backpack camping illinois image
zack
I've never been camping before. I plan on going on a smaller trip near where I live in Illinois and it would be about a 2 day trip. Ill be using that trip to familiarize myself with what i need to know. Summer of 2013 I want to go on a 5 day trip hiking/camping by myself or with one or two other people. I would enjoy more scenic routes but have them slightly backcountry so i wouldnt deal with anyone. It would have to be in a Midwestern state, and I would prefer to hike near a river or body of water (maybe waterfalls?). That being said, what would be a good place to start looking, have a decent level of skill required (can be on a mountain), and be within my boundary zone of the Midwest? Also, what would be the most practical things to bring? I plan on having a 60L backpack. Thanks for the help!

After you have broken-in your backpack, come out to Colorado for a five-day adventure.
Meanwhile, you should probably explore northern Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, or northern Minnesota.
Sylvania Wilderness Area, Watersmeet, Michigan, is a great little chain of lakes for an overnighter.
Backpacker Magazine can provide ideas on what you should take into the outdoors.
In my pockets, I always carry a pocket knife and fire starter, tissues or lint packets, along with several bandages in my wallet. Although reception does not exist in many gulches, I carry a cell phone that usually functions above tree-line.
In my daypack, I have compression sacks that hold my down jacket, heat packs, windbreaker, and down mittens or lighter gloves. I carry a second fire starter and two headlamps with extra batteries. I pack trail snacks, such as cheese, nuts, and rice chips. Attached by carabiner, I have at least two water bottles, sunglasses, reading glasses, and global positioning system. On most hikes, I also carry a water filter.

Any good place to go backpacking/camping/hiking in Wisconsin or Michigan?

I'm looking for a nice place to go hiking for a few days. Looking for a unique area that is fishing accessible and that would have a waterfall. I live in Illinois and I'm looking to take a trip out of state but somewhere close like Wisconsin or Michigan. Any ideas would be helpful.
