaginary tie
The "crazy kid' speaks unevenly and twitches

I'm stuck on what to do with the gym teacher..

Answer
Easy.

Try a drill sargent.

A very bumbling, non-athletic type.

A very by-the-book with rules lawyer type, regulation and contract papers to fill out for insurance purposes and an accident prevention speech.

A germ-a-phobia type that really is afraid of kids and what they may carry.

An old timer, slow and even sleepy kind of over-the-hill and beyond retirement.

Or, the overbearing and self centered, 'Olympian'. Sports medicine graduate and career person.

Have at it.
