Getting started hiking and backpacking?

So i want to start hiking and backpacking. Im 15 years old and want to get started with it. I have hiked a few times before just during the day but love it. Im in the eastern PA area. Im looking for gear i need and it is totaling up to be alot. I need to know what gear i need, how to get involved, any groups that i could join, ect . Thank you

Answer
The first thing I would do is establish my "no matter what" kit. These are the things I take with me regardless of where i go in the woods.
Simple compus
Sturdy knife
Fire starter ( magnisim and flint)
Fish line and hooks
Emergency blanket
These items can be found at any army navy store or camping equipment outlet. You want them to all be small but reliable as your going to want to be able to count on them in the worst case senereo.
After that I would pick your bag. Possibly the most important and least considered part of your gear, your pack should most of all be comfy and easy to take off quick (most bags have simple clips on the straps that work fine). Another thing to think of is size. I've found that the bigger bag I have the more stuff I bring and the more exhausted I get. A bag that fits you tent sleep system and some food with a little room left is perfect. Old army rucks are normally great to start with.
Next I always seam to bring with me my jet boil ($100 at most outfitters) a spoon and a hammock. You will undoubtedly find bits of kit that you love and hate and nothing sucks more then paying big bucks for something you can't stand, I get around this by buying a cheap piece of gear I'm not sure of, trying it for a trip and then spending good money on one that will last and I know exactly what I want from it.

As for joining groups I would ask around local outfitting stores. Have fun and always bring a camera.

Any good wilderness camping sites in NJ or PA?

joe k

I live in the NJ/PA area and am in search of a new wilderness camping area. In south jersey, Wharton State Forest offers some of the only sites where you actually have to hike/canoe 1-3 miles to get to the campsite. This is a nice woodsy area but lacks a good swimming lake (great for woodsy day hikes while camping though). North of Trenton is Round Valley Reservoir - my favorite so far. A 3-5 mile hike or slightly shorter canoe and you almost feel completely alone with a whole lake to yourself.

I am in search of another campsite in the NJ/PA area that requires a hike (helps to weed out some of the "cheaters"... ie. little kids... and increases the "away from civilization" feeling) but also leaves you with a nice view or nice place to swim and feel alone for a couple of days/nights. Preferably, I would prefer to have a campsite that is not immediately next to another and is at least somewhat away from civilization.

Anything in the Eastern PA/NJ area?
Does anybody know of a good place along the Appalachian Trail in the PA/NJ area where a good 2-3 day camping trip can take place? Having a campfire is a major part of camping but I have heard that they are only allowed in certain areas on the AT. Ideally, I'd like to find an area within a 1-4 mile hike to leave the tent for a couple of nights where a fire can be built.

Answer
The only WILDERNESS areas in PA are in the Allegheny National Forest. There is also the Great Swamp NWR and Brigantine Wilderness, also managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

There are several Natural and Wild areas in the Delaware State Forest (PA) but most of them are off limits for camping. You can check the state bureau of forestry website for more info. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/stateforests/index.aspx

There are plenty of good backpacking trails in Eastern PA, but none of them are in a Wilderness area. Better opportunities for remote camping and backpacking exist in the central part of the state. There is the Old Loggers Path and the Loyalsock Trail as well a World's End State Park. Most of the state parks and trails such as The Horseshoe Trail and Thunder Swamp can be very congested due to their closeness to the Philly/NJ border. In short, don't count on finding anything remote east of the Susquehanna River. Hickory Run, Promised Land, Beltzville, and Rickett's Glen State Parks are usually very crowded during peak camping season.

Similarly, the AT in Pennsylvania largely crosses state game lands (no camping at all), state forest lands (usually no fires), private lands, and easements given to the ATC/NPS by private individuals. Due to relocations and weather conditions, fire restrictions change often. The current AT Guidebook for PA will give fairly accurate info, but you could hike in 7 miles to a campsite or shelter only to find that the property owners or the state has posted a fire restriction. The section from PA-183 to Swatara Gap is fairly remote. I've hiked it several times and usually only run into a handful of other hikers. The only places I've ever found crowded are the areas inside the Delaware Water Gap and around the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, but I've hiked the entire state several times and can honestly say I've never had the feeling of remoteness. You can almost always see lights from towns and on quiet nights can hear cars and noise from down in the valleys.

If you want to find a good swimming hole check here:
http://www.swimmingholes.org
Some places listed there have camping areas.

Personally, I'd head up to the Adirondacks or Vermont. There are many more remote areas to camp and lots of great swimming holes. So save up a few more PTO or Vacation days and spend a few more hours in the car. It's worth it.

I'm looking to go camping with a group of about 10 people in early March, as part of a spring break trip. We try to go camping somewhere in the Southern US so it's a reasonable temperature. I'm looking for suggestions of places by anyone who may have an idea of a place that fits these requirements. It's a week long trip, and some of the activities we have done in the past include backpacking, canoeing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, etc.. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks.

Answer
Check out Tennessee State Parks, Great Smokey mountains National Park and Big South Fork on the TN/KY border. All have everything but the sea kayaking..............

What's the average price for a trip to Europe?

Mike

I plan on going to Europe for a little mini tour by myself in the summer of 2014 and making stops in Denmark, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. So how much would this cost as an average figure? And what are ways to reduce the costs?

Answer
People who backpack around Europe generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget. However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel. Prices really depend on exactly where you go and when, how you get around. Prices for 2014 aren't available yet, but you can expect them to be a bit more.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point. Tuscany is an entire region, not a town. The most convenient airports to fly into will be Pisa or Florence, but Rome or Bologna are also reasonable options.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you. Palermo is a long trip by train, Naples to Palermo is one leg of the trip where you might consider flying.

http://www.seat61.com/ . This includes a huge amount of information on train travel throughout Europe - much more than there is room for in an answer here. The site has links to the various national train websites where you can find schedules and prices for trains. It also includes detailed descriptions of railpasses. This will tell you how to determine whether a railpass is worth the money for your trip (in Italy where I live railpasses are almost never worth the cost), which railpass to get, and how to use the railpass. There's also information on what to avoid in particular places.

Driving can be expensive; fuel prices, tolls and parking all add up, but it can become cost effective for groups. You can check sites like Avis, Europcar, Sixt, etc, for your specific rental cost. Picking up in one country and dropping off in another can be very expensive. You can get driving distances and estimates fuel and toll costs on viamichelin: http://www.viamichelin.com/ .
.
http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Shopping depends entirely on you.

Does the United Kingdom use the same batteries as the US?

WishIwereE

A friend and I want to backpack/hitchhike the UK this summer, but we are both girls so we need to be able to shave our legs and stuff when we might be camping out and don't have access to a shower.. so our idea was to get a battery powered electric razor in the US, (is that legal to bring carry on on a plane?) and refill it with AA batteries when needed.. but does the United Kingdom use the same batteries as the US?

Answer
Yes you can find AA or AAA batteries easily in the UK at supermarkets or pharmacies like Boots. You can take the electric razors on a plane (with batteries taken out) but I'd recommend to put them in checked in baggage, NOT cabin baggage/handbag.

If you bring your cell phone, don't forget you'll need an adaptor for your phone charger (google 'USA to UK Plug Travel Adaptor', I've seen a few of them at BestBuy). Good luck & have fun! :)

Can I Go Camping In Places Other than Campgrounds In Ct?

I want to go camping with a friend of mine in Groton. We want to go to these woods that people sometimes hike in. Would this be illegal? if it is illegal then why is it? What ever happened to going out into the woods to camp? And all of the campgrounds are these public places with no privacy that you drive to -__- NOT REAL CAMPING.

Answer
You would need to know who owns the land. If the land belongs to a person who pays taxes on the land, then you would be trespassing unless you seek and obtain permission to violate the land. If the land is public land, then regulations may allow you to use the land as a place of dispersed camping. However, you still need to know who has jurisdiction over the land. Your county register-of-deeds office has maps that indicate the ownership of all lands in your area.

Is there any secluded camping in CT?

Alex Knowl

Looking for somewhere to go camping with my girlfriend in the CT area (rhode island maybe) that is secluded from other campsites so we can have some privacy and alcohol permitted would be nice but not needed. Just hate going camping and having someone right next to you with no privacy so anywhere secluded in the CT and RI area would be great.

Answer
Connecticut does not have any national forest lands. Try backpacking on the Appalachian Trail.

I want to know the pros and cons of eno hammocks and hammock bliss. Which is best?

Answer
I haven't used either of them but from what I have heard, read and seen people use, the Bliss is more popular out of the two.
I've tried the hammock thing but it's just not for me. I like sleeping on something more firm and I'm a side sleeper who moves around a lot. I find sleeping on a pad in a tent to be a more comfortable option for me.
Backpacking with a hammock can be a bit of a pain as well. First you need two trees or points to hang the hammock and that can limit you. Second, if you need to set up for the rain it's more work. You need to have a tarp set up to cook, store your pack/gear and just hand out in when it rains. You don't want to be stuck for who knows how long in a hammock laying there until the weather clears. And I always imagined having a bear or another animal coming up to your hammock while your sleeping. I don't think that would be fun.
Some people love them, swear by them, and others just don't. I don't. But we sometimes bring a small, light weight hammock just for lounging at base camp. That's all good.

How much do I need to spend on a hiking/backpacking setup for the AT?!?!?

If you have, where did you go? What did you do? How was it? What did you pack? How did you record your memories (still camera, video, diary, etc)? Do you have any tips for someone preparing to go?

I am going on an 8 day trek in southern Spain. I am SOO excited!

Answer
I went to a horseback riding summer camp, and have also done some day trips. Wear jeans and boots with a heel. I also suggest layering your top, so wear a short sleeve shirt and a light sweater and jacket that you can remove if warm.

Our camera was too difficult to use taking photos on horseback -- bring a simple point and shoot, or an easy to use video camera.

Put your camera, water bottle, and whatever else you need into a small backpack that you can wear while riding.

Not on horseback, but we visited Barcelona, Seville, Granada, and Cordoba. We loved, loved, loved it.

Have fun!!

What should I take with me on my ultimate adventure?

just

This summer I plan to go on a trip across the state of colorado. Using the national forest I plan to hike from Rio grande forest, on the border of new mexico, to the Roosevelt forest, to the Wyoming border. All of the trip will be through mountains. What should take, It has to be able to fit in a backpack. I want to keep electonics to minimum except a video camera, and I am debating a lighter. What should I take?

Answer
Well a couple of friends would be a good idea. Bring one set of waterproof(goretex pack lites) clothes. One pair of waterproof boots with ankle support. One set of thermal clothes, with an extra fleece. A sleeping bag. A survival bag, thermal blanket, whistle, and first aid kit. Some wash gear. A few, like five or six pairs of underwear and socks, prefferably not cotton. A couple of sports microfibre towles. A sleeping bag(it can be low tog if it's summer). Compass, map case, lighter, light my fire flint and striker. A lot of water, a water filter and some sterilisation tablets for if you need to drink river water or something. A load of dehydrated food. A block of marzipan(for if you run out of food and need energy as a last resort). A torch, head torch is best. A few toilet rolls, rob one from a bus station or college cause they are the most densly packed. A tent, a ground mat(therma rest are the best cause they're the most comfy, keep you warm and pack nice and small). Camping stove and enough gas. A mobile phone. Some strong waterproof tape incase you get any tears in your bag or anything. If a fog horn would be a good idea if there's going to be bears. Some black plastick sacks, one to line your back pack to make sure your stuff stays dry. A knife, sharp and with a sheath or folding capability. Insect repellant. Shots for mosquitos or whatever else might be in the area. A pack of cards. A few nylon or polyester tshirts and shorts.

Brandon B

I'm looking to do a weekend backpacking trip in the Ventana Wildeness. I'd like to find a scenic trail (maybe 5 miles one way) and nice place to camp. I'm not looking for a crowded, overused campground. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
The Pine Ridge Trail provides visitors to the Big Sur Valley with one of the most popular portals into the Ventana Wilderness. The recently opened trailhead at the Big Sur Station has excellent parking, plenty of water, and clean restrooms. The Nature Station Store, which is located at the Big Sur Station, provides hikers with maps and other literature associated with the natural history of the Big Sur region.

Need advice on where to go camping only 3 hours from modesto?

Amber

Hi I am trying to decide where i want to go camping. I want a more environmental or primitive spot not close to too many ppl. I am going in november so it cant be a place to cold. I have three places in mind but not sure which one to go to they also need to allow campfires.

So the places im thinking are Yosimete, big sur or Stanislaus National Forest or if there are other places you can think of.

thank you

Answer
Contact the Groveland Forest Service Office, 209-962-7825, ask about Spinning Wheel Campground. It's a primitive camp area along the Middle Fork of the Toulumne River off Highway 120 about 12 miles east of Groveland at 3,000 ft. elevation. It's uncommon to see anyone there during the off season, even on the week-ends. There aren't any places to camp in Yosemite away from people unless you backpack.

For information about backpacking destinations contact me at casey.cox53@gmail.com I live just outside of Yosemite and backpack extensively throughout the Hoover Wilderness, Emigrant Wilderness, and Yosemite Wilderness.

Hi, can anyone advise me on any particular features to look for when choosing a backpack / rucksack. I won't be carrying camping stuff / bedding. Will probably be in hot and cold parts of Asia.

Thank you!

Answer
Make sure the backpack is water-proof and well insulated. It is really important that it has a pocket for a water bottle. Make sure the straps have some padding if you are going to be carrying it around a fair amount.

*And as an added tip for the contents, make sure you always carry a role of toilet paper and a bottle of Purel with you wherever you go.

and, i'm flying domestically first with delta airlines to Washington Dulles. is it ok to bring a carry-on suitcase and a backpack?

answers needed ASAP. thanks a bunch!

Answer
You can find the baggage allowances and charges on the various airline sites. With United, the carry on rules are here: https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/travel/Pages/BaggageCarry-On.aspx?camp=virtual_expert . You are allowed 1 carry on bag plus one personal item that should fit under the seat in front of you. The size of the carry on bags are limited to 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches (114 cm).

Delta: http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/baggage/during-your-trip/carry-on.html - the rules are the same as on United.

Malaysia: http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/au/en/book-and-plan/baggage/hand-baggage.html - the size restrictions are the same but there is also a maximum weight restriction of 7 kg. First class passengers get a 2nd carry on bag plus the personal item.

My kids' school has to have a mesh or clear backpack and in the past, the clear plastic ones just don't hold up. My 11 year old has a Jansport backpack, but my 4 year old will be starting school in the fall and I'd like to find him a backpack that's his size. The only ones I've ever seen in Walmart hand down to the elementary school kids knees. I would love to find one that could be personalized for him, but that's just the icing on the cake.

How to Make a Cute bag to carry around Camp?

Hadley M

Im going to a week long overnight camp next week and i want a bag i can take to go to the pool or carry something i need. we cant bring backpacks or purses though. Help!

Answer
You might start by finding a nice tote bag, then personalize it to make it stick out from other kids' bags. If you can sew, you can add colorful patches to it, or even embroider your name on it. You can find tote bags in all sorts of places. I got one from our library for carrying books. They sell them real cheap.

Another solution is to find a colorful pillowcase. Knock large grommets into the open end, about every three or four inches. (Grommets are those metal rings in the corners of flags to keep them from ripping. You can get a simple grommet kit at home stores and sewing stores.) Then get a length of rope, weave it in and out of the grommets, then tie it together to make a big loop around the open end of the pillowcase. The rope becomes the strap for carrying it over your shoulder. By weaving it in and out of the grommets, it will draw itself closed when the bag is full and you pick it up by the rope.

Have a great time at camp!

AJS

The key to taking great photos is always having your camera with you and taking lots of shots. Therefore I'm considering switching to a Canon G9. Anybody have an opinion? Reviews are great.

Answer
That is the key, but downgrading your camera is not the way to go. You will loose far too many features (interchangeable lenses, the large sensor in the DSLR, VERY low shutter lag, well the list goes on and on).

I am a pro and I carry at least one DSLR and three lenses every where I go. I keep it secured in my car, out of view. I also have a little point and shoot for taking idea shots when I don't have the DSLR in my backpack.

Keep your DSLR and buy a nice compact camera. You will notice the difference in the way they work soon enough.

I'm looking into purchasing a mirrorless camera. I am a frequent traveler and have found that lugging around my DSLR while backpacking has become a huge hassel. For under $700 what camera would give me the best bang for my buck? After reading though some year end reviews the Olympus PEN E-PM2 seems to rate highly. Does anyone have any thoughts on this camera or on any other compact cameras on the market?

Answer
the olympus is a very good camera a comparable one (slightly better, and is more expensive: $1100) is the sony nex 7 or the fujifilm xe-1.

but with your budget the olympus is by far your best choice.

The thing is that I have no idea how to present it to her, so any suggestions would be helpful. I'm 14 and in high school so logical ideas only please. I am going on a weekend camp trip (2 nights and I will be staying at a campsite). I do not need to bring food but I will need to have a tent and sleeping bag with me. What is the most efficient way to pack a camping backpack? (include clothing, flashlights, tent, toiletries, first aid, etc)

Answer
What fun! Are you hiking a great distance each day? This makes a difference in how you pack. If you are bringing your personal items from your car to the camp site, keep it simple. Most small sized tents come with their own carry case and have a strap. That can go over one shoulder. Your sleeping bag can be carried under your other arm. Your backpack will be on your back. When you pack your bkpk, put the heavier items on the bottom. You want the weight of the bkpk to be lower to your hips than up on your shoulders. Especially if you are hiking for long distances. You might have a flashlight and some TP near the top of the pack in case you need them before you get your gear set up. You may want a self-inflating pad that you put on the floor of your tent and put your sleeping bag on top. Makes getting a good nights sleep better. Oh, pack an extra flashlight. Hope it helps. Have lots of fun and enjoy.

What should a beginner know about hiking?

radioactiv

I plan to aggressively get into hiking and add on camping/backpacking later on. Could you give me some tips please? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Good question and a better pursuit. You'll never regret your decision to be in the outdoors and it'll be something you enjoy for the rest of your life.

You've asked a really big question that has a million answers. I highly suggest doing a lot of reading online about the things you need to know.

Remember, there's a big difference between hiking and backpacking and camping. Each come with their own specific skills. But here are the very basics that apply to each.

First, a hiker never goes on the trail without the "Ten Essentials." Look that up online. Basically, they are extra food, extra clothing for layering, flashlight, waterproof matches, first aid kit, extra water and a few others.

Always check the weather before you go anywhere in nature. If there is a chance for anything inclimate be prepared with the right clothes. Remember, cotton isn't our friend on the trail. It's ok for some hot weather hiking but it doesn't absorb or repel moisture from sweat, rain or snow.

ALWAYS stay on the trail. The exception is a VERY short jaunt off trail but keep the main trail in eye's sight. If you get lost, don't panic and don't try and 'guess' your way out of it. You need to read up on this stuff online.

Show proper trail etiquette. If you encounter someone on the trail, the uphill hiker has the right of way on a narrow trail. Hikers have the right of way over bikes. Horses have the right of way over hikers.

NEVER leave ANYTHING behind. Pack it in - Pack it out. That means any food scraps and don't ever feed a wild animal.

Plot your route before you go and it's not a bad idea to tell a friend where you're going and when you're expected back.

While you can build up to getting better gear the two areas you need to be sure and make smart purchases is in your boots and your pack. Each offer different types for the kind of hiking you'll be doing.

Packs are either daypacks, which don't have a frame and are intended for day hikes, or backpacks which vary in size and offer different features. Choose the pack for the kind of hiking you'll be doing most. My favorite brand of pack is Osprey but shop around.

Footwear comes in two styles. Either trail shoes or boots. Trail shoes have a harder bottom than tennis shoes but are also low-cut. Boots come in three varieties. Lightweight, Midweight and heavier backpacking boots. A lot of this depends on the stability and rigidity of the sole. If you're planning on both backpacking and hiking, I'd suggest a midweight boot. My all time favorites are AKU's which are handmade in Romania. They run over 200 bucks but you can pick them up on Sierra Trading Post for a hundred sometimes. A great investment. Other good brands to consider are Vasque, Keen and a lot of people love Merrills. Oh...I highly suggest buying hiking socks made specifically for hiking. A liner sock isn't a bad idea either because it helps soak up the sweat.

OK..last tip. And sorry for going off. I just dig sharing info about hiking.

Remember this one. Nature isn't a theme park. You can die in nature. For real. It doesn't mean you will of course, but the moment you stop respecting nature is the moment you increase your chances for injury. So always consider the worst case scenario and work backwards from there.

What IF I don't judge my time well and I'm out on the trail after dark?
What would happen IF I stumbled from that rock I want to climb to get a better view?
What IF it starts to rain?

But as long as you think a little bit stay within your skill level there is no question you'll be better for the experience. There's been a lot of study's recently about the benefits of being in nature. Remember, as animals we've spent almost our entire existence outdoors. It's only in the very recent history that we've moved indoors. So being outdoors is an instinct for us. And man...there's nothing better than being out on a killer trail and getting a big rush of that instinct. Feels great!

What do I pack when I take my toddler and infant camping?

I am just wanting to know if anyone has any good tips for what to take along for our trip.

Answer
You don't say how old your infant is - and as you said infant and not baby, I would talk to your peditrician first and make sure they have had enough shots and are strong enough to go. Camping lends itself to misquitos bites, ticks and other things...

With that being said though - for slightly older babies - be sure to bring a baby backpack (for ages 6 months and up) keeps them elevated and allows for them to see everything better - also acts as a diaper bag. Jogger strollers are also a wonderful invention fo rthose trail that you can use them on.

A bassinet or portacrib - as they can't sleep in sleeping bags.

DIAPERS, DIAPERS & more DIAPERS as well as ziploc bags to seal them in while you are hiking, etc... since there may not be any garbage cans near and this will prevent a mess or smell in your diaper bag.

If you aren't breastfeeding - plenty of formula, bottles & BOTTLED water as you probably won't be able to boil water and you don't want them drinking tap water.

How to pack for a trip to Cherry hill NJ?

Julia

I will be going to Cheery hill NJ next month! I will be going on a airplane with my brother. List some tips and tricks please! Btw I am a girly girl!

Answer
I have packed for many trips before, so I know most of what you will need. Bring clothes for each day, and roll them up (if it won't damage them) to save space. If you are camping, you will need to put the clothes in Zip Lock baggies to avoid them getting wet. Always bring extra socks, regardless of whether you are camping or not. Since most airplanes charge for excess luggage, you will need to pack smart in your suitcase, doing things like putting your socks inside your shoes, using the side pockets of the suitcase, etc...

In terms of a carry on, I would suggest carrying your things in a backpack or similar bag. You should bring books, your iPod/ MP3 if you have one, your phone, magazines, etc. Also remember that your carry on should be small enough to bring on the airplane, or they will make you check it. You are allowed one personal item, which could be a laptop case, a purse, or any other similar item.

Hope this helps!! Have fun in Cherry Hill!!

How to find areas of "wilderness" to camp?

I am looking for remote areas in NC that I can camp on, I am not looking for campgrounds, I am looking for vast and remote areas for a survival/backpack/camping trip. Also I need to be able to make ground fires and cut trees (if need be, definitely not cutting green trees just to cut/perferably dead trees) and i need to be able to do it legally, I have heard most State parks do not allow you to make fires or cut trees. Example : where does Les Stroud and Bear Grylls find all this amazing land?

Answer
Les and Bear use private property. State and national forests do not allow the cutting of trees or the harm or alteration of natural features and wildlife or campfires without specific permit. You could have a fire with a permit and you could use dead fall wood you find laying on the ground. There are ways to experience the wild lands with out cutting trees or making fire you just bring your own shelter and use a backpackers stove. Fishing and hunting can be done you just need to obey the laws of the land and have the permits required to do so. Wilderness area's are located in national forests and most require a permit to access them, Wild lands are all throughout a national forest and you can camp anywhere with in them it is called "dispersed camping" and again the only permits you will need are a campfire permit and possibly a parking permit.

How to prepare for a long distance camping trip?

I have camped all my life but they have always been in driving distance so I pack up the car and off I go. I am flying from Boston to CA for a 4 day camping trip and am unsure about packing for a plane ride. The backpack I plan on bringing is peobably too big for carry on, but I don't trust it checked. What do you suggest? Carry on my sleeping bag and pillow and check the pack? Maybe?

Thanks!

Answer
I would pack my backpack as I would for the camping trip. And then but a big cheap duffel bag. (I got a huge hockey gear sized one at a local chain store for cheap.) Put your whole ready to go pack in it and zip it up. The duffel protects the pack and all the straps, and can be folded down small and stowed away while your camping. Until the flight home.
Some packs have a small removable pouch or pocket that can be used as a carry on.

How good is the PSE Coyote bow?

Good Guy

So i was looking at a simple bow, i came across the PSE coyote, ive heard mixed reviews about it, a common problem being an issue with the limbs coming apart or something but they fixed that problem after 2010 so thats no big deal. But other than that, how is the bow, and how many pounds does it have? I know its a low end $250 bow. But would it be good enough for target shooting and an occasional deer?

Answer
excellent choice for recurve bow ,i love take down recurve personally for my backpack while camping

all you do is attach string position limbs and screw down limbs

id go for 55 pounds myself available at cabelas for 269

What should I use for high school, a backpack or a roxy book tote? Iâve seen a lot of girls with roxy book totes, and I donât want to look nerdy with a big backpackâ¦high school girls any ideas?

Answer
im a junior in high school and last year i tried carrying a tote and by the third day i switched back to my backpack..totes can't carry as much you can't be as organized and they tend to hurt your shoulder because all the weight is focused on the shoulder...backpacks are more durable and jansport makes a lot of really nice ones:

Do girls still carry backpacks in high school or do they only carry totes?

Siena

I'm going into high school next year and my mom is telling my how no one is going to be carrying a backpack in high school (all of the girls will carry totes). I've found some really cute backpacks online but she says if I want to have style I need a tote. I'm getting older so I feel I should be able to think for myself but is there really a lack of backpacks in high school?

Answer
I dislike totes with a passion. I carried one for a few days and my shoulders and back practically died. No one really cares if you have a backpack or a tote. Especially because there are so many nice backpacks out there these days, and no I am not talking about those flimsy canvas ones from Victoria Secret. If you want a compromise, I suggest carrying your books to and from school in a sturdy backpack that won't kill your back before you step into Uni, and keeping a large purse or tote in your locker so you can shuttle a light load to and from your locker to class. This way you can keep the style of a tote, but be able to carry everything you will need for high school without it falling out of your arms when you walk to the bus stop, home, or car. I know people who do this and it works fairly well, but if it seems like too much of a hassle I would just get a good sturdy backpack that you are willing to carry to every class. In your search for a backpack, my recommendations for determining if it is a proper backpack is to look at its features. A good backpack should have:
1) multiple zippered compartments- so stuff stays in place with no risk of falling out
2) padded straps- preferably in a 'U' shape to distribute weight more evenly across your back
3) padded or stiff back- so books don't dig into your spine
4) nylon, silicone coated liner or fabric- for water resistance, you don't what to get your books wet
5) sturdy bottom panel- won't sag and sit uncomfortably on your hips
6) chest or waist strap- while not necessary to a good bag, can help distribute weight even better when you have big loads

here is the bag I have, but in a different print:

I hope this is helpful to you, and remember that it isn't what other people think, but your health and comfort.

What is there to do in Europe for an group of 18 year olds?

Zach Pauli

Three friends and I are going backpacking through Europe this Summer. Were going to London, Paris, Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Rome, Venice, Florence, Zermatt, Salzburg, Munich, Berlin, and Amsterdam. We will leave May 20 and come back on June 20. What would interest four 18 year old boys in those areas?

Answer
With places this far apart and only a month for the trip, you're going to be spending most of your time in transit from place to place. You may want to consider cutting back some to have more time actually seeing and doing things.

If you're planning to get around by train, check the travel times and plan a route using the resources on this site:
http://www.seat61.com/ - trains are a convenient way to get around here. This site has a huge amount of information on using the trains. It includes detailed information on railpasses including how to tell whether a pass will be cheaper than individual tickets or not and links to the various national rail sites where you can find schedules and prices. There are also instructions on how to use a railpass if you go that way and what to avoid to get the most out of a pass. A pass is unlikely to be of value for your trip because there is no pass that can be used in both the UK and continental Europe. The German site is one of the best for finding schedules throughout most of Europe. Where night trains are an option, they can be a cost effective way of traveling because you don't need to pay for a hotel/hostel for that night.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - budget flights especially good within Europe. For longer trips, this can be a better option than the trains. The places you're thinking of are far apart and flying would be the best option.

If you plan to drive, you can find directions and driving time estimates here: http://www.viamichelin.com/

What's of interest really depends on you a lot. I like the historical sites, museums, galleries, and food in all of these places. If you're looking for nightlife, London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Munich, Berlin and Amsterdam are all very good. You might want to check this site for festivals, exhibitions and events going on during the time you plan to be here: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm

How To Keep Her Entertained On Flight?

.

Me- 15yr old girl- and my five year old sister will be flying from California to New York next week to visit our mom before Christmas.

It's not a horrendously long flight but she has a really short attention span. What are some ways I can keep her entertained on the flight?

Thanks.

Answer
While we've never flown together, my son is five and we do take frequent long car trips. Some things I do are pack a small backpack of his favorite books, his Doodle Pad (magnetic writing board) and some small toys to keep him occupied. She might enjoy a walkman with kids' music, too (my son always feels "grown up" with the headphones on). When I know my son is getting bored I'll often play games while looking out the window and we will point things out and talk about them - this might be even more interesting from the air (especially as you get closer to NYC).

Have fun, be safe!
