My boyfriend and I are planning to go camping and I was wondering what would be a good checklist of everything to bring? I'm just thinking of personal items, he's bringing all the equipment and stuff. I don't want to pack too heavy. Hope you can help

Answer
Look at checklists and choose according to your needs. You should be able to get everything into a backpack. Shop the outdoor recreation suppliers if you need specialized clothing, such as base layer, fleece, down jacket, rain shell: Patagonia, Columbia, Eddie Bauer First Ascent, The North Face.

Is camping safe in the forests of Michigan?

Roger

I plan on going up north camping with some friends however we have never camped before. We also plan to camp in a wild forest instead of a designated camp ground. My friends tell me they do this all the time but my parents are a bit skeptical, is it safe to camp in the forests alone away from campgrounds? This area is also close to Lake Michigan by the way. Thanks.
Safe meaning from dangerous people (like strangers), animals, etc.

Answer
Camping in the wild is a lot of fun and a challenge. It is not "Banned" as another stated but it is regulated based on where you want to camp. The State parks and National parks have the tightest regulations and private lands too of course but if the land is in the National forest area's you have no problems at all. As for dangers the only wild animal that poses a problem are bears they will find you and invade your camp if you don't take proper food handling procedures, cougars/puma or mtn lion are very rare and so elusive and fearful of man I doubt you even see tracks. Humans are always a factor specially if your trespassing, the land owner can have you arrested or even shoot you. In the national forests I would not worry as everyone else is in same way watching out for one another. here a couple of links with info on bear safety and what to bring

I want to leave my job and travel around South America for five months next year. Am I Crazy?!?

dmartell18

I have a 50K a year job (not stellar, but good for a single 27 yr. old male). Next June I want to quit and backpack around South America for 4-6 months and just be free and see the world. I've been actively planning this trip for a month or so now...learning espanol, saving $, checking flight prices, reading Lonely Planet backpackers guides, etc. While most people think it at least sounds like fun, one of my best friends in the world (who happens to work for the same company) thinks it's the most retarded thing he's ever heard of. He thinks I should stay put and focus on retirement and positioning myself to buy a house. I *think* I'll still have a job when I get back, but I may have to take a pay cut/demotion for such an extended leave. But I'm willing to go even if it means losing my job. AM I CRAZY? Should I seriously re-consider this trip?

Answer
Your "friend" is the kind of person who will end up being 65 years old someday never having gone anywhere and never having done anything. Except slave away at some company, that is.

Don't listen to what other people say. Listen to yourself.

I traveled for a year after college (was 25 at the time) around the Pacific Rim--Australia, NZ, Fiji, and up through SE Asia. Came back to the US and worked for two years, then said "f**k it all" and left again. Lived and worked in Europe for two years. Came back to the US and worked for 3 years, now I'm ready to head out again. I leave in two weeks to live and work in South Korea for a year. I'm currently 33. Who cares what your age is?

BTW, I'm still saving for retirement at the same time. When I'm working, I put money away each month in a Roth IRA and various mutual funds. I probably have more in savings than the average cubicle worker who never travels or does anything! :)

If you want to travel DO IT NOW! Once you are tied down with the "3 strikes" (Mortgage, Marriage, and Kids) your life is over.

We have this really screwed up sense of reality in the USA that the point to life is to get a job, buy a house, "settle down," live in Suburbia and acquire mountains of material possessions along with rivers of credit card debt. If that's what you want, stay at your job with Corporate America.

If you want to feel alive, get out and see the world. Travel, you won't regret it. You only live once.

Tj

What do i put in it?

Ok, Cody's answer was pretty dang funny! Nothing wrong with a Army rucksack though. Not the most comfortable option for backpacking but it will meet the minimum requirements.

1. Map and Compass (May Supplement with GPS Receiver)
2. Flashlight or Headlamp
3. Extra Food and Water
4. Extra Clothes
5. Sunglasses and Sunscreen
6. First Aid Kit

What is a comfortable backpack for heavy items?

Screwblum

Sophomore year and I have more books than I did last year. I've been using a Dakine backpack for a long time and it has held up great, but I'm looking for something more comfortable with how heavy everything is.

I want something that has a place for my laptop, comfortable for carry ~50lbs for hours at a time, and as many pockets as possible.

Answer
Hi!
I heard good things about this backpack apparently the Military uses this kind of technology that is use in this backpack. The Shopping Channel sales it here is the link that well take you to the backpack that I am speaking about:

http://www.theshoppingchannel.com/Backpacks/Airbac-Campus-Backpack-with-Air-Comfort-Technology/pages/productdetails?nav=R:510546

(Product review and benefit tabs are underneath the item to read about the item)

The Shopping Channel also carries other backpacks to all you have to do is type in "Backpacks" in the search engine!

I hoped this helped you out!

What type of backpack is best for international travel?

Kylee

During my trip, I will be outside and very active most of the time, so I need a backpack that is comfortable (preferably lightweight), durable, and can carry what I need for the day.

I have never travelled internationally before and I am not sure what to expect or what type of backpack will be best. I have seen good reviews about The North Face backpacks as well as the Ogio Fugitive backpack. Which brand or specific backpack is the best for travel and being outdoors?

Answer
One that conforms to the airline size/weight limitations otherwise it will end up in the hold!

A good backpacking destination?

Im only 14 atm and in year 9. But I wanted to go backpacking or hiking somewhere when I finish school. Where is a good destination? I've never really been a camping person and more of an inside, computer guy but I like sport and enjoy sport and all that. And I think I would enjoy backpacking and/or hiking. So I was wondering what are some good destinations?
My idea is to start of small by doing something in my own country (Australia) Like hicking from point A to B to C to D and then a plane trip back home. Or doing the kokoda trail. What do you guys think?

Answer
Yes, you could explore your country, but its going to be expensive and time consuming as your country is too vast. You could try New Zealand.

Europe's the best as its very varied in everything and geographically too, so you can see much more than you would in Australia.

Well, I could recommend you to come here to Singapore, my Country too:0 Its great and you could backpack to Malaysia and South Thailand. I would suggest Singapore, KL, Hat Yai, and Back:)

What should I take with me For a 3 month S.E Asia backpacking trip for the first time?

Sum One

Hello Everyone I will be Backpacking for the first time in my life from May to August.. I am very exited but of course this is my first time so I am kind of nervous and clueless..

What should I pack with me ?
SHould i bring a suit case or just buy one of these Camping back pack?
Laptop or no etc....
How to manage my stuff and all that ...

Thank you. & please.. Helpful insights + advises only.. no jokester please.

Answer
1...A well made safe secure belt bag (money belt) for your passport, travel insurance documents. airline ticket, cash, cards, etc.
Wear at least one layer of clothing over it.
See on here for details and styles, advice etc...see the link on it.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091129114006AAd3zd9 . . .

2..Two ways to travel
a....A 65-70L backpack, well fitted in a proper camping store with well trained staff
It's your back doing the carrying.
b...A suitcase with wheels. OK if you're not doing any walks but backpacks will put up with getting slung around by airport baggage handlers better than suitcases will unless you get a very very good case.
For cheaper ones, expect to find no handle on it sometime when you collect it from the baggage hall.
Handles are good for slinging cases around with......I worked in an airport ten years....I've seen plenty of that.

Two ways to pack.
a...Cram it with goodies, saw the kitchen sink in half for easier packing, take half a house and everything else you might need .
Lug it all around, more and more every week as you buy stuff abroad, and buy another bag to cram stuff in.
Repack at the airport to save $100 excess baggage on the return flight for $50-worth of worn clothes and then you can keep the assorted goodies collected on the way round.
Post stuff home to avoid carrying it for weeks. Post is safe, even from remote regions.
I lived in SE Asia for three years, traveled around, still travel.

b....Go with a shoulder bag or a mostly empty backpack and get stuff there.
Just take some essentials like a change of clothes, some toiletries and washing kit, a copy of Lonely Planet South East Asia, sweets and biscuits for the plane to nibble between on-board meals, camera, maybe a phone, if you have one that works in Asia.
All over the world there are people who go shopping and shops to sell things to them.
Mostly much cheaper than at home all over S.E.Asia .
You can buy ANYTHING.....cheap.
Last trip to Peru and Chile I took a shoulder bag and came back loaded with local goodies and crafts in an 80l pack with no extra baggage to pay.
Not the first time I've done that.
Go empty, come back full

No laptop. Too want-able by others and just more weight to carry around.
All the backpacker hostels have internet so you can book the next hostel, local airline tickets etc, email home.
Hostel booking sites...Hostelbookers,Hostelworld,Hostelz.com etc. All are safe and reliable for hostels and budget hotels worldwide.
Example in Cambodia. This one is a motel. Start saving early...it's $6 a night....six US dollars
http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/cambodia/banlung/ . . . . .
http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/cambodia/ . . . . .
Internet cafes can be found even in some remote villages with satellite or TV cable links if they don't have a normal phone line, not just in the towns.
Use them to phone home...around 50c a minute. You'll see the ads outside...cheap international calls.
English is common or a mixture of English and local....PC internet baang...Internet Phong etc
Example in stressed out South Korea which has 20 000 internet cafes.....they're not all so bad, just most of 'em,haha
This'll sum it up for South Korean kids....
http://blog.andthensome.nl/wp-content/images/addicted.jpg . . . . . .
http://www.world66.com/asia/northeastasia/southkorea/internetcafes . . . . .

Don't look rich, don't 'brag' ..don't upset the locals. Be friendly.
When you travel you are an example of your own country. For some people in remote areas you will be the first they see of a real one, not just TV stuff.
It's your chance to shine and help in your own small way for international relations....
In Muslim countries like Malaysia, always dress modestly.....no minis or low tops.
In the hostels there will be people from almost anywhere in the world.
Go shopping together and share the food costs. Help each other in the hostel kitchen and learn from each other for different cooking styles and recipes.
Go out together. Take care of each other...you're all in the same boat, far from home.
You could be a really good locally trained wok expert when you get home.....
Like this...paint the ceiling black first if you try it at home
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x75ei4_cuisine-au-wok-au-thai-village-a-au_travel
You can get some weird combos and highly interesting flavours with a western European African Vietnamese main course and Russian cabbage soup with pickled Cambodian snake cutlets and fresh tomato......
Or just do a lasagne....you'll find all you need for it....
Have a load of fun.....

How much does a trip to backpack through Europe cost if your from american in american dollars?

bamboohott

im looking for a price for the next 4 years. about in the year 2010. how much money would it cost then to find about 20-30 people then pay for yourself and one other person? please give me all rates(plane/boat hotel rental, equip cost) anything you can would be great as well. Thank you!

Answer
FOR A ONE MONTH TRIP

AIRFARE: $800-1000. (cheaper if you live on the east coast)

LODGING: approx. $600. for 30 nights -- shared hotel or youth hostel ($20+ night/per person.) Slightly cheaper if camping. I can't remember how much camping fees are.

TRANSPORTATION: $750. --- Eurail Pass is $635-1 month. Average taxi ride from airport $60-75. Average taxi ride in town $10-15. Average subway/bus ride $2. or less. Boat tour in Paris $12-$20.

MEALS: $300. per person. Store bought food. No restaurants. No fast food. You can eat for $10. per person (per day) if you are smart about it.

So, it looks like you could use $3,000. per person for a bare-bones but semi-comfortable, month-long trek through europe using Eurail and staying in modest places, such as IYHA Hostels. This does not include drinking, shopping, phone calls, gifts, entertainment or emergencies. You might be able to trim $500. from this if you know people to stay with or aren't afraid to really "rough it."

I'm so sick of the same old jansport/high sierra backpack every single year. I'm going into eighth grade and i really want a cute trendy backpack but it has to be able to fit up to 4 textbooks in it that are about twelve inches tall. Plus notebooks, pencil pouch, and stuff. So...thanks!

Answer
Don't listen to the girl who said girls don't use backpacks past elementary school. She is an idiot. I am a junior in high school and I can assure you that a majority of the girls at my school still use backpacks, even the most fashionable ones. Try looking into Delias and Tilly's for cute backpacks. Hot Topic also has many backpacks with a variety of colors and designs. Good luck!

What to get a 13 year old girl for her birthday?

Lauren

She is happy with pretty much anything, as she says it. She isn't very girly, so mall gift cards and make up aren't her thing. She likes vintage retro things and loves music, but she claims she doesn't need any more music gift cards either. She already has a phone. Does anyone know what she might like?

Answer
Hi,

Here are some ideas you may like. Pick some of them or use all of them to make your little one's special day unforgettable.

1. Call her friends, throw a surprise birthday party and get a cake custom-made

You can get a birthday cake customized for your little girl. Find out her favorite cartoon character or anything that makes her excited. You can simply ask the cake makers to make a cake shaped like a doll if she loves dolls. Make sure the cake is big enough for the crowd.

2. Arrange games for the kids

The Whispering game can be a good choice. Kids are fascinated by this game. This game helps them to modulate their voice. It takes a lot of concentration and thus, makes the kids aware of sounds. This game can also come in handy when you want your kid to be quiet. You can also go for the 'Don't fall in the sea' game. Encourage the kids to consider the carpet as the sea. Encourage them to reach the other side of the room without stepping in the sea. Place cushions, magazines, paper plates etc. across the floor and use them as stepping stones.

3. Party favors!

You can create various baskets having some items. You can put crayons, play doh, soft balls, stickers etc. in a basket and gift them to the little ones. You can also give away gift cards of McDonnalds because kids love to have fries and other food items available at McDonnalds.

4. Pick a nice gift for your little one and give it to her in front of everyone

The joy of people clapping for her gift will be bigger than the happiness she has for the gift itself. So, pick a good birthday gift for her. You can gift her the betseyville sequin backpack that will be great for her school. This is a fun sequin-embellished backpack with adjustable straps and top grab handle. It also has a 2 drop magnetic snap closure and 1 large zip pocket single internal zip pocket. You can create a gift basket for your daughter with the help of this bag. Pick a large bamboo basket and set retro style sunglasses, some soft toys, a doll, candies and new dresses around the sequinned bag. Decorate the basket with flowers and ribbons. You can also check out some other backpacks featuring Princess prints on http://clothing-and-accessories.become.com/betseyville-sequin-backpack--compare-prices--sc1630825375 and eBay.

Can a 15 yr old carry on a lighter on a plane?

camping backpack as carry on airplane image

Aight so my mom is flying out with me to a summer camp and I already got myself hooked up with some 'stuff' there, just no lighter.

I researched that you can bring one on a carry on, but I'm only 15 so they might call me out on that one. Also my mom CANNOT see that I have a lighter. Would they let it through no problems if its just one small BIC lighter in my backpack? Or take it out in front of my mom and ask about it?

Thx :p

Answer
There is no problem bringing a lighter in your carry-on. Their primary job is not to try and catch kids with things they really have no reason having. They are more concerned with things that could be a threat to the airplane, crew, or other passengers. Also, as it goes through the screening they don't spend the time to match up a bag with a person..so they would really have no idea if the lighter belongs to a 15 year old or a 115 year old.

The problem you have is that IF something in your backpack triggers an alert as it goes through the screening. They will pull the bag, and the owner of the bag(in this case you) off to the side and do an additional screening. This screening would include them opening the bag to resolve the issue. So it could be possible that they pull out the lighter and your mom would see it.

Does anyone know of some good hiking or backpacking magazines?

I am looking for a good trail magazine. I know of some out there but they are mainly about gear and advertisement. Maybe one that reviews and talks about different trails around the world. Even the not so popular and kind of out there ones, something adventurous. Any information would be helpful.

Answer
The main backpacking magazine is Backpacker. Each monthly issue has a main focus in addition to regular trail reports, training suggestions and stories from hikers. They do have a big gear review issue each spring, but other issues focus on things like the best National Parks, survival skills or a focus on a specific region. The current issue (March 09) is a review of the best hikes around the world. While I have found the main articles and trail reviews to be pretty good, the magazine has also become somewhat formulaic in the last few years and their gear reviewers have never seen a piece of equipment they weren't thrilled about.

Outside magazine is another one that is pretty popular with hikers and backpackers. Outside covers all sorts of outside recreations including running, biking, skiing, boating and extreme sports. They frequently have hiking and backpacking articles as well as more generic articles that apply to multiple activities (ie: basic training tips, etc).

If you are mostly interested in looking for recommendations on finding specific trails, than I would recommend the large Falcon Publishing series of trail guide books which cover most states as well as books focused on specific parks or regions. The books give good descriptions of trails, key mile points, descriptions of camp spots and often a rating system for finding hikes based on certain criteria. Most popular hiking areas will also have additional trail guides published by local authors. You may want to consider doing a search on the Amazon website for the areas you are interested in hiking.

If you want to get a good cross section of hike reviews and trail guides without having to buy a lot of books, then you may want to consider getting a subscription to Trails.com which has most of the Falcon books (and trail guides from other books) online where you can view and even download single trails from a variety of the books without having to view or buy the whole book each time.

And lastly, if you are interested in reviews of hikes from around the world, than you might want to check out the book "Classic Hikes of the World" by Peter Potterfield. Potterfield provides detailed descriptions and photos of 23 the world's best hikes.

Is the North Face Big Shot backpack good for high school or just school in general?

cSpizzy

I need to buy a new backpack for my son who is in 10th grade. Would the North Face Big Shot be too big and look inappropriate for daily school? Please give me your opinions and reviews if you own this backpack. Thanks!

Answer
At this ebags.com page for the backpack, there are 24 reviews for the backpack. (scroll down the page) Maybe they will answer your question.

http://www.ebags.com/the_north_face/big_shot/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=109320

What's also helpful is the photos of the mannequin wearing the bag. It really helps in understanding the actual size of the bag.
I think ebags.com is having a sale on the North Face bags right now, if you want to order them online. Most of the other bags also have several reviews. I just bought a Bandwidth. I love it but haven't used it yet.

OK I know that if she is not interested in me it's her loss and at 20 I shouldn't take it so personally, but when I was at school I was always told by a bully, you're useless, you're stupid, you won't amount to anything and for anything like sport or academical success, I hardly got any praise from people other than my parnts.
In nearly all cases I'e proved the asshole wrong including backpacking round Europe and Australia aone, doing well after 1 year at university and have good set of friends both at home and at university.
This is just the only thing I'm unconfident in and it's where I feel unhappy in my life (everytime I'm miserable it's because I feel I can't have an intimate relationship with a woman or will never be good in one). Any help please?

Answer
That particular person is an ABSOLUTE LOSER. Bullies only put other people down to make themselves feel better because they are really the insecure ones....is there a particular girl you are interested in? If there is go for it you have nothing to lose as u said, but I'll give you some advice - don't treat it so much like a date but a friendly meeting the first time, and just be yourself, don't tell her about your insecurities or anything on the first date just be confident in yourself...you will see if you get on well on your own and judging on the vibe you will know whether to arrange another date or not...
hope I helped! :)

Backpacking through Europe?

totallystu

My friends and i are planning to go backpacking through Europe when we graduate from high school. We plan on getting to most countries and sending quite a lot of time over there, a couple of months at least.
Around how much money would we need to spend lets say four months traveling, not including plane flights to and from Australia (where i live). I mean the necessities like food, laundry and travel expenses.
We plan on staying in hostels, is this the best way to go (and the cheapest?)
We will be around 18 years old and all girls, maybe four of us. Will this be a problem?

Answer
Hi, it all depends on which cities you plan to visit because some are more expensive than others. A friend of mine did the same thing all by himself and he spent around US$2000 in one month. It seems a bit too much to me and I'm sure he didn't stay in hostels or if he did he probably stayed in private rooms. You'll be fine staying in hostels, just take some precautions at night especially in subways and train stations in big cities (just like anywhere in the world). If you give a little more information regarding how many countries you plan to visit I might be able to help you a little more. But you could take into consideration that for instance a train ticket from Madrid to Barcelona is around â¬50 (if you take the night train you can save money by not staying in a hotel that night). A train from Venice to Rome is also about â¬55 but if you plan to visit many cities maybe it's better if you get the eurorail pass which has a range of prices depending on your plans.
For the laundry, probably around â¬3 (washing machine & dryer)...for food, if you buy some bread, fruit, cheese and water you might spend around â¬5 maybe a little more maybe a little less...as I said it depends because some cities are more expensive than others.
If you and your friends plan to go to eastern europe, I recommend you go to a hostel called the boathouse it's a great place, very nice and modern...(it's in Belgrade Serbia).

Good luck getting that bag! :-)

My daughter starts nursery school in January, what will she need?

Lottie

My little girl is 3 in December and starts nursery school in January :)
We went for a tour a couple of months ago and she is already super excited to go to school. I noticed all the kids coats and backpacks hung up on the pegs and it got me wondering what she'll need to take with her?

They get a cup of milk and a piece of fruit at break time so I don't need to take her a snack.

(We're in the UK btw)

Answer
Your daughter shouldn't need anything!!! (I'm also in the UK)

Then again, it depends on the nursery.
The nursery my twins go to, supply everything.....including spare clothes, drinks & fruit.
But the nursery my cousin's son goes to doesn't supply clothes......it doesn't even matter if YOU supply them, they still call her up to come and change him!!!
So you need to ask about this!

My twins used to take back packs to school.....they were just full of toys......nothing that they actually 'needed'.
The older kids have book bags, as they are allowed to borrow books from the nursery.
All nurseries are different though.

Where can I camp / pitch tents on a cross-country bike tour?

camping backpacks for men image

Alex

I'm graduating high school in a few weeks and since I'll be taking an infamous 'gap year' between high school and college, I've been planning on biking across the country â my parents are willing to fund the tour as my graduation gift.

I know that most people do these kinds of tours as part of a group but I have heard of others my same age (~18 years old) who complete this on their own; I think doing the trip solo will be a fulfilling challenge and, not to be cliché, but it will also be good for 'self-discovery'. I'm not oblivious to the dangers of doing this on my own, however.

I don't plan to stay at hotels/motels every night so I am wondering where I might be able to camp. I do plan on using campgrounds, but since they may be hard to find at times (and potentially expensive), are there any alternative locations where I would I be able to set up a tent free and legally?

The side of the highway? The middle of a park? Someone's backyard if I ask for their permission? (Couch-surfing may also be part of my plan). I won't be making campfires or anything, I probably won't even 'pitch' the tent (as in nail it to the ground), I simply plan to sleep in a 1-man backpacking tent for a few hours before hitting the road again.

Being honest with myself, a full coast-to-coast tour might be a little ambitious since my funds may be limited, but at the very least I'd like to be able to make it from my hometown of Seattle, WA to Austin, TX â and then back again.

The camping question is the main thing I'm wondering about (I'm researching all other aspects of the tour as well), but if you can offer any answers or advice at all, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Answer
You should probably check with the various states that you plan to traverse, some allow roadside camping and some do not. As a general rule, roadside rest areas are a viable option, although they may not be the safest place.

Where to find people to go deep woods camping with?

Mike

I'm looking for other people who are into camping/hiking in rougher conditions than normal. My friend and I (both 20 something year old guys) like planning survival vacations around the world when we're not working. Every few months we'll go somewhere big and live in the woods for awhile and we're trying to find like a website or club or group of people who do the same.

Not any militia end of the world types either, looking for Intelligent/interesting/sane outdoor enthusiasts, men or women. Any good sites to check out or adventure blogs?

Answer
In the US, the Meetup.com website has location specific groups for various activities. Just in my medium large eastern city there are several backpacking groups where people post outings or look for like-minded trip companions. It doesn't cost anything to use it.

There are always going to be challenges when you are a" stranger" attempting to find people in remote locations who are willing to commit to this sort of outing. You have to count on them to trust that you yourself are "intelligent/interesting/sane" and you have to do the same leap of faith for them,. with no guarantees on either side. So, though such a network of travel companions would be ideal, it is not all that easy. There used to be a site called "Travelchums" through which I was able to locate some excellent trip partners for parts of the world where I wanted to do wilderness trips. But it unfortunately folded.

You might want to check the classifieds in Outside and Backpacker and other wilderness sports mags for social networking groups that connect people with this sort of activity interests. Also, the massive social networking site PlentyofFish.com, though usually viewed as a "dating" site, is also an excellent free place to locate people with similar (and non-romantic) interests world wide. You can check the forums on there for an interest group or run specified searches on area and interest.

Look for forums on line under "survival camping" or "primitive backpacking" too. I like browsing forums to find people who share interests. Following their posts can give you a good sense of what kind of person they are and whether they are BS or not.

If you are good at "hunting and gathering" for sustenance in the woods, you should be clever enough to use your imagination to "hunt and gather" some buddies to do it with, right?

What´s the best way to teach reading and writing to my 8 year-old?

I have a 8 year-old boy, and I´d like to know what´s the best way to teach him how to read and write. Is it buy flash card, pc software educational games, what could I do to help him understand the sound of each word and letter?
Thanks.

Answer
Because of the information you gave in your previous question, I know that your son has significant speech and language delays. Based on this information, I would suggest that you not rely only on phonetics based instruction. Lots of kids who are delayed in speech and language have a very difficult time with phonics - first with learning the sounds associated with the different consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, etc., and then with the ability to fluently merge those sounds into a word. It's a very complex process that depends largely on skills that are delayed in your son.

I highly recommend a sight vocabulary approach to reading for children who do not have strengths in speech and language. In a sight vocabulary program, the child learns to look at a word and say it, not to sound it out. As a special education teacher, I use multiple approaches to reading instruction, dependent on the abillities of the particular child, and I have specifically found the Edmark Reading Program to be very successful with many kids who could not benefit from a phonics-based approach. (Type Edmark Reading Program into a search engine and you will find lots of info and sources to purchase the program if you are interested.) The child learns one new word at a time in a very systematic way. In just a few lessons, the child is reading short sentences such as "I see a horse." The activities also give practice in reading comprehension, so the child is not just saying the words aloud but also demonstrates that he understands the meaning of the words. I can't tell you how many times I have had a joyful child say something like, "Listen to this! I can read!" It really helps kids think of themselves as successful readers, which is a big part of the process.

I would still encourage phonics-based activities, because a truly fluent reader needs to be able to sound words out. And you can do it in lots of fun ways; I have collected boxes of different items that begin with different letters/ sounds; for example, our B Box contains things like Batman, bicycle, bird, bandaid, basketball, Barney, backpack, Blue (from Blue's Clues), etc. Then we play games with them, such as "I'm thinking of a B word. This is something that people read. There are many of them in the library. It's a ...." and then the child supplies the word "book."

And of course keep reading to him for pleasure. Computer games are also great. But I highly recommend that you focus your reading instruction on a sight vocabulary approach. Edmark really works for kids with learning disabilities and language delays.

What are some ideas for a 10-page picture book that a 3rd grader might enjoy?

Ava

I am doing this project for school, and need to make a 10-page book (with pictures)... and it's kid-friendly with an age group of about 6 to 10.

Do you have any ideas for my story?

ANY idea is great, so please don't hold back or be shy! =]

Answer
Each page can represent a major event they do in school. For example, on page:

1) Kids arrive by bus, dropped off by parents, walked to school.
2) Teacher greets the students while they put their jackets and backpacks away.
3) Teacher takes roll-call while students do their opening assignments.
4) Recess.
5) Lunch.
6) Assemblies.
7) Field trips.
8) Going to the nurse's office or principal's office.
9) Arts and crafts, PE, Music, Computers, etc..
10) End of the day... going home.

Pages may not be in that order and may have different topics than I used. These are just ideas for your book.

Sorry. Not feeling very creative, right now. Usually, I have much better ideas.

____________________

What kid doesn't like recess? Each page can be about what kids do at recess. For example:

1) On the swings.
2) Soccer, basketball, kickball.
3) Tag, hide-and-seek.
4) Play on the playground equipment.
5) Dig for bugs and worms.
6) Wall-ball, four-square, jump-rope.
7) Playing games that you'd have to pretend.
8) The teachers that supervise the playground and kids.
9) Tether ball.
10) Lining up to go in/out.

Again, not necessarily in that order and may change the topics.

____________________

Other book topics can be: Assemblies, Field Trips, Lunch, PE, etc.. Every kid in your target age-group- boy or girl- can relate to any of these topics and enjoy them.

You're welcome and enjoy.

i'll be going on a 25-day trip to europe in the spring, where can i find cheap traveling backpacks online?HELP

backpack reviews best internal frame

PuNkRoSe

Plus what is the difference between the backpacks that have internal frames and the ones that have external frames? Which backpacks do u guys recommend???

Answer
Check out ebags.com - they have a huge variety and tons (literally, thousands) of user reviews. The one I've posted the address for is 60$, 50$ if you have AAA. I'll be using it for 35 days in Europe in the fall. The price is a lower than others I've seen online, but has gotten really really good reviews.

Your frame depends on what you'll be doing and how you're getting around. If you'll be camping and carrying a tent, sleeping bag, etc, go for an external frame - really good for hiking and when you'll be carrying a lot of weight around.

If you'll be taking the train and staying in hotels and hostels, you can get an internal or frameless backpack. You also need to decide between a rolling bag and a convertible bag (one that you can carry by hand, over your shoulder, or wear like a backpack). I'm getting the convertible one because it will be good for getting on and off trains, traispsing through the stations, etc.

Things to consider:
- most external frame backpacks are expensive, and will not fit in your carry-on restrictions.
- rolling bags heavier, expensive, and may not fit in the carry-on restrictions. they're good for flat surfaces but hard to lug up and down stairs
- convertible bags are smaller, but most will fit within the carryon limitations.

Check out ricksteves.com for tons of travel info - and you can use the helpline to ask other travelers for advice. I don't work for him, but I'm on there all of the time!

And congrats on doing your research this far ahead!

Suggestions for a durable internal frame?

Josh

hi. I'm looking for a durable internal frame backpack that I can do some hardcore hiking with. There are two things I'm looking for in my pack, a rain cover, and 65liters or more.

one pack i was looking at is this one- http://www.rei.com/product/795605/deuter-act-lite-65-10-pack
but some of the reviews said it's not very durable.

Answer
That is a great pack it will suit you fine.

How do women from other countries carry so much weight on their heads?

The schoo project im doing requires coming up with a solution to help people carry weight that they arent supposed to carry. Average man is supposed to carry 15% of their weight, but many people carry more and backpacks for school kids also cannot hold a lot. Im doing some research and found African woman can hold 70% of their weight on their heads, but how do they do it?

Answer
One reason for the African woman's ability to bear loads effortlessly seems to be her posture. As a girl, she learns to stand so straight that her pelvis and vertebrae line up like a well stacked pile of blocks.

Another reason may lie in her gait. At the beginning of most persons' strides the head bobs up and the body slows; then as the foot moves forward, the head dips and the body accelerates. This bobbing and dipping and accelerating and decelerating requires a lot of effort. But African women put all their energy into moving forward. The vertical motion is absorbed in the bones and soft tissue. Hips bob less than ankles; shoulders bob less than hips; and the head (with its burden) bobs not at all. Thus, while most people bounce along like wagons on egg- shaped wheels, African women move like wagons on round wheels.

I tried putting in some references for you of interesting articles but everytime I do I get ERROR 999!!
Try typing a sentence from above in google to find it. There was also another interesting paper in Nature magazine..

Why cant kids wear backpacks in middle school?

Michelle

i cant wear backpacks to school. wud up with that.

Answer
At my middle school and highschool they won't allow backpacks or bags in class because they suspect that you're carrying a weapon or illegal things. Back when I was in 8th grade (3 years ago) some kid brought a rifle to school and put us in lock down. And he was expelled. That same day, we had a bomb threat that I nearly got expelled for. I was so in shock I couldn't cry or anything. It was insane.

Q. I don't go to a public high school and everyone in my school just carries a Jansport backpack. So I was wondering what type of backpacks do public school girls carry? Do they carry tote bags, big purses, or just backpacks? Also, I heard some girls carry a backpack and a purse.. Is that true?

Answer
I go to a california public high school and I see girls wear Coach, Juicy Couture, and even Louis

Vuitton. Others just wear Jansport or some cute back pack from Hot Topic. I wear a leatherette tote by

What are "scene kids"?

JP

or who? What make someone a "scene kid"?

Answer
Scene kids are like a preppier version of goth or emo. At least according to my friends.
The sterotype of scene is they have teased and dyed hair. It's very big and dramatic.
The girls carry around backpacks that are the shape of stuffed animals or carry a stuffed animal around. They like dinosaurs and Bob Marley. Some of them smoke pot and are bi-sexual. In my town, they go to like this music club thing (idk what it is, i've never been there) but my friend said apparently they smoke cigarettes/pot all night while listening to people play songs on their guitars/ukeles. The girls wear a lot of makeup and the guys tend to straighten their hair. Both genders prefer skinny jeans. Here's a pic of a scene girl. http://tipdeck.com/how-to-be-a-scene-kid
