When my son started preschool, I let him go with me to pick out school stuff. He picked a few outfits, his new shoes, a backpack, and a lunch box. Letting him pick his school supplies gave him a sense of control and independence when it came to school. We read books about preschool and also visited on orientation day. At the same time, we didn't obsess over school - we simply talked about it occasionally over the first few weeks before school. I also started some back - to - school traditions. We have a special dinner the night before, and my son gets to pick the menu. The same goes with breakfast on the first day (as long as it's healthy - you don't want them sugar high on the first day!) and I packed him a special lunch. On the night before school, I packed his backpack with a few surprises for him to open after dinner. I put in a new pair of pajamas, a copy of Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go, and a little boys' digital watch so that he would know when Mommy was coming to pick him up. I have decided to keep doing such things every year.

shes 3 and has never been to a school......and when i had to work she went to my friends house that was her babysitter or if her dad was not at work she was with him. Her best friend is starting preschool to but i dont think they are in the same class...she is very scared and keeps telling me she does not want to go..

Answer
First, you sit down and have a good cry. When you have finished wiping the tears away, you get out their baby pictures and have a look. Remember how cute they were when they were babies? Where did all the time go? You have another cry. Then make sure they have wonderful outfits to start in. Have another cry when you look at them standing there with backpacks and lunch bags. Give them each a big kiss and then drop your daughter at preschool and your son at grade school. Sit in the car and cry. Phone the preschool and make sure that she is doing ok. After the third call when you hear she is doing wonderfully and isn't crying at all, you can have another cry. Wait until it is time to pick them up. Big smile on your face! Once you have chatted to each of them about their wonderful days, pat yourself on the back! You did it mum!!!
Ok, so that was me. You might be different.
Tell them how exciting their days are going to be, all the new friends they are going to make. Give them choices about clothes and lunches. Buy them special lunch bags of their choice. Remind them how much you love them and why they are going when they go.
Remember, if you do cry, it's because your a mum!
