Hi, can anyone advise me on any particular features to look for when choosing a backpack / rucksack. I won't be carrying camping stuff / bedding. Will probably be in hot and cold parts of Asia.

Make sure the backpack is water-proof and well insulated. It is really important that it has a pocket for a water bottle. Make sure the straps have some padding if you are going to be carrying it around a fair amount.
*And as an added tip for the contents, make sure you always carry a role of toilet paper and a bottle of Purel with you wherever you go.

how many carry on items are allowed on international flights?

hey, i'm flying with united airlines to heathrow and then i'll fly with malaysia airlines to KL, malaysia. what are the carry on items that's allowed? is it ok for me to bring a carry-on suitcase and a backpack? or am i gonna get charged?
and, i'm flying domestically first with delta airlines to Washington Dulles. is it ok to bring a carry-on suitcase and a backpack?

You can find the baggage allowances and charges on the various airline sites. With United, the carry on rules are here: https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/travel/Pages/BaggageCarry-On.aspx?camp=virtual_expert . You are allowed 1 carry on bag plus one personal item that should fit under the seat in front of you. The size of the carry on bags are limited to 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches (114 cm).
