Which guy does it seem like I have a crush on? Do either one of them seem to like me back?

So theres this guy. I don't know if i like him. He's really sweet to me, but I'm not sure if I feel that way. I also have feelings for another guy that I've liked for a LONG time. Anyway, people say he likes me, but I don't know. It seems like it. Every morning i have to come to school early for Jazz band practice (30 minutes before school starts). Well we both showed up at the same time, and we were walking in and he carried my back pack for me. I was walking against a wall, and he was really close to me. It seemed like he wanted to grab my hand, but he didn't. A big group of my friends and I went trampolining one day. I had to stop and retie my cheer shoes (I'm a cheerleader) and he tied them for me. And he also let me have some of his water afterwards. Then, during concert band, he was behind me (he plays the drums) and he started playing with my hair. It was kinda weird haha. And at a band concert we were back stage (we got their an hour early) and he kept flirting with me. During lunch one day, he came by and sat next to me, and he told me corny jokes like "What shoulder do you like more? this one (points to one of my shoulders) or this one (my other shoulder)?" and he wrapped is arm around me and pulled me close. He pulled me so close i was nearly sitting on him. It felt funny, because he's REALLY shy and we really aren't too close. Afterwards, like weeks later, it became our little inside joke. So i told him the joke and put my arm around him (just acting like a friend) and then he put his arm on me. The last day before winter break a big group of my friends went downtown to hang out. He carried my backpack the whole time. We were crossing the street and i felt his fingers touch mine. It was like he was trying to hold my hand. Me and my best friend were gonna head home, but then he pulled me to the side (everyone else was taking group pictures) and he just instantly hugged me. It was the longest hug ever. I was pressed up against him and it was really weird. I've never had someone hug me like that. It was forever. At least it felt this way. I tried pulling away because i wasn't expecting that at all. But he pulled me back into a hug. Once he was done hugging me, he slowly pulled away and looked right into my eyes. I was really confused what was going on, so i kept looking around. He said "See you next year" (in 2013 haha). And then we both walked back to the group. My friend i guess saw that whole thing and texted me "Do you guys have a thing" In all honesty, i don't know if i like him the way he likes me.
I can't stop thinking about that hug. Its been 2 weeks. I think about it at least 2 times a day. I want to relieve that moment every day. I think I like him, but (as mean/weird) as this sounds, i don't know if i want to like him. I think i'm falling hard. I never really thought about everything he's done for me....
BUT, theres this other guy. And i like him. But i don't know if he likes me. During the beginning of the school year, I was at a High school football game. His little sister (who is the cutest thing to walk this planet) said "You're pretty! My brother would like you!!!" because i was in my cheer uniform (middle school. We were preforming at halftime) and then she drug me over to him and yelled "SHES PRETTY!!!!" and he was like "Yes, she is very pretty" I'm not sure if that was just because he wanted to agree with her, or if he actually thought i was pretty. Then, we went trampolining (the guy i talked about earlier was there!) and he betted me that i couldn't do more back flips in a row. I beat him and he said "Good job my lil' cheerleader" (hes a football player, i'm a cheerleader). After band one day my binder ripped and half of my papers fell out. It was raining that day, so they all were ruined. He came out and said "Oh no. Here, let me help". He picked up all my papers and even carried some of my books (such a stereotypical move). He walked me to my class and put my books on my desk. We both are near-sided and we have the exact same type of glasses. So one day he took mine and gave me his for the day. At the end of the day he said "take your glasses back. They're only cute on you". And when i text him i'll say something like "gah! oops i'm stupid" in a joking way, and he'll say "no. you're not."
As you can tell, their two different people. I just don't know who i like anymore. Which one does it seem like I like? Does it sound like either one of them like me? It'd be helpful if you guys gave me answers before Monday, when we go back to school. That way i can get it off of my mind a bit. One more thing. What did the hug the first guy mention mean exactly?

Answer
I think you probably have a crush on both of them and they both like you. That is all entirely possible. There are a few signs you can look for to figure out if he likes you. If he pays attention to you, likes to be around you, is polite and respectful, seems to watch you when he thinks you are not looking, listens to what you have to say and is interested in it, tries to find reasons to talk to you and to be around you even when he doesn't need to be around you, does not expect anything from you in terms of favors, makes frequent eye contact with you, his face lights up when he sees you, puts you first all the time even ahead of himself, then most likely he likes you as more than a friend. And watch how he treats other girls. If he treats you differently and sort of in s more special way, that is a good sign.

Ok so I really want to get a really cool backpack for this upcoming school year. I would make my own since my request is too much but I only have $64 bucks which in my area wont pay to make a whole backpack. I want like a backpack that makes you think "Wow shes a cool girl" Lol Um no messenger bags or tote bags. I don't care about the brand name as long as it looks really cool, because right now i'm having a hard time finding any backpacks that i really like.
It can be any color except pink. Multicolored, white, or black, light blue is preferred though
So you can get an idea here are some backpacks that I like but not a whole lot:

Those ^^^^^ I like the way the backpacks are structured, like with the flap on the top, not the designs. Something you would see a girl in high school where.
I just want this to be really cool because I might have this backpack for a long time so i don't want to be stuck with a really bland and typical backpack. Nothing extremely girly please and/or extremely plain.

Like what type of backpack made you literally stop and look for a while because it was just that awesome. lol

Any suggestions of backpacks that are unique and really show stopping cool I'd be glad to look at.
Thanks c:
I like Nike but ehh... not exactly my cup of tea. Thanks for taking your time to suggest though!

Good 1 to 2 person tents for stargazing?

One of my favorite parts about camping is stargazing on a clear night. Any recommendations for good 1-2 person tents with an all mesh dome for an unobstructed night sky panorama? Preferably up to the $150 range.

Answer
Coleman and many other firms do tents with a mesh inner. My Coleman Viper is my favourite stargazing tent because it's high enough in the middle to put a telescope mount inside, it's a side opener so it's easy to get stuff in and out, and as a full tent with the flysheet over it's very good in wet weather.
It's been on hundreds of trips and it's never been a problem even once, even in a blizzard in the Andes at 14 000 feet.
It's off the product list now but you might still find one in the shops for $60 or so.
It's £30 now in UK, half the price I paid and it would be a bargain at $150.
It's kept going when more expensive tents have ripped in the strong Atlantic winds sending salt-ridden wet air over our local hills (Aahhh, Paradise! Even the rabbits wear Goretex around here, haha) and has never leaked even in the horizontal rain we get.
There are similar models with a mesh inner from Coleman (and others) but that Viper was one of their really good ones.
Shame they stopped making it.
The bag it comes in is a thick strong PVC bag which I use as a dry bag for river crossings on backpacking trips.
The tent is pointed at both ends so it's stable in a high wind. It's a really great little tent.

I use it nearly every week for stargazing trips to the hills to get a dark sky away from the town lights and for weekend backpacking treks, sometimes combining backpacking walks with astronomy nights.

There are observatory dome tents as well designed to put a telescope in for wind shelter but they get expensive.
Scroll down for some details from a user about the Kendrick Observatory tent. It's big and heavy, not easy to carry but quick to put up and very good at doing the job it's made for and at least you'll know such things exist even if $400 and a mule to carry it aren't ideal territory for some simple stargazing.
If you've spend $2000 on a nice big scope however it's a relatively small expense to have a portable observatory for it.

Good Backpack preferably comfortable but sturdy?

I am looking for a good comfortable backpack please links would be appreciated

Answer
Aren't we all, I have a North face and a Gregory one is about a 1000ci bigger then the other. The North face I use for short 1-3 day trips, the Gregory for multi week trips. Comfort and fit is going to be up to you you have to try them out. When you do, load them up as you would go trekking, that way you will get a better idea how well they fit and comfortable it is. what should she be equipped with? i mean in terms of clothes, backpack, lunch pack.and what should she have learned by now in terms of lessons and milestones?what does potty training really mean.should she be able to go to the bathroom by herself? i mean she doesnt know how to clean up herself after peeing or doing potty.how much she should be knowing about using a school bathroom.

Answer
She will need clothes for all different weather, here are some examples:
- Raincoat
- Warm pants
- Warm shirt
- Shorts
- Tee shirt
- Tennis shoes
- Rain boots
Usually, they will require that she has at least one extra pair of clothes at school all the time but other than that you can just dress her for what the weather is that day, layers are always good too because she will not be under prepared but she can take clothes off if she gets too hot.

Some preschools provide lunch and others require you to bring your own so you will need to check with the school. She does not need a backpack but it will probably be handy to carry things back and forth such as clothes, lunch, and art projects.

Here are the basic academic things the other kids in her class will know but are probably not required by the school:
- Singing AND saying the ABC's
- Identifying some or all of the letters in the alphabet and knowing the sounds of some or all of them
- Counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's
- Adding and subtracting simple numbers such as 1+1 or 5-2
- All the colors, shapes, opposites
- Drawing simple figures like shapes, people, and houses
- Sharing, taking turns, and good manners
- Maybe starting to read simple words
- Putting on her own clothes. including tying shoes, buttons, zippers, etc.
- Using scissors
Again, these are the things she should know at her age but preschools don't usually require it.

She should be able to use the bathroom on her own, including wiping herself off, flushing, and washing her hands afterward. They will usually send someone to stand outside the door while she is going but she should be pretty independent and they will not help her wipe off. If you want to, you can teach her basic things about using school bathrooms such as covering the seat with toilet paper.

If you think she is not quite caught up I would suggest sending her to a family daycare, they are much happier and friendlier places for children to grow up but since she is going to kindergarten soon anyways I suppose it won't hurt for her to get used to it.

Good luck!

What is a typical parent response when walking in on son having sex?

Lynn <3

Not the daughter but the son. How would the mother react?

Answer
Age? I'm assuming he's living with me, not in his own home. If he's married, then I'd walk out and not say anything. If he wasn't, I'd pick up the closest long thing and start hitting and screaming, tell the girl to go to the bathroom and toss her clothes in there, and there'd be a big fight. Probably worse if his dad walked in on him.

Please note, he WOULD know that's how we'd react. Maybe not that I'd grab his backpack and start swinging it, but he would be really stupid to have sex under my roof when he's not married.

Edit: Suzy Q. It's about respect and access. First, my family is conservative, in beliefs and culture, and sex before marriage is not something I'm going to accept in my home. Not with my 40 year old sister and her 2 year fiance, not with my 14 year old kid when I have one. It's a standard, same goes for drinking or smoking or doing drugs. Second, I repeat I'm against sex before marriage, and especially underage sex. That means that I want to make it as inconvenient and problematic for them as possible, not give them a door with a lock, a box of condoms, and say "have at it." By saying "Not in my home" I take one more convenient place off the list. This may interest you. Those in my family who said "I'd rather it be done here where I can make sure they're safe" all had teen pregnancies. No joke. The more they are free to have sex, even safe sex, the more likely they're going to get an STD, a pregnancy, or emotionally be so connected to that person it messes with their life. Third, it's again respect for my beliefs. If you know someone doesn't wear shoes in their home you don't wear shoes in their home. If you know someone doesn't swear, you don't swear around them. How in the world do you expect your kids to respect your beliefs about sex before marriage if you allow them to actively disobey that in the home?

I'll say this too. Even if my religion wasn't very conservative, I've seen sex in teen years screw up way too many people. I have never met anyone where having sex in their teen years didn't mess up what they did for the next 5-10 years at least. It creates a bond, it's not just peeing in a pot. If you're not ready for a lifetime bond, you should not be having sex, and especially teens who have such impulse control problems and blowing it out of proportion problems have no business having sex. There's a reason why waiting until at least 18 is actually gaining in popularity, and it's due to studies showing that not waiting increases risks for everything from substance abuse to getting in trouble at school to going to college.

I believe in safe sex education as well, and my kids will know everything about that before they're 12 is the plan, and the basics long before then. However, they're not going to have sex under my watch, under my roof. I'll go crazy mom on them and scare them half to death so if they EVER start that where I might be around they nervously look over their shoulder every 30 seconds. There's a reason folks don't speed past a police car.

And it would be worse if it was my husband catching our son. With my daughter, it would be similar if not the same.

How can I look my age?

high school backpacks for girls 2012 image

Rachel

People think I'm 11 and I'm actually 15. Plus I'm really short (only 5ft.) Once my teacher looked me dead in the eye and asked in front or the entire class if I'm even old enough for high school and people laughed. Only boys younger then me ever ask me out or guys that are like 20 but that's kinda gross. I want a boyfriend but one that's actually my age. I just turned 15 two weeks ago and I don't want to be "cute" or "adorable" anymore. I don't want to dress like a whore or anything but how can I look my age?

Answer
Hi! That sounds rough. :( I have some ideas though.
If you are allowed, wear some makeup! If you are not, even just a shimmery lip balm or lip gloss will make you look more mature! Here is a link to a simple and school appropriate makeup look.
http://nounaryustyle.com/2012-makeup-tips-for-teenagers-girls/eye-makeup-tips-for-asian-women/

Also, dress up a bit, try simple patterns instead of rainbows, cat hoodies, (not being mean but lots of clothing from Stiches or Streetwear Society) I don't know how you dress haha so I'm not accusing you of dress like a seven year old either, just tips!
Try spending more money on less clothes so you can get a few very nice quality outfits.
Also, possibly use a cute tote or purse instead of a backpack.
http://pollymay.wordpress.com/2012/08/28/schoolcollegeuniversitylife

As for the hair, try searching some YouTube videos. Kaileemckenzie is a great role model and is very helpful same with cutegirlshairstyles! Instead of just leaving your hair directly down, curly a few pieces, twist back you bangs, put it in a side bun, anything goes!

What to keep in my Back-to-School bag?

Sweetheart

I am going to be a Sophomore in high school this year and I want to be organized and prepared. I want to keep what I bring with me to school at a minimum because I don't want to be carrying extra bulk. What, in your experience, is handy to have on you while at school that doesn't take up so much space in a backpack/purse. And what do you bring with you to school?

Answer
Here's some ideas of what to keep in your bag :

â¢A well organized binder for all your classes or a couple small ones for each core class (English, History, Science, and Math usually)

â¢Planner for the 2011-2012 school year. Look for ones by good brands like 5 Star (You can find 'em at Walmart). They help ya keep track of all your homework and things like hair appointments.

â¢Calculator. Ya usually need one for tricky math stuff. Teachers probably provide them for students who don't have them when needed, but it's best to have a calculator you already know how to use in a jiffy.

â¢Pencils & pens in a pencil case. I always had a big supply of mechanical pencils, pens, sharpies, colored pencils, and highlighters in a pencil case that I could clip into my everything binder. They're very lightweight and you'll always be sure to have a pencil -- even if you leave one in your last class.

â¢A flash drive. They're small and lightweight. You can keep it in your pencil case for those times when you just can't finish that English essay during school hours and wanna bring it home.

â¢Your cell if you have one. I always kept mine in the front pocket of my backpack. Never took it out, but it felt good having it there in case of an emergency - you never know!

â¢Sticky notes. I jotted stuff down I needed to remember and stuck 'em to something I pulled out every night- like my math notebook. They come in great colors and won't add much weight to your bag.

â¢Extra paper. Always keep another notebook or a stash of unopened lined paper in your bag. They don't add too much weight and you never know when you'll run outta room. TIP: You don't have to put the paper in at the beginning of the year. You can wait till you start to fill up your notebooks.

â¢Book covers. Usually required and extremely lightweight. You can put 'em on your books as soon as you get them.

â¢Keep a small kit in your locker/backpack for those moments you might get caught off guard. Here's what to put in it : A couple dollars, hair bands, breath mints, tampons (or pads or both) and tissues. You'll always be ready for whats coming and if you put it all in a discreet box or bag, nobody will ever know!

â¢If ur a girl (I'm assuming you are), then you can also keep perfume, deodorant & other stuff you think you need.

Good Luck!

TIP: Put heavier, bigger books closer to your back for less weight & use a bag with padded shoulder straps. You can also keep it lightweight by cleaning it out once or twice a week.

Q. I'm talking about over the ear headphone.

I've thought of Beats by Dre headphones but i've heard bad reviews about them and that they are justa fashion statement and not very good. Except you are a fan of Heavy Bass rap music.

I like to listen to Metal etc basically i listent to everything. Except country. Well other than that..

Do you know of any god headphones that a re good for most genres, good bass and that are durable?

I hate when my headphones go out in one ear. I need something that will last.

Answer
I totally agree with what you said about Dr Dre headphones. Too spendy and mostly just for fashion.

I had the same issue as you, and I ended up getting the Sennheiser HD 558. Good price/quality ratio. Most. Comfortable. Headphones. Ever! They also sound great. I LOVE music - all kinds, too. And they really perform well. I love them so much I plug them into my sound system so I can play games, watch TV and movies with them.

I'm fairly rough with my headphones (stupid me) and I travel with them on planes, in backpacks, etc. I've had mine for 6 mo and they're still tough as nails and perfect condition.

How to plan an European vacation? Any websites that have trips planned out?

Jeremy F

I'm currently planning my honeymoon to Europe but I'm not sure where to start. We've never been to Europe so we want to see what Europe has to offer. Any advice?

Answer
Hey Jeremy-

Congrats! I backpacked through Europe a year or so ago and I saw a lot! Depending on your budget I would recommend going with a travel company like Rick Steves which is pricey, but gets excellent reviews. My parents went on a Rick Steves vacation about 5 years ago and have been going back to them ever since. Remember that you will be with a smallish group for the whole time, and some of those travelers can be a little crazy!

If you are on a tight budget I suggest getting a Eurail pass and creating your own tour. I made a website of how to save money while traveling and it has links to places to stay, cheap tour companies, etc. Picking your own travel spots and moving at your own pace can be really great and save you a lot of money.

I hope that helped a little!

I need a sturdy yet reasonably priced Archaeological field bag?

ruby_7

I have had multiple backpacks since my first field school but it always seems that my trowels cut right through them. I know they make leather sheaths for them but, I know me and I doubt I would actually use them. So do you know of a good sturdy bag that would be great for field work? Thanks :)

Answer
Duluth Trading Company makes some nice canvas, waxed cotton and leather shoulder bags and totes that are reasonably priced and well made. (don't confuse them with Duluth Pack, which is a different company that also makes wonderful canvas bags but they cost an arm and a leg).

http://www.duluthtrading.com

I like the reddish one in the upper right on this page:

https://www.google.com/#q=duluth+trading+company+purses&hl=en&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=Q9FlUZLzBZbk4APR_IHADw&ved=0CEsQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&fp=77f4a17ed2126bc8&biw=847&bih=388

I got my first field bags for geology and archaeology field camp from Army surplus stores. If you can find the REAL military surplus bags, especially the ones from NATO or German army stock, they are heavier and better made than the "Made in China" reproduction junk that a lot of supposed "surplus" stores have.

L.L. Bean has some canvas messenger bags that are fairly reasonable too.

By the way, Duluth Trading also makes excellent women's clothing for wearing on field sites including their "firehose canvas" strech cargo pants, vests and shorts and their long sleeved work shirts with the bi-swing back and long tails. Their tee shirts also hold up extremely well and have extra long tails so your butt isn't hanging out when you are crouched over peeling back your excavation unit with a teaspoon and toothbrush. They have great sun hats too, and miscellaneous gee-gaws that come in handy in field camps. The clothes are a little pricey but well worth it. They look great and wear like iron. Watch for clearance sales -- they practically give stuff away sometimes when they change designs and mark down the old stock.

Tip on trowel storage: hardware and building supply and paint stores sell plastic half moon shaped small paint cups with a handle that you can put about a pint of paint in and carry around or even hang on a ladder while painting trim. If you stash one of these in your field bag you can drop your trowels in, tips down, and they won't wear through the material or get mud all over the inside of the bag. I shove my work gloves in the plastic container too, to keep the trowels from shifting around and rattling. You can make a similar pocket holder for them by slicing the top off a cheap plastic flat canteen or flattened shape water bottle (there is a bottled water brand called "Fred" that makes the perfect shape for this, looks like a soft clear plastic gin flask.) http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.somethingtocroweabout.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/fred-water.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.somethingtocroweabout.com/2012/09/25/meet-fred-bottled-water-with-a-personality/&h=775&w=600&sz=53&tbnid=3dNOtMotSN8QlM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=70&zoom=1&usg=__xjnc_4fJIDnLms96th6lnExA5m4=&docid=y4Xi2aqhz_hNBM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=rtZlUcjBOfHE4APzuYGACg&ved=0CHcQ9QEwCA&dur=453

I just bought a tote bag a few days ago, and I also have a messenger bag. But which bag works best for a high school girl? Or is a normal back pack actually better? Opinions/advice please.
Just wondering. Thanks. :)
BTW we have lockers, and can't bring our backpacks/ totes/ whatever to class. So the only time I'll be using it is after school/ before school. If that makes a difference in your answer. :)

Answer
messenger bags aren't in fashion anymore :p

would 7-10 year old kids like a backpack or a duffle bag as a gift?

I have to give a freebie gift to children aged 7-10 years. I've noticed they either carry a cartoon backpack (Barbie, Ben10, Batman, etc) or a branded backpack (Nike, Adidas, Puma) to school.
Would these kids appreciate a well design backpack or a well design duffle (gym) bag to use for travel and hobby classes.

I am having dreams of my childhood home. What does it mean?

girls school backpacks for elementary image

eb_genius_

Over the last 2 weeks I've have three dreams of my childhood home. It really interested me because the last week I've had 2 dreams about it in the last couple of days. Last nights dream of my childhood home was very interesting.

I remember being outside and walking up then down a bridge I normally used to walk before heading to my elementary school. I didn't go across the bridge just stayed on the slope leading up to the bridge crossing point as I interacted with someone for a bit then they left.

The part that stood out in my head the most is that when I entered my old house I remember going upstairs and entering my room and their was a woman there. I placed my backpack down and in my head I remember feeling like I was moving in and then looked at the wall to see a ton of posters (rock bands, comic characters even though I don't have any of that stuff on my room walls now or even follow it as a hobby) and stuff that were kind of interesting. The woman seemed nice and I remember thinking this was my new "roommate" that lived in the house as well.

In a previous dream one thought I remember having in the house was "We moved from here and now we moved back here after never wanting to live in this area. I guess it's comfortable" each time I was comfortable but it's just odd because I haven't dreamed of that place in many years.

Any ideas would help. I've read online many things such as it may mean you should go into new ventures or going into that room may mean you like your privacy but that girl was there and i was comfortable with her (and she was cute lol) so that wasn't much privacy especially since it was a roommate.

What to expect in middle school?

Okay, I'm starting middle school and I think I need help, like on what to expect. I'm going to LCO, Larose Cut Off Middle School in Louisiana. We had a tour of the school - a huge school - and it looks great. Unlike my other school, it has lockers, a gym, more than one building, and most have two floors. What is there to expect in middle school? What can I do about bullies if any? And additional tips would be great. Thank you and God Bless!

Answer
Most middle schoolers wear a t-shirt and jeans. As far as shoes, sneakers or skateboarder shoes are seen on most feet. If you want to start being yourself, now is the time.

Lockers: Some middle schools don't have lockers, but most of them do, and you will need them. Try to have a place for everything. If you have a heavy backpack, put in on the bottom. Put coats and sweaters on the hangers. And put books and things you need for the day on the top shelf. Sometimes, you will have to share a locker, in which you must work that out with a locker partner. Never dump things on the floor of your locker. You will be amazed at what you will find at the bottom when you clean it our at the end of the year.

Homework: There is more homework than in elementary school. Homework should be done first thing when you get home. Right now, school is the most important thing in your life.

School bus: School buses in real life are not like the ones in movies or on TV. Most buses are not fun. If your school lets you bring an IPod, then listen to it on the bus. If you can't bring an IPod, then bring a book to read or something. It's usually rather difficult to do homework when the bus is jumping up and down and there are people being annoying. If you do homework on the bus, then sit in the front because it's a less bumpy ride. Find some friends or make some that ride the bus. It will make your trip to school more enjoyable.

Teachers: The school's good or bad reputation does not define what the teachers will be like. Every teacher is different, and you should just adjust to the way the class is (e.g. if your science teacher does not like interruption, practice on being quiet in science class). Not all teachers are "evil" and "out to get you". Usually teachers have better things to do than torture little kids and fail them all. That is usually all myths. Remember, teachers WANT you to do well! They don't want to sit in a classroom all afternoon after the final bell rings grading some test with all F's!

In class: Focus in all of your classes, but don't become a zombie. Have fun in class with people you know, but make sure that your teacher does not get annoyed with you. Be quiet when your teacher is talking, and definitely be respectful.

Grades: Along with focusing in class and completing all of your homework, grades should also be one of your areas of focus. Strive to do your best and be happy with the grade you achieve. The study habits you develop now will carry through to high school and college/university.

* When taking notes, think about what the teacher considers important, because that stuff will most likely end up on a test.

Friends: Find people who are nice to you and seem like great people. Sometimes you won't really be friends with anyone in your classes and all of the people you're friends with are in other classes. That's okay. Maybe they will be in your class next year. Ask your parents if you can let some of your friends sleep over sometimes or if you can meet them for lunch somewhere.

Crushes: There will be way more boys and girls than who was in your elementary school. Remember, school IS the most important in your life right now. If you do find that special boy or girl, make sure he/she doesn't interfere with your school work. Most of the time, middle school relationships don't work out. Save your love life for high school.

Lunch: You'll probably have more selection now that you are in a bigger school. Make sure you have your lunch money and money for soda's and snacks. Plan a spot where you and your friends will sit together.

Which national parks in Southern Utah should I visit if I only have a week?

marath0ner

I would like to visit the national parks of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona (Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef and the Grand Canyon), but I only have a week. I know that I can't see them all in one week, so I am trying to choose which ones to see on this trip (possibly spring '07).

I would like your opinion on which of these parks are a 'must see' and why. In the parks that you recommend, which hikes do you recommend, and why?

We like to hike and either camp or stay in modest accomodations. We are two fit adults and two pre-teen kids.

Feel free to include in your response any parks in the area (S. UT / N. AZ) that I have omitted.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
You are not going to be disappointed with any of those places. Colorado Plateau has some of the best hiking and most impressive natural scenery in the world. I have been to all the places you mention, and here is my take on them.

Zion - With its flowing river and many trees, this is the most relaxing and serene of the parks. Great hikes of all difficulty levels. Emerald Pools is a nice easy one. Angels Landing (if you are not afraid of heights) is amazing. Hiking up the river into the narrows is also a classic (but may be difficult in spring due to high water). Camp cheap at the park campgrounds, nearby Springdale is pretty pricy (Zion Pizza and Noodle Company has good food at good prices).

Bryce - Pretty colorful rocks and some very nice day hikes, but (in my opinion) not as big or varied as the other parks and much more out of the way. Navajo trail (through 'Wall Street' and Peek-a-boo trail are nice day hikes through the heart of the formations).

Arches - Very cool scenery - the numerous arches look like something from Disneyland or a movie set (opening scenes of Indian Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed here). Mostly driving to overlooks, but a couple of nice short hikes. Devils Garden trails passes a number of neat arches. Hiking up to Delicate Arch (seen on the Utah license plate) at sunset is a southwest photography must. Right next door to town of Moab (with a wide range of eating and lodging options).

Grand Canyon North Rim - Higher elevation and less developed (thus less crowded) than the South Rim. The best rim to visit during summer, but is closed (due to snow) from mid-October to mid-May. Many nice overlooks, but few short day hikes. Campground near the lodge or 'at large' in nearby national forest.

Canyonlands - Desert backpackers paradise. This is a huge area of some of the wildest land in the lower 48 and many interesting rock formations. Very little in the way of visitors centers and drive-to spots - you really need to do some hiking or backpacking to appreciate it. My choice for best day hike is through the rock fins and spires of the Chesler Park trail off the Elephant Hill road trail head in the Needles district (south of Moab). The Islands in the Sky district seems to be more aimed toward 4x4 trails while the Maze district is very rugged multi-day expedition country.

Capital Reef - Sort of like a Zion meets Canyonlands - a mixture of rugged desert canyons and shady river valleys. It is way off the beaten path, which means less crowds than the others. Not explored this as much as the others, but the narrows of the Grand Wash are a nice day hike. Very nice looking shady campground. Few facilities nearby.

Others in the area worth mentioning:
Natural Bridges National Monument - Often overlooked, this is a very pretty sandstone canyon with three huge arches stretching across the entire canyon (you walk under them). A great day hike and rarely crowded.

Mesa Verde National Park - A little out of your zone (extreme SW corner of Colorado), but worth considering if you are going to be focusing on the Moab area. Probably the most impressive cliff dwellings in the US.

Monument Valley, Arizona/Utah - Right near Four Corners. Very impressive scenery (where Stagecoach and many other westerns were shot). Not much hiking, but a nice little driving tour through the mesas. Be sure to visit nearby Goulding Trading Post.

Antelope Canyon - This is the famous slot canyon just outside of Page (near Lake Powell). You would recognize the photographs of it. Now administered by the Navajo Nation - pay a small fee and wander through Lower Antelope on your own (very cool). Have to have a guide for Upper Antelope (which I think is less impressive).

Grand Gulch, Utah - On BLM land south of Natural Bridges. Hike into a beautiful sanstone canyon with some of the best preserved Anasazi ruins in the southwest. No established camping spots nearby.

The Wave - Famous sandstone formation on the Arizona/Utah border between Kanab and Page. This is an excellent day hike - the weird carved rock formations look like something from another planet - never seen anything like it. Only drawback is that there are only a few daily permits raffled off each morning at the Paria Ranger Station.

Escalante - Grand Staircase - The Esclante area is just being discovered as an excellent region for canyon hiking and backpacking. Many classic hikes through slot canyons and past arches and waterfalls. Lower Calf Creek Falls is a nice day hike to a beautiful waterfall and pool (north of town of Escalante).

As mentioned, you could happily spend a week at most of these places and not be dissappointed. My preferences of the above would be as follows:
Famous / Grand Scenery: Zion, Arches, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, Mesa Verde
Peaceful and Pretty with Fewer Crowds - Capital Reef, Grand Canyon North Rim, Natural Bridges, Escalante
Hiking Bliss - Canyonlands, Grand Gulch, Bryce, Zion, Escalante

Zion-Bryce-Grand Canyon would be a good combination if you are visiting during May or later. Prior to May, the north rim of the canyon will be closed, in which case I would recommend hitting the Moab area and doing Arches, Canyonlands and (if you don't mind driving more) Monument Valley and Natural Bridges and/or Grand Gulch. If you really want to get away from the crowds and big towns do a combination of Capital Reef and Escalante.

Seeking an amazing place in USA to camp in Jan. Where do you recommend? What should i see?How do i get there?

Anne

I'm interested in taking a week off work and doing a solo trip somewhere in the states. I love camping, is there anywhere warm enough to camp in January? I know there are some great parks in the Southwest - what's a good one? what makes it special? Is there a way to get there without a car?

Answer
Are you talking about car camping or backpacking?

In southern Arizona and New Mexico, there are places that you can go camping, hiking and backpacking in winter (in fact, for some places winter is one of the better times).

One of the main winter hiking and camping spots is in the Superstition Mountains to the east of Phoenix. This is a large desert mountain range with many trails and camp spots. These are rugged igneous desert mountains and the home of the famous 'Lost Dutchman Gold Mine'. This place is brutal hot and dry in summer, so late fall to early spring is actually the best time.

The Kofa Mountains to the northeast of Yuma are also good in the winter and a bit more rugged and remote than the Superstitions. It is pretty far off the beaten path however and I would not recommend them to a person to the southwest on a solo hike.

Both of the above places will still be cool during the day and downright cold at night (though rarely below freezing), so you will still want to be prepared and dress accordingly.

I might also mention the famous Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. The rim is at 7000 feet elevation and can be quite cold (and even get snow) in winter, but as you down into the canyon, it gets warmer with the lower elevations until it can be quite comfortable at Phantom Ranch at the bottom. In fact, I now make a point of doing my Grand Canyon hikes in winter (just got back from an overnight trip) because the crowds are lower, it is easier to get rooms and permits, and the cool weather is nice for hiking - just be prepared with clothing and equipment.

Canyonlands National Park near Moab in southern Utah is another one that is do-able in winter (and probably better then than in summer). This is one of the least developed and most rugged places in the southwest with many miles of rocky desert canyons, slopes and ridges. There is very little development or roads and wide open camping and hiking options (both trail and free roaming). Because of its remoteness and lack of development, this can be rough country though unless you really know what you are doing.

As for transportation - unfortunately, the western US is the automobile lifestyle capital of the world. Public transportation in Arizona and New Mexico ranges from poor to non-existant. You really need a car to get to most places, although there are various bus services that you could probably use to get from Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix up to the Grand Canyon and back.

Where can I find something like a camping supply expo?

I'm in Illinois, and want to find something like an expo for different new camping supplies. Idk if this even exists? But is there something like this at maybe a gun show or something? any suggestions are appreciated. And I know there are websites with tons of stuff, but if like to see it in person before I rush to buy.

Answer
Visit a larger REI store. Many kinds of gear are displayed or set-up. Much of the emphasis is on high-quality and lightweight backpacking gear, far superior to what you will find in many shops. Hoffman Estates has Cabela's. Bass Pro is another interesting outlet for cheaper gear, but not high-end equipment.

The best way to find demonstrations of camping equipment is to meet other campers either at developed campgrounds or on remote backpacking ventures. Owners of gear are usually very happy to provide you with recommendations and demonstrations of gear. If you are looking for backpacking gear, then Backpacker Magazine provides reviews. You Tube offers many demonstration videos. The Meet Up groups may assist you as well.

How do I hide pads in my backpack?

Q. I bought this mesh backpack at WalMart, which just like has a million holes in it and you can see everything, because I thought it was cool, than I come home and realize I can't put pads in it without everyone seeing. Should I put them in like a little make up pouch? Or should I hide them? Or should I just stick them in my backpack and not care to admit my vagina bleeds at school?

Don't be afraid if someone sees your pads/tampons. Every girl gets it. No reason to feel ashamed.

Im trying to find a site where they sell the baby carrier backpacks, they are cloth and usually tan there is no metal frame of anything. Does anyone know where to find one?

Answer
DO NOT GET THE SNUGLI, bjorn, or others like this. They are bad for babies spine and hips, and soon hurt mom's back. Good ones that distribute weight correctly are the Ergo, the Baby Hawk, the Beco and similar brands. You pay much more, but you can comfortably carry a 25 pound 2 year old in these carriers. The good carriers have baby sitting on their bums, the snugli dangles baby from the crotch.

I have used the Ergo for a 25 pound 2 year old, and I loved my ring sling from this site. I'm now using a Baby Hawk Oh Snap for the 2 yr old, I'm in a baby wearing network in town and we all share slings and carriers.

Does having a heavy backpack stunt upper body growth?

Xcal

I have a short upper body, so I think this might be the reason. I weigh 110 pounds and probably have a 15 pound backpack, what do you think?

Answer
Jane Sadler, a physician at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas, said children's growth plates could be affected by undue stress. This would not stunt growth but may cause the early onset of arthritis in later life.

The experts recommended investing in relatively light backpacks, which place the weight on the shoulders, and with adjustable straps to prevent heavy loads from moving or being slung lower down the back.

Sorry buddy, sometimes genetics just suck.

How should I dress during my first day of ninth grade?

Jevorlin

I am switching to a different junior high or maybe an alternative school for ninth grade. I'm feeling really anxious. I do not have any clue over what to wear for my first day of ninth grade. My style is Forever 21, Journeys, Ross, Roxy, T.J. Max, and Wet Seal. Also, do ninth grade girls carry backpacks or purses usually? Right now I am in the eighth grade and I have to walk to my current junior high, so I have to use a backpack. By the way, I am not sure about what style of shoes are really in, too.

Answer
The best outfit you can wear are your favorite jeans that make your ass look good, and a regular t-shirt or tank. Its simple but you will be one of the only girls that doesnt look like you spent 2 hours in the mirror before coming to school. That is way more attractive than looking dressed up. Dont put a bunch a makeup on but enough to look nice. Do your hair simple also. Just take a purse and a binder. Wear simple shoes like vans with white socks.

What is the best double stroller out of these options::::

Phil & Teds
Baby Jogger City Select Double
Kolcraft Contours
Graco DuoGlider

Any reviews?

Answer
Most definitely the Baby Jogger City Select! I have one myself and I love it for several reasons

1. Can be used as double, or single when one gets too big for it (and then back again if you have another!
2. the option of the bassinet casing for a seat, which later converts back, also love the carseat adapters... very easy to use and remove.
3. Super easy to fold up, and fold FLAT. All in one simple motion
4. Lots of storage options. The storage area underneath expands, and the handlebars have lots of accessory options, including full size backpacks. And, they don't tip even when you have a lot of weight on the handle bars.
5. Very maneuverable. I live in Boston with legendarily uneven sidewalks. I can get around just fine, and without too much bouncing.
6. Accessories: a self leveling drink holder (you have no idea how great that is on hilly roads). Storage cover- compact enough to use as carry-on on international flights. Belly bar- instead of food tray (also available) the belly bar gives something for kids to grab onto and allows them to lean out more. This was perfect for the zoo and watching the duckies go by.
7. Adorable! It does not look like any other stroller out there, yet has a nearly old world charm in the dark colors (I got black). I get questions all the time on it.
8. great if you baby wear- I wore my infant in a wrap while pushing my twins in the stroller. The handlebar was just the right height for me not to struggle.

Downsides? Can be costly to get new accessories, not the best 'jogger' but will do ok, not usually on sale.

Can you download Kindle for PC onto a netbook that has Windows CE? I don't think you can, but curious?

Advice Ple

I'm curious if it's possible. I'd like to be able to find my kids text books in ebook form so that they don't have to bring their books home all the time. I can't barely lift my daughters backpack.

Answer
I'm sorry. You can see "Which operating systems are compatible with Kindle for PC?" in the official page here, and you'll know the Kindle for PC doesn't support Windows CE:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200395750&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

I'm not sure if you'll consider to get the Kindle device instead. It is more handy, and reading on the screen of Kindle is much better compared to reading on computer or notebook screen. I own the Kindle 2 and love it very much. I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get it:

Answer
Forget backpacks if there's any weight involved at all. Add a rear rack & panniers to the bicycle. Axiom makes a nice pannier set that can be easily put on & taken off the bike. They also sell great rear racks. Links below. Find 'em at your local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Jeans are made of cotton & trap in perspiration - sweat - causing chafing. Tight jeans make it worse.

Some carry camel backs that have hydration packs that can be filled with water, gatorade ect. Others actually carry full on backpacks to put screw drivers, wax, Lunch, ipod, money wallets cell phones anything that most people would leave in their cars or put in a locker.

I am not really planning on backpacking so I am more interesting in a one or two person tent that can withstand all weather possibilities. I know the best tents tend to be expensive but I would like to find the best one at the lowest price. So can you tell me which tents are best for what I want and if they are expensive or not? Thanks! :)

Answer
To be clear, Coleman tents leak just as much as most other manufacturers, but they will replace/repair the tent if you send it in. For the price, they are good tents and you can pick up something that will work for around $50.

For my money though, you can upgrade to an REI tent for about $100. Their Camp Dome 2 is a tried and true tent. It's well built and they will also work with you if there is a manufacturing defect. If you go to their website, the tent has been reviewed by over 100 people and received very positive remarks.

Lastly, if you buy from REI, if you try the tent out and decide you don't like it, you can usually return or exchange it as long as you didn't damage it.

Most tents are for 3 season use. A 4 season tent is designed to hold up the weight of snow during winter. If you aren't planning to use it during the winter, or it doesn't snow in your area, a 3 season tent is all you need.

How do I fold a military poncho into a backpack.?

Wesley

I once worked with a guy who knew how to fold/roll his poncho so that he was able to store all his gear in it like a backpack when we hiked. I can' t remember how he did it. This seems like the perfect solution for ultralight backpacking. This way your gear would be protected from the rain, and you could also use the poncho to build a shelter at night which would get rid of the weight from a tent. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
Those ponchos have small eyelets fitted round the hem so they can be used as a shelter strung between tree branches or from bits of line, or even pegs bashed into a rock face, and they can be strung up for collecting water, which runs into the large hood.
Whether issued to the US Army, UK, Germany, India, China, etc, they all work the same with just small changes in design.
They can certainly be used for wrapping your gear but it isn't a good idea if rain is expected unless you have another cover for yourself and then you may as well have used the extra weight on a lightweight backpack of which many models are available, and use the poncho for it's primary purpose of keeping the rain off you which it does very well.
It also can't be used for collecting water if it's wrapped round your gear keeping it dry and you can't use it for another intended purpose of providing a green cover for you to scrim up in....army for hiding.
Lay down on the grass or in the bushes, get the poncho over, and disappear. When it's opened out its long....twice the length it is when worn as a poncho.
For the military it's use is obvious but it's also good for wildlife watching and photography as an instant hide.
It also makes a good ground sheet big enough to wrap around you and although it doesn't provide a complete cover that way it can do a good job of keeping a wind off and keeping most of you dry while you sleep on the ground as an alternative to stringing it up to act as a roof over you.
If it was keeping your gear together all that gear is coverless when you use the poncho for anything else so using the poncho as bag for your stuff isn't a great idea.
Ponchos are not the only good thing from the military for camping out with.
Army combat blankets are green proofed nylon sheets like proofed nylon tent material, around seven feet by five which are intended to cover casuaties on stretchers in battle zones and they are very strong and totally waterproof and they make an excellent shelter.
One of my tents is made of three sewn together for two sides and a floor and bits of another cut and sewn on for the back and front. The seams are treated with seam sealand and then taped with seam tape which you can buy from camping shops.
The whole tent weighs just over a pound and cost peanuts for sealant and tape from a camping shop, and the used combat blankets from an ex-army store.
I also use a Coleman Raid, which weighs 980 grams, just under 2 lb and has stood up to fierce weather on my cold wet island home and on the Scottish Highlands and the Alps in Austria and Slovenia, and is one of the tents used by mountain runners on two-day events where you run with all your kit including a stove and food and camp overnight in some remote location before setting off on the second half of the course.
It's good fun, has some very fit and pleasant participants of both sexes, and worth a look if you like mountains and running and using very lightweight gear.
The Raid is old now and the new version called the Rigil is a bit wider so two people fit in it better although I've slept with two in the Raid quite often...err, very close and only really suitable for people intending to share a night together in a race but not as a normal camping tent for two. The Raid is tiny.
One carries the tent and the other carries the stove and pots which weigh about the same so the weight is shared and you share the food weight equally.
Good if you're running as a mixed team with your partner . You run even lighter than by yourself.
Here is the new version, the Rigil.
Coleman tents are excellent for the money. I have three for various uses, all well worth having.

I'm looking for a weekend hike, close to LA (3 hours or less away). Between 15 and 20 miles. If you know of anything let me know, and if you've hiked somewhere, tell me about it. Waterfalls are great, but not required. We've done both Mt Whitney (22 mi. in two and a half days) and the hot springs trail in Big Sur (20 mi. in two days). The hikers are a 46 year old female and her two daughters, 15 and 13, and possibly our 27 year old male cousin. (Cousin came to Big Sur, but not Whitney)

Let me know of anywhere you thing would be fun. Also, somewhere not too cold, like no snow. Our sleeping bags go down to 20 degrees i think)
