Good High School Backpack?

summer2010

I am in need of a good, durable backpack for high school. I don't want anything that has a lot of girly print on it (maybe some stripes, but plain is okay with me), but I need it to hold at least five 1 inch binders, a couple of text books, and some regular reading books. The color doesn't matter too much, except I don't think I want a backpack that looks really guyish. Also, i'd like to have room for misc. items that I may need for swimming, and also pockets for pencils, pens, ipod, etc. I like high sierra, the north face, adidas and jansport brands, but I can't find anything i really like that's at a -reasonable- price.

Answer
some of the makes you've listed came up on this website, I don't know if you've seen these already or if there at a reasonable price for you but.. >http://best.lovetoknow.com/Best_School_Backpacks

Apparently Land's End or LL Bean backpacks are very durable and worth the price unlike some others you might find.
And there's some other links
http://uk.thenorthface.com/tnf-uk-en/equipment/day-packs.html?p=3

and I think this is the best site for what you're looking for defiantly. There not too girly, but you can tell there for girls, and its at a reasonable price.

British Flag School Bag?

Q. Hello! Recently I have become obsessed with things from the UK and for school next year I'd like to get a bag with a British Flag on it! But I need one that's big enough to carry all my books. Any links? I'm going into my Freshman year by the way. And if it's one that you order online, it has to be able to get here fast because we're moving soon. Thanks!

Any advice to my son going into middle school?

XxATLfan4l

Answer
Just make sure he KNOWS what is going on and what he is responsible for. He must also be highly organized and keep track of assignments and deadlines in an agenda (be sure that you check it every night).

Elementary schools tend to hand-hold kids, but once in middle school they are expected to be more independent. Just remember, in elementary school he had a few teachers and was in a class with maybe 25 - 30 kids. He will now have 7 classes/teachers a day who will each see about 150 students a day.

If he is absent, it is HIS responsibility to ask for the missed work...no one will hand it to him (or remind him) like when he was in elementary school.

If he is late to class without an excusable reason, this is cause for detention or a referral to the office (they don't play around in middle school).

Also, school lunches will be a little different. In elementary school, he maybe had a choice of 2 meals from the school menu. He will now have the option of eating french fries, pizza, and other junk food everyday if he chooses (most middle school cafeterias are like a mall food court - - - and people wonder why we have an obesity epidemic in this country!) ~ sorry to get on my soap box.

If your son is worried about being stuffed into a locker as is depicted on nearly every 'tween sitcom, there is no way that is possible. The lockers are so small, you can barely hang up a winter coat (don't buy a backpack with wheels either...it will never fit!). Have him practice using a combination lock at home so by the time school starts, he will be an old pro.

He will also have to get used to changing for gym class which he did not have to do previously (I think it is highly outdated, but I don't make the rules).

Finally, enjoy him for the next 2 years! Once he hits 8th grade, if he is like many boys that age, he will become possessed by hormones and do anything to get girls' attention. He will probably be highly annoying to you, but just know that it is a phase that will soon pass (even though it sometimes seems like an eternity).

He will do fine and within the first 2 weeks or so, he will really enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that he has.

Backpacks vs Totes to High School?

Raindrop11

I am getting ready to start high school, im a girl, so backpack or tote? I've heard both sides and still don't know! I am not going to public, Im going to private school, if that makes a difference! I don't want to seem stuck up, but I don't want to be the only one with a backpack either! I am not a tom boy or a girly girl, im inbetween. So far im leaning towards totes. Does anyone know what size is a good size to bring that can hold all my books? Where can I buy them? please post a link or give me a store name, i dont care about name brand! Do girls carry them to classes, or do they put their totes in their lockers and carry a smaller purse to class? Do most girls carry purses to class anyways? If not then what type of backpacks seem popular? please post a link to common designs! Thanks for your help!

Answer
Well everyone I know at my public school wears a backpack. Some girls carry totes but they aren't good at all for keeping them organized. These girls are also the girls who never turn in their work because they lost it or it fell out somewhere. You could try getting a messenger bag. They have really cute ones. Also at my school we never had time to make it through the crowded halls to get to our lockers sometimes. So in your backpack or whatever you choose just keep your binders or folders with important work and leave your books in your locker.

Some girls carry smaller purses but not a lot so that's your choice too.

Here are some pictures of messenger bags:

Try goin to target for some cute backpacks/totes/messenger bags as well. Before school starts they actually have tote bags that are made my jansport so they have room for books, pencils and all that stuff!

Is this a good backpack for a girl in high school?

I need a new backpack for school, and i want something that is going to be sturdy. ( the last time i bought a backpack at staples, it broke the second I picked it up and it was a piece of crap). Hammock camping, whats your setup?

agnotheist

I want to go backpack hammock camping through the rocky mountains. However I have no experience. I have 500 dollars to spend on equipment. Assume I have nothing to begin with. Ground up I need to know what to buy. Backpack, water container, hammock, hammock accessories, everything i will need. I just need some examples of what works. I need to survive mosquitos and temperatures dipping around 20-30 degrees. So give me specifics. Thank you bunches :)

Answer
Ok, well to be more specific hammock camping in the rockies is not the best of plans since much of the best countryside to hike in and through and too is above tree line which means a hammock will be useless. and in freezing temps impossible to properly insulate. Since you say you have no experience it is best not to experiment where other methods have been proven. I already suggested to you a very well known hammock that is affordable, in contrast here is a well known multi season tent it, costs more but will meet the need experienced on Rocky Mountain treks,
http://www.rei.com/product/764121/big-agnes-copper-spur-ul3-tent

So lets go over the basics starting with a check list,
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/backpacking+checklist.html

Most checklists are expansive you can and should adapt your list to the type of trip your taking by adding or subtracting gear that suits your needs but never go without the 10 essentials.

Now about packs, what type of pack you need depends on the length of your trek and the type of climbing you will need to do a one summer night over night-er you can get by with a minimalist amount of gear and a simple day pack will get you through. a week+ long trek to any of the 14ers and you will need a large multi purpose pack which I would recommend since some of these models break down to smaller summit packs. Many also have built in hydration systems which I also recommend. I have several different types and models,

For water needs get a purifier and use stainless steel bottles or the BPA free nalgen bottles make sure your water purifier works well with what ever bottles you choose. you need to carry a full days needs or more depending upon the distance between your water sources at least 2 liters of water per day.

When hunting I prefer an external frame pack and use this one
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Alaskan-Guide174-Model-Camo-Pack-with-Frame/747130.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dhunting%2B%2Bpacks%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26x%3D24%26y%3D9&Ntt=hunting++packs&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

With general trips I have internal frame models and use this one the most
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gregory-Palisade8482-80-Backpack/1166904.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3DGregory%2Bback%2B%2Bpacks%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26x%3D29%26y%3D10&Ntt=Gregory+back++packs&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

Cold weather you dress in layers here is an article about that
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/dress+layers.html

For mosquito's nothing beats deet based products the more deet the better the protection.

Leather CPR is also my favorite tack cleaner 2 in 1 I'd DIE without it

Please be respectfull. Thanks for answering! :)

Answer
My horse: I have a four year old OTTB ex steeplechase horse named Buddy. He's a dark bay no chrome(markings) gelding and he basically saved my life. I've never really told many people this, but ever since my best friend committed suicide last year I've been depressed, moody, angry, and I have post traumatic stress disorder. I had been in a mental hospital three times and wasn't getting better, until I met Buddy. I had been going down a self destructive path in life, failing out of school so badly I had to switch schools, losing the great relationship I had with friends and family, trying out some of the negative coping skills my best friend had been doing before his death. It was all going wrong until I met him. I originally didn't like him much, I had my heart set on a big gray 17.0hh OTTB named Moose, so when I met Buddy I didn't pay much attention even though he was very loving and curious and a big baby. Then I met Moose, who wasn't as loving and was spooky, and on the way home I couldn't stop thinking about Buddy. I went back a few days later to see him and try him out, and he was the best thing that had happened in a long time. He may have bolted with me twice and spooked at nothing, but he was the kindest most curious and loving horse I had ever met. I instantly fell in love with him, and the way I get through the day is by thinking about him and how I'll get to see and ride him after school, or the next day. He saved my life, and the only way I can think to repay him is by loving him back unconditionally. He may be naughty sometimes but we work through it and yesterday we jumped two cross rails and he didn't even flinch, and we cantered around the ring twice without him bucking or getting fast, or breaking to the trot. I was so proud of him, and I would give up everything just to be able to spend the rest of my life with him. Sure I like the things I'll list below, but I don't need anything but Buddy Boy in my life. He's the perfect boy, he'll never hurt me, or dump me (except maybe on the ground if we have an off day haha) and he'll be by my side no matter what. Even if he gets injured and becomes unridable, I wouldn't dream of having any other horse. My only want is to care for him for the rest of his/my life and make him as happy and comfortable and talented as he has potential to be. Sorry for the soppy stuff, I just kind of wanted to come clean about why I'm so obsessed with him and this seemed the place to do it :)

For outfits/clothes: I LOVE my Kerrits riding pants, they feel like sweatpants are easy to get on/off. They also have a cargo sort of pocket where I can keep my phone without it falling out while I ride. I also love my Dublin river boots, they're waterproof so when I cross the creek to get my horse I don't have to mess with the stepping stones, they're also super comfortable and warm. Lastly, my IRH riding helmet. It's comfy, fits my head like a glove, and is suitable for showing. I got it free off of a friend, it's in brand new condition, no cracks, she's never fallen in it or dropped it.

Supplies that don't go on the horse: I love my Blue leather leaner, it gets the saddle and my show boots very supple and well conditioned. Also my Bay enhancing shampoo, it gets Buddy from a mud crusted mess to a shining and healthy looking dark bay.

Supplies that go on the horse: This is all part of my matching garnet ensemble! Haha. I have my Centaur bell boots that are great because they double lock and fit my horse perfectly, then we have my Dover saddlery quilted pad that was on sale and works great with my saddle, my Woof splint boots to keep him from knocking himself, my Vac polo wraps for helping keep him supple in the winter (I only use them on the back legs), my Formay halter and lead rope for they are durable and strong and don't rub him, and my Irish knit cooler from state line tack because it's great for trailering or keeping him warm while evaporating sweat.

Tack: This sounds like it's not a very good one, but I love my no-name brand $80 saddle. It's comfortable and fits ever horse I've ridden it in. My Mylar bit is a staple, my OTTB Buddy can get a little spooky sometimes and bolts too (He's only been off the steeplechase track for 2.5 months, and he's only four) so it keeps him in check. . My Lettia synthetic with sheepskin girth was another staple, it's actually pretty flexible. It fits my old horse, a big bodied Belgian cross, and also my kind of Chubby 16.1 OTTB with no problem, it's a 50".

I'm bored, so I figured I'd throw in a lot of things, why I love them, and my brands haha, sorry that it's so long! I would recommend any and all of these products, they weren't expensive and didn't break the bank and they all work great and are versatile.

Camping in Michigan. Where can we legally pitch our tent? South West Michigan Camping.?

Edward M

We are looking for some woods and water in SouthWest Michigan where we can legally camp. We definitely don't want a packed campsite with showers and electricity. We want the full blown nature experience. Where are we allowed to camp? Does anyone know how that works? Any good websites? Any suggestions or advice? We want a place where we can park the car, hike into the deep woods and pitch our tent next to a lake or river. I don't know the laws for camping. What do I need to look for?

Thank you very much for your help.

Ed

Answer
What you're describing is called "backpacking." It is the best way to camp, explore, and enjoy the outdoors, because you're entirely on your own, carrying everything your need to survive (at least for a few days) on your back.

Michigan Hiking Guide

Wide Awake on Lake Michigan - Sleeping Bear Dunes has lush forests, level trails, 400-foot bluffs, vast sandy beaches - and you thought the midwest was just cornfields. http://www.nps.gov/slbe/

Across Isle Royale by Foot - The Greenstone Ridge runs along the spine of Michigan's Isle Royale National Park. Located in Lake Superior and accessible only by ferry or seaplane, Isle Royale is beyond the reach of the auto.

Backpacking in California?

kazu

I am planning my first backpacking trip ever from San Francisco, my home town. I plan to be gone for more than a week. What are the basics as far as gear/food that will keep me alive for that long? As far as destination, I will be heading south for the milder weather. Are there any suggestions of any good paths I may take? The one requirement I have is I want to stay on a lake/swimming hole/river for a while. Which mild temperate areas containing someplace nice to swim are free to backpack in? Once I get my gear in order, I would like to leave asap. Kind of trying to be off the grid for a while. Looking for a place where I can swim/fish freely, stay for more than one day, and do it legally if possible. My large dog may or may not be coming with me. Lets say I've got around $300 to spend.

Answer
That's more than can be answered in one question. Here are some books I use for reference:

Basics on gear, techniques, what you need to bring: http://www.amazon.com/Hiking-Backpacking-2nd-Essential-Techniques/dp/0897325842/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259524221&sr=1-5

Guide to EVERY car camping and backpacking campsite in the Bay Area. I'm not sure if there are any with swimming, but they are good for beginner trips because they are close to home, at lower elevations, and usually have a few amenities at the campsite (running water, toilet, table). http://www.amazon.com/Camping-Backpacking-San-Francisco-Area/dp/0899972950/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259524392&sr=1-1

Guide to backpacking California. This one covers the whole state, from the deserts in the south to the Sierra to the far north. http://www.amazon.com/Backpacking-California-Mountain-Foothill-Adventures/dp/0899974465/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259524472&sr=1-1

Another good resource is Backpacker Magazine, and their website http://www.backpacker.com/

In the winter, the best places to go would be places in the Coastal hills (like the Santa Cruz Mountains) where it is wet and cool all year round, or in the deserts/forests of Southern California. I don't know about swimming, fishing, or bringing your dog - you will have to check out specific trips to see if that is going to be an option.

Unfortunately, backpacking is an expensive sport. $300 isn't going to get you very far unless you can rent or borrow your gear. Outdoor stores like REI rent gear, so go there and ask them how much they charge.

I keep getting sites for camping spots that are covered in concrete and have swimming pools. What is up with that...guess I am looking for something more primitive, a real back to nature experience. Any websites that can refer you to that type of camping spot?

Backpacks for teenage girls? Where to get them?

Q. Like everywhere I go they only have the stupid elementary and middle school backpacks, any suggestions on stores? Thanks. I like the leather flap backpacks or like the Brandy Melville ones ( but Brandy Melville is WAY too far from where I live)

Answer
A lot of clothing retailers sell the leather-flap backpacks you're talking about. Check out Urban Outfitters, Modcloth.com, Forever21, H&M, and Pacsun if you're interested in that type of backpack.

Jansport is actually making some pretty nice backpacks nowadays--way better than the L.L. Bean-styled stuff younger kids wear. I've got one with a faux-leather bottom. Delias.com carries some of their more interesting prints and styles, but if you're looking for a more toned-down option just check out their website :)

Hope I helped!

Back to school backpack- what do you think?

Q. its the one with the flowers on it (you might need to scroll down a bit)

do you think it's cute? im gonna be a freshie in high school. my second option is a black mudd backpack but it is a little elementary/middle school so it is last resort.

Answer
It's cute, but generic. 10 others girls will most likely have a bag exactly like that or something similar to it. It's not necessarily a bad thing though.

Are backpacks that bad?

The Book o

For High School girls?

I know that satchels, totes, and Messenger bags tend to be more ideal for High School girls, but is there anything really wrong with your run of the mill jansport backpack?

BQ: What type of bag do you use for School?

Answer
I used a backpack all through high school, and in college, I'm using this one - http://www.jatalo.com/shop#ecwid:category=0&mode=product&product=4808268

It's a cool bag - for every bag they sell they donate a year's worth of textbooks to a kid in need - so even if it's a backpack and not a super stylish tote or something, it's cute and for a good cause.

Best camera bettery wise and force proof?

Kaylyn

I am going to Alaska on June 15th for a 15 day backpacking trip in the mountains. While on this trip I want to be able to capture as many photos and videos as I can on this trip of a lifetime. I am trying to find the best camera to get and take with me. Thank you for all of your insight.
How long will the go pro last? Battery wise?

Answer
If I were taking a "trip of a lifetime" and backpacking for 15 days, I would take several backup batteries. One Flickr person I know takes at least 6 batteries for her camera when she hikes the Himalayas. Download the GoPro manual from GoPro and see what the battery is rated at. If you are going to be in cold, the battery will appear to die quickly. Keep a spare next to your body to swap. When the spare appears to die, swap again. Batteries hate the cold, but recover quickly.

Other cameras to consider, which are rated for rough handling are:
Popular Photography â April 2013
Sony Cyber-shot TF1 - $198 (need reviews)
Fujifilm FinePix XP60 - $198
Pentax WG-3 GPS - $297
Nikon Coolpix AW110 - $347
Olympus Stylus TG-2 - $379
Panasonic Lumix TS5 - $399

What is the hottest tablet out now for a college student?

Jala

I ma going to be starting college this fall (2013) and my parent said they would buy me a tablet for college. I was wondering what is the best one out there? I want a tablet because I would like to take my notes on it and be able to access some of my books on there because I have a back injury and wont be able to have a super heavy backpack. I don't care about the size but just as long as I can get wifi, notes, internet etc.
I really like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 but there is also the Samsung Galaxy 8.0
The 8.0 has the 4.1 Jelly bean update and the 10.1 has the Ice cream sandwich update. Which one is better? They both come with a stylus as well. I have the Samsung galaxy s3 phone so i am familiar with the products.
But then I also have looked at the new ipad mini and the ipad with retina display, because I have an ipod and am familiar with the apple products. But they both don't come with a stylus and aren't as compatible with a stylus like the Galaxies.
Please help me choose!! or what tablet did you love or do you love now? What really helped you? What tablet did you use for college?

Answer
I like the Galaxy Note 8.0. Its a phablet kind of stuff. 8" screen is almost perfect.

Review on Galaxy Note 8, should help you in making this decision:
http://www.amazon.com/review/R2XVV1I6M74Y44/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00BQH8UEY&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=aajemt-20

Yes Galaxy Note would be the better option for stylus and noting purposes.

Both Note 8.0 and 10.1 can get Jelly bean update so it should not be an issue.

iPad Retina display is better compared to Note 8 but price is too high for the feature it offers. Whereas in some places like the processor. Note 8 takes the lead with Quad core processor over Dual core processor.

Here are some really cute bags that you can use for school!:
I'm guessing you want somewhere to keep your books (correct me if I am wrong please so I can redo this), but I would recommend using a tote such as the following (all in your price range!):

high school :S Help!?

Bee

I'm going top move to the U.S, and go to high school there. My schhol is way different then school there.
i'm afraid that i will get made fun of, because people there wear differnt stuff to go to school.
it sounds stupid, but do they take backpacks or like big purses to school?
and what do they wear, like clothes? (like brands..)
thank you.

Answer
abercrombie.com
hollisterco.com
aeropostale.com
pacsun.com
tillys.com
wetseal.com
roxy.com
ae.com

Like messenger bags is what most girls including me use at my school aeropostale has some. Above are some sites that have clothes that alot of people at my school wear including me. Oh and you don't have to have really expensive designer labels like chanel and dolce and gabbana because alot of kids in high school can't afford them. Not to be mean or anything but if you want to look like a prep then chanel and stuff would be a really good idea but I wouldn't suggest it.

Is it a good idea to go to go backpacking in Glacier National Park in late May?

Chris H

Two friends and I are putting together a backpacking trip for late May. Since our other plans fell through, we're looking for some good alternatives.

We've all got a TON of camping experience (including plenty of cold weather trips and 15-32F nights). We've also got a decent amount of backpacking experience. We don't have a whole lot of back country mountain experience.

What back country trips are possible at Glacier NP in late May? Is it a good idea, or are the trails too dangerous this time of year? If we do go, do we need any special equipment. Snow shoes?

Answer
Late May is definitely not an ideal time for backpacking in Glacier. It's still pretty snowy. Trails can be hard to find, steep snow slopes would almost definitely have to be traversed. Unless you're comfortable snowshoeing and using an ice ax in case you fall, I wouldn't say it would be the most fun trip ever. It's a weird time when things are melting, and if snow is slushy than an ice ax really wouldn't help you much anyway. Alot of the backcountry campgrounds will still be snow covered as well.

Alot of the lower elevation areas (far east and far west sides of the park, like Apgar and St Mary) will be melted out by then, but the higher elevation parts (like Logan Pass) will definitely still be snowed in. The road that crosses the park, necessary to get from one side to another, is usually not open until early to mid June. Also, most of the better hikes go up high or cross mountain passes and will still be snow covered. Be advised as well that the weather is still very unpredictable this time of year, and it will definitely still get cold at night.

You'll get the benefit of snow capped mountains, gushing waterfalls, and no crowds- but you will also be severely limited in what you can see and do, both by car and on foot.

If you're planning a trip, I'd suggest waiting until at least mid to late June. Visitation starts really picking up for the summer around 4th of July weekend, but thats usually around the time that all the trails are completely melted out as well. If you're trying to plan a trip for this time of year, I'd suggest seeing some of the national parks in the more southern states, where you don't have snow to worry about and the oppressive heat hasn't quite set in yet.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

Who has been to Glacier National Park?

madhawk78

I am thinking of doing a hiking/camping/backpacking trip to Glacier NP this summer. Anyone out there have any advice, tips on such a trip? Is it worth the trip or are their better places to go. I was in Yosemite and Rocky Mountain NP last year, so any comparisons would be nice as well.

Answer
I have not actually been there yet myself, but am doing a week-long backpacking trip there this summer and did a lot of research in preparation.

By many accounts, Glacier NP is one of the best hiking and backpacking spots in the country. In fact, it routinely ranks at or near the top of Backpacker Magazine's annual survey. That is one of the reasons that my friends and I decided to make it this year's big backpacking trip.

I would highly recommend that you get the National Geographic Trails Illustrated map of the park which shows all the trails, camp spots and roads. I also got a couple of trail guides entitled "Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks" by Erik Molvar and "Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park" by Vicky Spring. Both are quite good, but if I were to get just one I would lean a little more toward Molvar's as a little more practical and easier to use. For general sightingseeing guides to the park and area, I got the travel guides by both Moon Publications (Becky Lomax) and the Insider's Guide (by Susan Olin). The Moon guide was quite helpful and detailed, while the Insider's guide was little more than a local business directory.

A couple of things about hiking and backpacking there...

It can be challenging to find good loop backpacking trips. Most will end up being out and backs or point to point requiring some sort of shuttle. The one exception is the famous 'Northern Circle' loop in the center of the park (starting near Swiftwater).

You must have permits to camp overnight in the backcountry. Although they always reserve some walk-up permits, most spaces can be reserved in advance by faxing a request. Note that the reservation period started on April 15 and so it may now be difficult to get popular spots between June and August. We sent in ours before the deadline and are waiting to hear if we got our intinerary.

Glacier is famous for bear country - both black and the grizzly. While attacks are comparatively rare, the park website has a video on what to do about bears and there are very tight restrictions in the backcountry around storing food and eating in a special designated 'eating spot' away from the tent spots.

Aside from hiking and camping, a few of the other things that Glacier is famous for...

Historic Lodges - In or around the park are some of the most historic and famous lodges in the US park system. The lodges at McDonald Lake, East Glacier and Waterton Park (Canada) are particulary grand and well known.

Going to the Sun Road - The famous road that bi-sects the park and is considered one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Lake Tours - Many of the larger lakes have historic tour boats that take you out on scenic cruises.

Whatever your choice, have fun!
