I don't have a kid, but seems like the society make a big deal "going back to school"?

and I didn't grow up here. All the TV ads these days are gearing towards the back to school sales. Are parents here really get their kids all new cloth, new computer, new backpack, new stationary every year after the summer? is it so important to kids to wear new cloths going back to school? is your kid be judged by how he/she dressed in school? what about that thing called "study"??

Answer
It was very common for me to get new clothes (for school and the winter) right before school starts. I would also get supplies: Notebooks, calculator, pens, pencils, etc. at that time.

Retailers are pushing the back-to-school sales right no, since, because of the economy, sales are down sharply.

On the other hand, my wife always got her "school" clothes in November ... when fall and winter clothes make their way to the clearance racks.

Should schools do away with uniforms?

I am a teacher and I don't see how the uniforms help at all. I mean the kids know who's rich or poor. The thing that kills me is the uniforms cost more via the store the school picks or even going to Walmart to get them since they aren't on clearance. Most parents could spend a lot less money and still dress their children well. Those who aren't going to care about their kids aren't going to buy the uniforms anyways. I think this is just a politically correct way to let lazy parents have some feeling of control

Answer
I go to a catholic school with uniforms, and I can definitely agree on the students knowing who's rich or poor any ways (example, girl in my psychology class had a $350 Coach backpack, with an Ipad 2 instead of paper and binders for notes and such, and $200 Coach cover/case for the Ipad. You didn't need to know anything about the girl, just seeing her you could see that she was well off)

And I also agree with the expense of the uniforms. For one uniform shirt where I go it's like $35-70 dollars (depends on which style you get). There are never any sales at the uniform place, or none that I know of, and the money spent on the over priced uniform could be better spent on clothing from places like Walmart. And the uniform you can't really wear outside of school, whereas cheaper more affordable clothing from say Walmart could be worn on a daily basis. I have a friend who's family is struggling, so there's been many times that's she's had to miss school because she didn't have enough money for enough uniform for a week, and not enough money to do the laundry as often as needed.

Tl;dr , In short, I think that schools should do away with the uniforms.
