Is it legal to carry a knife in Canada?

Andy Biel

I am somewhat confused as to the knife laws in Canada (specifically Ontario/Quebec). I've bought a fixed blade survival/hunting knife recently, the blade is about 6 inches in length, the handle in about 4 inches in length. Is it legal to carry this knife around in public? Is there a difference in laws between the countryside/forest and an urban area? Is there any laws regarding concealment (say in a backpack)? Bear in mind this knife is only for sporting/utility use not self-defence.
Thanks!

Answer
The laws are the same all across Canada as it's federal laws that apply, not provincial. As well, it is the same if you are in the city or in the woods.

With that having been said, a knife like you describe is legal to carry HOWEVER if you are carrying it in the city you will no doubt be questioned by authorities and the police will most likely seize it as a danger to the public if someone states they felt threatened by it. To have it in your possession somehow or to have it in a backpack is not normally a problem as long as you are not threatening anyone with it. I've often worn one while hunting or camping so thats not a problem because nobody else is around to be intimidated or threatened by it AND it's appropriate for the situation.

I'm 16 and I want to travel across Canada--how?

I'm very young, and I have a bit of money saved up. I'm not looking for high-class travel, I want to be living out of a backpack for a few years. I want to get to Saskatchewan (I'm in Ontario). I KNOW that it's possible and that it's been done, but how? What are some suggestions?

Answer
Look into getting a Canrailpass - it's good for 7 one-way trips (with a stopover on each one) anywhere VIA Rail travels, including the Canadian (which goes across Saskatchewan). You can also travel by coach bus - Greyhound is the main company but there are other companies for different routes.

Get a Canadian Hostelling Association membership so you get discounts at youth hostels.

Practice travelling ahead of time. If you live on a transit system, use it to explore your local area. If you have a bicycle, try taking day-long bike rides packing food, or cycling to a friend or relative's house for the night, carrying your necessities. Take a weekend and go somewhere else in Ontario by yourself on the bus, find a place to stay, feed yourself, read maps and see sights, and pay attention to what you feel awkward, uncomfortable or unprepared about. Practice finding a clean public bathroom in a strange city, finding internet access, finding a no-fee bank machine, and finding a pay phone. Also take a trip with another person, and learn to negotiate and make plans with a travelling companion. Some of the best trips have some solo portions and some portions where you're travelling with someone else, so practice that. Practice ahead of time will also help to gain you parental approval and support for a bigger trip, if that is an issue for you. Keep their trust by checking in when you agree to.

Get photo ID (a passport or driver's licence or alternative provincial ID). Get an ISIC (for discounts). Learn how to use pay phones, with cash, a card, or making collect calls. Get a backpack and learn how to pack it for non-camping travel. Memorise your social insurance number but don't carry the card, so that you might be able to pick up some casual employment along the way. Learn how to take care of yourself when you are mildly ill, and learn what symptoms mean you should go to a walk-in clinic or emergency room. Get in the habit of carrying your own provincial health card.

HOW do highschool trends start?

kids backpacks reviews image

Josh

Sperry's, kid backpacks, casual khakhis, moccasins. how do these trends start? do people just watch them on a tv show, or see them in a magazine?

Answer
Sometimes it is from a TV show, sometimes it is from music. Sometimes it is from word of mouth. The Harry Potter series of books originally got bad reviews from book reviews, but kids liked the books and told other kids, and that is what put J. K. Rowling on the map. Sometimes they see something on vacation, and they start doing that also and it just picks up. Sometimes they are trying to copy cat a person, like how Mary Kate and Ashley sold so much stuff. They were the original ones to market to tweens.

What is the average price of camping gear?

slee_fairy

Answer
Free. Your first time should always be free, especially for kids. In other words, you should go with an experienced camper(s) or a camping organization who will let you borrow their gear, since almost all campers have extra gear, the very thing you're trying to avoid by first borrowing.

After a couple of "free" camping trips under your belt you'll start to get an idea of what kind of gear you might want to purchase, and start to research materials, quality, prices, and reviews to determine the right choice for you, your camping style, level of comfort, camping plans, and budget. Reading books about camping and backpacking at your local library is a good start along with popular camping websites.

A mistake some people make is to try to buy the biggest and most expensive gear, which is usually overkill. Similarly, don't expect Wal-Mart gear to get you through more than a weekend or two. Somewhere in the middle is where I aim, in size, quality, weight and price.

How do kids carry snow suits, boots, gloves, and hats to and from school? Is there a bag for that?

Leanne :)

My kids have backpacks full of papers and need bags to carry, sometimes wet, snow stuff. Plastic bags just keep ripping. I got some canvas bags that worked great when they were smaller, but now they just can't hold everything.

Answer
my kids have mesh bags so the water drips out. can't remember where i found them online, but they come in multiple colors (to keep kids' stuff straight); are big enough to hold boots, snowpants, mittens, hat, and ice skating helmet if needed; have a drawstring closure; and can be slung over the kids' shoulders (except they don't work well for my 4-year-old because she's so short they end up dragging on the ground).

How can I start an online business selling backpacking goods?

I am looking to start a business that deals exclusively with backpacking gear: (backpacks, shells, tents, sleeping bags, emergency supplies, etc.). I am unsure if I should begin as a drop ship site or purchase the inventory initially. Ideally, I would spend around $10,000 to get this project off the ground. Anyone have suggestions?

Answer
I would agree with Scott. If you want to keep your costs down I would go with drop shipping just for the fact that you won't have to carry product and sit on it until you make your site visible to the search engines and the public at large. The one Scott mentioned is not the only place you can go to for this type of thing, at face value they seem to be decent, I have researched them before and they have a page rank of 5 which as a rule of thumb is the minimum rank in deciding whether to deal with a company like this. There is also a alexa rank which I have not checked out on them which will give you an idea of where they stand as far as popularity.

The thing is if you carry your own product you will want to have liability insurance in case you are sued for any reason (it happens so don't kid yourself) or you could form an LLC which is supposed to protect your personal assets from a suit. The only problem is that a recent supreme court ruling has left it a little nebulous as to whether a sole member LLC if afforded the same protection as a multi-member LLC. Why this has come about, who knows, I just know it is.

Do some research before you step in feet first.

Can state parks rent out handicap camping spots when full?

My father has said when he designed and worked with a few county parks that their policy was to rent out the handicap spots to non handicap party's when everything else was taken but the handicap spots.

I was wondering if that were true for state parks as well. Specifically Wisconsin state parks.

Answer
Contact the Wisconsin State Park of your interest to determine present policies. Often, there are over-flow camping areas as well as private campgrounds near the state parks. Depending on the location, there may also be dispersed camping or backpacking "walk-in" site opportunities if you are willing to "rough it." I have never had any problems finding a place to camp. You may also qualify for "group" campsites.

Devil's Lake State Park
S5975 Park Rd.
Baraboo, WI 53913-9299
608-356-8301

First-come, first-served campsites

You can identify first-come, first-served sites by going to the Wisconsin State Park System Camping Reservations website. First-come, first-served sites are shown as "Walk-up only" in campsite lists and "W" in availability tables.

Campers can reserve campsites at most Wisconsin state parks and forests. Some parks and forests do not accept reservations and have sites that are available only on a first-come, first-served basis. Check with the forest, park, or trail office for current availability. Due to unpredictable demand, we cannot guarantee that a site that's vacant when you call will still be available when you arrive. You can register for non-reservable family sites for up to 14 consecutive days.

Any reservable site that has not been reserved is also available to campers who arrive without a reservation. The maximum allowable stay will depend on the next date for which the site has been reserved.

All campsites at the following locations are first-come, first-served only:
â¢Brule River State Forest, 35 sites
â¢Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, three remote sites
â¢Elroy-Sparta State Trail, 20 hike-in or bike-in sites
â¢Flambeau River State Forest, 60 family sites, 34 canoe sites
â¢Governor Knowles State Forest, 30 family sites, 30 equestrian sites, four backpack sites
â¢Peshtigo River State Forest, 16 sites
â¢Tower Hill State Park, 15 sites

I'm looking for a nice place to go hiking for a few days. Looking for a unique area that is fishing accessible and that would have a waterfall. I live in Illinois and I'm looking to take a trip out of state but somewhere close like Wisconsin or Michigan. Any ideas would be helpful.

Have reached your 17th birthday by Sept 1 of your HS grad year
not have reached your 21st bday by June 30 of the year you begin participation in NROTC
Be physically qualified with the standards required for midshipmen
Be an Hs grad or possess an equivalent certificate
Plan to participate in no less tan 4 years in the program and meet all requitements for commisioning
Have no moral obligations or personal convictions that will prevent you conscientously bearing arms and supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic

If you qualify you will be eligble for NROTC scholarships in which most or all of your expenses will be paid for. If you don't recieve a scholarship you still recieve financial aid while you are in ROTC

I believe boot camp (aka basic training) is the summer of your second year in the program, its 13 weeks

Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops are a great place to look. the stuff they have is made for use in the outdoors and i do not know one person that would buy anything that is junk for anything to do with the outdoors. and yes, they have things in colors other than camouflage. here are a couple of links for an idea. be sure to check the bargain cave at Cabelas and the clearance section at Bass Pro. sometimes they have incredible deals.

What is essential in you dog hiking pack?

Amanda R

Me and my German Shepherd mix are going to take an overnight hiking trip. He and I have hiked before, but it's little 3 hour trips over the mountain in town, and I've made the hike we are taking tomorrow before, even when I was little so I trust the spot we are hiking for both of our skill levels. I have the basics packed: water, first aid kit, emergency supplies, etc. I also have basics packed for him: extra leash, treats, a hitch leash for tie out, a pocket dog first aid guide, poop bags, food and portable bowl. At least two of my bottles are wide mouthed with big lids that can turn into water bowls for the dog, I have a calorie-high energy paste for him, and heavy duty dog boots. His collar, harness, and backpack are all tagged with his name. My brother is coming along too, so there will be an extra back pack for supplies. (He is a sight to see. Everyone on our normal hike has heard of him, and some have even asked to take pictures because people will never believe them.) He is conditioned to wear his pack, and I packed it fairly light (not over 5 lbs, on a 70 lb dog) and there is space in my bag for his if it is too much.

But, this is a longer trip and much farther from home (and we are staying the night, hopefully at the camp site below so that we can get an early start. This is kind of a test trip for much longer, nicer hikes later on. Everything I have packed, most times, seems overkill, but I was always taught that is was better to have it and not need it to need it and not have it.

So, dog hikers/campers, what have you added to your packs that you have found invaluable? Any funny stories, or advice to give about our extended trip to give me warning of what to expect?

Answer
Here are some things that I think are a must if you're going on a trip like that with your dog.

A tube of EMT Gel http://emtgel.com/whatitis/index.php
I've known people who have had dogs get caught on wire, or something else sharp who have cut themselves so badly, that they would have bled to death before the owners could have gotten them to a vet. It stops bleeding like a dream, and is great for treating wounds as they heal.

A old tie, or a soft muzzle. If your dog gets hurt, they could go into shock, and bite, or could just bite because they don't want you to touch them where it hurts. Even the sweetest dogs can do this, I had one of mine nail my hand when I was trying to get their paw uncaught from a fence.
If you go with an old tie, here's how to tie a muzzle: http://books.google.com/books?id=W9QZ6AEjXVUC&pg=RA1-PA5&lpg=RA1-PA5&dq=tying+a+muzzle+with+an+old+tie+on+a+do+guide&source=bl&ots=4smjUTuKID&sig=T9pM-6Mjqc6KaYX7xEGbyH3nIyw&hl=en&ei=hOyKSuS-IpKQsgO1t-XDDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false

And then, I'm sure your first aid kit has the usual gauze, and such, though an old dish towel wouldn't hurt to bring in case you need something more absorbent.

I'd also recommend, if you have any experience with one, a skin stapler if you need to patch your dog up that much, but if you haven't used/seen one used many times before, it would be a bad idea, but otherwise they're nice to hold skin together until you get to a vet.

And yes, I am quite the pessimist. At least I'm prepared for the worst. XD

As we know school is getting ready start up soon. i have 4 children. one is a boy that is getting ready to enter middle school. i wish to surprise him with new cloths in the latest styles. i mean shoes, backpack, pant/jeans/shorts, and anything else that today's middle schools are wearing. I don't want to ask him, because i don't want him to know that i am surprising him.

can someone in the teen scene help me to surprise my son, thanks in advance.

Answer
Well do not surprise him with shoes because that's like a guys prized possession is picking out Jordan's lol but buy him things from Hollister or Abercrombie. Those are the 'cool' stores trust me. All popular kids generally wear clothes from there. It will give him a good start. It doesn't really matter about the backpack. And get skinny or slim straight jeans, not boot cut. and don't get him loose shirts. Tight ones are better,

How to be popular in High School?

Joseph

I'm in eighth grade, nearing the end of my school year. I'm going to a high school where very few people from my middle school are going. Currently, in middle school, I am semi-popular. So next year I'll be a freshman. Only four people from my middle school are going to the high school I'm going to go to. So what are some tips to be popular as a high school freshman?

Answer
dress nice, and make sure you're always with style. you're a guy so nike socks, snapbacks, jordans, vans, converse. you can buy all those clothes from zumiez.com and tillys.com. you have to have confidence and act like you do. don't take any crap from anyone and be chill, smile a lot, and make sure your teeth are white, and stay in shape. buy a cool backpack like jansport, and make sure the clothes you buy are the ones you like and feel comfortable in, so you can add your own style to it, but also be popular. shop online or if you have a mall in your city/town go there and pick up a lot of cool stuff. wear necklaces, but not too many at once, only one, and no gold or fake looking ones that are glittery/sparkly. if you don't have the best smile, like you have a gap or your teeth are crooked you can still smile, it doesn't matter as long as your teeth are white. have good grades, and wash your face to get rid of acne. on ur first day of highschool try to spot out some of the popular kids and go up to one of them if you have a class with them. be friendly and loyal and don't talk about anyone behind their back on the first day. try to get people's phone numbers, add them on kik, instagram, whatever u have and always be social and ALWAYS be in style. also, find a sport that you're good at, like football or basketball or swimming or track, and join the school's team; be the best at it. make sure everyone's always saying hey to you when you walk past them. good luck! (or just be yourself)

Looking for a good camera bag or backpack, has to be able to hold at least 3 lenses and two camera bodies as well as some other pockets for other camera goodies. Thanks!

Answer
Think tank and Gura Gear make the best camera bags.

Gura Gear is probably out of your price range, but you can by a Think Tank backpack such as a Streetwalker Pro for about the same price as most of the other backpacks. The Streetwalker Pro will hold the items you have:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OOKFJM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001OOKFJM&linkCode=as2&tag=boatprojcom-20

And here is a review of the Streetwalker Pro:

http://www.althephoto.com/gear/streetwalker.php

Kata also makes some very good backpacks.

Tamrac, Lowepro, and similar in my view are not as good - they have a tendency to fall apart after a couple of years of heavy use.

Domke bags are old-school - made in the USA, and traditionally have been good bags - and for a bag, they have a very loyal following - which is surprising for a bag. But they are not the best in my view. Some models lack much protection for your gear (some have no padding). They are also made with old-school materials such as canvas that may not be the best materials these days.

Here is a rather tongue-and-cheek video about the ruggedness of 4 different brand camera bags. To be sure, the extreme tests these characters do on the camera bags won't be anything you will probably ever encounter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0wLqStdXNw

When you look for a camera bag, look for those brands that offer a lifetime warranty (Gura Gear, Think Tank, Kata, etc). They are no more expensive than some of the other brands that only offer a 5yr or less guarantee.

Can anyone recommend a camera bag to use with the Canon Powershot S5 camera?

LDB_Career

I am looking at the LowePro Edit 110 ($21 at Best Buy) as a possibility. I like Velcro fasteners as opposed to zippers for easier access.

Any answers from personal experience with this camera (and bags) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Tamrac also makes an excellent bag. The Aug. 2007 issue of Shutterbug magazine had a review on camera backpacks. Might be an option to consider. You can read it at shutterbug.com.

I have a short upper body, so I think this might be the reason. I weigh 110 pounds and probably have a 15 pound backpack, what do you think?

Answer
Jane Sadler, a physician at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas, said children's growth plates could be affected by undue stress. This would not stunt growth but may cause the early onset of arthritis in later life.

The experts recommended investing in relatively light backpacks, which place the weight on the shoulders, and with adjustable straps to prevent heavy loads from moving or being slung lower down the back.

Sorry buddy, sometimes genetics just suck.

Are there any exercises I can do to prevent further curvature of the spine?

StellaBthe

I'm in my early to mid-twenties now, but when I was a child, a doctor told me I had a mild form of scoliosis. Never did anything about it and was just told to avoid overdoing the carrying of heavy bags, etc. Looking at it from a mirror, I feel as though the curvature has gotten somewhat worse. It doesn't bother me physically in any way, but should I be concerned? I'm a student, and carrying heavy bags is inevitable now and then, although I'll try to be better about it. Any tips?

Answer
a check up is in order In general lifting weights carefully strengthens your spine but you may need special instructions if you have scoliosis-perhaps a new eval would tell you how it is today compared to the childhood version. Ask about your exercise routine and if you have any limitations If any painful movements report them vefore you go forward.Look in to the wheeled laptop/backpack carriers Most people use them these days. Minimize what you carry to school day to day. See about yoga and or pilates to strengthen the abdominal core that works to support the back as well Don t be overweight-dont starve yourself but work towards a healthy weight at all times.Wear sturdy supportive shoes like Birkenstocks or Danskos etc(Im not advertising any particular brand) Avoid flimsy shoes like flipflops and high heels

What are some tips for starting middle school?

Im a gurl and im ll and i need tips

Answer
Self confidence! That's what you need. When you start middle school make sure to start talking to people. Make a good impression, smile, ask for their names, and do small talk. Nice to say their name after a conversation such as before you leave "it was nice talking to you Anna, bye" then smile. Remember don't talk bad about yourself, and don't talk too much about yourself. Let them talk too and be a good listener. Really I can't stress it, try not to be shy.

Once you start talking to those people that you like, stick with them for lunch and look for them in the morning before school starts to hang out. Always hang out with at least one person and make sure to go form a bigger group. Don't be alone or people can start picking on you.

When making friends, give them eye contact and show them you have confidence. Look them in the eyes but don't stare. Also never look down at the ground or your shoes most likely people will start to look down on you. Remember people love nice and friendly people. Just talk.

Also!
Clothing wise: Main stores to go to----> Old Navy! (Uniforms) and Tilly's. Check google for their the store location nearest you.

Wear nice clothing. Get your mom or parents to buy you clothing for middle school. It's called investment, you know. Okay buy 2-3 white shirts that fits you perfectly and fits your body not the kind of material shirt that the boys wear. Also get 2-3 cardigans and jackets, you can look around H&M, Forever 21, Gap, Walmart, Target...and at least two pairs of Dickie pants, make sure you get that. 2-3 pairs of good-looking shoes such as the brands converse chucks, or vans. Get a nice backpack maybe a jansport. Almost forgot, for PE you need PE shoes try Nike or Adidas brand.

Hygiene
Make sure to shampoo and conditioner your hair very nicely. If you don't have a hair straightener, get your mom to buy you one and have her straighten your hair everyday or every other day.
Don't be cheap.
VERY IMPORTANT Sunscreen that is one of your best friends. You must apply that everyday diligently. It protects you from the sun's harmful uv rays that can turn you older faster. The sun can make you have wrinkles all over your face and you can get dark sun spots, patches of dark that can make your body, skin, face uneven. Ah....it can also cause cancer, bad for your health. Make sure to have it on handy and put it in your PE locker as well.

Body lotion: it keeps your skin moisturized and feeling soft.
Chapstick: Get one of these even better if it has spf, you want to protect your lips as well.

Do you wear a bra? If not you can get your mom to bring you to a bra or lingerie store and have a female store representative, fit your size. Don't attempt it yourself or wear your mother's bra, it can change the shape of your bust, and that's not going to be pretty.

Ultimately, be yourself, you're on the period where you're growing, and your parents need to meet most of your needs. You're a healthy growing girl you know.

Ah...it also may be good to get along with teachers, do your homework, and maybe even join a sport or physical activity like swimming well if the school provides those programs and classes for you.

*If your mom won't do these things for you, go straight to your dad immediately for help and plead with him.*

I wished someone had told me these things earlier. Now I'm in college, but I survived.

You must take control over your life, you have bigger responsibilites now. Make this middle school time the best time you can ever have where after you graduate from middle school, you can tell others about your happy memories then and not regret. Because you are young and you should have the best. Best wishes and congratulations for your move up to Middle School!

I am very much of a "Tom Boy." How can I become more "girly" without feeling uncomfortable?

bear

My style is very casual and comfy for me. The typical T-Shirt and jeans kinda girl. I love being comfy in my own clothes, but all my girlfriends are way more girly than i am. When I look at myself I feel like I'm too "manly" in what i wear. I want to be more girly, but I just don't feel comfortable in all those girly clothes. What can I do to be more girly??

Answer
hey. you don't wanna become girly all of a sudden, so just gradually add girly stuff to your outfit. but please make sure you like it, otherwise it will only look awkward on you.

first try wearing a cute necklace. it doesn't have to be full on pepto-bismol pink =]
http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/Accessories/Jewelry/Black-Heart-Necklace-149022.jsp

start from wearing t-shirts, to v-necks

i used to be a tom boy too. a lot of people begin growing out of that stage in middle school. its really all about transition. you can't suddenly go from tom boy to glam girl without people noticing and being uncomfortable. wear what you like, and jeans are always perfect. they're still my fav =]

i hope i helped

What are some important things to bring camping?

Me and my friend(s?) are planning a camping trip, and plan to leave in july. At the moment, we are saveing money and planning what we all need to bring...The small things, and the obvious things would be apriciated in your sugestions

Answer
My top 10 list of basics for car camping:
1. Rain gear: coated nylon poncho or waterproof/breathable jacket and pants.
2. Tent, plastic ground sheet, stakes, mallet
3. Mummy bag (rated to minimum temp expected)
4. Foam sleeping pad(s) or insulated inflatable pad (Thermarest)
5. Camp stove, lighter, utensils, knife, cups, plates, can opener, paper towels, etc.
6. Cooler, full of ice and perishable food, drinks
7. Bug spray, with DEET
http://www.rei.com/product/730353
8. Sunscreen, hat
9. First Aid Kit
10. Flashlight, spare batteries, gas lantern, gas

Just remember, for first timers it's better to borrow or rent equipment than buy brand new if at all possible, because it'll be a learning experience, and you may either not like it at all, or discover how little you really need to be comfortable, or decide you want a lot more comfort, or decide to try backpacking in the wilderness.

where is a website where I can buy backpacks for college student use?

howie

I want to lessen my load as much as I can. It could be just 2 pocketed. I had a blue eastport backpack like that. It was very simple simple in terms of pockets.

Currently, I use a very durable, but slightly heavy, and many pocketed backpack of the brand called trans.

I am tired of carrying so much weight. I am a full-time student and it adds on to my stress.

Do you have any tips for a beginner winter camper?

camping backpack checklist

I would like to try winter camping. I have been summer camping quite a bit but mostly just at campgrounds. There is a campground about an hour away that has year round camping so I was thinking about trying it for a weekend. What tips to you have for a beginner winter camper, who has intermediate summer camping experience? What gear would I need? This is what I was thinking.
4 Season tent
Winter sleeping bag
Snow shoes
Warm winter clothes
What am I missing? Any additional tips?

Answer
tons of info on the web, here is the most intensive one I have found and refer to the most.
http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/winter/wintcamp.shtml

As for your list of gear some of that partly depends on where you are. Winter camping in the desert you won't need snow shoes but all the rest of those items yes you will. For a beginner I recommend starting out by renting a cabin in a wilderness area that way you have options to retreat too should plans go awry.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/recreation/rec_rentals.html

Tents are the main place to retreat to and a four season is the best to use, size is also very important. if you have 2 go with a 3-4 man, 4 go with a 6 man and so on. You need to have room for the gear to stash out of the weather. Include a tarp to use for rain shelter and wind breaks, not all winter camping has snowy weather. Coleman makes one of the best winter tents on the market, Exponent Northstar X6 Tent
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00697792000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4&isABTestAvl=true

Clothing is critical and dress in layers, avoid cotton here is a great article telling you how and what to look for,
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/dress+layers.html

As for winter sleeping bags, definitely go with a well known product rated for zero degrees or colder. Down filled bags ounce for ounce keep you the warmest however and this is very important when they get wet they become useless hypothermia freezers. I consider the weight factor and survival factor and choose the synthetic over down every time. Here is my choice,
http://www.rei.com/product/778929/marmot-trestles-0-sleeping-bag

Always use a check list so you don't forget gear and here is a good one,
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/backpacking+checklist.html

How much money do you need and what to prepare for backpacking on foot per years?

ButterMilk

Is the money brought in cash or in credit card? but some rural countries might not accept it. Do you sleep in motel or tents? Do you eat cooked food or take away? Where can I find more info on backpacking?

Answer
Take both cash and credit card.
Camp at campgrounds or dispersed camping.

Does anyone know what words have an "A" handshape in ASL?

Adam

I need a list of words that use the "A" handshape in ASL. I need a total of 15 words, but any amount will due. Obviously the user who gives me the most words will be chosen as the best answer.

Answer
This is a lot more challenging than most people realize-- if it is, in fact, bonafide ASL that you are using. (Avoiding all of the counterfeit pidgin approaches, like "signed English" [SE] and S.E.E., which corrupt with the addition of prolific initializing. [Among other things.])

* Unlike English, ASL is not standardized, so there is a lot of room for conjecture
* not everyone agrees when an "A", an "open A", or an "S" is used or should be used
* Signs will vary according to geographic, academic, social, and religious "regions"
* there are pockets of idiolects dictated by schools, instructors, media, families, et caetera
* whatever is not sanctioned by the majourity of your local Deaf adults cannot be used
* unnecessary initializing is prohibited by Deaf Culture
* glosses routinely use handshapes unrelated to the first letter of the word (YEAR uses "S")
* when a handshape matches the first letter of the word, it is often purely coincidental
* Signs are rarely listed by handshape; it requires skill to find handshapes in a dictionary

Here are a few simple glosses for you to consider:

debatable:
CHANGE
ASTHMA (some consider this S.E.E.)
APPOINTMENT (in some regions)
DENTIST (in some regions)

♂ What would you make 6 boys using these names?

school backpacks for teenage girls australia image

Vanill

These are my favorite boy names.

Adam, Alexander, Andrew, Benjamin, Bradley, Christopher, Connor, Evan, Gregory, Jack, Jacob, James, Jared, Jason, John, Jonathan, Joseph, Joshua, Kendall, Kenneth, Kevin, Logan, Matthew, Michael, Nathaniel, Robert, Samuel, Scott, Sean, William, Zachary.

For a better chance at best answer, describe each of the boys. You can tell me their ages, birthdays, appearances, personalities, habits, hobbies, pretty much anything you want about them. Have fun. =)
The question is supposed to read: "What would you name 6 boys using these names?"

Answer
Bradley Kenneth
Connor Benjamin
Evan Gregory
Jack Robert
Scott Kevin
Zachary William

Bradley is the eldest. Broad shouldered blonde hair blue eyed guy. He is playful and mischievous. He grows up to become a commercial fisherman and take over the family business. He married a Filipino woman named Soleta and they have three sons - Marcos and twins, Nico and Levi.

Connor Benjamin is a tall, but skinny guy. Thick, dark hair, and dark eyes. He is very artistic and decides to become a vegetarian. He makes his living as a singer and dancer in musicals like 'Chicago'. He is very intelligent and somewhat mysterious.

Evan Gregory is tall and always keeps himself very toned. He tans easily, despite his sandy brown hair and blue eyes. He' has a goofy sense of humor and loves all kinds of boarding - long boarding, skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding. After high school he spends a year backpacking in Australia where he meets a Polish actress. He brings her back home to get married and he is happy being a construction worker.

Jack Robert moves to England after high school to train with the Royal Shakespeare Company and pursue his love of acting. He marries a British girl there and they have one son. Jack is blonde and average height and is very round in stature.

Tall and skinny blonde hair blue eyed Scott Kevin loves to laugh. He spends his teenage years working at fast food places and not taking life very seriously. He doesn't do well in school, though all of his teachers loved him. He eventually drops out. One drunken night he sleeps with a girl and she gets pregnant. He smartens his life up, takes a course in computer programming to become a technician and raises his little girl, Olivia Ray, as a single dad. He plays basketball in his spare time.

Zachary William has brown hair and brown eyes. He is a thin guy, but is very short. He is goofy and charismatic and from a very young age, it was clear that he had magnificent talent as a dancer. He traveled the world doing hip hop performances and became quite famous.

How do I explain my dad about the camping trip information?

HeyI'mZ

So yeah, I need your help so PLEASE DON'T IGNORE IT AND PLEASE ANSWER THIS.
Okay,Im 15 and this is the first time Im ever going to a trip. Like,Ive never even had a sleepover cause my dad is kinda strict.
Anyway, this year we're going to a hill station to camp(only the girls + teachers in my class).
It is being organized by a famous trip organizer and after a little convincing( to my amazenent) my dad agreed.
So its a 5 day stay tour and We'll leave on 29 september and return on 5th of october.
However,my mum suggested me to simply tell dad that we'll go for just 5 days and not get into details but I THINK my dad assumed that we're going for 5 days(Including departure and arrival).

If I explain him now, that its a total 7 days,I fear (and Im kinda sure) he'll say no.
And I REALLY REALLY want to go.Ive never been anywhere and ALL the girls are going.I'm a good child and the topper of my class too.

But I 'm scared that if I tell him later he's gonna get really mad cause He'll think I lied to him and even though the amount will be paid he'll stop me from going. We're rich so he doesnt care about the money a lot.

We're going by a luxury Ist class bus so it is kinda safe?

So- should I tell him now?
He might get mad and stop me? Or should I wait for him to ask? or should I be cool and tell him that this is what I was told? (What if he enquires the school about it?)
Oh and we'll leave post lunch on 29th(Soshould that day be included) and we havent been informed about the arrival yet.

Im worried. Please help?

Answer
Stay calm. Heads think better that way. Your folks ought to get a letter from the school explaining all about the trip.
Meanwhile, less is best. Less information, less to go wrong.
The bus will be safe, no worries. You only hear about bus trips that go wrong, not the thousand other trips that had no news for people to worry over.
Include the going away day as a day although it's really half a day but have a word at the school about information letters to parents. It might say something like five full days plus two half days.
There's a bit of time to go yet, no sweat. Just keep cool and low profile about it.

It's understandable some folks being strict cuz there's a lot of bad people in the world but our family has been fortunate that my wife and I met on a walking trip in the hills one Easter and our girls all grew up with the outdoor life.
They were camping on mountains before they could walk. Some of their first steps were on Alpine rock.
One of them went to Camp America to teach outdoor stuff, trekking, rock climbing, cross country navigating, kayaking, and she's a qualified archery instructor too.
The kids thought she was a genius haha!! It's just how she grew up and we were lucky enough to be in places where we could do all that stuff.
When she asked about going backpacking for a few months I was happy she wanted to do it by herself.
One part of the trip she got a lift working on a schooner going from Australia to the Cook Islands in the Pacific ocean and made links between their schools and ours. We live on an island too.
I've been to five continents and I still travel. There are hundreds of teenage girls backpacking in Africa any day of the year, even in places some men would be worried about.
There are hundreds more in Asia and in South America. Backpacker hostels are big business now.
Have fun at the camp and don't spoil it before you go by worrying about it. Just keep everything smooth and cool. You've got loads of time to get ready for it.
Best of luck.

wow i didnt even think abt writing his name in the jackets good suggestion!!

Answer
My son is starting Kindergarten this fall and I love to shop! I'm in Wisconsin so he doesn't need any shorts because it will be cold here by September but if you're in a warmer area then I'd buy a few pairs with elastic waists so he doesn't have to worry about buttons, snaps and zippers. That's the main thing to focus on with school clothes- practicality! We don't want them to have to constantly ask the teacher for help when there are 20 kids in the class. I've actually already bought most of his clothes- I buy everything at the end of the season on clearance for the next year. So far he has...

8 pairs activewear pants & matching long-sleeved shirts from Gymboree, like these- http://www.gymboree.com/shop/dept_category.jsp?productSizeSelected=0&pageClicked=0&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374305611191&bmUID=1217005425152 These are my favorite because they're cute, comfortable & easy for him to put on/take off.

4 pairs of athletic pants in different colors with 4 athletic tops to match from K-mart.

2 pairs of casual cargo/climber pants -like these http://www.landsend.com/pp/OpenBottomCargoClimberPants~146357_1188.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::VNO&CM_MERCH=IDX_00003__0000000328&origin=index

4 pairs of jeans
3 hooded sweatshirts
10 or so random long-sleeved shirts
4 sweaters
1 pair of tennis shoes

I still need to get him new socks and I'll probably buy about 10 pairs. I'm not buying new underwear because there's nothing wrong with his old ones and no one sees them anyway. I'm also not buying any new short sleeved t-shirts because the ones he's been wearing all summer look new still. I'll buy him one more pair of tennis shoes- with velcro instead of laces so he can do them himself. I still have to get a backpack too and if you buy one at Toys R Us for 12.99 or more you get a free lunch bag so I'm probably going there. I agree that you should label everything and even then you might lose things but it will help. I would skip the sandals because they aren't good for playing on the playground. A lot of schools will even specify that kids DON'T wear them. Good Luck! =]

5 year old going into kindergarten how much should I spend on clothes?

Amanda

My daughter is going to be starting school in August and I plan to take her school shopping next week and spend about $200 on clothes. We already bought her backpack and lunch bag so it would be only for shoes and clothes. How much do you spend and buy and how old are your kids?

Thanks for answering my question! I'm just curious this is my first baby so I have no clue
Thank you lorelei I was actually concerned that $200 would not be enough. Its not that I want to be excessive but I would like my daughter to look decent and have enough of everything. I know clothes at her age get destroyed pretty quickly which is why I feel its necessary to get her alot.

Answer
wow...I asked a similar question about my 18 month old a few weeks ago and got alot of the same answers...I personally will shop at thrift stores and second hand stores but the clothes must have tags on them and not been worn or be so cute it dose not matter...I have found good deals at The Children's Place and Carters. I also like Sears, Jcpenny and Gymboree (for sales). I think $200 is very reasonable if she needs everything! I would however look into outlet shopping near you. I went the The Children's place outlet and got her jeans for like $5.00 brand new! For shoes I like Walmart or target...I would also be sure to get an old T-shirt for her to wear when she dose painting in school...even if the paint say "washable" it dose stain sometimes...I also would deam and few things as "fancy" clothes like for church or her first day of school! Good luck!!

P.S I plan on spending $300-$500 on my 18 month old Fall/winter entire wardrobe!!

What's the best way to review for the AP European exam for a duration of a week?

aldrina52

Whats the best way to review the information? What about the essays? Whats the key to doing great in DBQs and FRQs? I know a week is short, but i've been studying for weeks and I just can't seem to plant the information in my head. Any suggestions? Please! Any trick would help. I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

Answer
There isn't really a way to study for history, especially AP European History (I literally almost died in that class!) Flashcards don't seem to help, and the textbook is just.... The textbook. I only read half a chapter out of the entire textbook for the whole year! My friend too the AP Exam for European History and managed to get a 3 without studying and reading only 1 chapter out of that stupid textbook. The only way I see getting a good score is to practice writing those DBQ's and FRQ's. Look for the released questions on the College Board website so you can get a good idea of what might be asked on the test. Then, pick one or two topics and just write. I'm sure there are example essays attached to these different questions, so compare your essay to the one online and see if there are any similarities. Of course, you need to time yourself and make sure you include as much info as you can!

A summary of AP EUROPEAN HISTORY:
A class that is a huge pain in the ass. It drains the life and pride out of all smart and dumbshit students alike. The teacher assigns tests and quizzes weekly just to fuck your grade. The AP exam is like satans asshole. Theres no escape and you end up shitting yourself because you dont know any answers. An incredible workout too. Youll probably lose 5 inches from your height just lugging around 5 jumbo textbooks the size of chinese phonebooks in your backpack. Impossible to get an A in and you have to study 10+ hours to get a B. Don't take this class. youll end up either killing yourself or killing the teacher

Tote vs. Backpack for High School?

OmgItsHayl

I'm going to be a freshman (yes, isn't everyone, haha) and I was wondering if I should get a tote for a backpack or not. I'm in the advanced classes, so I think I'm going to have alot of books to carry considering the lockers are super tiny. In 6th & 7th grade I carried a tote, but that's because I didn't have a locker at the junior high I went to. I moved schools in 8th grade, where I did have a locker. But I just carried around a binder. Since I ride the bus with high schoolers, most of the girl's were carrying around backpacks. I already bought a backpack, but I can always just go to school and see what I see most people doing. Please answer!

Answer
First of all, congrats on being a freshman :) it's actually an amazing year, so much more freedom, and the older kids are usually super nice!

I was in the exaaaaaaaact same dilemma, and I actually carried around a tote for my first few months..
WRONG choice, for me.
especially since you are taking advanced classes, the tote will actually hurt your shoulder and it looks kind of silly if it's too bulky and you are walking around with it with massive books inside. it honestly doesn't even look that much better than a knapsack, anyways, and a backpack has tons more support, and if you can find a pretty one, they can look more styling anyways ;)
so that's what i would recommend, from experience .
also, the younger grades are usually the ones that use totes, anyways.. by the time you are done your freshman year , or before, many people just give up on the tote, because it's unrealisitic for the later years anyways.
some good (and pretty) backpacks you can find are at macy's, pacsun, west 49, and they are names such as Roxy, Hurley, brands like that
and you can find them for around $30, and they will last a couple years.

However, i am not bashing totes at all, because there are some really nice ones, but honestly, it's unrealistic to be carrying around all day ):

it's your choice though, good luck with whatever you decide & i hope you make the right deicison for YOU :)
