They stop in St. Louis, Denver, and Las Vegas along the way. During their quest, they battle vicious monsters like Medusa, they find disaster on the observation deck of the Gateway Arch, they are tricked by the god of war (Ares), they nearly lose their memories in an enchanted Vegas casino, and they are almost stretched to death.

Once in the Underworld, Percy finds that Hades does not have Zeus's master bolt, and he is missing his own symbol of power: the helm of darkness. Hades accuses Percy of stealing both the master bolt and the helm of darkness for his father, Poseidon. He accuses Poseidon of being power-hungry. To make things worse, the master bolt magically appears in Percy's backpack while he is talking to Hades.

After escaping Hades's wrath, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover encounter Ares, the god of war, on the Santa Monica beach. Percy questions Ares and discovers that Ares stole the master bolt and helm of darkness from the original thief (whose name we don't yet know). Ares has been tempted by the possibility of sparking one of the biggest wars of all time between the Big Three: Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon. Percy and Ares battle it out on the beach, and Percy wounds Ares, winning the helm of darkness. Ares curses Percy.

Percy returns the helm of darkness to Hades and takes a plane to New York City where he finds Mount Olympus on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building. Percy meets Poseidon and Zeus for the first time and tells them everything that he knows and suspects. He tells them that he believes Kronos, king of the Titans who ruled in the age before the Greek gods, is getting ready to wage war on the Olympians (the Greek gods and goddesses). Percy has been having dreams about Kronos in which Kronos talks to him. Zeus doesn't want to hear it. Poseidon tells Percy that he is proud of him and that he must make a choice when he goes home to his mom's apartment in Queens, NY.

That summer at Camp Half-Blood, Percy has a great time living the life of a hero. He procrastinates making a decision about whether he will stay at Camp Half-Blood year round, or whether he will go home and live with his mom in Queens.

On the last day of camp, Percy is lured into the woods by his friend, Luke. Luke confesses to Percy that he was the original thief of the master bolt and the helm of darkness. He tells Percy that he serves Kronos and that Kronos is planning to defeat the Olympians and get rid of them. Luke vanishes, leaving a deadly scorpion to sting Percy. Percy nearly dies from this scorpion bite, but is rescued by wood nymphs who take him to safety. Percy's teacher, Chiron, nurses him back to health. What is the best solar charger for backpacking trips?

I just got a Goal Zero Nomad 3.5 from REI but im not too sure that im gonna like it. I am going on a 9 day camping trip in North Carolina and will need to keep head lamp, iphone, and GoPro charged. Im not too sure that this little thing can do it. I do want something small and lightweight so its easy to carry on a backpack. Any suggestions?

You just bought the best that money buy. However weather and where you place it will make a difference. I have found that strapping them to the top of my pack I don't have to sit around and wait for my electronics to charge. I use it them to recharge batteries for my camera, GPS and ham radio

what are the rules, and regulations for camping in michigan on hiking trails?

the situation is, there is a 30 mile hiking trail we plan on backpacking the entire trail over the course of 2-3 days. being that it is not private property, but also not state forest area, can we legally camp on the trail with a proper camping permit?

also does anyone know the rules for camp fires in this situation?

What 30 mile trail? there are many. When a trail traverses many districts camping just anywhere can be an issue, ie adjoining private property local ordinances etc. National forests allow dispersed camping and that to some degree allows you to camp almost anywhere the limitations being 200ft away from water etc. State forests are more stringent as well as county parks so a good study of the map will be necessary and calling ahead to find out when and where you can camp.

How can i clean a white backpack like new?

i have a white Burton backpack and its kinda dirty not intensely but just moderately you can see its not super clean or whatever but how can i make it really white again? do i just throw it in the washer & dryer??
or do i have to use shoe cleaner or what??

I went camping for 2 days once and I wanted to take my old pink Jansport.
It was dirty!
I used this Mexican bar of soap called ZOTE.
Its pink.
Then I used some Tide.
Hand washed it first.
Then I threw it in the washer put some tide in there.
It looked NEW!
Trust me!
My mom told me to do it, mom's always know.
If you have any Mexican markets around go there and look for a ZOTE bar.
It comes in a white wrapper thing, but the actual bar is pink.

Where can I get jansport or jansport like backpacks cheap?

I'm looking for jansport superbreak backpacks or backpacks that look like jansport superbreak ones.

The plain ones with one other compartment. Can't be online either unless cheap.

How can I get into hiking/backpacking/camping?

I'm interested in taking up hiking/backpacking/camping through parks and the woods, especially in Northern Maine. Does anyone have any ideas of how to get started? Small goals? What would I need as far as equipment?

Well, I started doing some camping with my father at a young age. I joined the scouts and things went from there. I would suggest something along those lines - find a local club or group that enjoys doing camping and backpacking. You'll want to try camping first - backpacking is an acquired taste if you know what I mean. As far as hiking goes, go to an EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) or REI or LL Bean, and purchase a good pair of hiking boots and a good day pack(it doesn't have to be huge). Ask one of the sales associates to help you find the proper fit. Remember to break in your boots before hiking in them. Also get 2 Nalgene bottles - they're great. Get a guide book - it will have loads of helpful info. Try a few short hikes in the area and work your way up. After awhile try some 4000 footers. Camping and backpacking require a lot more equipment and a bit more experience. Always camp with at least one other person - and see if you can start out by borrowing some gear. Don't buy much until you're sure you want to get into the sport.

If you paid that much for shirts maybe you should rethink your lifestyle. I only get $100 for back to school clothes, supplies, a backpack, and whatever else. I am a girl and I have 2 other sisters who also need clothes. You need to check out other places, you can get the same things for cheaper at other stores. Did you try looking online. Go to places like walmart if you have to. If I spent that much I would be out of cash already. Good luck but maybe you should rethink how many other kids have it worse than you and me. How many poeple wont get clothes. I need clothes too and I AM A GIRL WITH HARDLY ANY! You get way more cash than me so just be happy. If you need to ask for a little more try asking. If you need alot more try selling stuff that needs to go on craigslist. Good Luck

However the most important thing is to put together a decent outfit, I've seen some dorky lookin' kids in cool brands. Never tuck in your shirt unless your school requires it and try to walk up-right not hunched over and never under any circumstances get a rolling backpack. With the outfits try a t-shirt and shorts or jeans and do the same with polos and button-up shirts. Hope this helps!!

Okay so , I want to start off by saying im asking this not to show off, or sound great or whatever. I'm asking because alot of people tell me I am. I'm starting to think maybe I am.. But i'll let you decide..

Okay, I own:
About 31 shirts, maybe 5 or 6 are brand name? (quiksilver, West 49, Billabong, DC etc.) 3 are band shirts and once is an amp energy.

7 pares of jeans, I only buy jeans from warehouse 1 or west 49. 3 pajama pants non brand name. 7 pares of shorts 3 are brand name.

I own 22 hoodies. About 15 are brand name. (West 49, Ripzone, Volcom, etc.)

I own 7 belts all are not brand name.

I have an iphone 4 and two cases. (A blue ifrogz one and a blueberry jelly belly one.)

My mom buys me new hair stuff and whitening products for my teeth alot. I have, Crest 3d white toothpaste, scope whitening mouthwash , Rembrandt 2 hour kit. I have pantene shampoo for me only but i also have Rusk shampoo, conditioner and leave it conditioner. I have ALOT of other hair, face and all those products but im lazy and dont feel like naming it all.

It depends but I see that people from China will buy dozens of vitamins supplements, electronic stuff from GPS navigation system to cell phones, hardware and software etc But in general, people outside USA, will buy chocolate, cookies, preserves like jams, baby stuff from strollers to baby clothes, baby playstuff, children toys (not made in china though) tennis shoes, jeans, designers t-shirts,backpacks for teenagers, designers handbags, cosmetics from lotion to wrinkle/aging products for wife and briefs, boxer shorts, odor free socks, etc for husbands. One or two older relatives may want doritos, sun chips , mixed nuts etc. I know because whenever I go back, these are some of the stuff in my shopping list.

How to become scene/hipster? but still colorful?

...'scene' and 'hipster' people are usually colorful....and there's no way to describe them, they both are really generic, the only description i can say is the stereotypical stuff.
Hipster:
Clothing: Go to stores like American Apparel, H&M, ASOS, CobraSnake, and Urban Outfitters. They are made for hipsters. Wear scarves and fedoras. Most importantly, keep it simple. DON'T! buy labeled gear from the stores run by the label itself, like how Abercrombie has Abercrombie on their shirts. Wear glasses, like shuttershades, oversized plastic framed glasses, Buddy Holly glasses, nerd glasses, and for the ones who can afford it, authentic Ray Ban Wayfarers of all the colors of the rainbow. For shirts, try to get ironic tees, plaid shirts, cowboy shirts, and anything in gingham, plaid, checkers, paisley, and vintage florals. Also, wear vintage shoes. They look awesome.
Accessories:
Some cool stuff are large flower headbands, neon nail polish, pins, bright belts, bird necklaces, patterned and colorful leggings, etc. Ironic accessories are MANDATORY! And don't forget your plugs, piercings, and random scars.
Essentials include a courier bag (not a backpack), preferably something from Freitag, that can fit your MacBook, iPhone, and vinyl LPs (never CDs) of your current favorite band.
Layering or wearing things that don't match together is very hipster. It's that "I can't be bothered" look that actually takes some planning until you get into the habit.
Dresses are good for women, preferably floral or lace, and vintage. Granny's closet is definitely a good source; you should know how to sew and restyle vintage clothing to fit though.
Remember that a hipster's outfit never needs adjustment should you decide to go to the beachâkeep all of your urban accompaniments for the sand and surf to ironically stick out of your element.
HAIR:
The "bed look", long unkempt hair, and hair that resists any attempts to stay flat without chemicals are acceptable looks. Blurring gender lines with haircuts and styles is part of the hipster culture.

SCENE!
Be aware that by becoming scene, you aren't going to be any more unique than the other kids at your school.
CLOTHES: It's important to start with the basic pants for anyone, scene or not. Jeans. Skinny jeans are an absolute must among the scene crowd. You can do plain jeans, bright neon colors or animal print.
SHOES: Try a pair of shoes like ballet flats, converses, or vans for starters. Even a unique pair of shoes from Hot Topic can qualify within the scene wardrobe.
TEES: Graphic tees are very much needed in the scene crowd. Try stores and sites like bbycks, dropdead, and hot topic for your basic graphic and band tees.
HOODIES: Hoodies are also good for putting over a graphic tee. Start out with something in a basic color, like black, which can match with everyone you wear. You can also try a jacket in neon, zebra, or cheetah print.
ACCESSORIES: Accessorize small for a start. A good belt whether it is studded or just something with a cool design on it doesn't matter, as long as you wear it over your shirt, not on the loop through your jeans. Get some bobby pins and barrettes as they seem to be the cheapest. Having one good bow or one good headband is neccessary, but only choose one to start. get as many rubber bracelets as you can, as these tend to be pretty cheap. Have one or two necklaces with guns, brass knuckles, peace signs, diamonds, skulls or cupcakes. A cute chunky ring is nice too. Hello Kitty is very scene also. Claires, despite its girly reputation, has very nice scene accessories.And remember: you don't always need to go to big brand stores. Try small, second hand stores, like Value Village, Plato's closet, And Ross. They have cute things, you just have to dig.
MAKEUP/HAIR: You can always get your hair done at the salon with choppy layers and crazy colors and all, but maybe tone it down a bit. Get your hair dyed one simple color and get a fringe. Blonde, brown, black or red are always a good start. Buy some colored extensions or just get some simple streaks. As for makeup, have good black liquid eyeliner. it is good to have an angled brush for this, instead of using the wand thing that comes with it. Black eyeshadow and a two neon colors. Also have white. Have a foundation that matches your skin tone and some blush that highlights your cheeks a bit. Bright lipstick is good and totally original, as not many scene kids wear makeup on their lips. Mascara, too. Or if your school is strict about amount of makeup you could only use black eyeliner and mascara. And some scene girls wear coloured eyeliner over black eyeliner.
BAG: Get a bag, whether it is a tote bag or a backpack. make sure it is cute and original. You can take sharpies and draw on it, have your friends sign it, and even add a few buttons and safety pins to it for that unique loo

What is a good wrap or sling I can use to take my baby camping?

He is due next month and I want to take a camping trips with him a soon as possible. We usually do backpack camping so a sling or wrap is ideal for the lightweight fabric. I live and camp in Texas so something that won't make him overheat is needed. While there won't be any real climbing, a stroller would not be useful for our favorite places.

Big Bend National Park, Texas. I went there during the 3rd week of January this year. Temps were generally in the 50's during the day, high 30s at night in the Chisos Mountains. It could snow, but it's not likely to be anything that would hinder your hike. You will need to carry lots of water for this hike. The trail is pretty easy to follow here. *laughs* I went through this when I went to college. I decided that backpacks weren't the thing for a university girl and ditched the back pack and went for a book bag.

Just one thing and I am not sure how your new school will be but make sure you get a locker or have a locker that you're sharing with otherwise those books can be a pain to carry and tote around. My old high school was so picky about giving out lockers it wasn't even funny. I couldn't even get a locker. So I ended up with one of those backpacks with wheels so I ended up wheeling my books around, much easier than wearing those books on your back and those books are heavy.

Princess birthday party ideas for a 3 year old?

My daughter has already told her friends that she is having a princess party for her birthday. Does anyone have any unique ideas to put a new spin on it? I don't want to hire a character because her best friend just had Cinderella. Please help! I need ideas!

I had so much fun with my 3 year olds birthday party last month. We did the Dora theme... but you can do the same for a princess party.

I made personalized coloring books with my daughter's picture on front and each child's name. The second page has Dora songs and then I found coloring pages from the Internet and added approximately 10 pages to color and ended the coloring book with Dora's final song. I spiral bound the coloring book.

I ordered personalized candy and bubble wrappers from http://stores.ebay.com/CandyWrapperCottage and they came out so cute!

Dora music played in the background the entire time. I bought a lot of arts and crafts for the children to make, with the help of the adults, little backpacks and I added the map that I had already constructed for each child to their backpack. We rented a Dora spacewalk, which was out of their view and the map guided them in the direction of the spacewalk.

I had a three-tier cake made which was absolutely gorgeous. Oddly enough, Walmart made the cake and they did one heck of a job. It was basically a wedding cake but they created a Dora cake from it and like I said, it turned out beautiful. The cake was approximately 130 dollars.

The kids really enjoy the party, it has been almost a month, and we still have parents calling saying what a great time it was and asking me for ideas.

Maybe you could do something like this, but obviously with the princess theme and instead of a map from Dora, have a scroll with their mission. You can get arts and crafts making little tiaras for the girls and crowns for the boys.

How do you save money on things you need for your kids? How do you save money on household things and groceries?

Clothing for kids doesn't have to be high-dollar. I often shop consignment stores and yard sales. You can find name-brand clothes, barely worn (sometimes with tags still on) for a fraction of the retail price. Hand-me-downs aren't a bad thing! If you're passing boy clothes to a girl, you can add ruffles and ribbons to make them "girlier." Also, at the end of each clothing season, I shop the clearance racks for the next year.

For groceries, remember that it's often cheaper to buy generic than it is to buy name-brand with a coupon, and the generics are usually manufactured by the name-brand companies. If your grocery allows double coupons, take advantage of it, but only the the things you would normally have on your list anyway. Buy in bulk whenever possible. Avoid pre-portioned snacks, as they are far more expensive. You can put snacks in cheap baggies instead.

When it's time for school supplies, avoid the trendy notebooks and pencils. Instead, buy the less expensive plain ones and let your children decorate them however they choose. This can be a great back-to-school tradition for your family. You can purchase personalized pencils very cheaply through places like Oriental Trading Company. With backpacks, you're better off to make the initial investment for a good quality pack. I had one that lasted more than 8 years - through high school and out of college.

If your children are smaller, things like diapers can be terribly expensive. I've found that store brands work as well as name brands. This is true for most baby and toddler supplies, from wipes to bottles to shampoo.

Toys don't have to be fancy, either. You can make your own playdough and fingerpaints, and kids love it! Go to the library and enroll in summer reading programs for your child. Spend time outdoors and take advantage of public parks.

What is a typical day of backpacking like?

For my outdoor education class, I need to know basic facts about a day of backpacking. How far did you go in one day? How long did you sleep? When did you cook? That sort of thing. Thanks!

As others have mentioned how far you go in a day depends on the group, the terrain and the amount of gear you are carrying. In my experience, unless it is a very good trail over even ground, anything over 8 miles is a pretty good distance in day and anything over 15 is really pushing it. Heck, 20 miles in one day is a pretty hard day hike without a pack (basically a fast walking pace non-stop for 10 straight hours).

Typically, I aim for 6 to 12 miles a day depending on the area. Presumably you are hiking through a pretty and enjoyable place and will want to stop along the way to take pictures and enjoy it rather than troop through at full speed without stopping. Outdoor exercise experts also recommend that you stop at least once every 1-2 hours and elevate your feet for 10-15 minutes to improve circulation and clear out lactic acids that build up in the legs and feet.

A typical day goes as follows:
Get up around sunrise. Breakfast, bathroom activities and repacking at a relaxed pace usually takes about an hour and a half.

Hit the trail for about 3-4 hours, with maybe one 15 minute break along the way. Find a nice spot for lunch and just hang out and relax a bit for an hour or more. Hit the trail again for 3-4 hours, with at least one 15 minute break.

I try to reach camp a good two hours before sunset to allow plenty of time to check out the area and setup (plus it is nice to be done with everything and relax during sunset). Finding the nearest water source and filtering enough water (hand-pump filter) to last to the next camp is a high priority.

If fires are allowed at the camp, than gathering firewood is a top priority while there is day light, but I usually won't start the fire until I need it for light or cooking. I like to do my cooking right after enjoying the sunset (or the days are long, cook right before sunset and find a good sunset spot to eat at). In the last few years, I have become a fan of the dehydrated meals (Mountain House, etc) which are light, calorie packed and not bad tasting. I don't need to bring pots, separated ingredients, etc and can eat right out of the package. The new JetBoils are great for quickly boiling water with minimum weight and fuel.

I am normally a night owl, but after a day or two of backpacking I usually get into a natural rytheme with the daylight and find myself happily going to bed and waking up earlier than I would at home. Hitting the tent by 9PM and sleeping a good 8-9 hours is not uncommon.

The above is pretty typical, but no two days are exactly the same. Some days you don't to camp until after dark and others you may only go an easy 4 or 5 miles between camps. For extended trips (over 4-5 days) I often like to find a nice spot to hold over 2 nights (a dead day) to really relax and explore a bit without having to constantly get up and go each morning.

Where you are going makes a big difference too. I do most of my backpacking in the southwest where water sources are few and far between and so you often have to carry more water (heavy!) on you than at other places. On the other hand, we have much fewer mosquitos, fleas, and ticks so I usually never have to bother with bug spray.

What is a good "ideal" weight for fully loaded backpack when backpack camping?

I am 5'7" and about 160 pounds. My current bag setup weighs about 35 pounds fully loaded (includes food, tent, sleeping bag etc.). Is this a reasonable weight for backpacking?

Light is great as long as you bring what you need. You have very good weight, it really depends on the person, the average all around weight for myself has been between 72 and 75 lbs but I'm comfortable with it.

The world is your oyster my friend (already cracked). You can go anywhere for as long as your Visa card will hold up.Just make sure you have enough food, to last until, you get to the next shop.

Very hassle free way of getting around. You can cover a lot more ground than you can hiking. You don't need to arrange transport. you just go. Bike speed is the best way to see anywhere.

If your going through towns and cities it is still a good idea to stay at the hostels.(crime and violence). Once your out of town just find a quiet spot around sunset throw your swag out. Get up just on sunrise and nobody will know you were there.

There is safety in numbers, so try to drag a few mates along with you.

Nicer than backpacking. You don't have to put up with the seedy elements in the hostels. You really feel free. The money lasts longer.

Flask: In need of the best and warmest.?

Hey, I'm in need of a heat retaining flask, but not just any flask. The absolute warmest flask to keep hot liquids warm for 24h or more. Price doesn't matter. I've heard about the Aladdin Stanley bolt flask and the Aladdin challenger flask but some reviews say they have dropped heat retention over just a year...... I intend using this Flask for mountaineering, a few years perhaps the Himalayas so I will use it in conjunction with the Outdoor Research Flask Parka. If you have experience with the best and warmest heat retaining flask or know about, then please share. Thank you.

Easy to moderate hikes the provide parking and camping in South Lake Tahoe?

Im planning to go to South Lake Tahoe next summer. are theres any hikes that are beautiful in scenery, provide parking, and allow camping or even on the move camping, about a two to three day hike in a easy to moderate range.? I would like to stay close to the lake, or be able to see the scenery of the lake/ lakes. i would appreciate some help with sites and even maps. thanks in advance

Desolation Wilderness runs along the west side of Lake Tahoe in California, SR 89, and is ideal for a backpacking and day hiking. There are several trailheads that provide access to the wilderness area and have ample parking. Summiting any of the peaks in the wilderness will provide incredible views of Lake Tahoe and surrounds.

There are many regulations and requirements for backpacking in Desolation Wilderness. A permit is required and there are daily limits to the number of backpackers on each trail. Bears are a nuisance and approved bear canisters must be carried. Backpacking by itself requires special gear and knowledge. You might want to read up on the subject and renting your gear is always advisable for a beginner.

If you want to camp near the lake D.L. Bliss State Park is the ideal choice located near the popular Emerald Bay and Eagle Falls Trailhead into Desolation Wilderness. Reservations might be necessary for the summer. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=505

One year wedding anniversary ideas in Bay Area, Ca?

My husband and I will be celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary this coming July. We live in the Bay Area, Ca.

Does anyone have any good suggestions or unique ideas for things we could do or places we could go? He's a Cali native; I've lived here for 3 1/2 years.
I don't want the usual "Go out to dinner" or "Go to the movies" or "Go out to a club". I am looking for something that is very memorable and special.

Costanoa cabins are pretty and romantic and just a short walk to the beach, with a spa and hiking and a great restaurant. And right near there is Pigeon Point Lighthouse and the sea lion beach (forgot the name). If you're active, there's a awesome place to backpack in Big Sur called Sykes Hot Springs. Camping at Lake Del Valle is always nice. They have everything there biking, hiking, sun. Hope I helped.
