Backpacking for Spring Break? Maybe an old growth forest?

Alright me and a couple of my good friends really want to go (tent) camping for spring break but have no idea where to go. I would love to go camping at an old growth forest but do not even know where to start. We go to Louisiana State University and do not mind spending an entire day driving to a destination. I would prefer not to stay at a campground , so does anybody have a suggestions.

Ps we are all very skilled campers

Between the months of March and April, the Wild Azalea National Recreation Trail is magnificently overflowing with southern pink azalea blooms and winter-white dogwood.
