I need a list of words that use the "A" handshape in ASL. I need a total of 15 words, but any amount will due. Obviously the user who gives me the most words will be chosen as the best answer.
Answer
This is a lot more challenging than most people realize-- if it is, in fact, bonafide ASL that you are using. (Avoiding all of the counterfeit pidgin approaches, like "signed English" [SE] and S.E.E., which corrupt with the addition of prolific initializing. [Among other things.])
* Unlike English, ASL is not standardized, so there is a lot of room for conjecture
* not everyone agrees when an "A", an "open A", or an "S" is used or should be used
* Signs will vary according to geographic, academic, social, and religious "regions"
* there are pockets of idiolects dictated by schools, instructors, media, families, et caetera
* whatever is not sanctioned by the majourity of your local Deaf adults cannot be used
* unnecessary initializing is prohibited by Deaf Culture
* glosses routinely use handshapes unrelated to the first letter of the word (YEAR uses "S")
* when a handshape matches the first letter of the word, it is often purely coincidental
* Signs are rarely listed by handshape; it requires skill to find handshapes in a dictionary
Here are a few simple glosses for you to consider:
