My Friend and I are taking this trip right after we graduate from high school. We plan on staying in hostels along the way but thats about all we know. Any suggestions?

Answer
Awesome idea! Hostels are a great, cheap way to meet new people, and Irish ones are generally of quite high quality with good prices. :)

With backpacking comes the freedom of doing whatever you want without a plan, so you may not necessarily need to plan too much. At this stage, maybe start thinking about how much the flights are going to cost you, and approximately how much you might be spending on accommodation/food/going out. You can usually get good hostels for about 15 euro a night, and a pint is usually around five euro, just to give you a guide. It's a good idea to figure out how much you should be saving up, and how long you want to be over there for!

Also maybe start thinking about where you want to go in Ireland? Just browse the Internet, and even this Travel section to find other people's opinions of the best places to visit. My personal recommendations are Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny and Killarney - although I haven't been up north, and I've heard Belfast is worth seeing. The entire west coast is also very lovely.

A good idea is to book your first few nights somewhere, then figure out from there where you want to go, maybe with a vague plan. That way you can stay longer in places you really like. :)

For booking accommodation, I recommend www.hostelbookers.com - no booking fee, the best prices on the net, and helpful directions and reviews. Generally go for hostels with ratings of higher than 75%.

For getting around Ireland, if you're not driving a car, there are bus and train services. The bus services are much cheaper and really don't take much longer so I recommend them - www.citylink.ie has the best prices and can take you between most places. If they don't have a route you need, then www.buseireann.ie will, who are a bit more expensive, but pretty much go absolutely everywhere in Ireland.

For trains, head to www.irishrail.ie

As for sightseeing... most people will recommend the Giants Causeway (in Northern Ireland), the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Connemara... Blarney Stone... just have a poke around Irish tourism sites to see what's advertised. :)

My advice though is just to wing it mostly... book your hostels a few days in advance, you'll always be able to find a cheap deal, travel via bus, and enjoy gorgeous Ireland!
