I'm worried an angry mod of Kindergarten kids next door are gone tackle me for it of their way to recess.

Answer
no, it's totally fine.

what should i be knowing before sending my 4 year old daughter to preschool?

mev

what should she be equipped with? i mean in terms of clothes, backpack, lunch pack.and what should she have learned by now in terms of lessons and milestones?what does potty training really mean.should she be able to go to the bathroom by herself? i mean she doesnt know how to clean up herself after peeing or doing potty.how much she should be knowing about using a school bathroom.

Answer
She will need clothes for all different weather, here are some examples:
- Raincoat
- Warm pants
- Warm shirt
- Shorts
- Tee shirt
- Tennis shoes
- Rain boots
Usually, they will require that she has at least one extra pair of clothes at school all the time but other than that you can just dress her for what the weather is that day, layers are always good too because she will not be under prepared but she can take clothes off if she gets too hot.

Some preschools provide lunch and others require you to bring your own so you will need to check with the school. She does not need a backpack but it will probably be handy to carry things back and forth such as clothes, lunch, and art projects.

Here are the basic academic things the other kids in her class will know but are probably not required by the school:
- Singing AND saying the ABC's
- Identifying some or all of the letters in the alphabet and knowing the sounds of some or all of them
- Counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's
- Adding and subtracting simple numbers such as 1+1 or 5-2
- All the colors, shapes, opposites
- Drawing simple figures like shapes, people, and houses
- Sharing, taking turns, and good manners
- Maybe starting to read simple words
- Putting on her own clothes. including tying shoes, buttons, zippers, etc.
- Using scissors
Again, these are the things she should know at her age but preschools don't usually require it.

She should be able to use the bathroom on her own, including wiping herself off, flushing, and washing her hands afterward. They will usually send someone to stand outside the door while she is going but she should be pretty independent and they will not help her wipe off. If you want to, you can teach her basic things about using school bathrooms such as covering the seat with toilet paper.

If you think she is not quite caught up I would suggest sending her to a family daycare, they are much happier and friendlier places for children to grow up but since she is going to kindergarten soon anyways I suppose it won't hurt for her to get used to it.

Good luck!

None of these links work... At least not for me. But if you're looking for a backpack, you should go to www.jatalo.com/shop

For every bag they sell, they donate a year's worth of textbooks to a child in need.

Many schools restrict students access to cell phones on school campus, thinking the device to be a problem in the classroom. However, having access to a personal phone during the school day can serve as a huge benefit to students. In addition to lowering the reports of cell phone theft, cellular devices can also serve as a means of emergency communication between a student and parents, as well as a locating device for the student if they go missing.
When a kids cell-phone is stolen it can cause stress for the individual and their parents. If a student leaves their phone in their backpack the chances of it being stolen are 4 times more likely, than if it was in their pockets. The most common thing for a kid to have stolen or lost is their phones, and the second most common place to be misplaced is at school. If the students were allowed to keep their phones with them at all times during school hours it would be harder for the thieves to steal them.
Parents should be able to reach their children at all times during the school day regardless of the schools message system; students do not get the proper messages on time. For instance when there is an emergency and the teacher does not relay the message to the student correctly; the student can take it over or under seriously and cause an even bigger problem. If the parent contacts them personally they can understand whatâs going on, and approach the problem appropriately.
Each year more than 58,000 children in the United States go missing more than 25% are during school hours, but only about 10% have cell-phones. If a student goes missing during school hours this can bring trouble to the school and the family, but with the technology police and higher authorities have it is now easier to find children when they have phones. If a child goes missing it would be less likely to find them without this technology.
In conclusion, access to a phone during school hours is very important to students, by offering students the opportunity to carry their cell phones in their pocket, schools can also offer assurance during emergencies, safety in times of risk, and the peace of mind from not having to worry about theft.
Please help me its due by Friday and I cant make it longer no matter how hard I try
OR JUST HELP MAKE MY CONCLUSION BETTER!?? "In conclusion, access to a phone during school hours is very important to students, by offering students the opportunity to carry their cell phones in their pocket, schools can also offer assurance during emergencies, safety in times of risk, and the peace of mind from not having to worry about theft."

Answer
Another thing you can do is list some reasons why people think cellphones should be banned. And then attempt to refute them.
For instance "Teachers believe cellphones in the class are a problem because they distract the student from paying attention to what the Teacher is saying and therefore inhibiting their learning. While this may be true in certain cases, that problem is easily remedied by confiscating the cellphone of the offender. In a democracy like ours, punishing everyone for the actions of one, or a few, violates what it is our society stands for." You can easily keep on just this line of thinking for quite a bit longer.

The point, is that when writing an essay you should also try to list counterpoints to your argument and refute them. This creates a stronger argument in favour of the case you're trying to make, and has the further benefit of making your essay longer, and more interesting.

You could also do some more research and include that in your essay. For instace I found this article in the Globe and Mail(a reputable Canadian Newspaper): http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/ontario/schools-should-be-open-to-cellphones-in-class-mcguinty/article1708313/

Now reading through that lets say we find something we like such as: "The Toronto District School Board â one of the largest in Canada â is considering a rethink of its cellphone ban. Students are still required to shut off their phones in school, but the board said it's exploring ways to incorporate them in the classroom."

Of course when we use sources we also need to cite them so that article in the globe and mail we'd cite like this(go here to learn more on how to cite sources properly http://www.schulich.yorku.ca/SSB-Extra/Ahonesty.nsf/docs/Academic%20Honesty%20-%20Citation%20Guide?OpenDocument:

How to pack for camping and have everything organized?

camping backpack packing tips
on How to Start Your Backpacking Trip | Leon's Backpack
camping backpack packing tips image

rocio

we enjoy the outdoors and camping, we have bought many items during the years and now we have many things, and they get everywhere in the car during the trip. How do you pack kitchen items: paper plates, utensils, paper towel? bed items (they are bulky)? mosquito repellent bottles ( they love me )I usually put kitchen stuff in a plastic container, but to reach the bottom I have to take everything on top. Any creative ideas? tips? I may buy a space saver bag for the bedding, has anybody tried that.

Answer
For car-camping I use a medium-size Rubbermaid Action Packer bin with sheets of plastic (lexan? stuff from Home Depot) cut into 11" tall dividers and duct-taped into place for my kitchen box. There's room in the box for my pots and pans, three propane canisters, plastic plates and bowels, napkins, trash bags and space for most of my dry foods. On the very top I lay my large griddle, cutting board, campfire grate, collapsible sink, axe, folding saw and 1/2 rolls of paper towels. I have a mesh organizer I made myself and screwed to the inside of the bin's lid to hold my cooking and eating utensils.

I can then strap my Coleman stove and el-cheapo propane grill on top of this. When I get to camp, all the stuff on the top of the bin comes out and generally stays out until it's time to pack-up and go, and the stuff underneath is stored vertically instead of flat, so there's no digging for buried items. The lid, with the utensils attached, also comes out and stays on the mesh shelf under my camp kitchen unit (small folding table with grill shelf).

Generally speaking, each person -- child or adult -- is responsible for carrying their own clothing and sleeping kit. All our sleeping bags compress well into their stuff sacks, and we use self-inflating mattresses that also roll-up tight. The sleeping bags go inside each person's duffel bag or backpack on top of their clothing and personal items, and the mattress gets strapped outside to the top or side. Clothing is organized into dry bags to protect from any weather or mishaps, and for organization. We also use one of the drybags full of clothes with a pillow case instead of a pillow. Each person is also responsible for their own toiletries, which go in a small nylon bag stored the outside pocket of the duffel bag or backpack, along with sun block, insect repellent, flashlight or headlight with extra batteries.

If you are using regular bedding you'll find that sleeping bags will take a lot less space and weight, particularly if you use a compression bag (just remember to loosen the compression bag during storage at home so the insulation doesn't go flat). Our bags compress down to about 9x12". As mentioned above, we put a pillow case over our clothing's dry bags to use as a pillow, or you can get inflatable pillows. Also, camp towels or large "Sham Wow" type towels take up much less room than regular household towels but work just as well, and dry more quickly.

The tent, 2 LED lanterns, 2 bag chairs, roll-up table, dining tarp with poles go into one large duffel. This sometimes leaves one or two loose chairs to sling over your shoulder.

If necessary, I can stack the two coolers, Rubbermaid bin, stove and grill onto a folding luggage cart and drag it to the campsite on one trip, then return and strap the water container, large duffel, and camp kitchen to the cart for my second trip.

Any tips for packing healthy meals camping?

SBB

I'm going camping this weekend and I am looking for a few suggestions regarding food to pack. I've recently lost 30 lbs and this is my first weekend in a bathing suit. So, naturally, I want to stay lookin good and not chow down on some fatty, salty, bloating foods. I've already got fruits and veggies down on my list (frozen because I read somewhere that it will double as ice, which is an amazing space saver idea!)

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Answer
I'm a seasoned camper and have favorites for the type of camping I'll be doing. Sounds like you are either RV or car camping since you will have a cooler. In this instance, just remember the less pots and pans, the better.
- First rule: Prepare anything at home that you possibly can. Feels like a pain but you will love yourself for doing it before hand.
- Lunch: Sandwiches, fruit, cheese, nuts, chips/salsa, hot dogs/veggie dogs
- Dinner is easiest if you take stuff that can cook over/in the fire (hot dogs - on sticks, steaks & chicken on a grill rack, garlic bread-in foil, corn still in the husk-right in the fire, baked potatoes-in foil)
- Any pastas as this is easy and filling
- When cooking on the fire consider making 'aluminum foil' pockets (make a sealed pocket out of heavy duty foil filled with meat and veggies, like a nice fish with lemon/herbs, carrots, potatoes -- and throw in the fire). It's like a crock pot!
- Pre-made sauces (marinara, pesto)
- Breakfast: Before departing on your trip dice up your favorite omelet fillings like green peppers, smoked salmon, tomatoes, cheese, onion and throw these in a zip lock with uncooked scrambled eggs. Keep it on ice then when ready to eat, warm up the pan and dump the prepared and pre-measured contents in a pan.
- If backpacking and you need to take non perishables, my FAVORITE is pasta, pesto, and smoked salmon. All these don't need to refrigerated and are like a gourmet meal in the middle of no where, and it is a very easy meal: just boil the pasta and eat out of the pot!
Good luck and have fun!

I need some help! How do can you make a gently used backpack look new?

kid ink backpack

Answer
MENDING
Backpacks tend to break in two places. The breaks either happen in the straps or there's a huge tear in the corner of the bag caused by the pressure of the books. These can both be repaired at an alterations shop.
Professional alteration shops have the commercial equipment needed to stitch through nylon webbing and canvas. In our community, these repairs can be made between $3 to $7 which is far less expensive than buying a new backpack.
If your child's backpack is torn, it's always best to have it mended first before tossing it in the washing machine.

PRE-WASH/WASH
Unless your child's backpack is made of leather, it can be washed in a regular washing machine on the cold water, gentle cycle. Before tossing it in the machine, stains should be pretreated first.
To remove the greasy and grimy dirt stains on my children's backpacks, I mix up a solution of Dawn dishwashing detergent and apply it to the stain with a scrub brush. Scrubbing the stain in a circular motion will eventually lift the dirt. For ink stains, we use a bit of hairspray and apply it with an old toothbrush.
Once the backpack has been pretreated for stains, it can be washed in the machine. After laundering, allow the backpack to drip dry overnight. Do NOT place in the clothes dryer.

SHAPING
Some backpacks have a bit of a shape to them. To preserve the shape, these steps will help:
1. Blot up excess water with a towel.
2. Roll up two or three beach towels and pack inside the backpack. Adjust the towels so they are tucked into the corners and "fill out" the backpack into the proper shape.
3. Let dry overnight.
4. The following day, remove the towels and check the backpack for dampness. If the backpack is still wet, it can be set on a dry surface to finish drying.

ADD ZIP
Like most kids, my daughter wants a new backpack every school year. How we solved this problem was to buy two backpacks and rotate them from year to year. On odd years, she brings her orange pack and on even years, she uses the green one.
To add something a little extra to the backpacks to make them "fun" again, the following embellishments can be added:
*** Key chains and lanyards can be attached to the zippers
*** Colorful character buttons can be pinned to the fabric
*** Draw mod daisies, geometric patterns, or other fun patterns using fabric paint pens.
*** Glue sequins, buttons, press on earrings, or other embellishments to the fabric surface.
With a decent backpack running anywhere from $25 to $40, it makes sense to use those packs as long as possible. By mending the breaks, giving them a good wash, and adding some fun embellishments, your child won't minding reusing her old backpack over and over again.

What school supplies should I get?

Q. Hi I'm going in to the 8th grade and I'm really trying to stay organized this year so it would help if u could give me some tips and if u could make a list of what to have

Here are my classes

Math
Lang. Arts
Sicnece
History
Band
Health
Jazz band
Athletics (gym for kids that play sports)

At my school we do blocks and we have to go to math everyday
And I know it's a little early but thanks

Answer
BASICS
- No. 2 pencils
- Mechanical pencils
- Colored pencils
- Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)
- A large pink eraser
- Ballpoint pens (Get a few red ink ones too, because some teachers have students do peer editing.)
- Highlighters
- Spiral-bound or composition notebooks
- Loose-leaf notebook paper (Teachers can be picky about paper. Some middle schools ask that students use the college-ruled variety.)
- A ruler with English and metric measurements

ORGANIZATIONAL HELPERS
- Several three-ring binders (Some teachers require that a binder be used exclusively for their class.)
- A three-hole punch (a regular one or one that fits in a three-ring binder)
- A pencil case that fits in a binder
- Binder dividers (The kinds with pockets are good for loose papers.)
- Pocket folders
- Folders that fit in binders
- A small notebook to record assignments
- A calendar for scheduling assignments
- A sturdy, supportive backpack (Some schools do not permit rolling backpacks because of space considerations, so check with your school before considering this option.)
- Two combination locks (If the school lockers do not have built-in locks, your child might need one for the hallway and one for the gym.)

STUDY AIDS
- Index cards, ruled and unruled (These are great for making flash cards.)
- Highlighters
- A calculator (Check with the math teacher first before investing in an expensive one. Graphing calculators, for example, are required in many high school math classes. Teachers advise parents not to buy a calculator with more functions than students will use.)
- A protractor

Would you buy your kindergartner a phone?

Kristin

My husband just told me he wants our daughter to have a cell phone with GPS tracking in her backpack when she goes to kindergarten in the fall. He thinks it would be good for her safety to be able to know where she is, as well as in case of emergency be able to contact us. I think it's absurd that a 5 year old kid would have a phone, first because she'll be in the care of teachers from when he drops her off until when I pick her up, but mostly because I don't want her using it all the time like a teenager.

Has anyone bought their kindergartner a phone? Would you or wouldn't you and why?

Answer
No. You can't make a small child safe by giving her a phone - if there is _any possibility at all_ that she would ever be put in the position of being the one needing to contact you in an emergency, or that the answer to "where is she?" isn't "at school", find a better kindergarten!

how to contact people if no cell phone towers are available?

as you may know (lol jk)....i'm embarking on a camping trip to a remote, obscure destination which does not have any cell phone towers or power transmission lines anywhere near the vicinity making it difficult for me to contact other people via phone, etc. Is there a solution for this?

Answer
Yes,

On a backpacking trip you'll often lose cell signal.
If you are a climber/mountaineer, however, you can climb to the peak and cell towers as far as 10 miles can be reached.

However, more practically I recommend for backpacking.

1 - SPOT, a GPS/satellite transceiver. I have one. Its small and light. People can track you on google map. You can push a bottom to send for rescue.
2 - Ham radio. Good for 5 to 40 miles depending on the geography. Works great, but requires a license, which is extremely easy to obtain. I got it in one morning.
3 - Satellite phone - too expensive for most people.

I prefer the SPOT if I am backpacking/climbing alone.
I prefer the SPOT and ham radio if I am going in a group.

I never used the sat phone. The cost is prohibitive.

If you are taking kids, unexperienced backpackers deep into the mountains, I highly recommend at least one person take a SPOT.

oh ya and is it easier to carry your laptop with you to your classes?

Answer
Yes because whereelse are you gonna put it? It's not high school, so there's no lockers. Everyone just puts their backpack on the floor leaned up against the side of their chair or under the desk. A lot of girls just carry a big purse or tote bag instead of a backpack. Personally, I carry both a backpack and a small purse. It's all personal preference and since it's college, no one is gonna judge you like in high school since everyone has matured. Some people even use a roller backpack.

Pictures of raw totes and/or backpacks for freshmen year?

Hey, I'm a girl and im going to start highschool next year so I'm really excited but at the same time a bit nervous. I know its a pretty long time from now, but time goes by fast. My questions are: what would you use, a tote bag or a backpack? And why?
Also, leaving pictures would be awesome, thank you!

Answer
DON'T GET A ROLLER-BACKPACK!!!
It will be a big mistake! You're in high school at that point, not in primary!

It depends on if you have lockers (to understand the amount of stuff you will be carrying). You will also have to consider if you have to bring any books to school for your classes.

I'm working at a summer camp and a friend of mine is in charge of the "wilderness exploration" area. W.E. (wilderness exploration), traditionally involves teaching kids about things and concepts associated with camping outside, and usually there are several camping trips organized for outside of the camp, We have been brainstorming some ideas to teach, like leather work, camping and cooking, orientation, and other general stuff. I was just wondering if you could give us some good ideas to teach the kids and get them involved. Some fun activities, concepts, exercises, arts and crafts, etc. Everything from camping to nature or whatever! Thanks guys!

Answer
Teaching ideas:

1] Plant and animal communities and zones: montaine, alpine, tundra form areas for distinctive species.

2] Energy production in various communities: wetlands produce more plant and animal densities than dry forests or deserts.

3] Firestarting without matches. [Look at my favorite: StrikeForce spark generator with lint dipped in petroleum jelly or high-potency alcohol.]

4] Explore campfire cooking recipes and techniques.

5] Evaluate gear checklists for various wilderness trips.

6] Compare types of gear and their qualities for wilderness backpacking.

What should I bring when travelling with my baby?

Gal in red

My baby will be five months old when I travel and I will be out of the conuntry for a month. What should I bring with me?

Answer
Hopefully you are nursing. Then you don't have to deal with worrying about water quality or hauling formula.

If you us formula- use POWDER...and only bottled water....and insist the bottles be brought to you UNOPENED so you can see the seal....then you know they weren't refilled.

Bring orajel and baby tylenol...and any over the counter medication you use for baby. You don't want to need to rely on meds in another language.

Carry diapers for a week and wipes. Don't drag a months worth. Every country has diapers. Lay in your stock as soon as you get there. Put the wipes in a ziploc bag- less space.

Disposable bibs.

Only 2-3 SIMPLE toys.

Car seat. This can double as a "highchair." I've even hauled car seats into movie theaters. The weight holds the seat down, and my kids were always happy to sit in their carseat if they were watching a movie.

Umbrella stroller and a baby backpack. Backpacks are easier than slings when they are that age- and when you have luggage.

Baby will be on cereal by then....depending on where you are going, you should be able to get dry cereals. Again....watch the water!

A blanket or toy baby associates with their bed. this will make the sleeping arrangements seem more homey.

If you will be travelling across more than 1 time zone...start adjusting baby to the new schedule 2 days for every time zone you are crossing (30 minutes a day)...so your travel day is the second to last day of adjustment......don't forget to reverse it on your way back.....it's good for you, too----you won't lose time to jet lag.

Keep with you on travel days.....a bag with EVERYTHING baby would need for 3 days...and then a few more diapers. When our 3rd was a month old, my husband and I tok her across the country with us on a business trip....and rest trip for me. She nursed, so no problem there....but the airline LOST the bag with her "gear." I was so glad I had 3 days supplies for her....it took that long to get her bag back!

Mostly what kind are the backpacks do girls use. Also if I packed a lunch for High School should I put in a bag or a lunch box? Will be in HS this end of August!
yeah I should get a Thomas the Tank Lunch box.. JK!

Answer
*laughs* I went through this when I went to college. I decided that backpacks weren't the thing for a university girl and ditched the back pack and went for a book bag.

Just one thing and I am not sure how your new school will be but make sure you get a locker or have a locker that you're sharing with otherwise those books can be a pain to carry and tote around. My old high school was so picky about giving out lockers it wasn't even funny. I couldn't even get a locker. So I ended up with one of those backpacks with wheels so I ended up wheeling my books around, much easier than wearing those books on your back and those books are heavy.

How do women from other countries carry so much weight on their heads?

jzeb100

The schoo project im doing requires coming up with a solution to help people carry weight that they arent supposed to carry. Average man is supposed to carry 15% of their weight, but many people carry more and backpacks for school kids also cannot hold a lot. Im doing some research and found African woman can hold 70% of their weight on their heads, but how do they do it?

Answer
One reason for the African woman's ability to bear loads effortlessly seems to be her posture. As a girl, she learns to stand so straight that her pelvis and vertebrae line up like a well stacked pile of blocks.

Another reason may lie in her gait. At the beginning of most persons' strides the head bobs up and the body slows; then as the foot moves forward, the head dips and the body accelerates. This bobbing and dipping and accelerating and decelerating requires a lot of effort. But African women put all their energy into moving forward. The vertical motion is absorbed in the bones and soft tissue. Hips bob less than ankles; shoulders bob less than hips; and the head (with its burden) bobs not at all. Thus, while most people bounce along like wagons on egg- shaped wheels, African women move like wagons on round wheels.

I tried putting in some references for you of interesting articles but everytime I do I get ERROR 999!!
Try typing a sentence from above in google to find it. There was also another interesting paper in Nature magazine..

I live in southwest PA and have winter camped in a number of areas not that far from you. Shenandoah national Park in Virginia is one but my preference is for the many trails in the mountains of the Monongahela National Forest in east central West Virginia. The area called The Roaring Plains has some wonderful trails, also the Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods, Cranberry Backcountry and Seneca Creek backpacking trails. You do need to check snow levels -- for some trails you might need to rent or bring snowhshoes if the pack is deep enough later in the season.

As you can see in the photos in this link to trail information there, it really is a beautiful place in the winter:

http://www.pocahontascountywv.com/skiing_winter_recreation.aspx

And here is the Wikipedia entry about the Roaring Plains. Most people don't realize it is the largest and highest wild plateau in the Eastern US. Really a little known gem for wilderness hiking and backpacking:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaring_Plains

You can see how wonderful the views are from the ridges, yet there are sheltered areas great for campsites.

This book, the hiking guide to the area, is excellent and will give you maps and campsite recommendations as well as the names of outfitters in the area who can give you good information.

http://www.amazon.com/Monongahela-National-Forest-Hiking-Guide/dp/0961655313

I have winter camped in the Rockies out west, from New Mexico to British Columbia, as well as the Adirondacks in NY and White Mountains in New Hamphire, but I get just as great a wilderness experience in the highlands of West Virginia and it is much easier to get there. The WV highways are very good and they keep them clear in the winter. I know that you and your boys will love it there.

Does anyone know where I can find a free sewing/quilting pattern for a backpack for teenagers?

I want to quilt/sew a full size backpack for our kids school--not the little kiddie size ones that are for younger children.

Answer
Wild Ginger has a software program that is free called "Wild Things" - you tell it how big you want and it prints pattern pieces on your printer - you just tape them together. There is a backpack with a flap, as well as a zippered messenger bag, called a shoulder bag on their descriptions. I've used this program to make matchy halloween bags. I'm just a satisfied dedicated customer - no affiliation...

I did a search for "backpack" on craftster.org, and got like 20 pages of homemade backpacks that people have made there. I think what might be most helpful for you might be the messenger bag tutorials below, with double straps instead of one - the straps would attach at the top and bottom. It is not that hard to do and doesn't require a pattern.

Parents with children in ALL DAY preschool or daycare that require a pillow or blanket?

What type of blanket and pillow do you take for your child? We were using the travel pillow and a small blanket from home but because it has to be washed every weekend the zipper on the pillow gave out. I was looking into purchasing a nap mat and wanted to know if anyone had purchased one and what your opinion was. They are terribly expensive and I would like have some input before investing in one.
Okay maybe I need to clarify- he already attends a preschool and takes naps daily. They take naps on cots that are washed down every weekend with a bleach solution. As a parent, we are required to bring a blanket and pillow from home and take these items home every weekend and wash them. The zipper on the pillow he had broke becasue the pillow is washed every weekend and instead of buying another small pillow (or in this case several since it seems like they are going to keep breaking) I thought about buying a nap mat or a bed roll that has a pillow attached to a blanket. I wanted to know if anyone had purchased one and what they thought. It has to be durable and able to be washed at least once a week.

Yes Jho-that is what I am talking about. I do not know anyone that can sew though!

Answer
i had to look up what you meant by "nap mat" i pictured one of those tumbling mats in a gym type things, lol (that's what i had growing up)

i don't have kids in a daycare, but my MIL quilted a "nap mat" for each of my girls. it doesn't have a zipper, but folds in on itself to make a pillow. i've seen similar products that fold into itself to make a backpack.

if you know anyone that quilts/sews they could make you one.

but target and toys r us both have some for $20

What's with huge logos all over clothes and handbags??

Justin

Why are people willingly walking around with a large logo on their sweatshirt saying "OLD NAVY" or whatever. As consumers didn't we already pay with money for the item? Why the heck are we giving so many companies free advertising? Same with children's backpacks with a huge Superman, disney or Spongebob....why? Is it me or is this thing annoying? As smart consumers shouldn't we avoid products like this?

Answer
Alot of it is "status symbol". To make it look like they have it made. And the
other..IS indeed free advertising. Plus, kids love winnie the pooh and batman

What is the best water gun currently on the market?

kids vintage backpacks
on ... to school, back to school accessories, back to school bags, backpacks
kids vintage backpacks image

Resh

During my childhood, my father bought a super soaker 2500 for me as a gift. Time has gone by and the gun has met its end. I checked for something the same size, only to find that everything of similar size and firepower has been taken off the common market and discontinued. All water guns like that are now practically collectibles. My question is, what is the most similar water gun (size, water output, and water capacity) that hasn't been discontinued and I would be able to find at a local Wal-Mart or Target? Also, if you own the water gun you're suggesting, how satisfied at you with it?

Answer
Unfortunately, the CPS technology that made the 2500 and other Super Soakers of the past so good has been abandoned by Hasbro/Nerf/Super Soaker; in fact, all of the current Super Soakers are either piston powered (you push a pump handle forward and back, and the amount of water displaced by that motion shoots out in a short stream) or electronic (a motor squeezes a rubber tube not unlike the way your esophagus squeezes your food and drink towards your stomach, generating a stream weaker than an old man's pee).

There are no more air-pressurized Super Soakers (the breakthrough technology that defined Super Soakers--you'd pump air into the water reservoir or into a separate pressure chamber, and pulling the trigger would release that pressure and water out of the blaster), and there are no more CPS Super Soakers (where water is pumped into a rubber bladder, and pressing the trigger would release that pressure, like a balloon deflating).

The last CPS-powered soaker was the Hydro Cannon from 2011, and the last air-pressurized Super Soaker was the Point Break, a humble pistol from the same time period. The Hydro Cannon fetches prices upwards of $40 on eBay, while the Point Break can still be found as old stock in some stores or online for roughly around its original retail price of $9.

Not only has Super Soaker abandoned CPS technology, but they have the patent on it and have successfully sued to prevent other companies from using similar technology in their water toys. So any non-Super Soakers you'll find in the stores are either piston-powered, electronic, or air pressurized.

Right now the only water gun currently on store shelves that bears any resemblance to the good old Soakers of yore would be the Water Warriors Drench N Blast (available at Target), an air pressurized water blaster made by Buzz Bee, Nerf/Super Soaker's most prominent competitor (and the company that was sued by Hasbro/Nerf/Super Soaker to stop them from making CPS-like guns). It claims ranges of 40 feet (most current Super Soakers only claim 25), and holds two liters of water in its reservoir (Super Soaker offers a 3-liter backpack as part of its "clip system" line of Soakers; other than that, their largest capacity "clip" is a 1.1-liter drum). It has two nozzles--a regular stream and a thicker "heavy drench" stream. Its one big drawback seems to be that it's a reservoir-pressurized blaster (rather than having a separate pressure tank), which means that with its roomy reservoir one has to pump a lot of times (100 pumps, albeit short, easy pumps) to give the blaster the pressure it needs to reach its full capabilities.

Aside from the Drench N Blast, the Water Warriors Python 2, also air pressurized, appears to be decent, a slightly more compact blaster for those who might not want to haul a fully filled 9-pound Drench N Blast.

That's not to say that the current Super Soakers are slouches when it comes to water fights--they may have short streams because they're piston powered, but the force at which they shoot out can be decently hard, depending on how hard one pulls on the pump. Their lower water output and clip-based system means that not only do they last longer in battle before running out of water, but refilling is also just a matter of yanking out the old clip and putting in a new clip that was filled earlier. So even if you're armed with a vintage CPS 2500, if you're facing down a handful of kids with modern Super Soakers, you'll still get drenched, especially once you're out of water (which will happen once you fire off half a dozen shots from that 2500). The new Super Soakers are less impressive when it comes to pressure, stream size and shot length, but they still get the job done. My personal favorite among the current line is the Arctic Shock, which, even without putting ice cubes in its tank, is a blaster that's well-balanced in its capabilities.

In short:
- Water Warriors Drench N Blast ($20 at Target) - most like the old Soakers, but requires a ridiculous amount of pumping
- Water Warriors Python 2 ($15 at Target) - a more compact, less powerful version
- Super Soaker Arctic Shock ($20 at Target--actually, currently on sale for $16) - a piston powered Soaker but with good stock capacity and a good balance of shooting characteristics--though it doesn't hold a candle to the Super Soakers we remember.

And of course, if you're willing to spend a little more, you can always pick up an old Soaker on eBay. A CPS 1000 or 1200 can probably be had for about $40-$50; if you want to relive your childhood with a CPS 2500 again, it might set you back $90-$150; and if you want the biggest baddest Super Soaker ever (the CPS 2000 Mark 1), you'll have to pony up $600. But it's the price you pay to scare the neighborhood and show the kids what a "real" Super Soaker can do. ;)

what new clothing and hair trends can i use for 7th grade this year?

Answer
Going into 8th!! <33

Stores:
Forever 21, Urban Outfitters,H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, anthropologie, Delias, Etsy(only online it's a vintage store), and Cute Boutiques so that you don't wear what EVERYONE has!!
Also, if you go on Abercrombie, check out the 'classic looks' and they have put together outfits, same with Hollister! (:

Shirts:
-Flowy tops are really in! They have adorable ones and tshirt types, mainly at forever 21, h&m, & delias.
-STRIPES! For those, go to Abercrombie, and the boutiques. Oh & Hollister, they have the best striped clothes
-Just a tshirt! But dress it up.. Roll the sleeves twice, wear a belt (maybe with a buckle) and and tuck it in if its long enough and pull it over your waist except at th belt buckle!
-A&F/Hollister tees.. But in 7th, they've kind of faded out. People don't wear them as much, they're really casual! But yet... Tshirts are better, which sounds weird haha
-Button Downs/Plaid.. Button downs are adorable! Maybe wear a cardigan/sweater over it and roll up the sleeves of the button down to cover the end of the sweater sleeve.. Plaid is good for fall!
-Sweaters! They can dress up any outfit, check out Nordstroms they have them in a lot of colors!

Bottoms:
-Skinny jeans are always in, and you can get them anywhere, mainly dark washes, white, & grey jeans.
-High waisted skirts (ADORABLE!) would be really cute for the first day
-A&F/Boutiques sell a lot of flowy skirts some have the high waist too
-Shorts.. Plaid(but only the short short for plaid!) floral, Jean shorts, khaki, colors, etc.

Jewelry:
-Bracelets! Get a ton, people wear even a few silly bands, and wide rubber bracelets, they have a ton of them at hot topic, the ones with sayings! And the I <3 boobies bracelets! Also the hand made ones in colors, & charm bracelets. Oh & power bands! Pink!
-Necklaces.. Maybe one that you could wear that's like a short string, or long clanky/chain sort of jewelry that you can wear to like a party but not much
-Earrings... Studs! Not like kiddy characters and like objects those are weird, hoops are good too if you're school allows them
-Rings.. Maybe a ring that you LOVE! but you don't really have to!

Shoes:
-CONVERSE ARE OUT OF STYLE GIVE UP ON THEM!
-Vans are okay, not my favorites... But a lot more in style than converse, and you can wear them like everyday
-Sandals! They have them everywhere! And they're ADORABLE!
-UGGs will always be in. Not kidding. Hahaa
-I LOVE to see someone wearing something other than boots, and you can find some adorable ones at boutiques and like Nordstroms...
-TOMS! I love toms! they're amazing and so comfortable!
-Sperrys... Ehh, still in style, but not as your everyday shoe!
just be creative with shoes... <33

Backpack
-Totes... Try and fine a unique one that you love like at a boutique or on a trip! A&f and Hollister have a ton though!
-Backpacks... North face, Jansport, billabong, ROXY, Quiksilver, LL Bean... Etc! (:
-Don't cover your bag in keychains, maybe like two.

Binders:
-Decorate them! Maybe draw name pics and put them in the cover sleeve, and have your friends draw them for you too...
-DUCT TAPE! just the side sleeve though and write the subject on it.. Covering it is way to much!

Hair:
-Straightened... Not everyday! Or at least accessorize or braid or something!
-French braids
-Braids back into ponytail
-Messy bun
-High ponytail (not with a part! Flip your head over and brush the hair back...)
-Side pony
-Natural.... Maybe blow dry though!
-NOT REGULAR BUNS!

What's in?
Check out seventeen magazine... And maybe teen vogue.
But what I listed above is what's in! Believe me! <33

For your first day... Look at a&f classic looks, h&m, ROXY... Etc. (:

Hope this helps! (: and good luck! Don't stress about 7th grade! It's easy so have fun! <3

Tips on how to be more organized?

kid ink backpack
on Kid Ink - Insane [Instrumental] |

Q. I'm going to college soon, so I'm going to have to be super organized and such. Give me some tips! I'd love to here what you have to say. I want everyone to help me- young kids and people who never went to college, too! Help me be more organized!

Answer
I've got a couple, based on what I've learned from my own experience and what I've noticed my own students doing.
First, you'll have a organizational thing-y for each class you're taking - whether it's a binder, or a folder or an accordion file. Be sure to have everything ready to go for each day in a different backpack or bookbag so on Tuesdays you know it's the green bag (or whatever). Keep each bag fully stocked with paper, pens, and the peripherals you'll need. That way all you have to do is put your laptop in the bag of the day.
Next, try using a variety of ink pens for taking notes in class (if you don't use your laptop to do so). For instance, use green for background notes or outlining, then use blue for basic facts that you'll need to know (bio's or formulas) and red for key facts that the prof says will be on the exam or quiz. That way when it comes time to study you can order rank your notes and study more effectively.
Also, do NOT highlight everything in your textbooks - that makes highlighting essentially useless. If everything is a high priority for you to remember then that means you are insecure about what you know and you're doomed to failure (not you personally, mind you. Just people who do this).

How to get my stolen glasses back?

Dillon

As an 8th grader I took my glasses off in art and left them on my stuff, all the kids that dislike me went over there when I left an when I came back they were gone! There were at least 7 kid over there and I don't know where my glasses are at, they are $150 to replace and I just got my new pair( which were the ones they stole) a few days ago, I searched the whole art room and they won't tell me where their at yet they keep saying they know where their at. Some people are jerks, they also keep making fun of me about it, what do I say and do
The principle already knows but didn't do anything about it! I don't want to get the police involved but I'm having help from teachers. Kids won't tell anyone where they are at

Answer
Fill a baggie with ink and put it in his backpack. Keep tormenting him till he gives them back or buys you a new pair. If that dosn't work and plant porno printouts in his locker and tell a student counselor that he tried touching your privates in the bathroom and say that you will get the police involved if they do not take action. In short make his life hell.

Where can I go primitive camping in the New York area?

Looking for a place where I can go primitive camping (open camping/dispersion camping) within driving distance (less than 5 hours) in the New York City area. Anyone know of a National Forest or park that allows this that they would recommend? One with great hiking would be ideal. I'm looking to go in the fall when the leaves start the change. Many thanks.

Answer
you can get to many places within a 5 hour radius of nyc...
in new york state you can go to the adirondacks or catskills (the catskills are closer but the ADK's are way more magnificent)...

since you're willing to drive up to 5 hours you can also get to places within new england such as vermont and new hampshire..in NH the area around mt washington and the presidential range has the best mountain scenery in the east

...as far as specific camp istes you'll have to do your own research depending on if you want to car camp, backpack or canoe camp and depending on how difficult you want

Travel from Mexico to Philippines? Has anyone taken a boat or plane from Acapulco?

Any personal information regarding backpacking contacts in Mexico, cruise lines, airlines, or best backpacking and camping routes is greatly appreciated. --thanks!
I have a valid US passport. I want to depart from Mexico or South America only. --thanks.

Answer
Hello, i think it's better if you fly domestically from Acapulco to mexico first or fly to usa internationally, and then mexico/usa to manila. From new york to manila costs about $1000 for a return ticket.

Which trail should I take for a 5-day Arizona camping trip?

3 day camping backpack
on Allen Trooper Day Pack Camo Hunting Camping Hiking Backpack | eBay
3 day camping backpack image

Canebrake

I live in Decatur, Georgia, next to Atlanta, and am planning a solo 5-day camping trip in early October within 100 miles of Flagstaff. My criteria are:

--water

--seclusion

--much beauty

--strenuous is OK, maybe preferred

--bonus: good side trails, especially historic ones.

Iâve looked at 3 AZ trail books, & narrowed my choices to 5: Fossil Springs, West Clear Creek, Secret Canyon, Bell, and Kelsey-Dorsey. (BUT, I'm VERY open to other suggestions.)

Iâm an experienced backpacker, with little experience in the West. Last fall, I spent 3 days with a buddy at Phantom Ranch--down North Kaibab, back up Bright Angel. 1st time at G.C. & 1st AZ trip ever.

I understand that some of these 5 are popular, but secluded on weekdays, especially in Oct. True? I'd appreciate any suggestions you have--the more broad and detailed, the better. Thanks so much.

Answer
I've backpacked both Secret Canyon, Fossil Creek and West Clear Creek. Both are very pretty places and meet most of your criteria above.

While Fossil Creek is one of the prettiest areas in the state, the distance from the trailhead to the springs is pretty short, so it would be more of a hike in and stay put for a few days trip - rather than covering a lot of ground. Also, Fossil Creek has got a LOT of attention lately due to a recent documentary about it. I don't know about week days, but it is pretty popular on weekends. If you do go there, be sure to take a little side trip down to Verde Hot Springs which is just up-creek on the Verde from where Fossil Creek empties into it.

When I backpacked West Clear Creek, it was by coming in the mouth of the canyon near Camp Verde (Bull Pen Ranch). There were a lot of day trippers (and trash) near the trail, but we had the canyon (which got progressively more pretty) to ourselves after a few miles.

While I liked that route, the upper portions of the canyon (going in near Clints Well) are probably more pretty, dramatic and have more solitude (certainly more strenouous). I've only day hiked a small section of the upper portion, but it was great (by the way, this section of the canyon was recently featured in Arizona Highways - including the cover photo). Be warned, that the upper portions in particular require some deep wading in places which could be cold that time of year.

One additional route that you should look into (it is on my list) is do a segment of the Highline Trail that runs just below the rim NE of the Payson area. It is one of the few that is long enough that you could do 5 days on the move. You will be moving from one spring or drainage to the next, so you need to plan camps around water. I have day hiked segments of it, and it looks like a great place for an extended backpack.

Can't tell you much about Bell or K-D.

Enjoy! That is a good time of year to be hiking in AZ. Be warned that the northern parts of state will be getting cold (especially at night) by that time.

What are the best brands/ styles for women's backpacking boots?

punk_pony

I am going to be a camp counselor leading 3-12 day backpacking trips this summer and I need some new boots. This is going to be the most backpacking I have done in one summer, and I want to make sure I have the right shoes for it. Most of the hiking will be done on well maintained trails with a bit of cross country. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Poppy: By "style" she probably means "type", like high-ankle, low-ankle, leather, mesh, etc.

Anyway Mosh, it's different for different people and situations. Are you going to be carrying a heavy pack or do you have weak ankles or anything like that? If so, you might want high boots to support your ankles in case you stumble. But those can sometimes rub more or become too hot, so think about it.

What will the weather be like? If it will be mostly sunny you might want to look for more breathable boots with some mesh so your feet don't cook. If you think it will be wet/rainy though, don't get mesh.

Don't get boots that restrict your toes, because they can get injured by walking all day in a cramped position. When you find a boot you like, try it in a half-size up and see if it's more comfortable. But also make sure your heel doesn't slip around too much or you might get blisters.

Make sure the arch feels good, and/or consider getting inserts. (This is very much up to your own experience and judgement.)

And of course make sure there are no parts of the boot that poke or rub or press on any part of your foot. It may seem like a tiny detail at first, but after a day it will hurt. Boots lined with a good amount if squishy padding are good because it ensures none of the stiffer materials will be resting against your ankle/foot. :) I have some Adidas and some Vasque like that, they both have great padding and never rub or give me blisters, especially the Adidas. But don't pick by brand, everyone's foot-shape is different and every brand is shaped different, so pick the one that fits your feet.

Also, always bring extra socks and duct tape or moleskin or something. :)

ideas on how to make a sewing class FUN?

Ideas on how to make a sewing class FUN?
I teach students 3rd through 5th grade how to sew and I want to make our hour in class fun for them while they learn. Any ideas?

Answer
Keep the projects quick and easy and colourful. Kids that age like things they can use and don't have patience for projects that take too many sessions to complete. Doing smaller items that are finished quickly builds confidence and it's easy to build up on successes with slightly more complex projects. A little drawstring bag made of quilting cotton for shoes or gym clothes is always a favourite when I teach little kids. I always allow the kids some freedom in picking the colour of fabric, as long a it's quilting cotton. Quilting cotton is easy to cut and sew and an excellent choice for kids because of the endless variety of colours and prints. A simple pencil bag is also a favourite. Simple pillows are also good. For the older kids a pair of pyjama bottoms from cotton flannelette can be a final project worth trying. For the younger ones a backpack or school bag works well. Don't fall for the allure of furry stuffed animals, the fur is difficult to sew for beginners and it can be be more frustrating than fun. Another project to avoid is an an old fashioned apron. Little boys will be lost because they don't relate to the item, and some little girls will rebel against such an old fashioned and slightly sexist project. (Trust me, I've been teaching kids for a while.) It may be traditional, but it's not the best idea. If you can convince the kids that they can make useful and good looking things themselves, they should become interested on their own. Kids love to be able to express themselves and show off what they have made, and sewing allows plenty of room for both.

I teach through a fabric store and part of the deal is that the kids buy patterns from the store. I recommend the Kwik Sew Learn to sew line. The first projects are quite simple, they even have a couple no-sew projects to teach basic cutting and laying out. Here's the page with all the beginner projects You can get a couple ideas of what type of things beginners can make: http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/cat_thumbs.cfm?Cat=Learn_to_Sew&Level=KWIK_Start&QL=KwikStart I start the kids with number 3525. The pattern 3595 is the pyjama pattern I use. If you do a search through about.com's sewing site there are a few similar free patterns you can use: http://sewing.about.com/

In conclusion, keep it simple, keep it colourful, and allow some creative freedom.

I'm planning on going next summer, I want to visit a good spot. It's gonna be me and two friends, I was first thinking somewhere around Ontario cause I also wanna check out Toronto, but it sounds like Western Canada is a much better location. I can't decide. Help?

Answer
Hey there

I've been backpacking around Canada on and off for the last year. Ontario is awesome, plenty to see and do. Toronto is great, lots of food, great people. Niagra falls is just around the corner, I'd definitely say if you're around there to check it out.

Like you said, western Canada does have a lot to offer. Vancouver Island (which rocks) is always high on backpackers lists. Lots to see and do. Scuba, surfing, kayaking, whale watching, hippie towns, (tofino), lots of hiking. Victoria is a super cool town, lots of great coastal drives. Plus Vancouver itself is just a cool place too. Everythings so close to the mountains too, couple hours out of Vancouver and you can rent a mountain bike and do some biking through the rockies. Lots of camping available around here too, as cheap as 10 dollars a night for a site (up to 30 for the posh campsites).

Check out my website on backpacking Canada, it might help you decide or at least help you out along the way.

Best of luck, and have fun!

Camping / Backpacking in Canada?

Is it ok, if you go to Canada, and just backpack through Canada, probably Ottawa, Ontario, and camp/canoe/fish in the wilderness, or do you by law have to go to a campground? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Answer
You can stay outside of campgrounds.Ontario Is pretty walkabout, camper oriented.
Of course, private land is or isn't accessible, but people are pretty friendly about allowing over niters.
Look up Parks Canada's website they should offer good suggestions.
Lastly, the area you mention is vast and rural, lakes rivers, forests.
There is enough space for you to join us.
My farm is on the bicycle, motorcycle tour route,my neighbour has people on his land often.
Just don't litter and watch your fires and come on down(or up !)
Bring your blackfly gear.
Also, depending where you going to be,the gov't campgrounds are some of the most beautiful and easy to find privacy.
If in Ottawa, head to Algonquin Park area,or if you are mobile ask about Charlston Lake area.
Sorry for the rant but your question made me think of good times.
