Quetico camping trip?

wild boar

So I'm going with my brothers and dad to the Boundary Waters around Quetico Provincial Park. I've never really been camping and I can't remember the last time I slept in a tent outside overnight. We will be there for 4 nights. I'm really excited and I know that it's gonna be some tough, rough work, but I really don't know what to expect besides that. Can you give me some pointers, tips, precautions, or personal experiences that you have? I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Answer
Ya u sure are right! But it's never like the movies about camping! so maybe picking up fire wood for about a half a hour is the worst it's ever gonna get! You should relax and enjoy the trip. If you are not good at swimming stay away from water because sometimes they have currents. You might what to bring tometo sause and yes I have had a personal experience from that. Lol! I need some help! How do can you make a gently used backpack look new?

downdogsdo

Answer
MENDING
Backpacks tend to break in two places. The breaks either happen in the straps or there's a huge tear in the corner of the bag caused by the pressure of the books. These can both be repaired at an alterations shop.
Professional alteration shops have the commercial equipment needed to stitch through nylon webbing and canvas. In our community, these repairs can be made between $3 to $7 which is far less expensive than buying a new backpack.
If your child's backpack is torn, it's always best to have it mended first before tossing it in the washing machine.

PRE-WASH/WASH
Unless your child's backpack is made of leather, it can be washed in a regular washing machine on the cold water, gentle cycle. Before tossing it in the machine, stains should be pretreated first.
To remove the greasy and grimy dirt stains on my children's backpacks, I mix up a solution of Dawn dishwashing detergent and apply it to the stain with a scrub brush. Scrubbing the stain in a circular motion will eventually lift the dirt. For ink stains, we use a bit of hairspray and apply it with an old toothbrush.
Once the backpack has been pretreated for stains, it can be washed in the machine. After laundering, allow the backpack to drip dry overnight. Do NOT place in the clothes dryer.

SHAPING
Some backpacks have a bit of a shape to them. To preserve the shape, these steps will help:
1. Blot up excess water with a towel.
2. Roll up two or three beach towels and pack inside the backpack. Adjust the towels so they are tucked into the corners and "fill out" the backpack into the proper shape.
3. Let dry overnight.
4. The following day, remove the towels and check the backpack for dampness. If the backpack is still wet, it can be set on a dry surface to finish drying.

ADD ZIP
Like most kids, my daughter wants a new backpack every school year. How we solved this problem was to buy two backpacks and rotate them from year to year. On odd years, she brings her orange pack and on even years, she uses the green one.
To add something a little extra to the backpacks to make them "fun" again, the following embellishments can be added:
*** Key chains and lanyards can be attached to the zippers
*** Colorful character buttons can be pinned to the fabric
*** Draw mod daisies, geometric patterns, or other fun patterns using fabric paint pens.
*** Glue sequins, buttons, press on earrings, or other embellishments to the fabric surface.
With a decent backpack running anywhere from $25 to $40, it makes sense to use those packs as long as possible. By mending the breaks, giving them a good wash, and adding some fun embellishments, your child won't minding reusing her old backpack over and over again.

what supplies do kids need for 7th grade?

Katie

Answer
BASICS
- No. 2 pencils
- Mechanical pencils
- Colored pencils
- Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)
- A large pink eraser
- Ballpoint pens (Get a few red ink ones too, because some teachers have students do peer editing.)
- Highlighters
- Spiral-bound or composition notebooks
- Loose-leaf notebook paper (Teachers can be picky about paper. Some middle schools ask that students use the college-ruled variety.)
- A ruler with English and metric measurements

ORGANIZATIONAL HELPERS
- Several three-ring binders (Some teachers require that a binder be used exclusively for their class.)
- A three-hole punch (a regular one or one that fits in a three-ring binder)
- A pencil case that fits in a binder
- Binder dividers (The kinds with pockets are good for loose papers.)
- Pocket folders
- Folders that fit in binders
- A small notebook to record assignments
- A calendar for scheduling assignments
- A sturdy, supportive backpack (Some schools do not permit rolling backpacks because of space considerations, so check with your school before considering this option.)
- Two combination locks (If the school lockers do not have built-in locks, your child might need one for the hallway and one for the gym.)

STUDY AIDS
- Index cards, ruled and unruled (These are great for making flash cards.)
- Highlighters
- A calculator (Check with the math teacher first before investing in an expensive one. Graphing calculators, for example, are required in many high school math classes. Teachers advise parents not to buy a calculator with more functions than students will use.)
- A protractor

Where are some places to camp for free in Hawaii?

GregoryBra

I don't want to be bothered. I only want to be alone on the island. I probably will be on foot. Gregory Brandt

Answer
Sound like my kina trip, ok? You know, my fav island for be alone, and camp for free gotta be Lanai, problem is, need car or jeep to get to best camp place, and NO surface fresh water there, ok? Molokai good too, got some good surface water, but some local not to happy to see haole on foot with backpack, and most beaches not gonna have water for drinking, less it a state beach, ok? If it a state beach, then suppose to have permit to camp, which cost money, ok? Remember, not lotta state or federal land hea Hawaii, mostly private, or watershed land, and lotta problem for local with tresspass onna private property, so expect to be hassled and have police call on you, ok? My suggest stay way from more populated islands, like Maui, Oahu, or even Kauai, go for Big Island, or Lanai, maybe be careful with Molokai, cause local there not real friendly with mainland person who just wanna bum round island, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!

what a good camping/outdoor knife and WHY?

Robert

Answer
Everybody has their own opinion on what makes a good camping and outdoor knife.

Some think that you need a multi-tool to fix gear. Frankly, I usually have one with me when I'm adventure camping, (specifically, a Leatherman Surge), to help with vehicle and gear repairs, but I don't carry one when camping or backpacking. But otherwise I find they are too bulky and heavy on my belt to carry when hiking and backpacking. I could keep a multi-tool in my pack, but then what good would it do me if I am separated from my pack when I need it? And, in the woods, most of the tools (and therefore, weight) on a multi-tool provide no benefit, unless you are driving a Jeep, quad or other off-road vehicle, (and even then, I'd prefer real hand tools to a multi-tool).

Others believe a good camping/outdoor knife should be a medium fixed-blade knife capable of chopping and batoning wood for shelter and fire in an emergency. Something like a Short Ka-Bar, Ontario RAT-5 or Gerber LMF-II fixed-blade knife. My problem with this is the same as a multi-tool: it is not comfortable to keep on my belt, and so it's effectiveness as a survival tool is lost if I'm separated from my pack.

Most hikers and backpackers go with something that's easily carried in their pocket but can provide some basic necessities beyond a good knife blade. A Swiss Army Knife fills this bill nicely, as does some of the smaller Leatherman multi-tools. Things like a toothpick and tweezers see a lot more use than files and screwdrivers on the trails.

Ultimately you need to decide what your philosophy will be on knife carry. I developed mine through 35 years of backpacking, hiking, camping, off-roading and daily carry. Throughout this process I've collected about 30 different knives and multi-tools. The one I carry every day, to the office and to the woods, is a Victorinox Swiss Army Compact.

I want a website full of backpacks for an 11 year old and you could wear on your back (none with wheels) and is big. I want websites with them. Some cool girl ones. Thanks! And I don't want them too plain. Like I don't want plain pink ones. I want school ones. Ones I could fit books in good.

Summer camp packing!! Any tips? :)?

Bailey

Summer camp is in two weeks! I have all the normal things, i was wondering if there was anything extra you find makes summer camp fun! Ive heard exta batteries, clothespins, and a handheld fan. Thanks!

Answer
Also packets of crystal light or any kind of lemonade mix because the water at camp tends to taste weird. Also i personally prefer to drink loads of lemonade than water haha. Also Im 15 but people still bring those magazines that have the posters in them like tiger beat and M because its always so much fun to have your cabin decorated with lame celebrities. It sounds strange but it makes it more home-y lol. For some reason when i packed a spray bottle last year it came in handy So much. I sometimes put my water in that and squirted it directly into my mouth and that of others because some people dont bring water everywhere. And the best part is that you can spray your bodies too and its the perfect misty refreshment. Mine was 2 dollars at cvs or walgreens. I dont bring handheld fans but a plug in (this is if your camp's cabins have outlets) small like 7 in. in diameter fan is great for keeping your bunk cool. Target's RE collection has them for cheap in all sorts of colors. Dont forget to bring a shower caddy to hold all your shampoo, conditioner, razor, etc.Target also sells those in many colors. I also found this list of stuff to bring from another yahoo answer's person named " hunnynut " lol. Anyway its really helpful so im gonna paste it in here. Camp counselor packing list and tips?

AllyBerry

I'm going to be a camp counselor, it's 12 weeks with 3 weeks of off-site outreach. We've been told to pack clothes in a bin, bring a duffle, and bring a back pack. There are laundry facilities and the camp is providing detergent. I can go home on Saturdays if I want to but I'm only going to that a couple times. I feel like I'm going to forget something...If you've been a counselor, how did you pack, and what tips do you have for me? This is my first time being a counselor and I'm super excited! I leave this Sunday :)
Forgot to mention...it's a Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Camp...aka "bible camp." haha

Answer
Pack as you would for going on an extended back packing trip, your not specific as to what the outreach is so pack for that as if your going to a hotel somewhere of course bring your Bible any music ability items Instruments and such also bring a good bible answers resource kids ask the most difficult questions. Bring your fave christian music and videos some camps libraries are so limited that they welcome what you can bring in, no worldly junk though. Look into the camps themes for the summer, costumes novelty items can come in handy for doing a skit. last a stash of your favorite treats, not for you but to reward the camper for doing what they ae supposed to do. It doesn't have to be candy it could be stickers, small toys or a badge or something be creative.

Here is a checklist modify as to your needs but always have your ten essentials

Looking for a University backpack.?

Brofist37

I'm doing IT and I'm after a Laptop Backpack that will fit my Dell XPS 15 (Same dimensions as the Macbook pro 17"). I was looking at Incase but the reviews weren't great, and it seemed a bit lacking in organisation/pocket numbers.

The backpack I'm most likely to get at this point is the Sissgear Ibex.
http://www.swissgear.eu/the-ibex#1

The only issue I have with this product is that is has blue and doesn't look very professional.

I'm after a black backpack that looks professional, this is not the most important aspect though, functionality trumps this every time. I'm looking for a mostly waterproofed backpack to protect my electronics, with a dedicated padded laptop slot along with lots of pockets for organisation, and mesh compartments for notebooks, etc.

Answer
I don't think that "backpack" and "professional" are words that tend to fit well together, but I would suggest looking at Timbuk2 products.

Kid friendly meals while out backpacking?

wannabeout

I'm taking my kids out to the Backcountry for the first time in a couple of weeks. I know all about feeding adults while camping/hiking, I've just never taken kids out in a situation where I can't just open up the cooler and get them food that they like. So I need some easy to prepare backpacking friendly recipies that KIDS will LIKE.

Answer
The classic is mac and cheese. Most kids will eat this. Also by ramen noodles and add anything your imagine takes you to this, even salami, or jerky, dried vetg, mushrooms, etc. Hot cocoa is a must too and goodies like chocolate, marshmallows and a variety of crackers. I also buy instant oatmeal for breakfast and dried fruit. Don't buy too much dehydrated food because of the expense, but first go to your regular market and see what kind of stuff you can buy all ready made in a box. I then throw away the box and put it into ziplocks with cooking instructions slipped inside the bag. I find buying and packing for a backpacking trip is a challenge, but great fun. Kids can come up with great ideas too.

What should we pack for camping with the kids?

Susan

We have always done a lot of camping before the kids and when they were born we made excuses year after year not to take the kids, so we just did not go. Now they are 6 and 4 yo little girls and even though one is a little prissy we think they would enjoy it. We also decided that if they do not think they will like it , they can stay ay grandma's and we still will go. We figure it is time to do things we enjoy and hope they will join in, but if they dont, we still deserve to do it. Everything we do is for our kids, as it should be, but I think we deserve to get back a little something we enjoyed before the girls. Any way, you can give me your thoughts on that but my question was , what can I take to kinda make sure they have a good time. I mean they will have other family members there, when one of us goes we all normally all go(grandpaw, ants, uncles, cousins), and we have a boat with entertubes and skies. But for there age is there something that they can have fun with or to make them feel comfortable and soothing? Please help I want them to have a good time. I also thought about taking there dvd player, maybe some movies will help them winde down when they have had a long day.what do you think?

A good backpacking destination?

lockie G

Im only 14 atm and in year 9. But I wanted to go backpacking or hiking somewhere when I finish school. Where is a good destination? I've never really been a camping person and more of an inside, computer guy but I like sport and enjoy sport and all that. And I think I would enjoy backpacking and/or hiking. So I was wondering what are some good destinations?
My idea is to start of small by doing something in my own country (Australia) Like hicking from point A to B to C to D and then a plane trip back home. Or doing the kokoda trail. What do you guys think?

Answer
Yes, you could explore your country, but its going to be expensive and time consuming as your country is too vast. You could try New Zealand.

Europe's the best as its very varied in everything and geographically too, so you can see much more than you would in Australia.

Well, I could recommend you to come here to Singapore, my Country too:0 Its great and you could backpack to Malaysia and South Thailand. I would suggest Singapore, KL, Hat Yai, and Back:)

who are interested in buying cheap bags at around the price range of singapore dollars within $15~50?

carfreak19

there are some bags, including camping backpack, school bags, travelling luggages and sling bags. school bags are fasionable and stay in the price range of $15~30 per bag

Answer
Firstly this question is a violation for solicitation, secondly it's a bit pointless as you did not say where.lol

What do you think about Child harnesses?

fourcheeks

I saw the child harnesses and I have a six month old and my son runs away from me all the time even when I tell him to stay with me in a firm tone. Should I get a child harness, I have a double stroller and I want my son to walk when we are out to get more exercised.
IT'S NOT A LEASH, IT'S A HARNESS, IT DOESN'T NOT GO AROUND THEIR NECKS, BUT AROUND THEIR ARMS.
My son has just turned two
I just bought an angel alert system that alerts me when my child is out of reach, he wears a transmitter and I wear a receiver

Answer
This is BEST if you are in a situation where a toddler could get lost in a shuffle of people, or run out in a parking lot and get hurt...

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE!

You can ignore the looks, comments, or grief anyone might give you, keep your child safe while he is learning to stick close to Momma. Sounds like you're a great one! Good luck.

Also, a note on the wrist ones, I'd prefer the backpack kind as a jerk on the wrist (any joint) of a small child can cause severe joint injury that is a potential problem the rest of his life! (I taught preschool gymnastics for 5 years!)

What is your opinion on child leashes?

Kyien

When I'm out in public I just want to snap the necks of parents who put this shit on their children. I don't understand why the Government doesn't just ban it. I will never respect any person who puts a dog leash on child. I believe in learning your freedom at a young age and being free at a young age so in the future you don't just follow anyone because your afraid. I believe when children put on leashes grow up they will rebel against their parents and it is justified rebellion. The Government needs to consider anybody who puts their child on a leash unfit to be a parent. What do you think?

Answer
Hand holding: causes an unnatural gait. If the child throws themselves on the ground, parent either lets go of their hand (putting the child in danger) or squeezes the hand tighter and possibly lifts the child by the hand (which can cause what's called Nanny's Elbow, a serious injury.) Also, what happens if mom's hands are full?

Strollers: Don't work for every child, limits exercise, limits ability to explore the world, and does not teach a child to walk with their parent.

Baby gates and baby-proofing an area. Allows a child to explore, play, and learn freedoms in a safe contained area until they are old enough that you can count on them to be safe. Most parents don't hesitate using these tools to allow freedom with safety limitations.

Leashes: Allows a child freedom to walk and explore in a safe limited range. It literally should be seen as a moving baby-gate. Allows them to practice walking with the adults without putting them at risk. These are not dog-leashes, they are more related to "Mother's apron strings" which in the old days women would tie a string to their apron or use their apron string to tie their children to them, usually by the hand, so they could be busy (hanging laundry, working outside, etc) while their toddler/child explored but stayed nearby. (This is where the expression "Time to cut the apron string" comes from.)

I urge you to read the following links and consider that these parents would not have lost their children if they had used a safety-leash, either of the backpack or hand variety. The last link is an uncle who has been charged and convicted by a jury for not keeping his nephew with him in a parking lot, a leash not only would have saved the boy's life but also kept this man from being charged.

Why are Jansport backpacks..?

Dreamer123

In a "trend"
I used them when I was a pee wee kid in elementary school. Now some of my swag f** friends think it's "swag" to roll up to school with a Jansport backpack..
Am I missing something or..

Answer
Some people like Jansport backpacks because the different colors and designs they have. That's why they're so popular. I think your friends are attempting to be cool which kind of makes them look like posers. They just think it's cool because they see a lot of people wearing it. Plus the reason why it's a trend becuase they last for a really long time, it's a pretty decent size, and there are so many to chose from to fit your personality. It's kind of wierd to think that a backpack can make you have "swag".

Hope I helped and sorry if I offended you! :)

Answer
Nobody will give a flying crap what kind of backpack you wear.

College isn't high school.

scary fashion trend you can't beleive you wore?

Q. I had several identity crisises in the 90s during my teens and 20s
first a raver w/ phat pants, a kid's backpack, and lots of beads-then goth in lots of black vinyl, rubber, black hair pale makeup

now I'm pretty boring cause it takes too much effort-though I dress a little too emo/skater for my age-but I look young lol
I forgot those grunge days of the early 90s I was in college and everyone looked (and sometimes smelled) homeless

I had hotpants too! lol-used to look like a go go boy

Do you know how much lead is in your household?

Q. Despite phasing out lead in gas in 1973, removing it from residential house paint in 1978, and outlawing lead-laden paint in chldren's toys, we're still threatened by lead in many consumer products.

Dishware, jewelry, glue stick caps, vinyl backpacks, children's ceramic tea sets -- there are many items with lead content not on any federal recall list your family may be exposed to. The recent toy recalls have pushed the issue back into view, but is the general public paying attention?

Do you know the symptoms? Have you contacted the federal government to press for federally administered, 3rd party safety testing and inspection? Have you ever had your kids tested to see what their levels are?

The December issue of Consumer Reports is a good place to start if you'd like to learn more about this silent threat to our families.
"Rationality Personified," I pray to God you don't have any children in your household. I do when my young grandson is visiting, and the question -- and my concern -- stems from contact in the average household, not power plants.

-Allie Apathetic (not the famous one LOL)

Answer
Ayye, (:
-Well, I also have the 'Scene' hairstyle. I have like, a bagillion layers &
it does get sorta difficult! But don't fret! I can help! For hairspray, I myself
use the Suave 365 Weather Protection (helps against humidity!) But for a STRONG HOLD, I would reccomend using Aussie! They're products really work! & are pretty ahhmazing, btw. And I use
the Bed Head flat iron. Mine is blue, & lights up! I'm not sure where to get that, tho (:
-The CHEAPEST Hello Kitty backpack I have found is this one!:

Also, at this same store, (Hot Topic. -I'm sure you know it. Every 'Scene Kid' does! <3.) you can buy Hello Kitty bags/purses. <-- They are also, fairly big. And
could be used like a backpack as well.
