Philmont Backpacking Camping Stove?

spiderman0

Hello, I am planning a two week treck to Philmont Boy Scout high adventure camp in New Mexico. I can not decide what type of backpacking stove to carry with me. Can anyone give me a information on a specific stove that they have taken on long back packing trips and enjoyed, or did not enjoy?

Answer
We prefer the Whisper-lite international -- I have used it for over 17 years and many fuels. It competes well in heating time and is easy to maintain. We have several other types -- downside on canisters is packing them in and out (two small fuel bottles is easier)-- plus there are now so many types of canister stoves that require a specific canister. Check with your crew leader -- a crew of 12 needs only 3 stoves tops -- if you all have the same type packing and being prepared for repair is easier.
Have a great time Philmont is beautiful.

Where can I find a Batman bag for school?

kitkat

I absolutely love batman and I was wondering where you could find a big book bag (tote) that is big enough to fit books in it that is batman. I'm 15, so I don't want a little kids backpack. Or, I could sew one, but where can you find batman fabric? I've looked at Jo-annes fabrics, Walmart, and Fabric Depot. None of them have batman fabric.

Also, you can tell me of any other batman apparel. Thanks

Answer
walmart or target

How does Batman take people calling him names?

Thomas

I wouldn't believe Batman himself would take name calling name literally by anyone easily because I would assume it takes a lot to piss off Batman. Apparently one of my acquaintances used to be on my friends list, and 6 years ago he took a glance the Logo of Batman on the back of my backpack and I can't remember exactly what he stated. I think he said something like Batman is the worst hero ever because he doesn't have super powers? But so what? Not every hero is going to have super powers, so I don't know why he assumes that. I told him he conquered his fear, and he replied "With Bats?" He made that sound like it was pathetic and pointless, dumb animals to be afraid of. In my opinion, I feel like its perfectly okay to be afraid of something. Apparently he called Batman a baby and then a bitch because he was afraid of bats when he was a kid, but I'm not sure how Batman would take that. More than likely, I know Batman wouldn't risk his chances wasting his time beating up this typical kid up, but would he? I don't know, do you think he would or no? We all know Batman does not exist in this world, but if he did I suppose it would be a different story. I think he should watch what he says about Batman because he shouldn't underestimate the Batman, I mean c'mon he fights like an animal, he's very sneaky & quiet, and very clever. His upper body strength is incredibly strong.

Answer
Batman is not petty and I don't think he would care about what someone says. In the comics and the movies he does what he thinks is justified not by what people want and say he should do but by his own opinions. He has his own code of behavior and actions and because of it you have to respect the guy. I mean, come on, he took the position of protecting a whole entire corrupted city because he knew that no one else could do it and he saw how it was affecting everyone. Sure, he may not have super-powers but doesn't that make him more appealing then anything and even more relatable? He is the exaggeration of a good citizen taking action because the government or other people won't, and he trained himself vigorously to make that happen. Plus, the way his story is all planned out it is a plausible thing too. He is a multimillionaire who owns a military technology and weapons corporation and his "Bruce Wayne" persona has a say in that world. Like you said, Batman his highly trained in assassin techniques and stealth and is highly intelligent with plenty of resources. In ways this makes him better than most superheroes, even Superman. He knows his weaknesses so he fixed them so they wouldn't be such a weakness and then he learned everyone else weaknesses and secret identities. Case in point, Batman knows for a fact that he is not a problem for the "almighty Superman," so he got a hold of Kryptonite and carries with him at all cost. What I love about him is that he keeps a cool and level head in any situation and he isn't cocky at all. And because he knows his weaknesses he know where the enemy will attack and he easily counters them. I think your friend doesn't see the whole picture and doesn't know what he is talking about when it comes to the underlying text to Batman.

Where to hike in Vermont?

Vince

My father and I want to hike (and possibly camp) in Vermont in early March.

I was hoping someone may be able to suggest a good place to check out!

Answer
Mount Ascutney is a good hike. There are 4 trails. I'd rate these moderate. You can camp at the state park at the bottom.
Little Rock Pond from Mount Tabor Road is pretty flat and easy. You can backpack in and camp in a leanto.
Camel's Hump is a good hike.
Vermont State Parks with showers and hiking nearby: Lake Elmore, Groton, Smuggler's Notch, etc, etc.
If you're into backpacking with no showers get on the Long Trail.

where can I get a waterproof backpack?

Fez F

I'm looking to do some camping and need a good quality waterproof backpack. I need it to be twice the size of a standard backpack because I will carrying a good amount of stuff. I will be carrying a radio and a mini laptop so that's why I need it to be waterproof as to not damage my electrical goods. Does anyone know of a store that sells them? if not then a website will do thanks
or can I just buy a big backpack and spray it with waterproof spray? will that be sufficient if it rains?

Answer
You can spray a pack or tent, jacket, almost anything with products like Fabsil or Nikwax tx-10 or dozens of other products or wash the items in a solution of the proofer to waterproof them. Most of them can be bought in USA, UK and Europe, almost any country in the world, even in India, Bolivia, and some of the poorer African countries.
Nikwax
http://proadventureshop.co.uk/acatalog/Nikwax_Waterproofing_Products.html . . . . .

Fabsil

An easy option for a pack is to buy a waterproof cover for it. Many firms make them or you can make your own from polythene or proofed nylon sheet. A large heavy duty bin bag makes a good cheap alternative.
A decent quality bought cover will have pull cords to adjust it to your pack and the covers come in different sizes to suit 30l, 50L, 80L etc bags.
Some rucksacks have covers which are made especially for that model.
Covers also give added security in busy streets and at airports, enclosing everything in an outer cover and hiding zips and pockets, and help to protect against insects getting in. Last thing you need after a hooked-up tree shower is ants or other bitey/stingy things in the fresh clothes.
Wrap everything well before packing.
All sensitive pieces of equipment should have their own protective bags. I sometimes carry a stereo microscope, field microscope, PDA, tape recorder, notebooks, etc, and also a 5" Maksutov telescope for long range wildlife watching and for skywatching on camping or biology field trips.
All are properly fitted with their own padded waterproof bags for protection and are then packed in a Nomad Safari zip-around rectangular backpack which is very well made of close-weave material, insect proof and quite well waterproofed, but in wet weather and when checking it in at airports a home made proofed nylon fitted cover goes over it, well secured, and safely covering all the zips. The straps fold inside so it looks like a suitcase, very airport-friendly.
Nomad is a Dutch company which makes high quality equipment for camping and expeditions.
http://www.nomad.info/uk/about-nomad/news/details/?id=2 . . . ..
You can get expedition sized packs of 90L or more from various companies, but when loaded with stuff they can weigh over 50lb if you are carrying a lot of home luxuries or equipment.
It's you doing the carrying. Take care.
Have a good trip.

Backpacking, advice?

relaxandli

I'm going to backpack for a while in a year or two, I'm going to have a low budget,I will probably be camping ALOT and walking most of the way, also finding missionarys to help out and work my way as well. I plan on heading through alaska, to thailand, cambodia, maybe india where are some great temples? Then head over to russia and after that Spain, Eygpt Europe now I would very much like to travel to those places but is it safe to travel through Iraq and Afghanistan? I mean no disrespect, I just don't know with the war and all? Or would it be better if I skip Thialand and cambodia, and instead, Alaska to Chukota to Russian and so on?

I know this might sound confusing but I'm starting to roughly plan my trip =s

Thank you!

Answer
Since youre backpacking, southeast asia is a good place to go because it's really cheap especially if you're short on money.

Im looking for a backpack for outdoor?

Charles

Im looking for a backpack which has a lot of parts. It must be big cuz i will put a lot of stuff in that. I'll use that on travel. Mostly abroad trips. And the most thing is shouldnt e too expensive.

Thanks.

Answer
If you don't want it too expensive you should look for one secondhand. But it's hard to just suggest one... you should do your own research. Look at ratings and read reviews. Then if you can, try some on before you choose.
I usually start with REI when I'm looking for outdoor gear, so here's their site: http://www.rei.com/category/4500001_Backpacks

camping in texas?

brad w

my friends and i were going to go to texas for spring break, we were wondering if anyone knew of a place to camp that had a native indian theme to it. Like in the movies were there are mountains and streams. If any one knows of any were worth going please let me know

Answer
Like backpacking? campgrounds? we need more info here. Does it have to be in the Dallas area, or texas in general? If you want mountains you have to head west. Guadalupe mountains national park or big bend national park are both swell and have both options of campgrounds or backpacking. Guadalupe has the highest point in texas. There is Big Thicket national park which is much closer to Dallas, but its a strecth to say there are mountains. but its very pretty. Enchanted rock state park is a swell place and has a native american flavor too, I am not sure what the story is with camping there however.

Where can i backpack and camp in Texas?

chippa_10

In the Austin area and i would like to backpack into an area (prefereably a forest) and be able to camp a few nights far away from anybody else. I have been looking into the national forests in east texas like davey crocket and sabine. any suggestions? i would also really like to bring my guns and shoot targets! hunting would be an even better thing! please help me find a good place within driving distance. il drive 5 hours itf i have to

Answer
Any of the four national forests in Texas. But understand that you have to abide by all the hunting and firearms laws. And it is deer hunting season. Watch out for deer hunters. There are also nude hikers and campers, if that bothers you, stay out of the Sam Houston national forest.

Where can I get a cheap and new backpack ?

Schools coming up and i am going to a new school. My backpack had writing on it and at that school, it's considered "graffiti"
So where can I get one in the price ranges of $9.99-$20.99?
Thanks!

Answer
That's a tough one because of the price range you are asking for. Here are some suggestions:

Any ideas for collecting donations for youth program?

LSmith

I volunteer for a nonprofit that offers programs like tutoring, sports, art and mentoring to foster care youth. We tried so hard to collect donation for back-to-school supplies and were under our goals which means some kids get stuff while others don't. It's really sad. So we gave to their youth who participate the most. But that discourages the kids who didn't get anything and they think there is some favoritism.

How would you collect donations in these hard times for a cause you really care about.

Answer
Get involved with area schools, churches, youth groups, sports leagues and scout groups. Write to their community service coordinators (or whoever would best fit this description) and ask to be put on a list of organizations looking for help.

In particular, find out who in your community encourages or requires community service. Ask kids to run small grade-level or school/church/team wide drive for the items you're looking for. Do it in advance so you can bank the bulk of the items for the coming year and fill in as necessary. 5 kids with 20 friends each bringing 1 school item equals 10 filled backpacks. Get a whole school involved and you may be able to cover your program for the year and attract new donations.

Also consider getting volunteers involved in more direct ways. People who are invested in a program are more likely to support it financially.

I run a small non-profit and I've been spreading the word about our program to supply gently used sports uniforms and footwear to kids in rural Mexico. I was just contacted by a family whose 4th grader is interested in running a drive at his school as part of a run for class office. Apparently it's a tradition at his school to prove one's leadership through such a project. I know he won't be able to supply a very large part of what we need, but every little bit helps and the publicity we'll get out of it will be very valuable. We'll run a thank-you in the newspaper, put his face on our website and benefit from the word-of-mouth publicity at his school.

How does a guy teach a girl how to fight?

Q. My sister gets picked on at school and I dont live with her do it aint nothinq I can do about it so how do I teach her to fight so she can defend herself()she is fed up with ppl nd this is the second school where shes gotten picked on She doesnt want to tell her teachers they dont listen they target her out and shes 12 (dont tell me not ty o con df one fighting cause she need this)

Answer
One I can tell you they target her bc my sister is targeted and she's very smart and quiet. She starts coming out of her shell they may not. Ok well idk how old you are or big you are compared to her, but I learned when I did live with my brother mainly bc he beat me up every day and now no one who knows me messes with me. Now if you're too big to pick on her yourself and wrestle with (bc I in a fight she's got to learn to throw people off of her and take a hit, miss a hit, and throw a hard hit) if you're huge compared to her, I'm sure you know how, so I would show her the way you would move in a fight and let her use you as her punching bag. My sister gets picked on as well and she's 14 but she's a lover not a fighter and me and my brother are the fighters no questions asked. So I understand it's a serious matter. But why I'm saying if you're big, be her punching bag, you'll be able to take her hits, see how she moves, and that'll also build her muscle and she will punch harder and harder as you go. I just wouldn't suggest any martial arts mainly bc I believe they consider you a weapon then, correct? Idk. Get her to run, so she can learn to be fast. Get her to do push ups so she can hit harder. I mean I know she's young but if it's that bad and no one will help her, I'd take your time with her and just push her to the limit until she's a little slugger. If you're too far away bc you don't live with her, call her every day and tell her work out schedule. Make sure the parents know. I mean fighting isn't a good thing but you can only take so much. I am an armed security guard and all I want to do is protect my family. I mean if anything she doesn't necessarily have to be just strong. My brother told my a good one to do but she has to do it very fast while walking down the hallway so it'll embarrass these kids. But she does need to be strong if they get up swinging. Lol. Ok if the bully is walking down the hallway and has their backpack on BOTH shoulders (very important) she can run up and veeeerry quickly and as fast and as strong and hard as she can grab that top strap and pull straight down. She does it right their ass is hitting the ground. I mean maybe she won't have to end up fighting. I'd definitely teach her the best way I could, buy her a punching back to bulk up a little first but after that, if they pick on her, tell her to pick right back, or do it first. Make their lives hell. Put gum in their seats when the teach isn't looking before they sit make sure it blends in. Can't prove it was her, spray bleach in their seats, can't prove it was her. Teach her a spit bomb. A whole piece of paper in her mouth and just get it completely soggy soaked, when she's done, if she's close to the kid and can discreetly set it on their backpack or if theyre wearing a jacket with a hood set it in there or on the backpack and just watch the spit spread. To get them down fast she has to be fast but it catches them off guard every time, very quickly she can grab hair or a hood on a jacket. I like hair bc it makes better aim for the face. They dont see it coming so if she's fast enough and she grabs the hair and slams face downward as fast as she can, bam busted face in the floor, then she can quickly grab an arm and put it behind their back and push up by the elbow toward the head as hard and as far as she can. It hurts so bad they won't think of moving. Theres much more she can do, but if she definitely starts picking on them too and at least acts like she would shred them if they touched her, they won't. It's all an act. They're kids. Sorry I believe this is long but I had fun in school. Lol. I hope she turns out alright. I know they're just kids but my sister won't usually fight. Just busts noses and walks away. Plus when she's mad she's going to be able to fight a lot better and stronger than she knows.

jack a

in kentucky
i am 52 years old
in kentucky, I have one crime of a fight with my now ex wife, and i got sent to boot camp for a probation violation a dirty urine

Answer
Oh boy, you are in for a real treat!
It is a rehabilitation program that bases it's disciplinary regiment on the same standards used in a military boot camp. No guns for you, however.
You can look forward to waking up at 5 a.m. every morning, having yourself dressed and your quarters clean and spotless and ready for inspection by 6 a.m. You'll have a quick breakfast and then spend a day jogging for several miles with a 50-pound backpack, marching, running through obstacle courses, and various other sweaty activities all while being yelled at by an instructor who doesn't appear to like you very much. If you break any rules or regulations, you may be punished with more exercises or a loss of privileges.
The good news is the food is good and you get large portions. The bad news is that you really need all that food for the energy you are going to burn and you will be too tired at dinner to really enjoy it.

Where is a good place to hike/camp in Tennesee or Kentucky?

The Appalachian Trail! It goes through Tenn.
