How does high school work with the whole lockers and backpacks thing?

So is it like you can't bring ur backpack to class? Or you bring ur backpack to ur locker and then bring like only the things you need for the class in a small tote? Or just have the the class necessities in ur hands? Do they even bring backpacks, is everything in ur locker and then you take out what you need for the next class?

SORRY, im gonna b a freshman next year and I know its way early but im curious but its quite confusing...

Answer
Most highschools don't have lockers anymore. However, this is how it works. You have a backpack with all the stuff you need like you do in middle school. However, in highschool, they have many more books and text books and such. You can store things you don't want to carry around all day in the locker and go pick it up before class. you never leave your backpack in there

What backpacks are good for my sister? She's going to ride her bike to school?

Darkness G

My sister is going to be a freshman this year and she's going to ride her bike to and from school. What are some good backpacks for her? What's a good way for her to keep the backpack off her back until she gets to school? She wants them to look good to. She wears pink sometimes and mainly wears blue. She has some black, and wears skinny jeans a lot too. Please help?

Answer
Forget backpacks if there's any weight involved at all. Add a rear rack & panniers to the bicycle. Axiom makes a nice pannier set that can be easily put on & taken off the bike. They also sell great rear racks. Links below. Find 'em at your local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Jeans are made of cotton & trap in perspiration - sweat - causing chafing. Tight jeans make it worse.

Just needed a little information about what would be needed to survive when traveling the country on foot, i live in Sullivan missouri & am planning on going wherever the wind takes me to find true freedom & spiritual enlightenment, any & all information would be greatly appriciated. (:

Answer
Dear Lollipop Natalie,

What an interesting question and plan.

First of all I will tell you that you do not need to walk anywhere to find true freedom and spiritual Enlightenment. That you can find right where you are sitting or standing and reading this response. I can tell you this from experience. I will post a link below where you can read about finding and living Enlightenment.

Second, your journey by foot is quite an interesting adventure. Realistically I would say you will need some good traveling clothes, really good boots, good socks, a smart phone with a good gps and map program on it, good backpack, camping gear, a sufficient amount of money for necessities in your bank account, an ATM card to access that money. I would also suggest that you study a martial art like Akido or Kung Fu and get extremely good at it before heading out. You will need to know how to protect yourself physically just in case.

Be safe and write about the journey on a blog for everyone to see.

Take care.

Backpack Hiking Advice!?

Hey

I am a teen girl, and I love to Hike! I am not too extreme at all...I mostly backpack. I have hiked the grand canyon rim to rim, in Glacier national Park. (just for some backround!) I usually backpack 10-15 miles per day. I have an opportunity to plan a trip for me and my mom to take, and I would like it to be 3-5 days long. Any Suggestions anywhere in North America? (prefrerably south because i have not hiked there recently!) THANKYOU!

Answer
You can ask for more ideas under the "Camping" category, since there is no backpacking category on Yahoo! Answers.

Backpacking ten to twenty miles a day in the mountains is very good. You are more experienced than many hikers. I usually do the same each week in Colorado on my days off work.

One of my favorite areas that falls within your requirements is the Holy Cross Wilderness Area. Other interesting adventures include a hike through the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. A challenging adventure of mine during the past summer was climbing Windom Peak, a Fourteener, which involves taking a narrow-guage train out of Durango for a few hours, getting off at a flag stop, hiking a few hours up to Chicago Basin, camping a few nights, and attempting to summit Windom, Eolus, and (if you are very extreme) Sunshine. Another great overnight involves hiking up Harvard and Columbia or sleeping over at the base of Missouri, Oxford, and Belford.

I'm a freshman and at the high school I'm going to none of the girls use backpacks, they use big shoulder bags and stuff. I want to fit in so I need to know where I can buy a nice, durable shoulder bag for cheap in BC Canada. Any suggestions?

Answer
I'm not sure where in BC but here in the US you can get them from Hollister Co, American Eagle, Areopostal. you can also check out your local store like Walmart, Target and we have a store here Kohls that is pretty good for getting that type of bag. When I was in high school we changes bags every few months.

Anyone know where I can get an all leather Jansport backpack?

I saw a girl with one a year ago and it looks so cute! I think it would be perfect for going back to school in.

Answer
try luggage stores or try their website, also try walmart or target or even office max

Answer
I think its sad because most of the time you can tell they are unfit parents who cant control their children

Why are so many people against the backpack leashes?

Ronica

I hear so many people say - "my kid isn't a dog"
So.... you love your dog more? You will take precautionary measures not to lose your dog, but not your child?
Young children will not listen to you every time. There are going to be times a child just takes off just because they are full of energy, or asserting their individuality - as experts put it.
I'd rather be safe than have a hurt or lost kid on my hands.

Answer
I was one of those people that said Leashes are for dogs, Not children. I have two kids and my son never ran around, When we were somewhere he was holding my hand or in a stroller. But now that i have a 2 year old girl she thinks running in the street is ok. She sees the neighbor kids doing it. Well we are planning a trip to sea world/ and six flags over Texas. And you can't keep them in the stroller the whole time. So for her safety and peace of mind we will be getting one of them.

What kind of DSLR backpack should I buy?

I am travelling to Beijing in July for 6 days.

I want to take my Nikon DSLR 40, but I am leery of carrying it around the city. I thought of using a backpack, but I need it to be more than just a camera bag. I am not planning to carry much equipment (perhaps just two lenses and a cleaning cloth), but I need to personal items as well.

Any suggestions on a good, relatively inexpensive bag?

Answer
Lots of detailed reviews at this page..

http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Camera-Bag-and-Lens-Case-Reviews.aspx

I'm going to recommend a Lowepro Vertex 200..
http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Lowepro-Vertex-200-AW-Camera-Backpack-Review.aspx

It's not going to break the bank, it's very high quality, will carry all you need, and will provide you with more than enough room should you wish to expand your photo equipment in the future.

Your best bet is to go into a camera store and handle and examine all the bags properly, rather than view them online.

Does an old backpacking water filter need to be replaced?

pamv

I have an old Scout backpacking water filter that has sat on a shelf in our basement for 20 years. It was only used 3 times. Does it need to be replaced or can we start using it again. The ceramic filter can't be replaced bc they don't make that model any more.

Answer
It'll need a clean but it'll be fine after that if it isn't damaged.
To clean it, rinse it off and brush it under the tap with a stiff brush.. If the hole through the middle is small a bottle brush or a toothbrush could be useful
Then put it into bowl of warm water with a few drops of normal household bleach in it for an hour, or even better (But I bet you don't have any....) is to make a solution of one Campden tablet in a pint or two of water and soak the filter in that for an hour.
Camden tablets (or powder) is what wine and beer bottles are sterilized with before filling them, in professional vineyards and in home wine making.
Find them in the supermarket or a health food shop that does all sorts of bits or in a home wine making store or through an internet shop like this
http://www.eckraus.com/PS115.html . . . .
Now it's clean and any bugs living on it are well gone to bye-bye land.. Put the filter in the holder and pump water through it.
Discard the first two or three pints and then empty the filter, wrap it well, and it's ready to go camping.
Some filters have a reverse pumping action for cleaning them out so you pump water through the 'outlet' side and that system is used as well in many of the expensive big filters for industry or large groups of people on campsites and by the Army for it's 500-gallon water bowsers..
.It was one of my jobs as an Army medic to test the water from those and train people how to do it.
Have a look if the instruction book is missing and see what you can do with it.

When the water is filtered it will need sterilizing. Three ways to go or just boil it for at least five minutes.

1...You can use those Campden tablets at one per gallon. You drink it every time you have a glass of wine. It's used to stop fermentation as well as sterilizing the bottles and it breaks down to a pure harmless salt but the water will have a whiff of sulfur, which boils off if you're cooking with it, or making tea or coffee.
It can be easily hidden by adding one Vitamin C tablet per gallon. In wine it's mostly hidden but you'll see some wine reviews which mention a sulfur tang in the wine....not always a bad thing and for cooking wines it doesn't matter at all. The tiny bit of sulfur soon gets boiled off
That method with Campden powder or tablets is done all over the world by trekkers and campers, and by local people who can get the stuff.
Even African villagers do it.....if the traveling water teccie has paid a visit and left some Canpden powder or tablets. I always take some for presents when I visit remote villages and not only in Africa.
I like Africa, seen some.. lots more to see. ...Cry at the bank for me. It'll get back sooner maybe. xx

2...Put five or six drops per gallon of pure bleach in the water instead of the tablet. Mix well.
Not bleach with caustic soda and perfumes and muck added....pure chlorine bleach....sodium hypochlorite with nothing else added.
It releases chlorine, same stuff tap water is sterilized with. It's safe to drink.
The tang of chlorine is very small unless you overdose the stuff...use the vitamin C tablet trick.
It works.

3... Pay through the nose for sterilizing stuff that tastes awful from a camping shop. Again, the good old de-taster magic is done with a vitamin C tablet..
In cold weather leave it for an hour whichever chemical treatment you use before using the water, to let the sterilizer do it's work. In warm weather, 30 minutes.
Have fun.

Where can I find a semi-cute, sturdy backpack for school?

Going back to school for my senior year. Need a new backpack because my High Sierra finally ripped apart after 3 years of AP classes and 2-inch binders lol.

Point is, I would like to find a semi-attractive (needn't be too floral or much paisley) that's cute for a girl and is casual and not too contrived. I like some of the Roxy and other stuff, but they aren't big enough and don't have enough separate compartments for my stuff.

I already looked online and checked my local stores, but they're either soldout or not sturdy enough.

Recommend me any particular websites or link to some backpacks?

Answer
The Northface has amazing sturdy ones. I would check out places like Dick's Sporting Goods and REI. They make backpacks for mountain climbers so I definitely think they will be able to handle your AP books :)

What backpacks do high schoolers usually use?

Jennifer

hi, i'm going to be a freshman this year and i was wondering what kind of backpacks do high schoolers
use? i think most of them either use tote bags or not have one at all.
i have my old mesh bookbag from 8th grade and it is perfectly fine and i want to use it for freshman year. can i use my old mesh bookbag for high school?

Questions are:
1. What backpacks do high schoolers usually use?
2. can i use my old mesh bookbag for high school?

Answer
Yes, an old mesh bookbage is fine. Girls will either use tote bags or some gigantic purse that they have (I use a hobo sometimes). It doesn't matter what you use, as long as it can hold what you need! If you ever plan on buying a new backpack, Jansports are also widely used.

we enjoy the outdoors and camping, we have bought many items during the years and now we have many things, and they get everywhere in the car during the trip. How do you pack kitchen items: paper plates, utensils, paper towel? bed items (they are bulky)? mosquito repellent bottles ( they love me )I usually put kitchen stuff in a plastic container, but to reach the bottom I have to take everything on top. Any creative ideas? tips? I may buy a space saver bag for the bedding, has anybody tried that.

Answer
For car-camping I use a medium-size Rubbermaid Action Packer bin with sheets of plastic (lexan? stuff from Home Depot) cut into 11" tall dividers and duct-taped into place for my kitchen box. There's room in the box for my pots and pans, three propane canisters, plastic plates and bowels, napkins, trash bags and space for most of my dry foods. On the very top I lay my large griddle, cutting board, campfire grate, collapsible sink, axe, folding saw and 1/2 rolls of paper towels. I have a mesh organizer I made myself and screwed to the inside of the bin's lid to hold my cooking and eating utensils.

I can then strap my Coleman stove and el-cheapo propane grill on top of this. When I get to camp, all the stuff on the top of the bin comes out and generally stays out until it's time to pack-up and go, and the stuff underneath is stored vertically instead of flat, so there's no digging for buried items. The lid, with the utensils attached, also comes out and stays on the mesh shelf under my camp kitchen unit (small folding table with grill shelf).

Generally speaking, each person -- child or adult -- is responsible for carrying their own clothing and sleeping kit. All our sleeping bags compress well into their stuff sacks, and we use self-inflating mattresses that also roll-up tight. The sleeping bags go inside each person's duffel bag or backpack on top of their clothing and personal items, and the mattress gets strapped outside to the top or side. Clothing is organized into dry bags to protect from any weather or mishaps, and for organization. We also use one of the drybags full of clothes with a pillow case instead of a pillow. Each person is also responsible for their own toiletries, which go in a small nylon bag stored the outside pocket of the duffel bag or backpack, along with sun block, insect repellent, flashlight or headlight with extra batteries.

If you are using regular bedding you'll find that sleeping bags will take a lot less space and weight, particularly if you use a compression bag (just remember to loosen the compression bag during storage at home so the insulation doesn't go flat). Our bags compress down to about 9x12". As mentioned above, we put a pillow case over our clothing's dry bags to use as a pillow, or you can get inflatable pillows. Also, camp towels or large "Sham Wow" type towels take up much less room than regular household towels but work just as well, and dry more quickly.

The tent, 2 LED lanterns, 2 bag chairs, roll-up table, dining tarp with poles go into one large duffel. This sometimes leaves one or two loose chairs to sling over your shoulder.

If necessary, I can stack the two coolers, Rubbermaid bin, stove and grill onto a folding luggage cart and drag it to the campsite on one trip, then return and strap the water container, large duffel, and camp kitchen to the cart for my second trip.

What is the best sleeping bag for backpacking Europe?

erin.wrong

What type of backpack is best for backpacking in hostels across Europe, Down, synthetic or hybrid? Do I even need one or is a sleeping sheet enough? I'll be traveling in September through England, france, Italy and greece and the temps are around 10-25 degrees.

Thanks!

Answer
Only bring a sleeping bag if you are going to camp.
Most people backpacking use hostels, and most hostels do have beds all made up, with sheets and blankets or duvets and do not allow you to use your sleeping bag.
A sleeping sheet is a good idea, but if you are packing real light, do not bother. I have used my sleeping sheet once in a three week hostel trip.

For your backpack, take as small a pack as you can, you will be walking with your pack more than you would expect and packs do get heavy.
I have learned to travel with a day pack rather than a full size pack and am much happier with it. I still bring things I do not need, but not as much.

Anybody know a private camper area in Erie near Presque isle?

We have a camper 20 footer and would like to take it to Erie near Presque isle. I know there are camping sites with tents and campers jammed side by side with no privacy unless you are inside camper. Does anybody know a nice rental place with some privacy where we can park camper, hook up utilities, access to beach, have campfire, go fishing? Basically have everything right there along with some privacy? Where I live I am around people constantly in Townhouse with little privacy so on vacation I really need opposite and have privacy and down time. (also a nice little rental cottage on the beach is fine also) Thanks.

Answer
What you are describing is what EVERYBODY wants (privacy, beach access, etc.) So of course, nobody can have that since everyone is competing for the same desirable locations and their owners want to maximize their income on renting those spots.

if you want privacy, forget about summer RV camping. Millions of Americans all want to drive to a nice spot and park their campers. For real isolation in a pretty spot you have to be willing to hike on foot away from roads and camp with tents. Or drive hundreds or even thousands of miles to more remote areas far from population zones. Or pay a pretty penny for a truly isolated private cabin.

I have lived and camped in western PA for over 40 years and my boyfriend lives in north Central PA so I know the camping situation in these parts well (we camp with both a travel trailer and with backpacking tents). This is a very populous state.and a popular camping destination. By this time in the year you should be grateful to find ANY campsite that is even available near the lake shore, let alone something ideal. If you can function without hook-ups, you might find a spot in a state or county campground that has some space around you, but no RV park is going to space their services far apart in such a heavily used area.

Need websites that recommend camping spots?

starryeyed

I keep getting sites for camping spots that are covered in concrete and have swimming pools. What is up with that...guess I am looking for something more primitive, a real back to nature experience. Any websites that can refer you to that type of camping spot?

I have been home schooled for like two years now. And this year Iâm planning on going back. Starting high school. I was just wondering what kind of stuff is cool/in for high school. Clothes, brands and pretty much everything. I would help me lots if someone could give me a list of cool/in clothes and stuff. (fyi Iâm not trying to be the coolest girl in school) but I would still like to know. Thanks :) :)

Answer
for tops, go to forever 21 (my personal favorite), h&m, american eagle, pacsun, abercrombie/hollister (not graphic tees though;P like, dont just get plain boring shirts that say 'hollister' on the front), urban outfitters (a little more expensive, but check out clearance), charlotte russe, victorias secret PINK, etc;)
jeans & shorts, i pretty much would say go american eagle or hollister/abercrombie:) or pacsun (the brand is bullhead)?
skirts/dresses, its gotta be forever 21 allll the way;) that store is AMAAZING:) [and cheap] but, also look at h&m, charlotte russe, urban outfitters, american eagle... cheahh:)
also, american eagle has fantasticc shoes:) but realllly, you can get shoes anywhere, like famous footwear & stuff;) & old navy flipflops:D
get a tote bag FOR SURE, not a backpack:) you can get them pretty much at annyyy store above, or just get a cute, unique one at any store or online;) [[heres an example of a more unique one, its the one im probably getting;)-http://www.ellavickers.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=238) (targets got some nice ones too, loll)
i think thats about it:) dont worrry, high school is great & im sure you'll enjoy it no matter what you wear:) have fun!

What should I use to carry my stuff in high school?

Taylor

Im starting high school next year and I dont know what to use to carry my stuff. A lot of girls are using totes and purses and stuff, but it doesn't seem practical, but I also dont want to seem like a nerd or whatever, so should I get a tote? Or just a plain jansport backpack? Or maybe a messenger bag? Im going to be getting a big binder, a few notebooks, a pencil bag, and a small makeup bag, so what would be the best to carry that stuff?

Answer
Get a large purse, or if you plan on carrying a lot of books with you just get a Jansport- those were trendy when I was a freshman in highschool. I usually bring a small purse and carry my binder, but I am a senior and have less classes... I would just get a larger purse/tote like some of Hollister's are cute and durable..

I am really interested in getting into camping and hiking. I'm very athletic so I enjoy the challange and hiking. I just dont know what size backpack I would need for my gear for like a 3 day camping trip. And also, if I wanted to just hike on local trails are daypacks good? What are they for really?

Answer
REI is an excellent resource for beginners looking to get into Backpacking they have expert advice, check lists for what you need and tons of gear for sale at all levels of pricing.

http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/camping

For a good backpack to handle a 3 day trip it is going to be bigger then a day pack you would use on a simple all day hike 7000ci vs 1500ci. and then there is internal frames vs external frames. All personal choices. REI has a rental program where you can try before you buy and they will assist you in fitting for just the right size pack for your needs.

local hikes are the best place to start you want to be familiar as much as possible with where you go so you can be as prepared as possible in my area this is a good link for hikes

How much would it cost to go backpackimg through Europe?

Nashaya

When I turn 18 I would like to go backpacking through europe. I would like to know the cost of airfaire, food, hotels etc. My trip would consist of going to France, Italy, Romamia, Greece, and also the United kingdom and Ireland. I would be coming from Utah in the United States and I speak French baisicaly fluently and I know the basics Italian. I have two years until I turn 18 so I have plenty of time to save money.
Please help!

Answer
People who backpack around Europe generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget. However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel. Prices really depend on exactly where you come from, when you visit, how you get around and what you see/do/eat.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point. Tuscany is an entire region, not a town. The most convenient airports to fly into will be Pisa or Florence, but Rome or Bologna are also reasonable options.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you. Palermo is a long trip by train, Naples to Palermo is one leg of the trip where you might consider flying.

http://www.seat61.com/ . This includes a huge amount of information on train travel throughout Europe - much more than there is room for in an answer here. The site has links to the various national train websites where you can find schedules and prices for trains. It also includes detailed descriptions of railpasses. This will tell you how to determine whether a railpass is worth the money for your trip (in Italy where I live railpasses are almost never worth the cost), which railpass to get, and how to use the railpass. There's also information on what to avoid in particular places.

Driving can be expensive; fuel prices, tolls and parking all add up, but it can become cost effective for groups. You can check sites like Avis, Europcar, Sixt, etc, for your specific rental cost. Picking up in one country and dropping off in another can be very expensive. You can get driving distances and estimates fuel and toll costs on viamichelin: http://www.viamichelin.com/ .
.
http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Shopping depends entirely on you.

Will it be worth it to take my tent through Europe?

backpack camping gear guide

backpack camping gear guide image

rusted_gut

I am planning to travel Europe mainly by bicycle alone. Probably Greece-italy-Slovenia-Austria-Germany-
Will it actually save money to bring my tent with? Or should I rather leave the hassle of the tent and sleep in hostels. What will be the cheapest?
I have a feeling it may be cheaper to go by hostels, because i have to pay for my tent site, and not for one person as I would have at a hostel. Or maybe I am wrong... could camping be cheaper?

Answer
Get your backpack packed-
The most important item you will need for your backpacking tour of Europe is, of course, the backpack. Suitcases are bulky and hard to lug around everywhere. Plus, your looking to save money and backpacking is the way to do it. So, on the to backpack itself. This piece of gear will be your best friend on your trip and you need to make sure you get the bag that is right for your body and needs. Most major sporting goods stores will carry backpacks and have a very well informed staff that can fit a back to you that will fit your needs perfectly. Don't settle on this step. If you have to try on twenty backpacks until you find the one that offers the most comfort then so be it. These stores should also have weight bags they can place inside of your backpack so that you can know how they will feel with a heavy load in them. Again, do NOT settle on this step, you will regret it later.

Housing-
So you've bought your backpack. Pat yourself on the back because you are now on your way! The next item you will want to pick up is a lightweight tent. Camping is by a mile the cheapest way to travel through Europe.

Touch down-
So you've made it to Europe! Yay! Time to take out that guide book and find a place to stay, get set up and hit the town! Have fun!

Check out the tips below for more ideas on getting the most out of your trip without breaking the bank! At: http://www.hotels2stay.net/world/europe/index.html

Hope my answer will help you in your way!!! :-)

How can I find a good sleeping bag?

startledst

I usually go to the Grand Canyon in April. I borrow a sleeping bag every year, but I'm thinking about buying one now. Any suggestions?

Answer
There is a big difference between backpacking sleeping bags and general purpose 'car camping' bags, so you will want to go with a store and brand that specializes in backpacking.

Aside from comfort and warmth, as a backpacker you will want to consider weight, how small it compresses and how water resistant it is. The big divide right now is between synthetic and down bags. Synthetic bags are generally cheaper and will keep you warm even when wet. Down bags are warmer and compress better, but usually cost more and need to be kept dry (today most come with water-resistant outer shells which work to varying degrees).

Whatever bag you get, my experience is that the bag rating (the temperature to which it is effective) is generally a bit on the optomistic side and I would give yourself an extra 5-10 degrees to be safe (ie: if the coldest temp you expect while camping is 35 degrees, I would get a bag rated to 25 degrees).

I am currently using a Marmot Helium which I highly recommend - it is rated to 15 degrees, compresses smaller than a loaf of bread and weighs less than 2 pounds. It is one of the best backpacking bags out there, but also one of the most expensive at $300+.

For many years, I used a Sierra 'Wild Bill' synthetic bag ('Rosa' is the female model) which was quite comfortable and useable and cost about $100. Other good and well respected brands to consider are REI, Big Agnes and Mountain Hardware.

See the websites below and even go to a store and try a few to see how they fill. I would recommend going to a store that is dedicated to backpacking and hiking as opposed to general recreation or hunting and fishing (which will probably have more heavy bags). REI is a great place to go and their people can give you good advice as well (many are avid backpackers). REI stores are located in most large western cities (there are two in the Phoenix area).

A few other notes... you will probably want to get some sort of air mattress. Therma-rest makes some pretty comfy pads specifically for backpacking that pack down pretty light and tight. You can also buy a little cloth sling for them which turn them into a comfortable seat (with back support) for sitting around camp. Note too that Backpacker magazine typically comes out with their big yearly gear guide in early spring and will have some good recommendations too.

Mommy of 4

Yesterday,I took my boys school shopping to the mall,I spent 30$ On my 13 year old,( Boy) And 20$ On my 11 year old.( Boy also),My 11 year old thinks i am Spoiling My 13 year old because i Spent 10 dollars more on him.My 13 year old Got A New York Yankee BackPack,10 dollars,A Blue Derek Jeter shirt:10 dollars,And a pair of Cargo Navy Blue Jean Shorts,10 dollars also.My 11 year old got A Giant's backpack ( The football team)10 dollars With A Shockey Jersey,10 dollars ( It was on sale) ,I did not get him shorts because he Already had a pair that i bought last week,That he wanted to wear,Then in the middle of the store he threw himself on the floor,And kicking my 13 yr old in the shin,He is Previously Grounded 3 wks already,I am adding 2 more weeks to that,I dont know what to do with him,I do NOT hit,Even if that is the right thing to do.I need to figure another punishment,He already has no phone,t.v or computer,no friends for what he did last night on the phone.
Mary J,I shop at Steve & Barry's.They have WWE shirts,My son's love WWE so i get them undertaker & John cena shirts!!

Answer
Tell your kids that fairness means everybody in your family gets what they need, and that they need different things at different times. Good for you for not hitting; it's not the right thing to do. Of course, stay firm with your punishments, but next time consider smaller ones, so you don't give up all your leverage on one or two infractions. Sounds like your son is already overloaded with punishments but is still acting out, so you need a different approach.

Talk to his teachers and to the parents of the kids he hangs out with a lot to see if there's a bigger problem or if he's just misbehaving with you. Sit down and talk to him about what he thinks the trouble is. An 11-year-old throwing himself on the floor over $10 sounds like a cry for attention or at least a signal that something's gone awry with him. Is anything going on with him that could explain that kind of behavior? Try giving him as much of your attention as possible for awhile so you can connect with him and figure out what's going on. Good luck.

lockers in new york city?

Q. i'm travelin to nyc for a day to see a redsox yanks game and then going to the airport. i will have a bookbag and need a place to store it, because yankee stadium doesn't accept bags. anywhere to store it in nyc? like a subway if it has lockers, thanks

Answer
Plan your trip well - good thing you are asking the question now.
I don't even know if there is a bus terminal on your way, but you might try and see if they have lockers. The airport lockers are past security and you would need a ticket to get to them.

And don't have a kid named Tony outside the stadium keep it for you until after the game.....

Stadium guidelines:

No backpacks, briefcases, attaché cases, coolers, glass or plastic bottles, cans, large purses, bags or video cameras will be permitted into the ballpark. You must leave these items in your vehicle before entering the ballpark.
No laptops are permitted into the stadium.
No items will be claim checked. You will be asked to return them to your vehicle.
Diaper bags, small children's backpacks, small women's purses & backpack purses will be permitted into the ballpark, but will be inspected at the entrance gates.
Re-entry will not be permitted. Once you enter the ballpark, you will not be permitted to leave and re-enter the facility. Please make sure you have everything you need with you before entering the ballpark.
Only vehicles dropping off or picking up disabled guests will be permitted curbside at the ballpark. No other vehicles are permitted curbside, nor will people be able to stand and wait with their vehicles.
Smoking is prohibited throughout the entire stadium. (that's why half the crowd is pissed off and booing A-Rod by the 7th inning..)

As Socrates argues for censorship he describes form and content. What is this distinction?

kids backpack zoo
on zoo pack dog backpack by skip hop zoo packs little
kids backpack zoo image

linda Maga

What is the distinction? I'm confused on his discription. Can this be interpreted in contemporary terms of culture?

Answer
Don't you own a dictionary? Rhetorical question. Just kidding.

Everyone, including yourself, already knows the distinction between form and content. You probably have drawers in your house --- whether those drawers are in your kitchen cupboards, or in your bathroom "vanity", or in chests or wardrobes in your bedroom. All drawers have the same "form" --- meaning shape in the cases of drawers --- and similar functions from which the name "drawer" is derived. People "draw" them out of; or "withdraw" them from; some sort of surrounding enclosure or cabinet. So almost every drawer has a similar "form"/(shape in this example). But the CONTENTS of kitchen drawers, bathroom drawers and bedroom drawers are (usually) different items which never have the "form" of a drawer. No sweater, underwear item, kitchen utensil, or bottle of pills --- all which may be found in the different drawers of different cabinets in different rooms of any house --- ever has the "form" of a drawer. But such "contents" are contained in [or the contents of] drawers. So form and content are basic distinctions in almost everything, including the drawers of people's homes.

Most cars have similar forms, but the contents "under the hood", or in the passenger seats of a car, may be very different, in different cars, while never having the "form" of a car. e.g. the driver.

Similarly most business letters have a standard "form" [location addresses of the sender and recipient; a formal address such as "To whom this may concern:" or "Dear Sir:", a body of the letter, a closing such as "Yours truly," or "Yours sincerely" and a signature] but the contents in the body of a business letter can be extraordinarily varied --- anything from Advertizing a product to the transport of a Zoo animal from location-x to location-y, as will other "contents" differ --- e.g. who signs the business letter and to whom it is addressed.

Breakfast is one form of meal, snacks are another form (of eating) and dinner is another form of meal. But the CONTENTS of one's breakfast, snack or evening meal, are an entirely different thing, for different persons, in different cultures. Exercize is a "form" of activity. The "contents" of your exercize regime may be very different if you are a swimmer or a tennis player. Warfare is a "form" of human behaviour. But the weapons "contents" of an ancient army, at war, were quite different from the weapons "contents" of WW II combatants. There are various forms of music, such as jazz, rock, classical, opera, pop, hip-hop, r&b etc. But the "contents" --- lyrics and/or melody --- of various "forms" of music differ greatly.

So you actually know such distinctions, given the distinction between a purse and its contents or a backpack and its contents, a refrigerator and its contents, or a letter and its contents. So too there are different forms of censorship and different "contents" which may or may not be censored.

e.g. People practice "self censorship" all the time. That "form" of censorhip is usually called "politeness" or "manners", where people censor the widely varied "contents" of their own minds from those whom they know they'd offend if they actually stated their actual mental "content" [othewise known as thoughts or opinions]. Then there is exterior censorship by others, which is a different censorship "form" [involuntary] from self-censorship [voluntary]. But, once again, the censored CONTENTS can be widely different. News content may be censored. Religious content may be censored. Antireligious content may be censored. Political content may be censored. Advertizing may be censored. Movies, books, comedy, music, etc. etc. --- all having distinct and distinguisable "contents", as well as "forms" --- may be censored.

So the next time you are "confused on his discription(/description)", it would be good to actually provide your answerers with the actual words of Socrates which have confused you. Plato is quite good at providing the context of Socrates's stated contents. Plato would never censor the contents (statements) of a pythian priestess at Delphi [no matter how arguably irrational, or obscure were the contents of the oracle], but would censor any poet who ridiculed Delphi, whether the "form" of ridicule was a play, a poem or a song --- no matter how "artistic/competent" the ridicule. Plato was that sort of "censorer" --- arguably because of the irreverence of much Athenian comedy/tragedy which was seldom (if ever) censored. One such irreverent comedy, by Aristophanes [The Clouds featuring a ridiculed/ridiculous Socrates] played a role, according to Socrates/Plato, in Socrates's trial, conviction and death sentence [Plato's Apology 18d re. Socrates's "invisible opponents" whom he cannot even name, quote:- "...unless one of them happens to be a playwright."].

Would you take your child to the zoo with the swine flu going around?

abbysmom .

We have had a trip planned for awhile now to take our kids to the brook field zoo in Chicago. We are going this Saturday and my daughter is very excited it is all she talks about but now i am not so sure with the flu going around if it would be a safe thing to do. Would you take your kids?
I was never worried about being around the animals just being around a lot of people

Answer
Yes, I would go. There are usually no pigs at the zoo even in the children's petting zoo section. And so long as you keep hand sanitizer available (take a backpack) and use it often, I would say go and have a great time. And as for being exposed to possibly contaminated people, there is no more chance of getting it from people visiting the zoo than you would at the mall or or grocery store or somewhere else where large numbers of people congregate. I say keep your plans intact, go and enjoy the day!

Ideas on how to make a sewing class FUN?
I teach students 3rd through 5th grade how to sew and I want to make our hour in class fun for them while they learn. Any ideas?

Answer
Keep the projects quick and easy and colourful. Kids that age like things they can use and don't have patience for projects that take too many sessions to complete. Doing smaller items that are finished quickly builds confidence and it's easy to build up on successes with slightly more complex projects. A little drawstring bag made of quilting cotton for shoes or gym clothes is always a favourite when I teach little kids. I always allow the kids some freedom in picking the colour of fabric, as long a it's quilting cotton. Quilting cotton is easy to cut and sew and an excellent choice for kids because of the endless variety of colours and prints. A simple pencil bag is also a favourite. Simple pillows are also good. For the older kids a pair of pyjama bottoms from cotton flannelette can be a final project worth trying. For the younger ones a backpack or school bag works well. Don't fall for the allure of furry stuffed animals, the fur is difficult to sew for beginners and it can be be more frustrating than fun. Another project to avoid is an an old fashioned apron. Little boys will be lost because they don't relate to the item, and some little girls will rebel against such an old fashioned and slightly sexist project. (Trust me, I've been teaching kids for a while.) It may be traditional, but it's not the best idea. If you can convince the kids that they can make useful and good looking things themselves, they should become interested on their own. Kids love to be able to express themselves and show off what they have made, and sewing allows plenty of room for both.

I teach through a fabric store and part of the deal is that the kids buy patterns from the store. I recommend the Kwik Sew Learn to sew line. The first projects are quite simple, they even have a couple no-sew projects to teach basic cutting and laying out. Here's the page with all the beginner projects You can get a couple ideas of what type of things beginners can make: http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/cat_thumbs.cfm?Cat=Learn_to_Sew&Level=KWIK_Start&QL=KwikStart I start the kids with number 3525. The pattern 3595 is the pyjama pattern I use. If you do a search through about.com's sewing site there are a few similar free patterns you can use: http://sewing.about.com/

In conclusion, keep it simple, keep it colourful, and allow some creative freedom.
