I'm looking for some ideas for a mounted scavenger hunt on the trails. We would prefer the kids did not carry anything back incase one of the objects the kids hold over the horses back may startle their horse. They will be put in groups with a leader(one f the instructors) who will carry a camera to take the photo of the items we send them to search for. Problem is, we don't know what we should have the students search for! We were thinking of putting out horsey objects out there or having a theme. Maybe Jew could turn it Ito a treasure hunt instead, where we create riddles that describe a spot on the trail and it'll bring h closer and closer to an object they can take a picture of, and then later we'll send out a leader to being back the object and give it to the groups who found it.

I've done 3 scavenger/treasure hunts.

The first was at a local gymkhana, unmounted which allowed the ponies a nice break after a hard days gaming. We were each given a list of items and a plastic bag, we had the run of the property to find things. Some items were listed as little riddles while others were quite clear.

The items included:
Bunny tails http://s2.hubimg.com/u/4929565_f260.jpg named rabbit tails in the list and was quite interesting seeing some of the younger kids make the connection between bunny and rabbit.
Clovers (3 leaf clovers, there was a bonus prize if anyone found a 4 leaf clover)
An oak nut aka Acorn
A piece of manure (there were some gross looks at this one)
Lucky beans http://www.richardstupart.com/images/luckybean.jpg
Orange twine (bailing twine ours as a significant orange colour throughout the region)
Horse food (aka grass)
A dandy yellow lion (aka a dandelion)

Oh gosh I can't remember it was such a long time ago, but I do remember it was so much fun. We all had to collect our own list but the bigger kids were on board with helping the little ones who didn't know where things were.

The second one was at my old riding school. We had clues as to where to go.
The old jumping tree (which is a tree that had half fallen over a mini dike and made a perfect xc jump.
Where the other hay is kept (which is a secondary hay barn where we keep surplice hay)
Find a needle in a hay stack/shaving stack (it wasn't actually a needle, hid horse shoes in the shaving stack with clues attached to them.
Where does Dac drink when he plays (one of the owners horses feed troughs in his paddock)

That one was also a lot of fun but unfortunately being such a small property you could see where the other teams where going even though the clues were mixed up.

The third was at a PC rally and we had it out in the reserve. Each check point had a volunteer standing at it with the next clue.
Clues included
Find the old quarry (there was an old small rock quarry that hadn't been used in years)
Where's the old man's log cabin (off a short beaten track is a gorgeous little log cabin nestled in among the trees)
Head east of the Beacon (there's a beacon in the middle of the reserve signally the highest point in the area it faces directly north so this shows your sense of direction - also east headed home, south was where we came from and west just leads to a dead end after a while and north is a fence line)
We were put into mixed groups so that each team had at least 2 older more experienced riders, one of which new the reserve quite well and knew where different areas were, as well as some little ones who were beginners. Our team had a little girl on a lead rein which we were able to pony between me and another rider. This ensured that no team would go galloping off and each team had to go no faster than a trot. We also had some clues where we had to get off and find them.

This one was also a ball with quite a few teams getting a little lost. Not lost in the sense that they were actually lost that was impossible as there were so many volunteers around each bend and junction that you couldn't get lost but some people still ended up going in the wrong direction.

I like the idea of taking pictures of objects as oppose to carrying things around that may spook the horses, but if there are objects that may need bringing back why not use a saddle bag or have the leader carry a small backpack that won't spook the horses.

One I did on a school trip was more a navigation hunt than a scavenger hunt. We were each given a map of the area and a pencil. There were about 20 markers covering a large area of probably 50 acres. Each marker had a number on the map and a corresponding letter on the marker. We had to find each marker (we had 3 hours) and match them up to the letters. This one was a lot of fun as if you looked closely there was a distinct route you could take to get each marker, however my group decided to take the route and ended up having to scale down a very bushy hill. We were all wearing shorts so ended up with scratched up legs. We didn't have a winner as it all went towards the end of camp points so for every marker you found you got a point for your team.

I hope I've given you some ideas you can use. I have been really wanting to do another scavenger/treasure hunt for ages now but I can't. lol

Answer
I think that if you also want a place to keep your things and school books, get a tote. If you don't mind carrying your books and binders in your arm, then I would suggest going for a purse. Personally, I carry a purse & use a bookbag. Honestly, I don't think anyone really pays that much attention! Do which ever you feel more comfortable doing! & good luck on your freshman year :)
