I have alaskan huskies trained to pull a sled and scooter. I was thinking about taking them camping (no sled) this summer and need recommendations for a good dog pack that distributes the weight correctly. Thanks
Also mail order is prefered since I am living in a remote village.

Tips on mesureing and sizing would be apriciated.

Answer
Yes, I do have some recommendation for you! They're pretty expensive but I hear they can last 10+ years through intense backpacking:
They have a little guide on how to measure, also you can call them for advice too. Enjoy

What kind of small breed dog should I get?

I am looking to rescue a dog, but I have a weight limit of 25-30lbs.
I live in an apartment, so i want something that can be kind of chill indoors, but on the other hand I love to hike so I want to make sure it can make it through some tough terrain...
any suggestions??

Answer
If you want a dog that will hike well with you, avoid the brachycephalic dogs (e.g., dogs with squashed faces) like pugs, Bostons, French bulldogs, English bulldogs, Pekingese, English toy spaniels, etc. These dogs have airway restrictions and are not able to tolerate much heat, exercise or heavy breathing, so hiking with them could be dangerous.

I think the Cairn terrier suggestion was good, but some terriers can be very hard-headed and have a strong prey drive. If you plan to hike with your dog off-leash, a terrier might be tempted to run off after prey, and hard to train not to.

I had a very active friend who took his papillon backpacking, camping and canoeing all the time. According to him, it could keep up on the trail, loved the outdoors, was very obedient and easy to train, and it was afraid of nothing. He thought it was the ideal trail dog, and I saw lots of photos to support his claim.

There are miniatrue versions of the Austrailian shepherd (called a North American shepherd) and the border collie, both of which are 20 to 30 lbs. and are purported to have the intelligence and personalities of their full size counterparts. A cocker spaniel might suit your lifestyle. A miniature schnauzer is another choice with a completely different personality. West Highland white terriers and Scottish terriers are also good house dogs that can also be quite active.

Hope that gives you a few more ideas.
