Camera Bags For Hiking/Camping?

WTF

I'm getting into hiking again and I'm soon going to do a 2-3 day camping trip. And I need to prepare, I was wondering if there is a camera day pack. I need room for my canon DSLR with a lens attached, my zoom lens, and my cleaning kit. I also need to have room for my cloths, food, water bladder, and other things that will last me 2-3 days. And have a lot of straps on the outside for my tripod, tent and sleeping bag. Overall, I need a big day pack that's comfortable, light, and room for camping materials. I don't need a lot of room for my camera just enough for what I listed.

Answer
The closest backpacks I know of to fit your needs are those made by Clik Elite. So perhaps one of those may work.

http://www.clikelite.com/products/

Otherwise, consider a do-it-yourself solution. Buy a backpack, such as a Maxpedition Vulture-II. Since it is a Molly PALs kind of bag, It has plenty of attachment points on the outside or a tripod and other items you may want to attach.

http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/Vulture-II-Backpack-12p114.htm

And you can then consider attaching your lenses and other items using one of the modular packing systems. These are individual pouches that are sized for individual lenses and other items. Think Tank, LowePro, Tamrac, and others make them. You can attach them to your backpack, or they also sell belts that you can attach the items to. If you have a large telephoto lens, this might be the solution.

http://products.lowepro.com/catalog/Lens-Cases,11.htm

Of the brands, I think LowePro has the skinniest attachment tabs, which would work best I think on the Vulture.

Then for your main camera bag, consider a Think Tank Change Up. I have one of these, and it is large enough to carry a DSLR with a moderate lens attached, a second moderate sized lens, and a flash unit. The advantage to this bag is one method of attachment is that it comes with two straps, and you can wear it on your front like a paratrooper's emergency chute.

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/change-up-belt-pack.aspx

If you don't like the Change Up idea, you can buy a holster for your DSLR, and along with the lens cases, pack those items individually within your main backpack. The following video shows this idea. However, keep in mind that you will be using a more suitable backpack for hiking, and you will not be taking quite as much photo gear. But it should give you an idea how you can pack modular components in your backpack.

back pain i keep having at age 15?

Dan

well i keep having this back pain all the time, im thinking the big contributor is my heavy backpack at school, i don't use my locker at all(never have time).

my mother has fibromyalgia, my doctor told me that fibromyalgia is very rare for children so they didn't want to test me(even though fibromyalgia is untestable, they eliminate all the possible diseases)

what do you think is going on?
doctor said i don't have scoliosis.

Answer
while fms is more common in adults--its not rare in children,my symptoms started when i was 5

but fms is WIDESPREAD pain--not just back pain and other symtpoms..

its most likely your backpack--many kids are having back trouble--not scoliosis..but muscle pain

can having something heavy draped over your shoulder (e.g. 10kg backpack) affect your growth? my bag is heavy

jackblack1

Answer
Not really growth issues but over all health concerns:

Children complain of severe back, neck and shoulder pain as a result of carrying a very heavy backpack. Posture problems can also arise form improper use of backpacks. This is why the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines on the proper use and selection of backpacks.

How much weight is too much? As a general rule, the backpack should never weigh more than 10-20% of the student's body weight. So, as an example, for a 70 lb child, anything over 14 lbs is too heavy.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following when choosing and using a backpack:

Choose backpacks with wide, padded shoulder straps. Narrow straps can dig into shoulders resulting in pain and restricted circulation.

The backpack should have a padded back, which protects against sharp edges on objects inside the pack and increases comfort.

Always use both shoulder straps. Carrying a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles and may increase curvature of the spine. Also backpacks with an extra strap that wrap around the waist offer better support.

Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back.

Use a rolling backpack(on wheels). This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must carry a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried upstairs. Also, they may be difficult to roll in snow.

Your Thoughts On These Name "Rules?"?

So, this is an article I found one rules that someone says will help you find the "perfect" baby name. I would like to hear your thoughts on it. And based one what it says what would be you perfect baby boy and girl name?

Rule #1. Uniqueness:
Having a unique name, may make your child stand out of the crowd. It is always good to feel "special"... Not being one of the several "Johns" or "Taylors" in the classroom. The downside is that "invented" or unusual names may be mispronounced or misspelled by others most of the time. And this could be frustrating for the child.

To resolve this dilemma, you can balance an unusual surname by a more popular first name. For example, a name like "Kyle Minkowsky" may be preferable to "Regenweald Minkowsky".

On the other hand, you could balance a common surname by a creative first name, say, "Eleonora Smith" rather than "Jessica Smith".

Rule #2. The Rhythm of a Name:
How your baby's name sounds is very important. Before you go any further, try to say it aloud with the middle name you are considering and your surname too. The full name should be sweet to the ears with no harshness. Please, don't get me wrong, what I am trying to say here, is that your baby's name should be fluent.
You can achieve that if you keep in mind the following tips:

* Balance a short surname with a longer firstname, and vice versa. There is no good if it takes your child five minutes to write out their full name!
e.g. "Jake Huntington" or "Elisabeth Wood" are fine examples.

* Avoid names that end with the same letter as your surname begins. I will try to illustrate this second rule here: The following names tend to merge together:
"Alexis Smith", "Erik Kramer" or "Jarod Deals"

Rule #3. Alliteration:
Alliteration brings a kind of fine "decoration" to the baby's name. If used properly, it is a combination of letters that make the name easier to say and to remember.
e.g. "Len Livingstone", "Opal Ohara" or "Jerry Johnson".

Rule #4. Meaning of the Name:
At this level of the search, you should find out the meaning of the name you are considering. It is always gratifying to know that your baby's name means: Love, hope, joy, life, tolerance, peace...

Rule #5. Check the Initials:
Once you have an idea for the baby's name, always check the initials! While the full name may sound pretty, the initials may bring some surprise!
Imagine the feeling of a child who grows up and realizes that their initials are: "N.I.L.", "Z.I.P." or "S.A.D."

In order to avoid such embarassment for the child, check the initials before you make your decision. You will be glad you did.

Rule #6. Nickname:
Make sure you like the pet forms of your baby's name. e.g. If you plan to name your baby boy: Richard, then expect him to be called also: Rick. So, if you don't like this shortened name, you may reconsider your decision.

What are your real perfect names(On you list)?
Do you agree/disagree with these "rules?"

Thanks for Answering.

Please star if you found interesting. :)
I give "кαÑιÑ⥠{âιâαн'Ñ Î±âмÏÑÑ Ð½ÑÑÑ}" credit for this question idea because of her question that said name regulations around the world. Though the questions are not extremely similar, she gave me the idea. Thanks.

Answer
Rule 1: Garbage. My name is the third most common name in the year I was born, so of course there are several others by my name I know of. It is slightly annoying to be confused for others, yes, but not the end of the world. Then again, there is a difference betwen choosing an uncommon name and something yewneekh. A lot of people, I've noticed, just don't understand the difference between something uncommon and unpronounceable. Uncommon is fine, as long as the name is still appealing. The rule didn't exactly clarify, and because of people I've seen (mostly on Y!A, honestly) wanting something "unique" and meaning Eleckzandyr, I've come to dislike the term unique. Uncommon is fine, though- it does imply a more traditional, albeit underused name.

2: This is one I absolutely agree with. I constantly reject names because of how badly they flow. It does need to sound nice; it's something the child will be hearing their whole life (Yes, full name first-middle-last isn't often used, but when it is, it shouldn't be something awkward to say and hear.)

3: I hate alliteration. It doesn't sound right to me- personally, I think it throws off the flow of the name, and therefore contradicts the second rule.

4: Not everybody cares about the meaning; I don't. Knowing that the name DOES mean something beautiful like love IS "gratifying," as the article states, but not something I look especially for. Meanings only make me like the name more; I don't dislike a name due to a bad meaning and I don't like a name specifically for a meaning. Nobody is going to hear your child's name, go "Hmm, I wonder what that means?" look it up, then berate you for naming your child "crooked nose" or something. Few people know the meanings offhand, and yes, meaning may be something personal to the parents, but I don't find it to be necessary.

5: How often will the child go by their initials? Even less than they will by their full name. My friends dad wanted her middle name to be Sally just so her initials would be A.S.S. Yeah, in that case, I can understand nixing the name. But just N.I.L. or S.A.D. wouldn't be that big of a deal to me. If I had those initials I would just make a joke out of it. It may mean less embroidered backpacks or blankets with the initials, but so what?

6. I don't really agree with it. If you just don't really like the nickname Rick, you don't have to call your child that. Ask your family and friends to call him Richard or something based off of the child himself. As he gets older he can choose his *own* nickname; the kid doesn't get to choose his name, at least give him a nickname he can choose from. If the nickname is just something you absolutely CANNOT STAND, then yeah, go ahead and reconsider. But if it's just a matter of you *preferring* the full to the shortened (not absolutely despising the shortened,) then why throw out a name you love?

What's in your purse/backpack/other(pockets, wallet...)?

Q. Just a random question...

--My Answer--
In my purse I have:
-Wallet
-Black pen
-Keys
-Chap stick
-Contact case
-Contact rewetting drops

Answer
I dont have a purse, but more than likely i walk around with my nintendo, camera, pills, eye-glass, phone, keys, money, multi-tool knife(medical purposes only), 2-3 wallets, pen, even a nail cutter sometimes, comb, tissues, even another game machine sometimes, and the 12 extra games for the nintendo, travel permit, cards for the bank, cards for taxicab, cards for the cinema, cards for John Lewis, cards for Evans, cards for Games Store, chewing gum, maybe the odd sweets, my glasses, ear phones for my phone or games machine. gloves, a photo of my wife, and a photo of myself when i was young in a childrens home with other kids. A nice reminder of whom you love and whom you have loved.
So when you ask what a women has in her handbag why not think what a fellow of 59 has in his pants. Ha Ha Ha Not meant rudely. But serious dont ask why i carry all that stuff around as i dont really know.

camping without using a camp ground OHIO?

Charles

Is it legal to hike out and camp in the wilderness without renting a camp ground?

Answer
Please be careful with your use of the term "wilderness," which has very specific political and regulatory implications. Ohio has only one "wilderness" classified area.
West Sister Island Wilderness is in Ohio.

Wayne National Forest offers dispersed camping that falls within your meaning of camping without a developed campground. Contact the Forest Service for specific information and regulations concerning dispersed camping in Wayne National Forest.

Wayne National Forest
13700 US Highway 33
Nelsonville, OH 45764
(740) 753-0101

Primitive Camping is allowed on National Forest land away from developed campgrounds and anywhere that your camping equipment and/or vehicle do not block developed trails or road right-of-ways.

Plan to bring enough drinking water for the duration of your stay. Leave a clean campsite by packing out all refuse. There is no charge for primitive camping, although a 14 day limitation is in effect. It is not normally necessary to check in with the Forest Service.

Where are some good backpacking destinations in the midwestern region of the United States?

My family of 5 would like to backpack and camp somewhere that is not that long of a hike but offers good views. A stream, lake, or river is preferred. The best places would be near southwestern Ohio or southeastern Wisconsin.

I use this link for info on local hikes, it's not all inclusive but the info is accurate and helpful in choosing destinations,

Song on the L.L. Bean backpack commercial?

Lucky Duck

Can someone tell me the song on the LL Bean Backpack commercial.

Answer
The song is titled "Big Rock Candy Mountain." It was written in the mid 1900's by a man named Harry McClintock. The lyrics are as follows:

One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fires were burning
Down the track came a hobo hikin'
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning.

"I'm headed for a land that's far away
Beside the crystal fountains.
So come with me and we'll go and see
The big rock candy mountains.

"In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
There's a land that's fair and bright.
The handouts grow on bushes and
You sleep out every night.
Where the boxcars are all empty,
And the sun shines everyday.
On the birds and the bees
And the cigarette trees,
The lemonade springs
Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

how does the jeep liberty sport do off road?

kestrelk8

i've heard its not a "real" off road suv but its not like i do any hardcore off roading anyway. the most i do are moderately tough dirt roads in the mountains to get to camping/backpacking places...

Answer
take your time just crawl the suspension is not designed for off roading no suv is they just have four wheel drive in case you need it but they are not intended for off road if you have to use your four wheel drive on the mountain you probably shouldnt be in a liberty or a trail blazer or a bronco II. the manufacturersd should be sued for some of their commercials

are there any places i can camp in the back-country with my jeep, in the Catskills or near there?

Mike

will be going to Long Island in November, and would like to go...car camping?..camping with my jeep in the back-country. not camping where there's RVs and toilets, and water, and stuff, but in the back-country isolated, with me, my jeep, and a tent.

catskills seem like an ideal place, but could be anywhere within 2 hours from NYC/LI.

Answer
AFAIK, there is no publicly-accessible land where you could legally drive off-road in back-country and camp. If you leave your vehicle behind, there are many options for hiking and backpacking. And there is plenty of private land and private hunting preserves where you could (and I have) gone camping and off-roading as part of a planned and landowner-authorized Jeep club outing. There are also at least two off-road parks within 3 or 4 hours of Long Island where you can camp (in a campsite, with RV's and trailers) and then wheel on established trails for a fee.

This is not to say that there aren't places you might find, but to just drive out onto someone's property or state land without permission is not only illegal but is exactly the type of ammunition used by neo-facist environmentalists in their battle to further restrict off-highway vehicle use on public land.

I've been to both of the off-road parks listed below, and while the camping isn't going to win any awards (or even honorable mentions), the off-roading ranges from fun to terrifying! In fact, I'm going to Rausch Creek this weekend with my club.

Cute Backpacks For Teenage Girls?

Maddie

I really want a cute backpack this year for school. I'm more of a classy, pretty type of style person and not like loud and proud. I don't want something super flashy, but something that's just pretty and can hold all my stuff. I need a bag about the size of a Jansport backpack. I liked this one, but I can't decide if I'm the only one who thinks it's cute and in reality it's super ugly. Thanks!

http://annettestouchofclass.com/item_2440/Gina-Boho-Patchwork-Backpack-R3103.htm
yeah okay that back is super freaking ugly. I don't know what I was thinking.

Answer
I think that bag is ugly it has way to much going on. It seems more childish then classy. I got mine from www.sidecca.com but www.aldoshoes.com has great one too.

1, just reading the measurements, it sounds like it definitely could.
2. on the reviews almost everyone gave it 5 stars. the first review said it lasted them 4 years of high school
3. nothing, they make us put out bookbag in our locker. but I carry around my big binder, a folder, purse with lots of stuff including my small, pretty pencil pouch for pencils and pens, my big, ugly pencil pouch for colored pencils and miscellaneous things, and a book.
4.13 inches.
5. looks like for feminine colors. well I'm a female so I'd guess the women's one.

Is it legal to carry a suppressed pistol in Arizona?

Jacob

I want to buy a FNH FNP-45 Tactical and put a silencerco Osprey on it. Would it be legal to carry this in my backpack or do I need a permit? I ask because if I needed to defend myself or others, I wouldn't want to destroy my ears. Thanks guys.

Answer
You will need a concealed carry permit to be able to have this gun in your backpack. This is a 4 step process.

1. Make sure you meet the qualifications for a concealed carry permit.

2. Review the provisions contained in Arizona Revised Statute Title 13, chapters 4 and 31 which are available on the Arizona State Legislature website utilizing the following link: http://www.azleg.gov/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp?Title=13

3. Contact the Concealed Weapons Permit Unit to request an application packet which contains an application, two fingerprint cards and a return envelope

4. Using the return envelope provided, send the completed application, adequate documentation which demonstrates firearms safety competence, two complete sets of fingerprints, the appropriate fee in the form of a money order, cashier's or certified check; payable to the AZ DPS to the CWPU. For a current list of fees click here. Fees are non-refundable.

You can get the fingerprinting done at a local police station for a small fee.

For the Suppressor:

Find an NFA dealer, pick out the silencer you want, fill out an ATF Form 4 in duplicate and send it in with 2 fingerprint cards (must use ATF's fingerprint card, the dealer should have it), a certificate of compliance, and a check or money order for $200 made out to BATFE and wait a couple of months. The approved form will be mailed to the dealer who will call you then you go in and pay for your silencer and take it and the approved form home with you. If you look at the form, most of the info required is the same as on the 4473 form you fill out to purchase a hangun or long gun. People that claim it is a lengthy and invasive form have never read it. It does have a space where you have to put a reason for having the item you are purchasing, I always state "For all lawful purposes" but I have seen other things. The best 2 I have on an approved form was one for a silencer that said " 'cuz chicks dig it" and one for an M2 .50 cal machine gun that said "personal protection". That last one was done as a joke and ATF occasionaly has a sense of humor.

The Form 4 does have to be signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) where you live. This is normally the Chief of Police or the County Sheriff but ATF accepts certain other officials (some higher court judges, State Attorny General) if the CLEO refuses to sign. In Maricopa County, Sheriff Arpio's office does sign the forms, but it can take several weeks. Also, having a concealed weapon permit makes no difference in the process.

what are some teenage girl must haves for back to school?

Alexis

ok so I already posted this question but I accidently did it under make up.... whoopsie. But anyways could you all give me some shopping ideas? thanks!

Answer
Ok so I'm making a list For the 2013 - 2014 year.
You'll need:
* High waisted jeans and shorts, you can buy them cheap at thrift stores and cut some into shorts
* I'm pretty sure leather jackets are still in style so get some at like forever 21 or urban planet or sirens if you live in Canada
* Jean vest
* Jean shirt
*. Skinny jeans
* A cute hobo bag or a cute backpack that you get at forever 21 or Claire's
* A muscle shirt
* A front tie shirt
* Uggs are always in style
* ROMPERS like jean rompersor cute lace ones just ones with a cute little pattern
* jumpsuits not granny like patterns but a cute chic pattern
* grey or black leggings. WEAR LACE UNDERWEAR OR A THONG WITH IT IF YOU CAN. If you can't try not to wear weird baggy granny underwear
* cute crop top from like forever 21. Those cute ones that show off your belly button a little and you can wear it with high waisted shorts or jeans
* pullover sweater
* pullover hoodie
* lifeguard sweaters are really in you can get them at a beach broad walk or something
* beanie
* a cute twist head wrap from like Claire's when you're lazy and wanna tie your hair up
* hair donut for perfect donut buns
* good quality yoga pants
* cute lace up boots but I'm not sure where to find it just look around
* cute riding/ cowboy boots
NOW FOR MAKEUP AND MORE ACCESSORIES
* for lazy days just light concealer, mascara, and something like eos lip balm ( you can get it at your local drugstore )
* for jazzy days when you're wearing a cute outfit a light layer of foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, eyeliner, light eyeshadow ( nothing too sparkly, like a light brown ), and baby lips moisturizing lip balm in like pink or cherry red ( foundation can be replaced by tinted moisturizer I'd you'd like )
* stud or pearl earrings and if you have your seconds and\or thirds pierced then studs on those and cute cross or infinity or hoop earrings
* those long necklaces with a bunch of charms from like Claire's is always cute
* cute scarf to wear with like a jean shirt
NOW FOR WARNINGS
DON'T and I mean DON'T wear SnapBack hats or baseball caps or whatever unless its like you're boyfriends. And even if it is DONT constantly wear it, take pictures of you with it, and go around posting pictures of you wearing a SnapBack on instagram or something saying stuff like #girlswhowearhats it's weird and guys find it really dumb
**btw some of these are just personality warnings**
* don't be THAT girl. You know, that girl who hangs out with guys and says cause there's " less drama " but actually does it cause she wants a boyfriend
* it's fine to hang out with guys but don't become one. When you hang out with guys still be cute and girly but just laugh with them or make them laugh. Guys love that
* don't change too drastically. It's weird
* don't wear a load of makeup to school that will make you look pasty
* don't ever ask a guy out.
* always smell good!
* carry around like tissues for runny noses or a spill
* make sure you know who you real friends are

Well that's about it. I really hope this helps!

I am going into 9 grade. What type of school suplies do you need. This includes clothes, agsseries, makeup, bages, and school suplies like basci stuff and the extra things you need. I am doing pre ap classes as well. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!

Pretty much everything you use in junior high, except most girls wear a tote or large purse instead of a backpack. You might as well just tattoo "FRESHMAN" on your forehead if you come to school with a huge backpack.

Boy scout Camping Trips...?

BroadStree

I need some cool, entertaining, adventurous, fun, and different ideas on some camping trips on the east coast. my troop will travel about 3-4 hours tops. we are based in Burlington county, in Southern New Jersey. hiking and canoeing are allowed. also it would be best if there was also something fun to do while we were there. we would want some free time, but still want something organized to keep us entertained. Thanks A lot!!!
im a scout

Answer
You could do a rafting/canoeing/kayaking trip on the upper Delaware River. There are several rental places such as Lander's and Kittatiny Canoes that will let you rent the boats overnight. You can camp on several places along the river including Ten Mile River Scout Reservation (Greater NYC Area Council.)

You could also do a rafting trip on the Lehigh River in PA. Whitewater Challengers has been running Scout Trips for decades. Camp Acahela (Northeast PA Council), Camp Trexler (Minsi Trails Council) and Hickory Run State Park are all close by if you want a place to camp.

Nearly every Appalachian Trail trailhead in PA and NJ is within a few hours drive from wher you live, as in the Horseshoe Trail in southern PA. Check the Keystone Trails Association webpage for more info. Try backpacking with your troop.

The Northeatern PA Council offers Project COPE at Goose Pond Scout Reservation near Hamlin, PA almost every weekend from April-November except during summer camp. http://www.nepabsa.org.

Finally, and it's a bit of a drive, but Green Mountain Council in Vermont offers scout ski weekends at Killington, Okemo, Mt. Snow, Bromley and other resorts all winter. I think most trips are $180 and that includes two days lift passes, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, and sleeping in the gym at the local high school. (I used to run these trips for several years.) http://www.scoutingvermont.org.

Finally,

Where can I go primitive camping in the New York area?

MZ

Looking for a place where I can go primitive camping (open camping/dispersion camping) within driving distance (less than 5 hours) in the New York City area. Anyone know of a National Forest or park that allows this that they would recommend? One with great hiking would be ideal. I'm looking to go in the fall when the leaves start the change. Many thanks.

Answer
you can get to many places within a 5 hour radius of nyc...
in new york state you can go to the adirondacks or catskills (the catskills are closer but the ADK's are way more magnificent)...

since you're willing to drive up to 5 hours you can also get to places within new england such as vermont and new hampshire..in NH the area around mt washington and the presidential range has the best mountain scenery in the east

...as far as specific camp istes you'll have to do your own research depending on if you want to car camp, backpack or canoe camp and depending on how difficult you want

What should I bring with me to go babysitting?

Megan

I want to keep the kids entertained. There are two boys. One is 3 and the other is 5 !

Answer
When I used to babysit, I'd bring things like coloring books and fun games for the kids to do with me. Bring a backpack filled with activities for them--that way they are entertained and not driving you insane. Picture card games are a good idea for little kids. Bring stuff that's semi-educational, but fun. The parents will love you for that!

Also, it's always good to structure your time with them. I would sort of "pretend" that I was actually a preschool teacher, and think of my activities with that in mind. You are babysitting from 5-9, for example. . . So have things planned for as much of the time as you can. Maybe wear them out with games, and then when it's closer to bedtime (like 7:30), pop in a video and let them chill in front of the TV. If you start a video right away, there is probably no way they are going to sit still for it.

Kids can sometimes get crazy for a babysitter--it's the whole "Mom's not here! We're free!" thing or something, I'm not really sure.

I made a "box" whereI put tons of games and craft activities for the kids. It really impressed/relieved the parents to see that I was so well prepared and excited to look after their children.

I've pasted some links with a few good ideas! The first one has activities that you can do with preschoolers. I'm sure you'll have a great time! Good luck!

At what age should you start preparing your child for school?

Q.

Answer
Thats a difficult question to answer without some more info - what grade or kind of school are you asking about - preschool - regular school??? Actually teaching and learning starts at a very young age with the parents and how we handle the transition from home to a more formal school can be easy for some children and hard for others and that will depend on age in some cases. Hopefully your school will have an open house ahead of time for you and your child to visit with the teacher. Does your child have a neighourhood playmate thats also going? - That can make it easier on them. Take your child out ahead of time and let them pick out a few special items for school cause they are a *big* boy/girl now - clothes, backpack, lunch kit (for lunch or snacks whatever they might need) - the big thing is let them be involved in the process. Also - after teaching preshool for many years I learned and parents learned - that it is not always easier on the child for the parent to stay in the classroom if the child is upset. The parents trusted me and learned to walk away - their child learned that mommy or daddy would be back and that they were safe at school with me. This was always harder on the parents than the child because the child calmed down much faster with the parent not there and after a couple of times it never happened again. Its a big step for these little ones and they need to know that you will be there to get them when its the right time - so just don't let them down. But again - preparing them is an ongoing thing.

How do women from other countries carry so much weight on their heads?

kids backpacks for school image

jzeb100

The schoo project im doing requires coming up with a solution to help people carry weight that they arent supposed to carry. Average man is supposed to carry 15% of their weight, but many people carry more and backpacks for school kids also cannot hold a lot. Im doing some research and found African woman can hold 70% of their weight on their heads, but how do they do it?

Answer
One reason for the African woman's ability to bear loads effortlessly seems to be her posture. As a girl, she learns to stand so straight that her pelvis and vertebrae line up like a well stacked pile of blocks.

Another reason may lie in her gait. At the beginning of most persons' strides the head bobs up and the body slows; then as the foot moves forward, the head dips and the body accelerates. This bobbing and dipping and accelerating and decelerating requires a lot of effort. But African women put all their energy into moving forward. The vertical motion is absorbed in the bones and soft tissue. Hips bob less than ankles; shoulders bob less than hips; and the head (with its burden) bobs not at all. Thus, while most people bounce along like wagons on egg- shaped wheels, African women move like wagons on round wheels.

I tried putting in some references for you of interesting articles but everytime I do I get ERROR 999!!
Try typing a sentence from above in google to find it. There was also another interesting paper in Nature magazine..

What does a kid need in his backpack for headstart?

singaloves

My son is 3 and wants to take a backpack to school this year when he starts headstart. What should I put in it, because it isn't actually required to bring one? Any ideas?

Answer
Put a Composition notebook and some crayons. Composition notebooks are pretty cheap and it could make him feel like a big kid going to school with a little notebook to write in. Also the crayons are always fun for kids, I still love them and I'm in high school :D ! Packing a toy would be nice too. Just not his #1 Favorite. If other kids take his favorite or it breaks it would be the end of his world.

I want to visit Yosemite National Park in late March/early April, what should I keep in mind?

Shiva

What is the weather like there at that time of year? I'd like to be in a green, lush area, I'd like to see rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. I'd also like to see the sequoia trees. Is this possible?
I will be there for two nights or so. Where can I stay? What are my possibilities and limitations? I'm a college student, so I don't have much money. I'd either have to camp or stay in a motel. In general, what all should I keep in mind for me and three or four friends?
Also...what time of year should I consider if I'd like,
- lush, green landscapes
- dry land (for being out and hiking)
- weather in the 70s, low 80s
Thanks everyone for your great answers. I've decided I'm going to hold off and go to Yosemite a little bit later in the year, when I also have more time.

Answer
Tumbleweed gave good info. To clarify one thing he said: Hwy 120 over Tioga Pass (over to Mono Lake) will be closed then. Bu tyou CAN take Hwy 120 into the Valley from Oakdale. But if a snow storm is going on, Hwy 140 is better as it is a lower route.

It won't be green or lush in late March/April. The leaves on deciduous trees won't have budded yet. But you would have good light (12 hours on March 21, more later) and have the place to yourself (skiiers gone home, families and hikers haven't arrived yet. Sequoia groves are very close to the Hwy 120 entrance or the Hwy 41 (up from Fresno) entrance. Ask as you pay your fees.

Cheap lodging in the Valley - Camp Curry has tent cabins and showers. Maybe $40/night. Camping ($20 or so) will be totally available but be ready for 20F at night (but 40F is a more likely low temp).

If you need really cheap camping, take the road towards Hetch Hetchy from Hwy 120 just before you enter Yosemite NP. 1-2 miles down the hill, there's a Forest Service Campsite on the river. Can't imagine they collect fees in March/April.

Figure that you'll be hiking in a sweater. And there will still be snow and ice on the trails up to Half Dome, Glacier Point and Yosemite Falls so those are really hard to get up until mid-/late-May.

If I was looking for a March/April trip with warm weather in CA, I'd look to Pinnacles Nat'l Mon (NOT lush, but hiking, rock climbing and a bit of caving). Death Valley is getting a little warm but has many attractions (not lush either!).

Nice timing for Big Sur area. Hiking, backpacking, and a few hot springs.

Oh, lush (in spots), good temps, close to the SF area: Point Reyes National Seashore. Backpacking, hiking, wildlife viewing, walk beaches. Elk near Pierce Point. Look for migrating whales from the lighthouse. Horseback rentals available.

How do you portage a kayak?

I'm going camping in Algonquin park, and I love kayaking, and i'm not a big fan of canoeing. I'm trying to find out how to portage a kayak, and I don't have $250 to spend on one of those portaging backpacks. An suggestions or websites will help. Thank you.

Answer
Paddle camping with portages when you're in a kayak can be a real pain in the butt. Think about the tiny dry bags stuffed into the bow and stern of the boat - every land crossing means pulling everything out and packing into a backpack so you can carry it. Getting to the next lake means unpacking the entire backpack and wedging all your stuff back into the hatches.

Depending on your portage trails (steps or steep hills) you may have a real struggle on your hands with a backpack and a boat. Portage wheels may or may not be able to accompany you. Carrying your pack to shore, then going back for your boat??

I dunno... I paddle both canoes and kayaks, I think in the Algonquin, do as the Algonquins do. Or did.

Or you can try the idea in the article below....

Need advice on where to go camping only 3 hours from modesto?

Amber

Hi I am trying to decide where i want to go camping. I want a more environmental or primitive spot not close to too many ppl. I am going in november so it cant be a place to cold. I have three places in mind but not sure which one to go to they also need to allow campfires.

So the places im thinking are Yosimete, big sur or Stanislaus National Forest or if there are other places you can think of.

thank you

Answer
Contact the Groveland Forest Service Office, 209-962-7825, ask about Spinning Wheel Campground. It's a primitive camp area along the Middle Fork of the Toulumne River off Highway 120 about 12 miles east of Groveland at 3,000 ft. elevation. It's uncommon to see anyone there during the off season, even on the week-ends. There aren't any places to camp in Yosemite away from people unless you backpack.

For information about backpacking destinations contact me at casey.cox53@gmail.com I live just outside of Yosemite and backpack extensively throughout the Hoover Wilderness, Emigrant Wilderness, and Yosemite Wilderness.

What is the average price of camping gear?

best weekend backpack reviews

best weekend backpack reviews image

slee_fairy

Answer
Free. Your first time should always be free, especially for kids. In other words, you should go with an experienced camper(s) or a camping organization who will let you borrow their gear, since almost all campers have extra gear, the very thing you're trying to avoid by first borrowing.

After a couple of "free" camping trips under your belt you'll start to get an idea of what kind of gear you might want to purchase, and start to research materials, quality, prices, and reviews to determine the right choice for you, your camping style, level of comfort, camping plans, and budget. Reading books about camping and backpacking at your local library is a good start along with popular camping websites.

A mistake some people make is to try to buy the biggest and most expensive gear, which is usually overkill. Similarly, don't expect Wal-Mart gear to get you through more than a weekend or two. Somewhere in the middle is where I aim, in size, quality, weight and price.

What type of kayak to get?

Marie

Looking for a suggestion on what type of kayak to get my husband. He does not yet have any experience on a kayak but wants one to take out from the shore. We are at the beach many weekends in the warm season in New Jersey and he wants to take the kayak out just a bit off shore and back. We have little room to store the kayak. Can I get an inflatable or is this not a good choice for shore line kayaking?

Answer
Inflatables or folding boats (with a collapsible metal frame like tent poles and a fabric skin) are a great option if you have limited storage space such as an apartment. But there is a huge range of price involved and many different models. Cheaper inflatables (like Sevylor and Coleman under $300) tend to be floppy and hard to paddle. I would hesitate to recommend one for ocean use, even near shore, because they will tend to be battered around by waves, just like a rubber raft would be, and will be tiring to paddle, even dangerous if he were to get swept off shore. Also, cheaper boats tend to lack a spraydeck cover to keep water from filling the boat. There are some mid-range boats with stiffer bodies and spraydecks I've seen -- I have not yet used one but the Advanced Elements boats I've checked out in shops seem pretty well constructed and defiinitely compact. They also have a built-in skeg along the keel which really helps keep a boat tracking in wind and waves. I believe most models are under $500. Maybe someone on Yahoo Answers owns or has used one of these and can report on it. There are reviews of most models of kayaks by owners of them at http://www.paddling.net.

It's a good idea to visit one or more outfitters that specialize in kayaks -- their salespeople can help direct you to appropriate models. Be sure to invest in a good quality paddle at least 8' long, preferably fiberglass shaft (not metal). A heavy, stiff and too-short paddle makes the paddling experience very uncomfortable.

If you've got a bigger budget, check out the folding boats made by Folbot, Feathercraft and Nautiraid. These cost thousands of dollars (I have two Feathercrafts) but are high performing craft you can use anywhere in the sea. Good boats like this do have high re-sale value so if you can aford one but he later decides he isn't into it, they are easy to sell. I've taken my Feathercrafts out into Long Island Sound on numerous occasions and had no trouble with surf, wind or currents. The kayaks pack down into a 35# backpack you can throw in a trunk or closet and take on an airplane. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to set one up and 10 to take it apart.

Some people even build their own folding and inflatable boats. Even if you aren't into that, it is fun to see what people have done at this website: http://www.yostwerks.com
It has several free designs for home-made kayaks and photos from around the world of boats people have built.

i live in southeast ohio, and im planning a camping trip, and was wanting some good input on campgrounds.

Answer
All the state parks are pretty nice but expensive. You don't say what style of camping you are doing. Tent, camper, backpacking? Hocking hills is very nice. Any of the reservoirs (Burr Oak, Seneca lake) have camping. Over in your part of the state you are not too far from Ohio Power rec area. Good fishing and cheap camping there, if you are into that sort of thing. You can get a free permit on line. These people may be a corp. but they have the cheapest camping in Ohio. Look around their pages. Here is a link to apply for a permit. http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx But West Virginia is very nice, if you want to go that far. Spruce Knob area.

Where are good places to camp within driving distance of Akron, Ohio?

I'm looking for some good campgrounds within 1 - 5 hours distance from Akron or Northeast, Ohio in general. I do not want to camp in the kinds of places where you are right next to other campers and hillbillies drinking beer or screaming kids, I'm looking for the kind of place that offers some isolation and privacy.

Thanks

Answer
What do you mean by "isolation and privacy?" Do you mean you don't want to see other tents or campers? Does it mean you don't want showers of bathrooms? Does it mean that you don't want electricity? If so, you'll probably have to do some hiking during the weekdays to find a walk-in, rustic site that isn't busy.

Mohican State Park and Memorial Forest near Mansfield may offer one of the easiest shots at what you're seeking.

http://backpackohio.com/mohican.html

Pennsylvania state parks in the Allegheny foothills are great for this purpose (see the "Pennsylvania Wilds" region at the link below), according to my backpacking friends.

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/camping.aspx#cam15

Allegheny National Forest is particularly popular with backpackers as some primitive campgrounds are so remote that reservations aren't even accepted. Much of the National Forest, with certain restrictions, is available for camping, and it's beautiful.

http://naturetourism.allegheny.edu/hiking.html

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/allegheny/recreation/camping/

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/allegheny/recreation/

Primitive camping also is available in much of Ohio's Wayne National Forest, including the northwest unit in Ohio's popular and beautiful Hocking Hills, southeast of Columbus.

http://www.athensohio.com/whattodo/index.php?page=81&item=489

If you're not into primitive camping and want the amenities, but just don't want to be crammed into a standard campground, consider Bissell's just north of Niagara Falls, Ontario. This place is a special hit with kids, plus you have the nearby attractions of Niagara Falls. I haven't been there in over a decade, and now I believe you'll need U.S. passports.... When we were there, we could see other campers, but we were scores of feet away from them, perhaps because they weren't busy and we asked for privacy. Their one acre pool is more akin to a pond and swimming safety must be emphasized, especially if you allow kids into anything besides the kiddie pool.

http://www.bissellshideaway.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=32

During weekdays, you might have lots of privacy in primitive campgrounds in some Ohio state parks. My hunch is that this may be the case at Malabar Farm State Park, near Mohican State Park, and not known for its small campground and overshadowed by neighboring Mohican. Call the park and ask!

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/malabar/tabid/762/Default.aspx

Consider getting a copy of the AAA Campground Guide.

Q. I've got 1 night booked at a drive-in tent site (everything else is booked) and we have 4 more nights to fill at Yosemite. I know there's endless places to see at this place. I don't really know how it works in this park (we're coming from BC, never been to Yosemite before) does anyone have any tips / pointers / certain places you think are great for interior camping? Thanks!

Answer
You need a backcountry permit.
-------------------------------------------

Backpacker Magazine covered a four-day North Rim backpacking trip.

--------------------------------------------

Try the Ten Lakes loop off Highway 120, Tioga Pass, start at the Ten Lakes Trailhead loop up and around Mt. Hoffman and come out at May Lake .

Do the Grand Canyon of the Toulumne, Toulumne Meadows down the canyon and climb out to White Wolf.

Start from Hetch Hetchy up to Lake Vernon and loop back through Tiltill Valley and past Rancheria Falls.

These are 3 good hikes that will make you feel like you did something and have a lot less traffic than trails originating in Yosemite Valley.

If you really want to be remote in Yosemite Park you can trailhead from the Shingle Springs Trailhead {also known as the Kibbie Lake Trailhead} on the east side of Cherry Lake in the very Northwest corner of the Park and go out Kibbie Ridge to Boundary Lake, or drop down into Cherry Creek Canyon at Lord Meadow and spend some time in the southern Emigrant Wilderness where there are even fewer people.

is it true that the bears are dangerous especially in this time of year?

Jason

Hi there me and my friends are planning to have a trip to BC.We'll be mostly camping in the woods.I've heard that there are heaps of black bears and grizzle bears in the area so I was told that we should be extremely cautious.anyways my question is aren't the bears supposed to be hibernating during the winter time?
what do you mean it's gonna be cold???? how cold would it be anyway? i heard that BC never gets cold as well as snow as the rest of the country, isn't it true?

Answer
Campgrounds arent open yet, sorry. In the interior its still sometimes about -2C at night, it was supposed to go down to that last night. We still have snow. We dont usually get a lot of snow but have this year and last year too. You wouldnt find dry wood for a campfire either, and there are restrictions on camping in areas outside designated campgrounds

Leave the bears alone and they will leave you alone, also a lot of bears dont fully hibernate.

Bears dont hunt humans and generally avoid them, UNLESS you have food in your campsite that they can smell and/or get access to. Store all food in your vehicle at night. If you are out hiking wear a bell on your backpack, talk loudly to each other. A bear will hear you coming and it will do the other way, they dont really want an encounter with you anymore than you do with them.

An exception is a very old or injured bears and the chances of running into one of them is very minimal.

I recently encountered a student on a school bus (I'm in 8th grade, he's in 7th grade) and found out that he also enjoyed anime. However finding the time to sit next to him on the bus, I noticed that he is an a extreme weeaboo (His clean/cut appearance made me denied the weeaboo phase at first) . Apparently the only anime is he willing to talk about is Naruto. Which he seems to talk about 24/7. He speaks butchered Japanese, the horror... He showed me many sites that I already knew about for watching anime especially for Naruto, crunchyroll being on that list. Once he opened his backpack and I happened to noticed many Naruto hentai doujinshi (Original content work) and many Naruto plushies. He bothers me 24/7 at school and on the internet. I sometimes find him stalking me while waiting for school to begin (School starts at 8:10, students wait in front of school gates). Can someone PLEASE tell me how to deal with a weeaboo? It's starting to creep me out.

Answer
Well, the poor kid probably has no friends because of his Naruto obsession (or has his Naruto obsession because he has no friends). Or some combo of both.
In you, he thinks he has finally met someone who at least is able to understand his fixation (if not share it). That's still more than he likely gets from any of the other kids. So, you represent someone he can actually talk to about his favorite subject.

Do you feel he is an actual physical threat to you? You use words like stalking and creep. They have the connotation of someone who gives off vibes of being dangerous. If you really believe that, talk to the counselor about him, immediately.

However, if you are merely annoyed by his clinginess and embarrassed by his hovering around you, especially in front of your friends, that's another story. In this case, I see 3 options.

You can be cruel to him. Tell him that he is annoying , and that you and he are not friends in no uncertain terms. But I'd reserve this option as a last resort, because no one appreciates having their feelings hurt (and certainly not by someone they are infatuated with for whatever reason; that's a double whammy to their self-esteem). Yeah, he'll back off. But now, he's gonna hate you.

You can talk to him like he's a person with feelings. Explain to him that it's not him, personally, that you object to, but certain things that he does that he ought to tone down a bit. If he is as keen on having you for an anime-buddy as you say, he'll probably be eager to do what you tell him, particularly if you do it kindly and gently. He may even appreciate the advice you give him. The only way this option wouldn't work is if it turns out that he's kinda thick-headed. A little more persistence might do the trick. If not, there is one more thing you can try...

Find someone else who is a Naruto fan. Introduce them. If they hit it off, he will be pestering someone else and lose interest in you. Mission accomplished! I realize that this is a diversionary tactic, and all you've done is make him someone else's problem, but, hey, if it works, it works, right?

Backpacking The World?

Andrew H

I want to travel around the world by myself for about 6months and see everything that's out there. My major concern is that I will be going by myself. How am I supposed to meet people around where I stay, and what are some good types of places to stay? This is all going to be completely new to me, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I usually travel solo and let me tell you it's the best way to do serious travel - as opposed to relax or party travel.
My tips:

Stay in backpackers hostels with high atmosphere ratings, common rooms, kitchens and meet other solo travellers. Avoid Hostelling International hostels unless you want to make friends with local school kids and young families - the only exception to this being the Iceland HI hostels, which are surprisinglyfun to stay at (they're also the only hostels in Iceland which helps their atmosphere rating a lot). Hostels that have bars or restaurants are great too.

It can be boring. Especially at night. I try to find events that are open at night and I'm keen in night photography.

Get an iPod touch or iPhone or some sort of palm device, load up the Stanza application (iPods) or get your hands on mobireader (for all other devices) and fill it up with ebooks - all free - or solitaire games or audiobooks. If you can handle the extra weight and deal with the associated security issues, you can take your laptop (I never do, they're just too bloody heavy and there's always the risk of them being stolen when you stay at hostels). Modern electronics are the solo backpackers friend for getting over boredom. Particularly if you seek out a hostel with wifi - in fact I'm spending a lazy night in Venice planning a trip to Spain.

You can also carry a pack of cards - UNO, anyone? - to sucker other solo travellers out of the solo-induced haze.

I'm very independent - I prefer to spend my day sightseeing or walking around alone (I get really irritated when I sight see with other people, generally). But I usually spend breakfast time (its good to go with hostels that include breakfast as its the main place youll socialise) and nights with other travellers, usually making 'single serve friends' in different places. A lot of people you meet you're never going to see again and chances are you're not going to have much uncommon with the people you do meet besides a love if travel. But you're going to meet some amazing people too, who you'll keep in contact with through facebook and one or two you're also probably going to make theeffort to go visit or they visit you sometime in the future (i did a USA trip just to see a former travel buddy as well as Europe.)

A tip that will help with cost is to get in on couch surfing - google it. I prefer hostels to couch surfing but when I go to really out of the way cities it's really nice to 'know' someone there.

I want to backpack from my home town in new mexico, to portland Oregon, and I want to do it all by my self. Ive been looking gor a cheap small one person tent but thats all I know I need. If im gonna make this trek, what do I need to carry in my back pack besides my hygiene? Or maybe you know of a good website for backpackers that would better help me? Also you can share your solo traveling stories, 10 pts for the best advice and or story, thanks

Answer
You cannot safely or intelligently proceed with your lack of experience. You must gain more experience, as indicated by the details that you provide. Furthermore, you must decide what trails you are going to follow and where you are going to legally disperse camp along the way. If you are going to backpack, then you probably need to follow the Continental Divide Trail or the Pacific Trail.

Backpacker Magazine provides a gear list. I provide a day pack list of essentials in my Mount Elbert article:

In my pockets, I always carry a pocket knife and fire starter, tissues or lint packets, along with several bandages in my wallet. Although reception does not exist in many gulches, I carry a cell phone that usually functions above tree-line.

In my daypack, I have compression sacks that hold my down jacket, heat packs, windbreaker, and down mittens or lighter gloves. I carry a second fire starter and two headlamps with extra batteries. I pack trail snacks, such as cheese, nuts, and rice chips. Attached by carabiner, I have at least two water bottles, sunglasses, reading glasses, and global positioning system. On most hikes, I also carry a water filter.

I want to go camping this summer, in style. Where can I find some camping equipment that doesn't reek of testosterone or remind of Grisly Adams?

Answer
R.E.I. has an extensive selection of fashionable outdoor clothing and accessories for women. Many outdoor gear companies today cater to women, with specifically designed women's backpacks and sleeping bags. You can even find a pink tent if you know where to look.

Which item should I send first? (for a child in Peru)?

SerenitySm

Hi. I'm sponsoring a young girl in Peru, and I'm not sure what I should send first. It's winter there at the moment.

Toy,
dress,
pants/shirt,
school uniform,
jacket,
blanket,
towel,
school supplies,
school books,
hygiene,
chicken breeding,
corn seeds,
barley seeds,
beans,
shoes,
socks,
underwear,
undershirts,
sheets,
mattress,
school backpack,
laundry supplies,
guinea pigs for breeding,
wheat seeds.

I can currently send up to 3 items.

Answer
Are you personally sending the items or do you give money, pick the item and the agency sends the item? I'm going to assume that the agency sends the item because customs would tear you up for trying to send live animals over sea!

My suggestion would be:

Toy
School supplies
Guinea pigs

My reasoning is this: Poor children don't often gets toys. Peruvian women are often skilled at weaving and are usually capable of providing their children with blankets, rudimentary clothing, etc. A toy would be a great way to give the child something she couldn't acquire otherwise, and it's a nice way to initiate a relationship.

School supplies are hard to come by even in more affluent regions of Peru sometimes. Most travel sites list pens and pencils as good, cheap gifts for travelers wanting to thank locals for their hospitality. When I was in Peru, I saw lots of Peruvian kids walking to school with Korn notebooks and Hello Kitty backpacks, no kidding.

The guinea pigs will benefit the family unit as a whole. Guinea pigs are quick breeders and the family will quickly be able to breed them and produce meat for their families. They can also sell guinea pigs they don't need for extra income. Then they can buy some of the other things on the list on their own. Chickens would be a good choice for the same reason. And, of course, they can probably make good use of the eggs.
