Three friends and I are going backpacking through Europe this Summer. Were going to London, Paris, Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Rome, Venice, Florence, Zermatt, Salzburg, Munich, Berlin, and Amsterdam. We will leave May 20 and come back on June 20. What would interest four 18 year old boys in those areas?

Answer
With places this far apart and only a month for the trip, you're going to be spending most of your time in transit from place to place. You may want to consider cutting back some to have more time actually seeing and doing things.

If you're planning to get around by train, check the travel times and plan a route using the resources on this site:
http://www.seat61.com/ - trains are a convenient way to get around here. This site has a huge amount of information on using the trains. It includes detailed information on railpasses including how to tell whether a pass will be cheaper than individual tickets or not and links to the various national rail sites where you can find schedules and prices. There are also instructions on how to use a railpass if you go that way and what to avoid to get the most out of a pass. A pass is unlikely to be of value for your trip because there is no pass that can be used in both the UK and continental Europe. The German site is one of the best for finding schedules throughout most of Europe. Where night trains are an option, they can be a cost effective way of traveling because you don't need to pay for a hotel/hostel for that night.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - budget flights especially good within Europe. For longer trips, this can be a better option than the trains. The places you're thinking of are far apart and flying would be the best option.

If you plan to drive, you can find directions and driving time estimates here: http://www.viamichelin.com/

What's of interest really depends on you a lot. I like the historical sites, museums, galleries, and food in all of these places. If you're looking for nightlife, London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Munich, Berlin and Amsterdam are all very good. You might want to check this site for festivals, exhibitions and events going on during the time you plan to be here: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm

Does anyone remember the Love Is from the seventies. It was all over backpacks, folders, notebooks etc?

Yeoux Leig

It was two little kids a boy and a girl and it would say stuff like Love Is being in love. or Love is..being together.

Answer
Yeah, you can still buy it. From sites that stock "kawaii" and "kitsch" items. Like: www.chicki.co.uk
