overnight backpacking/camping in new york state?

backpack camping new york state

DGlock

I want to go backpacking/camping in new york state (possibly Adirondack State Park) with three other people. We are hoping to hike up to a spot to set up tents etc. and spend the night. We are each 17 or 16 years old - is this a problem? I know that in Connecticut at least one person must be 18. Thanks!

Answer
It shouldn't be. There usually isn't someone there checking IDs at the trailheads. I'm pretty sure there is nothing in the DEC regs about age limits. However, if you are camping in an area where use of a bear can is mandatory and you don't already own one, you will need a credit card to put down as a deposit when you rent one. Aside from that, most backcountry campsites are first come-first serve.

Where can I go primitive camping in the New York area?

MZ

Looking for a place where I can go primitive camping (open camping/dispersion camping) within driving distance (less than 5 hours) in the New York City area. Anyone know of a National Forest or park that allows this that they would recommend? One with great hiking would be ideal. I'm looking to go in the fall when the leaves start the change. Many thanks.

Answer
you can get to many places within a 5 hour radius of nyc...
in new york state you can go to the adirondacks or catskills (the catskills are closer but the ADK's are way more magnificent)...

since you're willing to drive up to 5 hours you can also get to places within new england such as vermont and new hampshire..in NH the area around mt washington and the presidential range has the best mountain scenery in the east

...as far as specific camp istes you'll have to do your own research depending on if you want to car camp, backpack or canoe camp and depending on how difficult you want

Also, what are highlights to see while visiting the Banff, Lake Louise area? We are big hikers - know of any great hikes/trails? Also looking for good campgrounds. Thanks!

Answer
Just adults or adults and kids?

There are some great places near Revelstoke. The Enchanted Forest is a lot of fun even if you don't have kids. It's west of Revelstoke. If you have a beautiful day it's a nice walk.

http://www.enchantedforestbc.com/

In Revelstoke is the Nickelodeon Musuem. That is an incredible place filled with all sorts of mechanical musical items from history. Fascinating!!!

http://www.revelstokenickelodeon.com/

East of Revelstoke are a couple of nice walks - the Skunk Cabbage Trail and Giant Cedar Trail. Meadows-in-the-sky is beautiful in late July/Early August

http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/bc/revelstoke/activ/activ2_E.asp

When you head into Yoho National Park (west of Banff) you should head in and see Takakkaw Falls. It's a beautiful place!

http://www.waterfallswest.com/bc_takakkaw.html

Banff/Jasper/Lake Louise/Morraine Lake - there's just too much to list. You could stay busy hiking for weeks on end. There are lakes to see, glaciers to see, hikes and backpacking to do. I love it out there.

Just north of Banff (drive north out the main road and keep going) there is an old ghost town and coal mining business. That's a neat place to wander around. There are placards around the old coal mining buildings to read and learn.

As for camping, in Revelstoke there's the Smoky Bear Campsite. It's not much (there is a heated pool) and it's right on the highway but the owners are wonderful people (we stayed in one of their cabins last year).

There are a lot of campgrounds in Banff but they don't take reservations. It's first come first served.

Where to go backpacking/camping near Vancouver, WA?

Swany

Im looking to go on a 3-5 mile backpacking trip one way and then camp and then hike back in a couple of days? Any one know where a good spot to do this is near Vancouver WA? Within 2 hours or so. Also if there was a fishing hole near where i would camp that I could catch trout or some other type of fish to eat that would be great.

What kind of supplies do you have to buy for middle school in your area?

kid ink backpack

Debi L

I teach and parents do not supply their kids with much more than a back pack even though a list is given out. We have many organizations who provide free supplies in our area, but parents are either too lazy or think kids do not need these items. this forces teachers to have to supply OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET considering they make next to nothing anyway.
I just wondered if your lists you are given in your area are long or short, what is on that list, and so forth..............

Answer
We have a long list (I'm in 8th grade):
1. A supply of #2 pencils. (I got a pack of 24 for a dollar.)
2. One "trapper keeper" type binder. (I have one from last year- I took care of it and it still looks new.)
3. One box of colored pencils. (I bought a new box for a dollar.)
4. One pair of scissors. (I already had a pair.)
5. Two large glue sticks. (I got two packages of two for 15 cents each.)
6. One bottle of white glue. (I got a box of two for a dollar.)
7. Five stretchy cloth cook covers. (I bought two in addition to the ones I already had. I spent 58 cents apiece.)
8. One container of wet-wipes. (I got a container for a dollar.)
9. Eight spiral notebooks. (I got 10 for 1 dollar.)
10. A box of markers. (I got box for $1.20.)
11. A supply of black and/or blue pens. (I got a few packages of erasable pens for about $1.15 apiece, and three boxes of multi-click pens for three dollars. Each have four colors- red, green, blue, and black.)
12. One bottle of spray cleaner. (I got one for a dollar.)
13. A box of crayons. (We have a "buddy-program" where we have to work with little kids. I got a box of 64 for a dollar.)
14. A math compass. (I got one for 99 cents.)
15. A ruler. (I had one from last year, but I got another one for 99 cents because they have a habit of breaking at bad times.)
16. A supply of red pens. (The red ink in the multi-click pens is what I will use. If they dry up, I'm sure we have a few in our house.)
17. A zippered pencil case. (I had one from last year.)
18. A protractor. (I had one from last year, but I also got a math set for a dollar. It had several types of protractors, a compass, pencils, etc.)
19. Two rolls of paper-towels. (We already had them.)
20. Two boxes of tissues. (We already had them.)
21. Eight two-pocket folders. (I got ten for a dollar.)
22. A backpack. (I have one from last year.)

-Anyway, that is our list. I bought a few additional things, but I didn't cross over 25 dollars. I paid for everything with my own money, and I got everything for such an inexpensive price because I looked on the websites of stores that sold school-supplies before I went to them. (There are a lot of sales-I didn't get one crappy item nor did I go to any crappy stores.) Anyway, the reason the kids in your area come unprepared can be one of two things:
a. If it's a bad area- the parents there are probably on public aid, and are just looking for more free hand-outs. (They are used to the government taking care of them from the cradle to the grave.)
b. If it's a good area- the parents there are cheap and/or want the same handouts that the kids in the bad area get. I go to a Catholic School, and we get very few free supplies. (Just a starter pack.)

P.S. VioletB, I live in a big-city. I bought all of my supplies without Wal-Mart, Good-Will, etc. I don't see why "poor" people can't too. I've been driven past low-income areas- most of the people there have a bad sense of priorities. I've seen people shop with food-stamp cards while wearing brand new expensive gym shoes and gaudy jewelry. (And this goes for all races, just so that no one calls me a racist.) The only kids who should be receiving aid are the children of widows, handicapped people, etc. Also, like the person who asked this question brought up: There are many organizations that provide free supplies- there is no reason why kids shouldn't have supplies.

Tips on how to be more organized?

Q. I'm going to college soon, so I'm going to have to be super organized and such. Give me some tips! I'd love to here what you have to say. I want everyone to help me- young kids and people who never went to college, too! Help me be more organized!

Answer
I've got a couple, based on what I've learned from my own experience and what I've noticed my own students doing.
First, you'll have a organizational thing-y for each class you're taking - whether it's a binder, or a folder or an accordion file. Be sure to have everything ready to go for each day in a different backpack or bookbag so on Tuesdays you know it's the green bag (or whatever). Keep each bag fully stocked with paper, pens, and the peripherals you'll need. That way all you have to do is put your laptop in the bag of the day.
Next, try using a variety of ink pens for taking notes in class (if you don't use your laptop to do so). For instance, use green for background notes or outlining, then use blue for basic facts that you'll need to know (bio's or formulas) and red for key facts that the prof says will be on the exam or quiz. That way when it comes time to study you can order rank your notes and study more effectively.
Also, do NOT highlight everything in your textbooks - that makes highlighting essentially useless. If everything is a high priority for you to remember then that means you are insecure about what you know and you're doomed to failure (not you personally, mind you. Just people who do this).

Can someone recommend some places for camping in southern California (preferably San Diego county, but doesn't have to be) for camping.

Especially a place that is good for backpacking (you know, carrying your tent and all supplies in a backpack, then setting up camp wherever)

I will give out best answer

Thanks :)

Answer
My favorite place in Socal to camp is Joshua Tree National Park, it ROCKS! Literally. Fantastic landscape and fun but don't go in the summer. It's best in spring but good in Fall and not bad in the winter as long as the winds not howling.

Is There any good place in southern california to go backpacking and fishing?

visione si

I'm in the Fallbrook/ Rainbow area and I'm looking for a good area to go backpacking and fishing, fly fishing or conventional, does'nt matter, but I'm wondering if there is anything around here or If I'm going to have to go out a ways or not. Thanks

Answer
It depends on what you consider far away. You have Big Bear Lake and then in the San Bernardino National Forrest you have Lake Silverwood. Both great places to hike, camp and fish and really within an hour and a half drive from where you are. I lived in Riverside and used to go there all the time. Great fishing in both places. Google them and you'll be happy.

Have fun.

I'm having Nerd Day at school & I was thinking about participating but I don't know how to dress. Please also help me with which hair to do. So I was going to put tape on my glasses. Then either part my hair and tie it into two braids on the side or part my hair and tie it into two high pigtails. Please help me choose. I know nerds wear suspenders, but that's all I know. Any ideas?

Answer
I was a nerd for halloween and I have to say, I looked very authentic! I wore my flare jeans and cuffed them so they were too short, ankle socks, running shoes (or converse if you like [but then your socks have to be higher than the shoes]) a plaid shirt and tucked it in and wore suspenders and put an assortment of pens in my breast pocket, took a pair of glasses, popped out the lenses and taped the bridge of the glasses together with a sponge-bob band-aid, parted my hair in the center, put it up in two high pig tails with decorative hair bands and collected candy with a roller-board backpack...

hope this helps! :p

I'll start:

disposable razor, electrical wiring, crunched christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, TV remote

and I'd like to say "baby gate doorknob" except I didn't catch him eating it, until he pooped it out whole, after a trip to the vet.

it is amazing - you think you have completely cleared and puppy-proofed an area, and they seem to pull stuff out of thin air!
WOW. This has been enlightening, amusing, and in alot of cases, gross.

Thanks for sharing!

Answer
This particular over sized Boxer mix came out of a drug house in a big city. There was suspicion she had been used as a "test subject" for street drugs. She for sure had ISSUES, a few bolts loose and was a rampant chewer.

Her menu over her lifetime was:

A $100 Scientific Calculator (copped from a backpack)
Jewelry - anything she could steal off my dresser
Rare plant bulbs
A thermometer (that she found in a new house I just moved into - cause I didn't own one)
A 12' tree...chewed off at ground level
Her own poop
Money - paper or coin (anything she could reach on the table, or counter top.
Cat, dog, raccoon, cow and bird poop
Human poop (camping once.. I thought I was gonna die)
Multiple hoses
Parts of a broken light bulb
A "floater" she fished out of the kid's john
A USED feminine napkin *gasp*she snagged out of the weeds (on the side of the road) while on a walk...
My dad's cherished barrel cactus.
My grandson's plastic alligator
Bumble Bees / yellow jackets/ honey bees
Quail

BUT... WHAT ALMOST KILLED HER (besides ME)... was
A 2"x2" redwood rung off my deck railing. She chewed it out one summer day so she could poke her head out of the railing and watching me pull into the driveway. She was in the vets for almost a week being treated for that stunt. She lived...but just barely.

Oddly...she's now pushing 11 yrs old and sleeping on the rug right behind my computer chair. I didn't dare rehome her.. I was afraid someone would take her out and SHOOT HER. It wasn't her fault her brain was fried. Now...she's allllllll gray faced and moves with a hitch in her git-a-long. She still occasionally steals a grocery receipt if she can snag it...but it's more for attention then anything else...LOL *knock on wood*... she has not ruined anything of value in a long time.
.
.ADDED:
You guys mentioning furniture disasters -
A friend of mine went and got an adolescent, very rambunctious Boxer and for what ever BRAIN FART REASON...she left him home alone (.l-o-o-s-e in her house) about a week after she got him. When she got back he had pulled the cushions off her n-e-w couch! Starting on the front...he chewed a whole clear out the BACK of the couch! She called me for sympathy and all I could do was laugh until I cried......rotffffffffffff. Duh x 100...lol What WAS she thinking?

Backpacking for Spring Break? Maybe an old growth forest?

Mrgoodhair

Alright me and a couple of my good friends really want to go (tent) camping for spring break but have no idea where to go. I would love to go camping at an old growth forest but do not even know where to start. We go to Louisiana State University and do not mind spending an entire day driving to a destination. I would prefer not to stay at a campground , so does anybody have a suggestions.

Ps we are all very skilled campers

Backpack along the Wild Azaleas
Between the months of March and April, the Wild Azalea National Recreation Trail is magnificently overflowing with southern pink azalea blooms and winter-white dogwood. Its 31 miles also claim the title of Louisiana's longest trail, though its easily traveled path is perfect for a family hike. In case you are not interested in trekking across all 31 miles, the trail is divided into sections. Campsites are accessible along the way.

What career involves traveling and studying cultures?

Crystal

Basically traveling, living abroad and having to use your mind [intelligence] is what I am searching for.

Answer
The first thing that comes to mind is journalism. If you want to live abroad, travel a lot, and have the intellectual challenge of assimilating into other cultures, then you could set your goal to become a special correspondent of a region for an international news broadcaster (such as CNN, BBC, Fox, or Al Jazeera) or publication (such as Time, Newsweek, or The Wall Street Journal).

Another thing is to apply for jobs in cable TV's such as Discovery Travel and Living. They have shows about travel and lifestyle in different parts of the world, and need someone intelligent who learns new things fast in order to host their shows. Must be fun loving and interactive too.

A less obvious job is to teach abroad in international schools. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and have friends from North America, Australia, India, and Europe working as expat teachers in international schools. They get to work in an English speaking environment, but at the same time, get to be in a foreign country, interacting with people from different nationalities, including locals. The pay is great, and so are the vacations, which you may choose to spend on travelling the country and then some. If you come to Indonesia, an idea to spend your vacation is to backpack to exciting places like Tana Toraja, Bali-Lombok, Bunaken Marine Park, the royal city of Yogyakarta, Raja Ampat Island resorts, Baliem Valley, and Lake Toba. Bali, in particular, offers a lot of culture tourism where you could even live in the villages and learn traditional skills like Balinese cooking, dance, shadow puppets, gamelan music, sculpting, painting, etc.

My dad works for a multinational mining company (American) and has colleagues from many countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Africa, and Chile. They mostly come from engineering, accounting, and management backgrounds.

My cousin works for a finance company. She is a New Zealand citizen who studied in Canada, and now splits between New York and London with the company she interned with in her final year of school. I have another cousin who is an Indonesian citizen; she studied and worked in California for a few years, but now is taking dance school in Singapore and working part time.

My fiance's dad used to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in our country. I don't know what he studied in college, and as far as I know he's just an administrative worker (clerk) with big dreams. But he managed to travel to and live in Switzerland (where he and his wife had my fiance), Sweden (where they had my fiance's brother), Italy, The Netherlands, and Belgium, where he was working for the embassy. He never really picked up English or any other languages, and his mindset remains the same as the village peasant with big dreams of the big city, but at least he managed to secure a really good education for all three of his children, and they are all embarking on successful careers now.

If you want to follow his footsteps but actually use your brains, then maybe you want to take a bachelor's degree in International Relations and work your way up to become your country's ambassador.

Has anybody ever traveled far away ALONE?

F. 44 yr o

I'm planning a trip alone for January 2008 to...not sure yet: India,Afica or Europe. Would anybody like to share their experience with me? Especially if your a woman, divorced and leaving 3 kids (2 teenagers and 9 yr old boy) with the ex for 15-20 days. You see, it'll be my first trip ALONE and WITHOUT my kids and i'm scared i'll get so home sick without them that i'll want to take the first plane back!
Thanks everybody!

Answer
I'm a year older than you are but had my children much later. My oldest is younger than your youngest! I worked for the airlines and travelled, mainly alone through most of the world, visiting almost 60 countries.

I was big on backpacking and youth hostelling. It was funny as people would ask "But don't the airlines provide you with a hotel?" Yes they did...when I was working! I liked hostels because you get to meet tons of people and no, they're not all teenagers. Most are young but they tend to be a bit more educated and aware then those you'll find hanging out outside 7-11's back home.

http://www.hihostels.com/web/index.en.htm?linkid=980019&linksubid=overseas

I also did rail passes. These are great because not only are they great value but you really see the country and hang out with local people, not just tourists. I took ten days off, arrived in Zurich, bought my railpass in the airport and just took off seeing the country for 10 days. Much prettier than by road (experience with both!)

My favorite guide is Lonley Planet. Having used many, I'm not as happy with others;

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/

Rough Guides are good too but LP rules the roost for me. I don't recommend the guy named Rick Steves but he does give good information. It's a little limiting.

http://www.ricksteves.com/home.htm

I do also recommend Europe. I was just in Greece. You can simply go to the port in Athens and grab a ferry going to any of the islands. It was beautiful.

I wouldn't suggest Africa or India only because of the personal safety aspect. I had to be much more "on-guard" there then elsewhere and frankly, it's better to do those places with other people. Both are very different culturally and it can be isolating when wandering around on your own. Don't misread me though, I love both places. I'm just thinking "woman, alone, first time..."

Otherwise, Asia too is very easy. Well, most of it. Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand are great for a woman alone. I know from experience and lived in HK for a year and a half. China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Korea were a bit more challenging. Maybe not for a "first timer" but also fabulous places none-the-less.

Australia and New Zealand, either/or. Piece of cake. Great sights, great food, great looking guys...you can't go wrong in either. The only downside is that it might not be exotic enough. Depends on what you want but definitely an easy ride.

If it's any consolation, I too used to get butterflies every time I went somewhere new, even after 30, 40, 50 countries. All part of the adventure. Tell yourself, it's normal and you'll get over it. So worthwhile.

Just GO!

What kind of DSLR backpack should I buy?

I am travelling to Beijing in July for 6 days.

I want to take my Nikon DSLR 40, but I am leery of carrying it around the city. I thought of using a backpack, but I need it to be more than just a camera bag. I am not planning to carry much equipment (perhaps just two lenses and a cleaning cloth), but I need to personal items as well.

Any suggestions on a good, relatively inexpensive bag?

I'm going to recommend a Lowepro Vertex 200..
http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Lowepro-Vertex-200-AW-Camera-Backpack-Review.aspx

It's not going to break the bank, it's very high quality, will carry all you need, and will provide you with more than enough room should you wish to expand your photo equipment in the future.

Your best bet is to go into a camera store and handle and examine all the bags properly, rather than view them online.

Every time school starts new backpack, new shoes, new clothes, new everything! How can this be stopped? My wife will not tell her no, and when I say not to she does it anyway?
I can't cancel the cards they are in her name.
To those who asked, yes she is a step daughter.
She does wear a uniform, and no I am not talking about worn out or outgrown items. I am talking about stuff worn once.
Some worn more than once but still in good shape as well.

Answer
um..no dude I feel bad for you I'm a person who is kinda cheap and likes to bargain.I hate stuff that's all designer and crap like that.I go to value village or thrift places and look around I find one of a kind stuff. For school I don't need that much stuff.I but little accessories like pins or patches and bracelets.I always wear the same old worn out converse sneakers.I'm a teenage girl and don't need new stuff all the time.I like new things once in awhile like a couple new T-shirts but yup i like to find bargain buys.Or make some stuff like arm warmers or something accessories.I don't carry around handbags or anything just a messenger cool bag will suit fine. But I do spend some money on make up like M.A.C or something.Or hair product like gel or styling. But tell your daughter to stop being a spoiled brat as for your wife explain to her she has everything she needs.I need to do chores to get my money so I try to be careful how I spend it like if my friends want to go to the movies lll lie and say I'm a child to get a cheaper price.Make your wife teach her about bargain shopping.I feel saisfaction when I get something for a cheap price.Sorry for the spelling this stupid yahoo spell check is not working right now.Well seriously be more strict with your daughter about money and make her bust her @$s for money.I bust my ass just to earn 10 bucks.Be more strcit with her.Best of luck
btw.not all teen girls are like this!

Q. Im a 23 year old female and I want to start hiking, climbing, camping, and other outdoor activities. None of my current friends do these activities so I have no one to go with or turn to for advise.

I'm basically trying to find out what associations or groups there are that I can join.

and

If there are any magazines or websites to subscribe to.

BTW I live in Virginia

Thanks!

Answer
Virginia is a big state -- if you live near Glen Allen or near the NC border, go to one of the REI outdoor stores. Here's their site with location in the VA area.

http://www.rei.com/map/store

They offer rock climbing instruction classes and hiking and backpacking outings. They also sell and rent gear like tents, sleeping bags and backpacks. There is great rock climbing in North Carolina especially so you should be able to find lots of resources for that. Look in the phone book for independent shops that sell climbing and backpacking gear as well. Most offer intro courses and have information on local active groups.

Also look online at :

http://rockclimbing.meetup.com/cities/us/va/arlington/

This shows Meetup groups in the Arlington, VA, area. Just enter your city at the top right and any activity in the top left field (like hiking, kayaking or backpacking). These groups are a great, no cost way to connect with other people who can help teach you outdoor skills.

I'm going camping this weekend and I am looking for a few suggestions regarding food to pack. I've recently lost 30 lbs and this is my first weekend in a bathing suit. So, naturally, I want to stay lookin good and not chow down on some fatty, salty, bloating foods. I've already got fruits and veggies down on my list (frozen because I read somewhere that it will double as ice, which is an amazing space saver idea!)

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Answer
I'm a seasoned camper and have favorites for the type of camping I'll be doing. Sounds like you are either RV or car camping since you will have a cooler. In this instance, just remember the less pots and pans, the better.
- First rule: Prepare anything at home that you possibly can. Feels like a pain but you will love yourself for doing it before hand.
- Lunch: Sandwiches, fruit, cheese, nuts, chips/salsa, hot dogs/veggie dogs
- Dinner is easiest if you take stuff that can cook over/in the fire (hot dogs - on sticks, steaks & chicken on a grill rack, garlic bread-in foil, corn still in the husk-right in the fire, baked potatoes-in foil)
- Any pastas as this is easy and filling
- When cooking on the fire consider making 'aluminum foil' pockets (make a sealed pocket out of heavy duty foil filled with meat and veggies, like a nice fish with lemon/herbs, carrots, potatoes -- and throw in the fire). It's like a crock pot!
- Pre-made sauces (marinara, pesto)
- Breakfast: Before departing on your trip dice up your favorite omelet fillings like green peppers, smoked salmon, tomatoes, cheese, onion and throw these in a zip lock with uncooked scrambled eggs. Keep it on ice then when ready to eat, warm up the pan and dump the prepared and pre-measured contents in a pan.
- If backpacking and you need to take non perishables, my FAVORITE is pasta, pesto, and smoked salmon. All these don't need to refrigerated and are like a gourmet meal in the middle of no where, and it is a very easy meal: just boil the pasta and eat out of the pot!
Good luck and have fun!

What do I pack when I take my toddler and infant camping?

Janette S

I am just wanting to know if anyone has any good tips for what to take along for our trip.

Answer
You don't say how old your infant is - and as you said infant and not baby, I would talk to your peditrician first and make sure they have had enough shots and are strong enough to go. Camping lends itself to misquitos bites, ticks and other things...

With that being said though - for slightly older babies - be sure to bring a baby backpack (for ages 6 months and up) keeps them elevated and allows for them to see everything better - also acts as a diaper bag. Jogger strollers are also a wonderful invention fo rthose trail that you can use them on.

A bassinet or portacrib - as they can't sleep in sleeping bags.

DIAPERS, DIAPERS & more DIAPERS as well as ziploc bags to seal them in while you are hiking, etc... since there may not be any garbage cans near and this will prevent a mess or smell in your diaper bag.

If you aren't breastfeeding - plenty of formula, bottles & BOTTLED water as you probably won't be able to boil water and you don't want them drinking tap water.

I'm interested in taking up hiking/backpacking/camping through parks and the woods, especially in Northern Maine. Does anyone have any ideas of how to get started? Small goals? What would I need as far as equipment?

Answer
Well, I started doing some camping with my father at a young age. I joined the scouts and things went from there. I would suggest something along those lines - find a local club or group that enjoys doing camping and backpacking. You'll want to try camping first - backpacking is an acquired taste if you know what I mean. As far as hiking goes, go to an EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) or REI or LL Bean, and purchase a good pair of hiking boots and a good day pack(it doesn't have to be huge). Ask one of the sales associates to help you find the proper fit. Remember to break in your boots before hiking in them. Also get 2 Nalgene bottles - they're great. Get a guide book - it will have loads of helpful info. Try a few short hikes in the area and work your way up. After awhile try some 4000 footers. Camping and backpacking require a lot more equipment and a bit more experience. Always camp with at least one other person - and see if you can start out by borrowing some gear. Don't buy much until you're sure you want to get into the sport.

What are some volunteer/summer jobs in Yosemite National Park closely related to "Backpacking."?

I'm wanting to live and work in Yosemite National Park this upcoming summer. I absolutely love backpacking, camping, and hiking. I know there are obviously other positions, but are there any related to this where I would be in the backcountry a lot of the time?

Answer
The park has volunteer jr rangers that hike in or ride horseback and try to enforce the wilderness regulations and make sure that hikers are where they are supposed to be these guys and gals usually work in pairs and have satellite communication phones to call backup and radio in emergencies. In all my years I have only bumped into them once when I was returning from a trip I had to cut short due to a knee injury. I camped where I was not registered too camp. After explaining they went on their way. Here is a link to get you started.

Any remote or hike-in camping sites in Ohio?

KSJ

Hello, does anyone know of very primitive camp sites in Ohio? Preferably on the east side but it's not that important. I was really interested in Hocking Hills but I want a camp site that is away from people and very secluded, not your typical camping where your car is right there next to you at the site. Something where I could hike in would be great. Does this exist in Ohio?! Or if you know of any places in southern Michigan or western Pennsylvania that would be great too. Thanks!

Answer
Both southern Michigan (where I used to live) and the entire state of Ohio are just too densely populated to have any "deep" wilderness area. Flat land like that all was sold off, settled and farmed in the first couple of centuries of the European immigration to North America. However, due to there being more mountainous areas in Pennsylvania, you can find some hike-in wilderness camping areas, particularly in the Allegheny National Forest in northwest to central PA. A few I have backpacked into are Minister Creek and the North Country Trail. Check out the Pennsylvania DCNR website for detailed information on trails and wilderness areas throughout the state.

Also, eastern West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest has some terrific backcountry areas like Otter Creek, Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods and Cranberry Backcountry. I've done multi-day backpack trips in all those areas. It really is some amazing country there, some of it reminds me of Switzerland.

Basically, if you want deep wilderness it has to be in areas that are not easy to set up farms or cities, in other words, steep terrain or deserts or areas with harsh weather.

i want to go camping with my friend this summer in new jersey?

Denise

where can we go?

Answer
What kind of camping do you want to do?

Car (tent), RV and Cabin Camping:

Most State Parks have campsites where you can park your car and setup your tents, or even park a small camper. Fire rings and picnic benches are provided, restrooms with showers are nearby, but no electrical, sewer or on-site water. Pets and alcohol are forbidden. Up in Northern NJ: Stokes State Forest, Highpoint State Park, Worthington State Forest and Wawayanda State Park are nice. Down at the Southern end there's Belleplain and Corsen's Inlet for car and small RV camping. But my favorite state campgrounds are in Wharton State Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. See the NJ DEP website for the complete list of state parks and campgrounds. All parks feature hiking trails, many have lakes with fishing, canoeing/kayaking and swimming areas, some allow mountain biking and horse riding.

There are private commercial campgrounds throughout the state where you can car camp or park an RV. Private campgrounds are more expensive but provide conveniences such as electric, on-site water and sewer connections. Game rooms, movies, swimming pools and other coordinated activities are provided at most commercial campgrounds. Most commercial campgrounds permit pets and *responsible* alcohol consumption. The most popular commercial campgrounds are in Southern NJ in and around Cape May, where the seashore attractions of Cape May and Wildwood are just a few minutes away. Beachcombers is my favorite commercial campground in the Cape May area. I've also stayed at several commercial campgrounds in the Pine Barrens, Wading Pines is my favorite.

Backpacking

If you want to go backpacking, the Appalachian Trail cuts through Northern NJ for 42 miles and is considered one of the top hiking trails in the US. The views in the NJ section are spectacular, but the terrain can be tough. The Batona Trail through the NJ Pine Barrens is also beautiful, and is much flatter and easier to follow. There are remote camp sites at several state forests that are not accessible to vehicles but are accessible to hikers, canoes and kayaks.

Canoeing/Kayaking

If canoeing or kayaking are your passion, the Pine Barrens again is the place to go in NJ. The Batsto, Mullica, Oswego and Wading Rivers offer plenty of remote scenery and accessible camping spots, and there are many outfitters to rent canoes or kayaks if you don't have your own. There are also some commercial and state campgrounds along the Delaware River on both the NJ and PA side of the river.

Summary

If you're sensing a common thread here you're not mistaken. My favorite area of NJ is the Pine Barrens. You have opportunities to fish, hike, canoe, kayak, shop, dine, explore historic sites and ghost towns, drive off-road on sand roads, geocache, and just sit back and enjoy the outdoors. It is my #1 choice for camping in NJ. But if you're more into the seashore attractions, the commercial campgrounds in the Cape May area are fantastic and draw visitors from throughout the Eastern USA and even international visitors.

Does anyone have advice on air travel with 3 kids alone, ages 5-10?

I'm traveling alone next week with my 3 kids at 6:45 AM (a 17 hour transantlantic flight on Air Canada!)from LAX. Advice on what to carry on, activities for the plane (Air Canada does not provide kids activies or for that matter food from Los Angeles to Toronto), etc. would be appreciated

Answer
I would definitely bring snacks for them, even if the airlines provide food, it's usually stuff my kids won't eat. I would avoid gummy snacks, since those are too close to gel, which is now prohibited on flights. You should be allowed to pre-board as well, check with your airline for sure about that. If your finances allow it, I've found traveling with either a lap top computer or one of those portable DVD players a Godsend for kids, make sure the battery is charged as well (possibly get an extra as well). If they have a Game Boy, Nintendo also makes little game boy videos of movies, TV shows, etc. Other ideas would be to have them bring books on board, etc. I have 2 children, and I would STUFF each child a backpack of their stuff. Magna Doodles are great for younger kids, and hit the toy section of WalMart or Target for fun travel toys. I found stuff generally held the kids attention a little longer if it was new, so I'd usually purposefully keep stuff until after take off. Check out the TSA (US) web site on traveling with kids and make sure you explain fully to them the screening procedures. Here's the link. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm
Best of luck to you and hope you have a good flight.

I'm writing a short review on a backpack I have recently bought and I'm submitting it on their official website. So please check it and tell me if there are any mistakes. This is the first time I review a product. Thanks.

I bought this laptop backpack last week and I couldn't be happier. It's *extremely* spacious, very affordable and the quality is absolutely amazing.
The water repelling protective rain coat is attached to the bottom of the bag so you will never lose it; you can simply "hide" it in a small dedicated pocket under the bag itself. It's very practical and top-quality. I poured some water on the outer side of the rain coat but it didn't absorb any of it and the inner side remained dry.
I can put my laptop plus a few thick dictionaries and textbooks inside the bag without feeling like the bag is running out of space. It has pockets and holders for external HDDs and a laptop charger, three pens, PDA/phone, MP3 player, a small P&S camera and one business card holder. This is incredible because I'm a teacher and I can carry all of my stuff in only one bag.
I wish the shoulder straps were slightly wider but still, they are very soft and comfortable.
In short, this bag is excellent and I highly recommend it.

Answer
Very nicely written. The company should be very happy with your review.

What should I wear to my college orientation?

Q. Is a sundress acceptable?
How about a long shirt/dress with leggings and sandals?
Or perhaps just a shirt and shorts?
Please do tell. Thank you.

Answer
Dress for the weather. If the weather is hot, a sundress is acceptable or a shirt and shorts would be fine, but be prepared for possible air conditioning coolness indoors. Perhaps bring along a sweater in your backpack.

It's a day to meet people so you'll be making and receiving lots of first impressions. So don't wear anything too scandalous, unless scandalous is the first impression you are intending to leave people with.

There will most likely be papers handed out at orientation. If the campus is at all lively, expect to run into representatives of lots of campus clubs and organizations handing out literature about upcoming events and introducing themselves. So besides giving you a place to stash your sweater, a backpack will give you a place to stash the papers you receive so you can review them later. Bring along a notebook and whatever you use to track your contacts and daily schedule, so you can pencil in interesting looking events that you want to attend and jot down notes as you get oriented. If you are a PDA (e.g. Palm organizer) user, it might be worth carrying an external battery pack for it in case your battery starts to run down before the day is done.

Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the official orientation so you have time to meet and interact with all those campus club representatives along the way without showing up late at the orientation event itself. If you're a new dorm resident, don't forget to bring your room key. Marking your name, building and room number on the front of your notebook just might be helpful in finding your way back home at the end of the day. A campus map may be a useful thing to bring along.

What are your plans for the possibility of rain? Some folks like to use a compact fold-up umbrella. An inexpensive hooded plastic poncho folds up small in your backpack and will cover you and your backpack if bad weather comes up. You get to make the call on the trade-off between practical and fashionable.

Be sure too to wear a smile. Interact with people and have fun. Like college itself, orientation day is not just about learning a bunch of facts that will be tossed in front of you, though catching on to the facts along the way is a good thing too.
