Big Boss i

I'd like to hike the entire trail in 2012 (June-October). My brother's friend accomplished it this past summer, which after hearing about his travels ensured my decision. I'm having trouble finding decent guides/journals/tips on the web, though. Any of you have any links that could provide me with some information? Thanks!

Answer
A thru-hike of the AT will probably be one of the more physically and emotionally demanding things you ever do. It's good to see that you're starting to plan your trip now as there are a lot of considerations that have to go into such an undertaking.

Erik the Black's Backpacking Blog is one of my favorites and provides a lot of really useful and practical resources for distance hikes. Here is a link to some great posts he did specifically on the AT and some good resources.

The "Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers' Companion" is also a highly rated resource for those preparing for the the AT.

While the demands of this trail are great, but you WILL no doubt be greatly rewarded for your efforts.

Happy Trails!

Chance me for UC Berkeley, Irvine, Davis and LA?

I'm a California born student applying to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. I want to go into dentistry so I also applied to UoP's pre-dental advantage program as well as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Fresno State, East Bay, and SF state. Back up plan is to do community college in SF/Berkeley and transfer to UC Berkeley.

I come from a low income community and a sparse number of AP classes are offered at my high school; I took 5 of the 7 that my school offers.
Miscellaneous info: I am a Pakistani/Afghani first generation female student coming from a single parent low-income household. Really strong personal statement on cultural background and religion. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I got into Berkeley straight from high school, mostly because of my admission essay, not great grades.

Going to Laney (Oakland) or one of the other JCs in the area is a very good strategy, and it will save you money, if you don't get in outright.
