at community college, do you carry your backpack into classrooms?

i start 2mm!!
oh ya and is it easier to carry your laptop with you to your classes?

Answer
Yes because whereelse are you gonna put it? It's not high school, so there's no lockers. Everyone just puts their backpack on the floor leaned up against the side of their chair or under the desk. A lot of girls just carry a big purse or tote bag instead of a backpack. Personally, I carry both a backpack and a small purse. It's all personal preference and since it's college, no one is gonna judge you like in high school since everyone has matured. Some people even use a roller backpack.

Pictures of raw totes and/or backpacks for freshmen year?

Hey, I'm a girl and im going to start highschool next year so I'm really excited but at the same time a bit nervous. I know its a pretty long time from now, but time goes by fast. My questions are: what would you use, a tote bag or a backpack? And why?
Also, leaving pictures would be awesome, thank you!

Answer
DON'T GET A ROLLER-BACKPACK!!!
It will be a big mistake! You're in high school at that point, not in primary!

It depends on if you have lockers (to understand the amount of stuff you will be carrying). You will also have to consider if you have to bring any books to school for your classes.

what are the four different kinds of tents?

I need to know for a Camping merit badge in Boy Scouts

Answer
Well, from what I found there are more than four basic designs--and many hybrids from those. You'll have to do a little of the work yourself I guess. The first four listed are the 4 basic though, I believe:

Dome Tents
Three or more intersecting hoops with the Tent cover form a multi-faceted ground floor with a dome. The added hoops give this tent increased strength in comparison to Wedge Tents. However, they are mostly pretty difficult to erect. Most 4-Season tents are domes with four intersecting hoops.

Wedge Tents
Two intersecting hoops with the Tent cover form a square to round pocket. These tents are very popular in Hiking as they combine great strength in combination with the least use of material and weight.

Traditional A-Frame Tents
Two-legged frames at the outer ends of the Tent with the Tent cover form a triangular pocket. Old backpacking tents were often A-frame Tents. The increased roominess of hoop tents and domes has replaced most A-frame tents.

Pyramid Tents
One central pole and the Tent cover pulled tight and spread out around the center pole form a pyramid shaped pocket. Pyramid Tents are rare in Hiking as the center pole effectively divides the Tent in multiple smaller compartments.

Avian Tents
One or two straight poles with the Tent cover spread out create a covered ground area. They are mostly used for quick shelter and generally light weather conditions.

Hoop Tents
Use one to three hoops with the Tent cover to form a tubular pocket. The curved walls give a bigger volume with the same ground surface. Hoop Tents are surprisingly strong as they divide pressure over the full length of the hoops.

where online can i find real swords that wont break from use?

Dalton Hyd

but i still want it to look cool
i know that but i just want something that's not as easy to break as a decorative sword

Answer
Cold Steel has a variety of swords that are solid and made from high grade carbon steels. Rapiers, dao, jian, katana; whatever you want, you can probably find one here.

http://www.coldsteel.com/category/4_1/Swords.aspx

Traditional Filipino Weapons makes great... traditional Filipino weapons.

http://traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/

And this place, which another poster put up, seems to have some decent katana.

http://www.budo-aoi.com/

Or you could just pick up an Ontario machete, which is what I tell almost everyone to do. Chances of you ever taking a katana off your wall if you're not way into kenjutsu is about zero. Odds of you taking an Ontario machete with you on a backpacking trip or the next time you go camping are pretty good. If you actually had cause to use either as a weapon, it'd more than likely be in your house where the length of a katana becomes a hindrance and an 18"-22" machete shines in comparison. Good machetes cost $20 and good swords cost $250+.

Can I take a 4 and a 3 year old to a Rangers game?

kids backpacks baseball image

Hicktown g

Someone offered me free tickets. The 4 year old likes baseball, would it be alright you think?

Answer
If you can wrangle two kids at once, you're golden. Go to the game, don't expect to get to watch too much of it, and have fun.

My oldest attended her first Rangers game at age five months.

Tips.
1. Bring money.

2. You underestimated. Bring more than that.

3. Bring your own water bottle. I prefer Aquafina because the wide mouth makes refilling at a fountain easier. Chill or freeze it ahead of time and drink the meltwater, you'll look like an old pro at game-going. (You can bring in some foods as well, so if the kids have favorite snacks, stock up.)

4. Set a strict limit of one toy, t-shirt, or souvenir per kid, and let them know this ahead of time. Ballpark tchotkes are not cheap.

5. There are kid-things out past centerfield -- pitching cage, little whiffleball diamond, &c. They might enjoy these.

6. There are plenty of restrooms, but scope out the nearest ones ahead of time.

7. Bring a diaper bag to hold your stuff, even if the kids are out of diapers by now. They cannot refuse you a diaper bag! (The Rangers got really hardass about backpacks post-9/11, but the panic reaction has greatly softened by now. But they can't exclude a diaper bag. Remember to have diapers to maintain the illusion.)

8. Bring small kid blankets. Not for warmth, but for snuggling down if one or more gets sleepy.

9. Box of wipes. Kids + ballpark food == messy. Spare shirts and shorts are your call.

10. Learn the lyrics to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". You'll need to know them in the middle of the seventh inning.

11. If your kids are firework-adverse, know that the Rangers set off Roman candles (loud ones) for any Rangers home run and at the end if they win the game. Prepare accordingly. (They also play a music cue whenever a Ranger goes deep. It's the theme music from the movie The Natural, composed by Randy Newman. Great stuff. People always want to know what the home run music is. Now you already know.)

12. Bring a digital or disposable camera and capture some memories. Most fellow fans are friendly, so don't hesitate to ask someone help take a group shot.

What is a good Halloween costume that will make me look cute?

Liz C

I am 16 and i want a creative Halloween costume but i also want to look good when going to parties but i don't want to be slutty. Please help me come up with ideas. I could be pippi longstocking, but its not my first choice. I want a unique costume that will make me stand out too. Thanks!! :)

Answer
well it's not exactly cute but it is unique. one year i went as a speed bump :) i dyed white sweat pants and sweat shirt yellow and spray painted the tires on my parents car and had them drive over different places on the sweats and did the same with a bicycle. it was really interesting and everyone thougt it was hillarious.
i also went as a school girl one year but it was a play on words. i just wore things from a lot of different schools. like a tshirt from one school, shorts or sweats from another, a baseball hat, maybe a backpack or a jacket or something from another, whatever you can find actually. and universities are usually easier than high schools because they tend to have more clothing and accessory options.
or you could try to do something cute from everyone's childhood like a character from a tv show. something like strawberry shortcake would be easy since she just wears jeans and a striped shirt and you can usually find her hat in the kid aisle of party supply stores like party city. or do something current like dora the explorer, or get some friends and go as the backyardigans.

Answer
it's called a randoseru (ransel (it's a dutch word) ã©ã³ãã»ã«
try searching the web with this word, maybe e-bay.

N.B.ã©ã³ãã»ã«are only used by elementary school kids, especially between 1st to 4th grade (many 5th-6th graders feel embarassed...some just simply broke it),

the ã©ã³ãã»ã«used to be Black for boys and Red for girls, but nobadays you can find different shapes and MANY colors (pink, blue, yellow, green, beige, brown ect..) some even have popular characters or brand names such as Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, Puma ect...

It is a very expensive bag, normaly coasting between 25000yen to 40000yen ($250-$400). But you can probably find some cheap quality ones for about 10000-15000($100-$150)...dunno, you may find very cheap used ones or fake replicas on the net too.

Here's the web of one of the most popular ã©ã³ãã»ã«makers: http://www.randoseru.ne.jp/

Please cheap. Stylish and not to big. Online is okay.
Can anyone also recommend a store with really big purses. Cute and stylish. Affordable.

Thanks:)

Answer
I actually am on the same quest to find a backpack, but so far here's what i got.
http://store.americanapparel.net/rsanc501.html
Here's the only backpack American Apperal has. It's not shiny, which is a good thing but it just seems sort of blah.
http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/Accessories/Bags/MessengerBagsBackpacks.jsp
Hot Topic has some backpacks but I really just love the yak paks. My sister and I are just obbsessed with the teal print.
http://www.tillys.com/tillys/Categories.aspx?ctlg=020_Girls&cid=1094&size=&color=&brand=|Yak+Pak&sort=0&PageNo=0
Tilly's has some really cute backpacks but it's not my style, but i suggest looking into those.

http://www.lesportsac.com/store/7812_4029.html
These are LeSportSac backpacks which i love love love love but it's not cheap, but if you were willing to splurge, they'll last forever. I have my sister's handme down and it's maybe 5 years old.

Here's some more 'yak paks'
http://www.roxy.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4010630&cp=2818169.3176247
I love this backpack but it costs around $45 which is pretty expensive.
http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=10&pid=T501
JanSport has a lot of neat backpacks but there isn't a lot of choices it really isn't backpack season yet. You would have better luck if you looked around august.
http://www.dakine.com/girls/packs/hana/
These are adorable and really versitile so i kinda love them. i don't know how much they cost.
http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/XGN.aspx?N=4294966978&SearchString=backpack&Ntt=backpack&SO=0&PSO=0&SearchRedirect=True&CmCatId=searchresults
I really suggest going to JC Penny first though because there are so many choices and cute backpacks! mostly the prices range from $20 to $30.
If you don't find any backpacks you compleatly fall in love with i suggest you try to use a tote bag. Hollister, American Eagle, VS Pink, and Aeropostale have mazing bags. Though before you buy look into the school dress code. At my school we arn't allowed to use them because it could be potentially dangerous (?!)

Ok I am a teen and i need to go back-to-school shopping for things like tees, jeans, tanks, shorts, shoes and etc.. As a parent how much would you give a 13 year old girl going into 8th grade for back-to school shopping? How much do you usually give your daughter? Or how much would you give her?

Answer
200$ It's what I usually get. Look for sales. :) (trust me, with sales, and only 100$, it still didn't work, and I bought only 2 tees, a backpack, and two pairs of shoes! all on SALE!)

How do you bring your books to and from school? A backpack, tote bag or just carry them?

Q. I was just wondering. It's really divided at our school. The guys all bring backpacks but for the girls are divided. There are many who bring tote bags, many that bring backpacks and many that just carry their books.
I currently bring a tote bag. What do you do? Also what grade are you in?
My school has lockers. I sometimes bring a lunch when I don't buy.

Answer
i carry a tote.
well, the ones from like hollister and abercrombie.
they're nice and have a lot of room.
if they're not big enough, you can always buy bigger ones.
totes are pretty and can double as a purse in a way. ;)

almost all girls in my high school use totes.

Bedroom ideas for 3 boys?

kids zebra backpacks
on Clothing & Accessories Luggage & Bags Backpacks Disney

J

My three sons are going to be sharing one bedroom. They are aged 6 1/2, 4 and 4. The bedroom that is going to be theirs is pretty large (14-4tf X 12ft) and has a bathroom and a large closet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to organize and arrange the three kids in one room? I would to give them some space away from each other. Any themes are appreciated as well. Thanks!
I'm going to put this question in the parenting section too, in case anyone has ever been in my situation.

Answer
I like the idea of two sets of twin bunk beds, also. In particular, this is better than:

-three separate beds eating all your floor space.
-a double on bottom, twin on top bunk that would sleep all of them now but they can't stay this way for long...how long can two boys sleep together in a double bed?
-a loft-type system that can be dangerous if you don't execute it properly, and expensive if you buy a kit or have it done professionally.
-PLUS you get room for a buddy to sleep over.
-AND you have room for the twins to be at ground level and your older son to be up top like the big boy he is. As they grow up and top bunk is more inconvenient than cool, and anyone can be up there safely, they can rotate the sleeping arrangements.

As for storage spaces, I would say like with the beds, you need to go up where you can. Just don't put things so high that kids can't safely reach and do for themselves. As they get taller and more coordinated you will have more freedom to build up.

I don't know how you feel about individuality and where you draw the lines. I think each kid should definitely be allowed his own things, and personality, of course this is true. But you might consider some things community property to be stored together and shared among them...some of their toys and books and media, more expensive stuff like their TV and game systems and maybe some sports equipment...

One thing I would do if I had three young boys that close in age is extend this principle to socks and maybe even underwear too. I would gather up every one of their current socks and toss them out...and replace them with 50-60 or so pairs of IDENTICAL cheap white socks for them all to share. Keep dirty in the bathroom in a big roughtote or maybe even a kitchen style wastebasket with a swinging lid, labelled boys whites...wash them all together once a week in hot with bleach to keep them sanitary and bright...dump them unfolded into another container for storage of clean. This eliminates the drama of pairing up socks and sorting among people, and the waste if any get ruined or go missing. You might keep another (smaller) collection of identical black dress socks. Clean out and replace everything every year, maybe in the spring when you are spring cleaning and organizing, and when you aren't already saddled with back to school expenses or holiday gifts. This might be a hundred dollars or so expense every year. A small price to pay for such convenience all year. I think you can get at least another five years out of the collective sock arrangement. You might have to abandon the underwear clause a little sooner hahahh.

As for decor, I would go with a larger theme for the room, and each kids personal things...their dresser, their desk, their backpack, can be done in a particular element of that theme to both express themselves and distinguish their stuff. A bit like color coding but a little more descriptive I guess.

Animal themes abound...could do the room in the big theme and each kid decorates their stuff with an animal...you could do farm (duck, goat, horse) pets (dog, cat, hamster) dinosaurs (bronto, stego, pterydactyl) bugs (grasshopper, spider, bee) zoo (zebra, elephant, giraffe) etc. You could do sports...do the room to look like a stadium or locker room or sportscasters studio, or hang jerseys and display sports equipment. Each kid gets a separate team...or same sport, each kid rocks pro-college-their school, or each kid decorates with a different sport. You could do music...album covers or music notes, etc...and each kid gets a different singer or band or rapper, or each kid gets a different instrument. You could do games...decorate with vintage game boards, and get lamps and furniture that resemble game pieces. Each kid could be cards, dominoes, and dice. You could do a cartoon room...each kid decorates with a different cartoon. Or do a Disney room and each kid gets a different character. You could do bright colors and everyone gets a different shape...circles, squares, triangles.

Where can you buy animal printed backpacks?

Melly7

I don't mean zebra or leopard print, I mean fabric that has animal design on it. Or just a large animal printed on it. I found really cool ones, bit their really small because they're for little kids. This is the kids one I really like. Or other cool printed backpacks besides the normal brands. I like patchwork and hippie like backpacks. http://www.shopfiddlesticks.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=80_92&products_id=431

I'm 15 by the way, so it has to be normal size.

I need a new backpack. It needs to be big enough to hold a some big binders and textbooks that I will be carrying around in highschool and that will last for use in college. Which one should I get?
I would specifically like to know which backpack brand would be best to have

Answer
I'm at University and I bought a new bag after I got accepted. I really, really love my Taargus. It's large enough to carry around my books, it has a padded compartment for my laptop, the straps are padded, and it has a strap across the front to distribute the weight more evenly. It also has 2 pouches on the outside that are the perfect size for water bottles or soda bottles. They're a little more expensive than something like a Jansport, but they hold up really well and are more ergonomic.

I cant decide between getting a small or medium nike or addidas duffle bag for college?

Get the big one, and if it's too heavy, make some random boy carry it.

Any ideas for collecting donations for youth program?

LSmith

I volunteer for a nonprofit that offers programs like tutoring, sports, art and mentoring to foster care youth. We tried so hard to collect donation for back-to-school supplies and were under our goals which means some kids get stuff while others don't. It's really sad. So we gave to their youth who participate the most. But that discourages the kids who didn't get anything and they think there is some favoritism.

How would you collect donations in these hard times for a cause you really care about.

Answer
Get involved with area schools, churches, youth groups, sports leagues and scout groups. Write to their community service coordinators (or whoever would best fit this description) and ask to be put on a list of organizations looking for help.

In particular, find out who in your community encourages or requires community service. Ask kids to run small grade-level or school/church/team wide drive for the items you're looking for. Do it in advance so you can bank the bulk of the items for the coming year and fill in as necessary. 5 kids with 20 friends each bringing 1 school item equals 10 filled backpacks. Get a whole school involved and you may be able to cover your program for the year and attract new donations.

Also consider getting volunteers involved in more direct ways. People who are invested in a program are more likely to support it financially.

I run a small non-profit and I've been spreading the word about our program to supply gently used sports uniforms and footwear to kids in rural Mexico. I was just contacted by a family whose 4th grader is interested in running a drive at his school as part of a run for class office. Apparently it's a tradition at his school to prove one's leadership through such a project. I know he won't be able to supply a very large part of what we need, but every little bit helps and the publicity we'll get out of it will be very valuable. We'll run a thank-you in the newspaper, put his face on our website and benefit from the word-of-mouth publicity at his school.

How should I give flowers to a girl I like at my college?

hey

So I like a girl at my college who doesn't commute, so she bikes to and from school and only has a backpack. I don't think I could give her a vase, so should I give it to her in that plastic that they wrap it up in or like a basket or something else?

I'm just wondering which one is the best for her since I don't know a lot about flowers.

Thank you!

Answer
Aww I think its cute and very sweet. Talk to the flower people at the flower shop I bet they will be more than happy to help you out. Make sure u find out what flowers that she likes and AREN"T ALLERGIC TO! if she is allergic to them she will hate you forever so make sure to find out what she likes and it helps knowing her favorite color. I wish my bf would do that for me. I think its cute! :-)

Are backpacks still ok for a college girl?

musiclicio

I've been using totes and other one-shoulder bags for school for a while now, but now I'm getting achy shoulders. Are backpacks too "high school" for college? Any other suggestions to relieve the stress on my shoulder?

Answer
Not at all. I used a backpack all through college (graduated this May). Don't be so concerned about what other people think, all that matters is what works for you. Nobody really cares what you wear or use in college, they're too busy being concerned with their own stuff.

Is it right to put your child on a leash?

Poor

I'm not kidding, I was at the store and I saw a dad with a leash or some kind of rope on his little girl, it was around her neck, and the dad was pulling the rope with his hand like he was walking a dog or something. The girl was probably like 3 or 4 I'd say. Ok I think that's kind of messed up, she was treated like a dog? I don't think anybody should put a leash on their kid.

Answer
I do not agree at all with the leash around the child's neck. That is very dangerous. I do however like the little backpacks that they have for children who run alot that have a little leash on it. The backpack will be like a monkey or some kind of animal so the child will like to wear it. and it has like a long tail, or leash so you can make sure that your child does not run away, get lost, or kidnapped. Some people say that they are cruel and that you should not do that to a child, but it's alot safer than loosing your child in a crowd, and definitely better than putting a dog leash around a childs neck!

What do you think about putting toddlers on "leashes"or harnesses?

Dakotas ma

I was at the fair last night and saw a bunch of kids on leashes or harnesses. It was like a cute little kitty or bear backpack thing. It looked pretty cute plus it's a great way to keep your children safe. I used to be against those because they actually looked so inhumane but now they're cute and the straps are wider so it doesn't look like it would be uncomfortable. What are your opinions on this????
This comment is to samantha24.... Do you think that it's better for a child to watch his/her mom get punched in the face than it is to have them on a leash for a few minutes. Who are you to set down a law and punishment for something so pety?

Answer
I have one because my hubby and I go out to alot of places where there's alot of walking - like all day adventures to major outlet malls, county fairs, Disneyland, etc. My 15 month old gets fussy from being penned up in her stroller for hours. I love to let her out to walk - but I dont want to let her totally free to dart out in front of a car or other people or grab some poisionous plants in a planter, etc.

Basically I only use it to let her stretch her legs and I have to watch her so much more than when shes securely in her stroller. Also - Im a little paranoid about someone snatching her up and running off with her - and when she's on the leash - I know would-be bad guys will see than Im RIGHT THERE and not try anything bad.

I really hate the people who use the harnesses and then ignore what the child is doing. I see this all the time with people shopping in the malls - the mom is looking at one rack and then the kid is destroying the next rack over but the mom has no idea because she feels overly secure in her child's location - just because its on the harness.

Does anyone know where to get a cute backpack with enough space?

I have a reputation at my school for having cute backpacks and I want to keep it up. I'm going to the 10th grade so I'm looking for one that has a good amount of space for textbooks and that's a pretty reasonable price (Not over $100). My favorite brands are Tokidoki, Kidrobot, Harajuku Lovers, and Volcom because they have pretty good backpacks that have cute, colorful prints and good amount of space, but of you could find me a brand that's similar to them then that would be great. :) Here are a couple pictures of my previous backpacks to give you an idea of the styles I'm into.

Kidrobot

Tokidoki (Yeah its not the backpack, since I couldn't find a pic of it, but imagine that same print on a backpack)

And since I've never had a Harajuku backpack I'll show you a pic of one of my bags by them.

My girlfriend got hers at Victoria's Secret from the PINK collection. They have been so popular that they are hard to find in stores though. There are a variety of colors ands styles. They are usually just under $40 but some cost more. They are very cute!.

Know any good backpacks that can meet my needs?

Caitlin

I'm looking for a backpack for my summer job as a camp counselor. We'll be taking a lot of field trips and I basically want a small-medium sized, light weight backpack that will be easy to carry around every where I go all summer. I will just need it to hold a folder for roll sheets and paperwork, first aid, water, sunscreen, change of clothes occasionally, lunch, phone, wallet, keys.

I'm not interested in any big hiking backpack with tons and tons of compartments and straps. So if you know of a style or have a review of one, I would really really appreciate it!

I really LOVE the Jansport Originals Right Pack, if that helps. But the only thing is that it doesnt have a side water bottle holder. I also like the North Face Recon style from what I've seen online...but It looks like it might be a bit too much. Anyone have any experience with it..? I wouldnt mind paying the price because I could use it as a school/laptop bag as well.

that one is cute, and has a couple pockets so you can organize but is not crazy.

this one has a laptop sleeve, so you could use it after camp.

Also, some tips for Disney 'first timers' with kids? We are going the week after Christmas with two 13 year old's! Thanks.

Answer
Bring the same things that everyone has been telling you with literally EVERY. SINGLE. QUESTION. you've asked about this in several sections.

You keep posting the SAME QUESTION over and over and over and over again. Do you expect the answers to really magically change? They're really not going to.

You bring refillable water bottles. Bring extra money. Bring a backpack. Bring ponchos. Bring small snacks. Wear good, comfy shoes.

This is nothing new.

Thirteen year olds are hardly "kids" anymore-- they're young adults and can conduct themselves as such. It isn't like they're 2. They don't need strollers or coddling......

Traveling with my 2 1/2 year old ... (airplane)?

Q. Does he need a car seat??
I'm buying him a seat, but does he need a carseat?.. i'm traveling alone and dragging a him, luggage, diaper bag and a car seat doesn't sound easy! :)

Is there a place to change his diaper on the airplane??

What are the rules with liquid like juice and milk??
are their any rules about snacks?

thanks for any help!

Answer
Will you have a car seat at your destination for him to use? If not, then you should bring his car seat. Car seats can be used on the plane as long as they are approved for air travel. Look at the bottom of the seat, if it is approved for air travel there will be a stamp or sticker saying so. Technically, he does not need the car seat while on the plane, however, it is safer for him to use it. He'll also be more comfortable in it as it is familiar to him.

If you don't want to use the seat on the plane, but will need to use it at your destination you could check the car seat with your luggage. The airline will usually place the seat in a large plastic bag to keep it clean.

Try to curb check your luggage when you get to the airport so you have less to carry. Consider using a backpack as a diaper bag so you can have your hands free. You can also use your stroller in the airport and gate check it right before you board the plane. The stroller will be waiting for you outside the plane when you arrive at your destination.

Changing his diaper on the plane can be a challenge as the bathrooms are small. Some of the larger planes are equipped with handicapped accessible lavatories which are larger and sometimes have fold down changing tables. If possible, try changing him while he's standing (if he's only wet). You'll need to practice this at home before you go, but it will be much easier to have him stand on the toilet in the restroom while you pull off the wet diaper and put on a new one (pull ups are good for this, no tabs to deal with). Poopy diapers will still require him to lay down which will be a challenge. The flight attendants can often recommend the best place to change your child.

You'll want to bring extra diapers, wipes and clothes in the diaper bag/carry on as you never know when your plane may be delayed. Some kids have major 'blowout' diapers when they fly due to the unfamiliar surroundings and noises. You should also carry zip top bags to put the dirty diapers or soiled clothes in as no one wants to smell poo for hours on end.

For rules regarding liquids you should visit the TSA website http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm You are allowed to bring milk in larger quantities but you must declare the items to the TSA screener. The website will give you all the info you need.

Most airlines offer apple, orange, cranberry and tomato juices on the air plane as well as some milk. You may want to purchase a bottle of juice after you clear security before you get on the plane as the beverage service usually doesn't start until 30 minutes or so after takeoff.

You can bring snacks from home (a great idea actually). Stick to foods your child is familiar with, don't require refrigeration or re heating and that pack well and come in individual servings. Some good ideas are individual packages/boxes of dry cereal (Cheerios, Fruit Loops, Life, Chex, etc), granola or Nurtigrain bars, string cheese, peanut butter sandwich crackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (in disposable plastic containers so they don't get smushed), baby carrots, apple slices, small packages of cookies or crackers, '100 Calorie' packs, M&Ms, and other finger foods.

Foods that are a liquid, gel or paste consistency must be in containers of 3.4oz/100ml or less and must fit into one 1qt zip top bag. This would include items such as applesauce, jello, pudding, yogurt, soup, etc. If you want to take yogurt I suggest GoGurt or Trix yogurt which comes in tubes. Simply snip off the top and suck the yogurt out, no spoon needed.

Make sure you arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check your bags, clear security and find your gate. Take advantage of pre boarding so you can get settled before everyone else begins boarding. If you are taking the car seat you may want to review the owner's manual before your trip to familiarize yourself with how to install it in the air plane seat. (If you can't find the owner's manual, go to the manufacturerâs website and download or request a new one)

Gift registry for 2nd baby (same gender)?

mtgcnv67

It almost doesn't even feel right to have a baby shower for our 2nd baby, because it's another boy. And I can't even seem to think of enough stuff that we would need to justify having one. This one will be born in winter, while our first was born in spring, but it's cold 11 months out of the year up here in the NW, and I feel like the clothes for our first son would be warm enough in December. Our first born has outgrown pretty much all of the stuff we need for the newborn except for a crib. Here's all I can think of:

Crib (contributions towards one)
Mattress for Crib
Double stroller (contributions towards one) <---unsure...are they a hassle?
Diapers
Bigger diaper bag (hopefully one big enough for both of the boys)
Decorations (It feels wrong to take down my 1st son's; his room would be so boring!)
Night bear
2nd Baby Monitor
Clothes (don't need many; maybe just a few sets of warmer clothes in smaller sizes)

Any suggestions of things that I could be forgetting? Anything that you didn't have but wish you did with your babies?
I'm not asking your opinion on whether to have the shower or not...I'm asking for suggestions on a gift registry. Thanks.

Answer
For the diaper bag, you may consider the okkatots backpack http://www.squidoo.com/okkatots-diaper-backpack-bag
but if that is too large you could consider some of the ones reviewed in this page http://www.squidoo.com/diaper-bags-for-twins-diaper-bags-for-two-kids

Answer

Can someone please give me the answers to as many Camping Merit Badge requirements as possible?

Bob

I am really struggling with the Merit Badge and it is one of 3 I have left.
Thanks!

Answer
The answers are mostly in the Merit Badge pamphlet. Additional info can be found in the BSA Handbook and in the BSA Fieldbook. Consult the website for Leave-No-Trace for answers to #2. There are also numerous amounts of information about packs, sleeping bags, and stoves available online at websites for gear retailers such as REI and EMS. Wikipedia, while not the best source always, usually has cited articles to read about all of the topics you have questions about. Furthermore you can check out the annual gear reviews in magazines such as Backpacker, Outside, and National Geographic Adventure. You could also stop by any backpacking store and talk to the clerks and store managers. I am absolutely positive your Merit Badge councilor will be more than happy to help you with the answers you need.

If you have a specific question about something, by all means ask here, but what you are doing is tantamount to asking someone just simply give you the answers.

This is an Eagle Scout required badge. You need to find out the answers by reading the materials and putting the things into practice that you learn at camp and from your troop meetings.

Requirement #10 states: Discuss how the things you did to earn this badge have taught you about personal health and safety, survival, public health, conservation, and good citizenship. In your discussion, tell how Scout spirit and the Scout Oath and Law apply to camping and outdoor ethics.

I would say that taking the cheesy way out does not show Scout Spirit, nor does it capture the essence of the Scout Oath or Law.

Aside from the actual camping time involved, this is a rather easy badge to get. It just takes a little work. Getting the Eagle Scout Award takes work...so earn it.

Where can I find top of the line survival/camping equipment?

camping backpack kits
 on Berghaus Munro
camping backpack kits image

fudge_berr

I'm planning a back-packing hike into the Rio Grande region. What equipment would be best to take for this trip? I plan on being out there with my camera for two weeks. I need quality camping items that will not rip, shred, tear, or break. If you can provide a website link to a camping store, that would be wonderful!

Answer
I used to hike and camp quite alot, for me i found milets and black rock to be good stores however army surplus stores were the best for durable and reliable kit.

Imo it isnt possible to one day go out and buy everything you need, it takes time to put together the perfect set of kit for yourself and your needs and takes even more time to become proficient at using that kit.

What i would suggest is putting together a survival tin and always keep that on you at all times, my tin consists of:

Needle and thread.
Fishing hooks/ weights and line.
A flint + steel.
A knife.
Iodine tablets.
Potasium permanganate (spl?)
Plasters.
Bandage.
Small candle.
Matches covered in wax.
Money (local currency or us dollar)
Snare wire.
Safety pins.
String.
Button compass.

I dont have my tin handy so cant list everything but thats what i remember. With my survival tin i can survive in about 80-85% anywhere in the world (on land), more importantly than whats in your tin is knowing how to use it, just like with your main camping gear.

Personally i used to go minimalistic, a solid backpack (berghauss, karimor), small hammock, a poncho for a coat that doubled as a roof, a solid pair of boots(regular british army issue), plenty of thin waterproof layers, lots of socks, a twin set of british army mess tins to cook in and eat from, zippo lighter+gas lighter+fire rod, solid nylon climbing rope and a damn good knife (opinel 4inch and a 7 inch)+small diamond sharpening stone, compass(or two)+map. Oh and dont forget a knife, fork and spoon.

Aswell as that as many creature comforts as your willing to drag around with you. I alwaysed carried foot powder and some extra bandages for the inevitable blisters, pop them, drain them and bandage them whilst leaving as much skin as possible.

The most important thing you can have though is knowledge, read and experiment with all your kit, learn to use your kit for a variety of tasks, if one thing breaks be ready to use something else for the task. You will always forget something so be prepared to accomodate.

If the terrain is particularly unfamiliar take a gps positioning system and consider a satelite phone.

As for food i used to eat what i caught, snares and a small fishing set will allow you to set up traps and night lines ensuring a plentifull breakfast :P

I find the more minimalistic you go the more you learn to relly on yourself leading to a more enjoyable trip.

Hope that helped,

Don

I need a sturdy yet reasonably priced Archaeological field bag?

I have had multiple backpacks since my first field school but it always seems that my trowels cut right through them. I know they make leather sheaths for them but, I know me and I doubt I would actually use them. So do you know of a good sturdy bag that would be great for field work? Thanks :)

Answer
Duluth Trading Company makes some nice canvas, waxed cotton and leather shoulder bags and totes that are reasonably priced and well made. (don't confuse them with Duluth Pack, which is a different company that also makes wonderful canvas bags but they cost an arm and a leg).

http://www.duluthtrading.com

I like the reddish one in the upper right on this page:

https://www.google.com/#q=duluth+trading+company+purses&hl=en&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=Q9FlUZLzBZbk4APR_IHADw&ved=0CEsQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&fp=77f4a17ed2126bc8&biw=847&bih=388

I got my first field bags for geology and archaeology field camp from Army surplus stores. If you can find the REAL military surplus bags, especially the ones from NATO or German army stock, they are heavier and better made than the "Made in China" reproduction junk that a lot of supposed "surplus" stores have.

L.L. Bean has some canvas messenger bags that are fairly reasonable too.

By the way, Duluth Trading also makes excellent women's clothing for wearing on field sites including their "firehose canvas" strech cargo pants, vests and shorts and their long sleeved work shirts with the bi-swing back and long tails. Their tee shirts also hold up extremely well and have extra long tails so your butt isn't hanging out when you are crouched over peeling back your excavation unit with a teaspoon and toothbrush. They have great sun hats too, and miscellaneous gee-gaws that come in handy in field camps. The clothes are a little pricey but well worth it. They look great and wear like iron. Watch for clearance sales -- they practically give stuff away sometimes when they change designs and mark down the old stock.

Tip on trowel storage: hardware and building supply and paint stores sell plastic half moon shaped small paint cups with a handle that you can put about a pint of paint in and carry around or even hang on a ladder while painting trim. If you stash one of these in your field bag you can drop your trowels in, tips down, and they won't wear through the material or get mud all over the inside of the bag. I shove my work gloves in the plastic container too, to keep the trowels from shifting around and rattling. You can make a similar pocket holder for them by slicing the top off a cheap plastic flat canteen or flattened shape water bottle (there is a bottled water brand called "Fred" that makes the perfect shape for this, looks like a soft clear plastic gin flask.) http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.somethingtocroweabout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/fred-water.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.somethingtocroweabout.com/2012/09/25/meet-fred-bottled-water-with-a-personality/&h=775&w=600&sz=53&tbnid=3dNOtMotSN8QlM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=70&zoom=1&usg=__xjnc_4fJIDnLms96th6lnExA5m4=&docid=y4Xi2aqhz_hNBM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=rtZlUcjBOfHE4APzuYGACg&ved=0CHcQ9QEwCA&dur=453

What is the best dimension of bear locker I should plan for?

Jennifer

Normally my family and friends tend to go camping in areas, mainly privately owned campsites, where bear lockers are not mandatory. This year we are going to a number of state parks where locking food and other supplies in the bear lockers is mandatory. I have quickly realized bear lockers come in a variety of sizes listed on the National Parks website but I am also going to some State Parks this years too, such as Calaveras. I will be going to buy a new cooler for this summer and wanted to know the average locker size I should plan for so that I do not end up with a cooler that is too big. (I realize I could just call Calaveras for the locker dimensions but I am trying to plan for future trips too)

Also, I was looking at REI and saw those bear canisters for sale. Am I right in assuming that those canisters do not need to go into a locker as long as they are closed properly or will I get fined? That would save space in the locker if that was the case, otherwise what would be the point then?

Answer
The canisters are designed for backpacking. I have heard of Kevlar bags that even function as bear-proof storage containers. In remote wilderness settings, I have never had any problem bear enter my dispersed campsite. However, I have encountered many bears in developed campgrounds where bears have been trained to exploit food and trash left by irresponsible campers.

Contact California State Parks and ask the rangers about what typical car campers utilize to meet the "locker" criteria, if you intend to camp in developed campsites. Usually, where bear-proof storage is a requirement, such as Grand Teton National Park and Katmai National Park and Denali National Park, metal storage lockers are provided for each campsite. You are merely required to safely store your food and fuel. I have never needed to purchase a bear canister, although some parks rent them for backcountry campers.
