How can I get into hiking/backpacking/camping?

suarzonthe

I'm interested in taking up hiking/backpacking/camping through parks and the woods, especially in Northern Maine. Does anyone have any ideas of how to get started? Small goals? What would I need as far as equipment?

Answer
Well, I started doing some camping with my father at a young age. I joined the scouts and things went from there. I would suggest something along those lines - find a local club or group that enjoys doing camping and backpacking. You'll want to try camping first - backpacking is an acquired taste if you know what I mean. As far as hiking goes, go to an EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) or REI or LL Bean, and purchase a good pair of hiking boots and a good day pack(it doesn't have to be huge). Ask one of the sales associates to help you find the proper fit. Remember to break in your boots before hiking in them. Also get 2 Nalgene bottles - they're great. Get a guide book - it will have loads of helpful info. Try a few short hikes in the area and work your way up. After awhile try some 4000 footers. Camping and backpacking require a lot more equipment and a bit more experience. Always camp with at least one other person - and see if you can start out by borrowing some gear. Don't buy much until you're sure you want to get into the sport.

Does anyone know where to get a cute backpack with enough space?

I have a reputation at my school for having cute backpacks and I want to keep it up. I'm going to the 10th grade so I'm looking for one that has a good amount of space for textbooks and that's a pretty reasonable price (Not over $100). My favorite brands are Tokidoki, Kidrobot, Harajuku Lovers, and Volcom because they have pretty good backpacks that have cute, colorful prints and good amount of space, but of you could find me a brand that's similar to them then that would be great. :) Here are a couple pictures of my previous backpacks to give you an idea of the styles I'm into.

Kidrobot

Tokidoki (Yeah its not the backpack, since I couldn't find a pic of it, but imagine that same print on a backpack)

And since I've never had a Harajuku backpack I'll show you a pic of one of my bags by them.

My girlfriend got hers at Victoria's Secret from the PINK collection. They have been so popular that they are hard to find in stores though. There are a variety of colors ands styles. They are usually just under $40 but some cost more. They are very cute!.

Know any good backpacks that can meet my needs?

Caitlin

I'm looking for a backpack for my summer job as a camp counselor. We'll be taking a lot of field trips and I basically want a small-medium sized, light weight backpack that will be easy to carry around every where I go all summer. I will just need it to hold a folder for roll sheets and paperwork, first aid, water, sunscreen, change of clothes occasionally, lunch, phone, wallet, keys.

I'm not interested in any big hiking backpack with tons and tons of compartments and straps. So if you know of a style or have a review of one, I would really really appreciate it!

I really LOVE the Jansport Originals Right Pack, if that helps. But the only thing is that it doesnt have a side water bottle holder. I also like the North Face Recon style from what I've seen online...but It looks like it might be a bit too much. Anyone have any experience with it..? I wouldnt mind paying the price because I could use it as a school/laptop bag as well.

this one has a laptop sleeve, so you could use it after camp.

Amputee actors at the Boston Marathon disaster false flag alarm!?

Paul

"This image was taken by a third party photographer seconds after the first explosion. There is clear evidence of false flag staging here. The man in the red coat and baseball hat on the right is kneeling down giving directions to the guy in the white T-shirt. Also looking to this pair for direction are the woman sitting to the right and the man in a hood and sunglasses who set up the double amputee prosthetics.

Notice the relaxed posture and face of the hooded man. Notice also the calm prepared posture of the woman sitting down on the bottom right. See how her shirt sleeve is severely torn, yet her skin underneath is clean and clear of injury and blood. From where sheâs sitting look right to the bottom right corner and you can see an unmarked bottle of fake blood.

Look to the left and see the cowboy hat man standing there doing nothing. This is the same man who will pretend to hold the tourniquet of the fake amputee actor later on. Look to center of the photo and you will see the african woman moving herself away from the amputee actor since her shielding him from cameraâs job is over. Next to her is a woman with red hair leaning on her elbow.

http://buelahman.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/missing-legman.jpg?w=750&h=384

Compare this now with another photo taken seconds later. Putting them side by side is very helpful.

The man with the hood and sunglasses, who was just sitting up looking fine and healthy after fixing up the amputee actorâs prosthetics, is now on his back being evaluated by two people. Notice the rips in his jeans have no sign of blood or injury on the skin. The woman with red hair however is in the exact same pose as a minute ago. Meanwhile the double amputee actor is completely ignored by everyone when he is clearly in the most dire need of attention. There is a small amount of fake blood around him where the african lady shielding him used to be, she has disappeared What happened to her? Compare this photo with the first in my post.

http://buelahman.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/leg1.jpg?w=750&h=562

The african woman who was sitting up, shielding the hooded man and amputee actorâs prosthetic rigging, giving hand signals, looking left and right, having no visible blood or injuries, is now covered in blood and strapped into a spine board stretcher.

In a real medical scenario the amputee would receive immediate treatment or die from bleed out. The fact this actor woman is removed from the scene via stretcher while the double amputee is left on the ground is ludicrous. He would be dead from blood loss before they could even begin spinal assessment procedures involved in moving a patient to a stretched. Not to mention his blood loss would be over five liters, enough to cover the entire scene around these people in a thick puddle.

http://buelahman.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/2d1c4b60d453d6c2b6de52e90a76264c.jpg?w=750

From firsthand experience with trauma in the field of EMS work, this is not real. These are actors. This is all staged." There are a lot of other things I could say about this, but I think that this report is the best evidence that it was in fact staged. If it wasn't there couldn't have been actors
@michelle did you read what I posted and look at the pictures? I doubt it. Well go on, live your little life and shout god bless the usa - be a sheep, what they want you to be

Answer
Thank you for taking of your time to post question and include links (will try watching soon as possible). Since earlier today I have rushed through some articles which paint totally different pictures, since in some of them the photos are gruesome, but on other sites (like the big media ones, no such thing is shown).

I am not saying any of this was a conspiracy, nor that none of it took place, because just as I like having all proof in order to believe something, I also need proof to invalidate anything anyone comes up with, since there is always at least of thread of truth. Don't be upset if people should call you "conspiracy theorist" or worse--at least you are being read and responded to. My only question is: Why do some Americans get all up in arms when other people "see" and "notice" things that they obiously missed. Is it anyone's fault they DO NOT pay enough attention? Or that they believe in a "perfect little world where government KNOWS everything and everything will be alright?"

Don't be surprised if every time you ask a question, at least one person here in Yahoo will scream at you: "The terrorist is talking already, or writing, and confessing."

So what!

1) He could well be a terrorist, but who put him up to it?
2) Why didn't FBI investigate the elder brother further? Lives could have been saved!
3) Why would Americans still watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX et al, when it was UK's Daily Mail which "discovered" the probable involvement of Tamerlan (the elder brother) in the gruesome murder of three young men two years ago. Coincidentally the same year FBI had been surveilling him "supposedly"?
4) Do you think Americans care to know that the murder of those three young men was "ritualistic"?
5) Do Americans care that no police agency was able to come up with "any" leads"?

Oh, I'm sorry, their deaths would have ONLY been important if they had gotten up blown by a terrorist. Please excuse my ignorance there!

6) Do Americans care that NOT 1 single person is able to explain who the men with beige camo/cargo pants and black jackets, wearing black cap with Marine (skullhead) insignia, and each carrying black backpacks--one of which simply disappears not to be seen again--and one of the is holding a huge remote-like thing which some believe is a "radiation-detecting" instrument, can you believe that NO Americans except for a few dozen care to know why these men were there? Does it mean they received a tip that WMD's were going to be used????
7) Who was the man police told to strip NAKED completely, arrested and sat on police car?
8) If the "suspect" bombers did not rob the convenience store, why they did release the younger ones photo "at" the same convenience store?
9) The "unlucky" store got robbed at the same time it was visited by the terrorist?
10) Clearly the man in sweat dark pants with blue lines and jacket, facing down on the ground IS NOT Tamerlan***, but why is there so much blood on the ground near the police car to the extreme left of photo?

***This man's hair is straight, almost sandy and he had NOT a drip of blood on his face, while well, most by now must have seen the face of Tamerlan after the shooting! Aside the fact that a doctor made sure to tell the world "his entire body is full of bullets". NOT really so either by looking at photos supposedly release to "thousands of emails" by Boston police: The man on the morgue has a couple of bullets, and his face is unrecognizable, but it is nowhere near "riddled" with bullet holes!!!!

There are dozen more things which don't make any sense, but according to media and the public the important thing is that the "boy" who cannot speak by the way (probably never will),, has written down the necessary information to explain there were NO other terrorists and Tamerlan planned everything.

Where can I buy a tent in budapest.?

Joe

Hi. Im currently in krakow and moving onto budapest then croatia. We've decided to camp in croatia so need to purchase a tent as cheap as possible.. Say around £20-30

I know, theres a tesco in budapest but don't know if it sells tents. could anyone please tell me if they do, or anyother shop you know of.

Yhank you in advance for the answers.

Joe

Answer
There are many shopping malls in Budapest, almost everywhere. A big one is underground at the Nyugati metro station. There are many shops selling everything down there, I remember seeing luggage and backpacks, so a tent is very possible. It's central and easy to get to.

But more specifically, I know there is a camping store on Raday Utca not far from the Kalvin Ter Metro stop. I never went in it, but I know it's there. It's inbetween the Kalvin Metro and Matyas Utca. On the left side. It's small and hidden by resturants and cafes so you have to look.

Nyugati and Kalvin are on the same Metro line only about 5 stops apart, so it easy to go in between.

Cost effective camping/backpacking food?

Lockheed24

I need some suggestions for camping/backpacking food.

It must cover some of these points:

-relatively cheap - as compared to ready-made freeze dried/camping foods (like Mountain House)
-Lightweight - dehydrated, add water only type food etc.
-High energy/calorie content
-Healthy - not too much preservatives , artificial food colours/compounds, saturated fats etc.
-Can be found in major supermarkets like ASDA, Tesco etc.
-Can keep well in a backpack in summer conditions - i.e. not go off/rot/be crushed easily

So far I've discovered that peanut butter and flapjacks are a good snaking food for energy.

Instant dried meals like those by the 'Batchelors' brand seem ok but contain MSG and other flavour enhancers.

I already have several boxes of Seven OceanS standard emergency rations but they are quite heavy and boring in taste to consume regularly.

Answer
Trailmix will allow you to keep energy levels constant and will keep hunger away for quite sometime. I usually fill a gallon zip lock bag to last a weekend. I like to start off with life or wheat thins cereal then add some cashews almonds raisins and then a small bag of mixed dried fruit. Its packed with calories, carbs and protein to keep you going.

As for the dry foods stick with rice and pasta`s. Rice like Uncle ben`s or Rice a Roni are flavored and you just need boiling water. They are light and taste good. You can also just boil water for pasta`s and add some oil and garlic and any seasoning you want. Ramen Noodles are also compact and light weight.

You mentioned peanut butter..you should try it the wraps, they`re flat and light. Unlike regular bread it wont get crushed. You can put PB on the wrap then put some powdered hot cocoa and sprinkle some rice krispy cereal on it. It taste exactly like a reese`s peanutbutter cup.

Tips and advise for traveling?

Hello! I am planning a trip with a few friends (4 or more) to Viet Nam, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand and Laos. I wanted to get some good comebacks, pros/cons, tips, websites to visit and traveling advise. This would be a group of twenty to twenty four year old kids traveling probably for the first time in a completely different country. If you have any personal experience in those countries, please share! Anything knowledgeable is better then not knowing anything at all. We are planning to go in the Winter cause I heard it's better traveling then. Hope to read up on some good comments!!

Answer
Buying clothes in SE Asia can be a pain, unless you are a small person (5 ft. tall or shorter).

When you are not in the mountains, it will be very hot and humid. Cotton T-shirts and denim become wet and heavy with sweat (ugh). Technical clothing (try a trekking shop) will dry fast and not feel so heavy. A long-sleeved white shirt can be a life-saver in the sun. And get a good hat with a wide brim -- saves your ears from sun and your face from rain (so you can see).

Take as little clothing as possible -- laundry can be done for you very cheaply if you stay 2 nights in one place. Technical clothing will dry overnight if you wash it in the sink. Travel light, leave space for souvenirs!

A rain poncho is good -- but can be really hot in the humid weather. Again I like the technical clothing, a super-lightweight jacket with a hood, and zippers in the armpits to let in some air!

A good headlamp is an awesome, awesome thing to have at night. Trust me. Bring 2 sets of spare batteries for it. Don't waffle and buy a Maglite instead -- I really do mean a headlamp, with an elastic strap.

Backpack or duffel depends on the kind of trip. I have a Deuter 55+10 that I've lived out of for 2 months at a time, dragged through several SE Asian countries, and all the zippers still work. Some rough spots but no holes. Well, a couple of little holes. Go to a trekking shop, find one that suits you. But if you're going to be shuttled around with your group, you probably do not need a backpack and can make out fine with a duffel-style bag with a good shoulder strap. Make sure you can lock it.

Another thing to consider is the types of walking. If nothing serious (jungles), then Tevas or Keens will be fine. But if there's any real jungle trekking, make sure you break in your hikers well before you leave home. And buy good socks to wear with the hikers. Because when your feet are soaking wet, you do not want thin, cheap socks on your feet. Ouch!

When you are in Bangkok, go to a traditional market and buy a bunch of 100% cotton handkerchiefs (they will be cheap and colorful). These have a thousand uses, especially for swabbing all the sweat off your face.

I love SE Asia, and I hope you will too! You will love it more if you take a few steps to make sure you will be comfortable, not lugging a heavy bag, not having blisters on your feet.

How to deal with a "weeaboo"?

NyuXan

I recently encountered a student on a school bus (I'm in 8th grade, he's in 7th grade) and found out that he also enjoyed anime. However finding the time to sit next to him on the bus, I noticed that he is an a extreme weeaboo (His clean/cut appearance made me denied the weeaboo phase at first) . Apparently the only anime is he willing to talk about is Naruto. Which he seems to talk about 24/7. He speaks butchered Japanese, the horror... He showed me many sites that I already knew about for watching anime especially for Naruto, crunchyroll being on that list. Once he opened his backpack and I happened to noticed many Naruto hentai doujinshi (Original content work) and many Naruto plushies. He bothers me 24/7 at school and on the internet. I sometimes find him stalking me while waiting for school to begin (School starts at 8:10, students wait in front of school gates). Can someone PLEASE tell me how to deal with a weeaboo? It's starting to creep me out.

Answer
Well, the poor kid probably has no friends because of his Naruto obsession (or has his Naruto obsession because he has no friends). Or some combo of both.
In you, he thinks he has finally met someone who at least is able to understand his fixation (if not share it). That's still more than he likely gets from any of the other kids. So, you represent someone he can actually talk to about his favorite subject.

Do you feel he is an actual physical threat to you? You use words like stalking and creep. They have the connotation of someone who gives off vibes of being dangerous. If you really believe that, talk to the counselor about him, immediately.

However, if you are merely annoyed by his clinginess and embarrassed by his hovering around you, especially in front of your friends, that's another story. In this case, I see 3 options.

You can be cruel to him. Tell him that he is annoying , and that you and he are not friends in no uncertain terms. But I'd reserve this option as a last resort, because no one appreciates having their feelings hurt (and certainly not by someone they are infatuated with for whatever reason; that's a double whammy to their self-esteem). Yeah, he'll back off. But now, he's gonna hate you.

You can talk to him like he's a person with feelings. Explain to him that it's not him, personally, that you object to, but certain things that he does that he ought to tone down a bit. If he is as keen on having you for an anime-buddy as you say, he'll probably be eager to do what you tell him, particularly if you do it kindly and gently. He may even appreciate the advice you give him. The only way this option wouldn't work is if it turns out that he's kinda thick-headed. A little more persistence might do the trick. If not, there is one more thing you can try...

Find someone else who is a Naruto fan. Introduce them. If they hit it off, he will be pestering someone else and lose interest in you. Mission accomplished! I realize that this is a diversionary tactic, and all you've done is make him someone else's problem, but, hey, if it works, it works, right?

WHAT IS THE BEST THING TO BRING ON A PLANE FOR A 2 YEAR OLD ?

children backpack recommendations
on Gift Idea: Personalized Gifts - Kids Backpacks
children backpack recommendations image

SKY

Answer
It's actually quite dangerous to sedate your child in ANY way without a very good medical reason and a doctor's recommendation. Only an idiot would recommend doing such a thing.

I recently flew with my two-year-old. For starters, get her a carry-on of her own. My daughter has a Dora rolling backpack that she used, and she felt very proud to be rolling it through the airport by herself. In it I packed snacks, a baby doll, paper/coloring book/crayons, a few small toys that didn't make noise and a couple of books. During take-off and landing, when the air pressure can be uncomfortable for your ears, I gave her suckers. Another idea would be a portable DVD player (with headphones so as not to disrupt the other passengers--you can buy special headphones at Wal-Mart that are designed especially for toddlers who are hard on things).

EDIT: Perhaps I wasn't being specific enough when I said you shouldn't sedate your child in ANY way (sounds pretty clear to me though). Children should NEVER be given ANY medication unless it's absolutely medically necessary. Does Benadryl have on the label as one of it's uses that you can give it to your child to make them easier to fly with? NO. Benadryl can actually cause children to become overly HYPER instead of drowsy, so you'd likely be doing yourself a disservice there. It's also DANGEROUS to medicate children, especially this young, when they don't really need it. Any GOOD pediatrician would NEVER recommend misuse of medication, especially not for the comfort of total strangers on an aircraft. It's not that difficult to entertain a small child on a flight if you go about it the right way, I've done it without issue numerous times. Anyone who wants to put their child to sleep so that they don't have to deal with them doesn't have any business being a parent; anyone who wants to put their child to sleep because they're worried about what the other passengers will think needs to get over it.

Any recommendation for Cambodia trip?

purplefeiy

I'm goin to backpack to Cambodia this July, anyone knows where I can get a very good guide or forum online? Or mayb just give me a rough suggestion on my plan. I'm going to be there for a week and will be arriving in Siam Reap and going back from Phnom Penh. I plan to have 3 days on Angkor Wat tour but dunno wat to do for the rest of the week. Will I be able to fit Ratanakiri or Sikhanoukville in my plan? Thanks in advance.

Answer
i really help you when you are in Phnom Penh if you need me to help

something, like to find a cheap hotel in Phnom Penh, food, best place

to visit....
and if you have alot of money you will be a happy night guy if you

know the place like me,

if you want to know more about Siem Reap i tell you
if you are in PP and need to travel to Siem Reap by bus, the ticket is

7$ per person, there you can find a normal guest house may be 10$ per

night or so and suppose you gonna stay in SR for 3 days. Tickets for

Angkor cos $20 for a 1day pass and 40$ for a 2/3day pass. in addition

to entry you need to arrange transport. Bycicle cos t $2-3/day and can

be hired from many guesthouse. Motos, Tuks-Tuks, Taxis are other ways

but i think it is expensive.

anyway if you meet me i will give some Angkor Guidebook, that it is

good for you when you are in Siem Reap.
if you want more detail about half-day Tour, Oneday Tour, Two or Three

day tour in Siem Reap tell me, but better i will give you somebook when

you reach PP.

The best place to visit is Angkor wat temple in Siem Reap, and the beach in Shiahanouk Ville, very natural beach, alot of places to visit but it depend on the time you have, if you want to see the VERY natural mountain or forest it takes you so much time but i can recommend you somewhere like Pailin in Battambang Province(waterfall, Blue Mountain ....), Rattanakiri and Modulkir (waterfall, natural mountain, wildlife....) very very green country.

acutally there is no difficult rule for you to be aware of. The big thing is you have to aware of is accused of being sex with children.

The Hotel rate is cheap, you can find it every where when you reach Phnom Penh, guest house is more cheaper.

You have to take off your hate when you go Pagoda, or Royal Palace, you have to say Jom Reap Sour when you first meet someone.
and the say Lea Hay instead of saying Goodbye
everything here is not expensive at all.
pple here are very nice and their english not bad.

anything else please mail me ra_jerm@yahoo.com
welcome to my country
hope this would be helpful

I'm going to a different school

Answer
Well do you like it? You shouldn't care all about What other people think especially at your age. You can't let people tell you who to be what to do (except for teachers, parents, other adults lol) but kids your age. And now you might think wait you just said you shouldn't care about other people think but if you want my honest opinion I'm not a fan. I think it would be better to get a bag from target with a simple print. And it's only because I kinda grew out of justice 2 years ago... But it's totally up to you that was just my honest opinion. I would not lie and say OMGEE IT'S THE CAUTEST BAG I'VE EVER SEEN. because in seventh grade I had a jansport backpack that was black and pink plaid. No one had justice bags... Good luck with seventh grade it's really important for high school especially if you want to go to private hs cuz they look at your seventh grade year a lot. Justbe the best you can be.

Teen strip-searched in school wins partial victory. WHOSE SIDE DO YOU TAKE, THE SCHOOLS OR THE STUDENTS?

Q. WHOSE SIDE DO YOOU TAKE, THE SCHOOLS OR THE STUDENTS?

Savana Redding was 13 when administrators suspected she was carrying drugs

No medication was found, and she later sued

Justices: Search was unreasonable, but individual school officials can't be sued

Redding, now 19, has said she has never gotten over her experience

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A former middle-school student who was strip-searched by school officials looking for ibuprofen pain medication won a partial victory of her Supreme Court appeal Thursday in a case testing the discretion of officials to ensure classroom safety.

Savana Redding leaves the U.S Supreme Court in April. She was 13 when she was strip-searched.

Savana Redding was 13 when administrators suspected that she was carrying banned drugs.

No medication was found, and she later sued.

The justices concluded that the search was unreasonable but that individual school administrators could not be sued.

The larger issue of whether a campus setting traditionally gives schools greater authority over students suspected of illegal activity than police are allowed was not addressed fully by the divided court.

"Savana's subjective expectation of privacy against such a search is inherent in her account of it as embarrassing, frightening and humiliating," wrote Justice David Souter for the majority, likely his last opinion before he steps down from the bench next week.

But reflecting the divisiveness over the issue, Souter said, "We think these differences of opinion from our own are substantial enough to require immunity for the school officials in this case."

Whether the school district would be liable was not an issue before the high court.

"I'm pretty excited that they agreed with me, they see that it was wrong for the school to do that," Redding said from her Hobbs, New Mexico, home after the ruling was announced.

"I'm pretty certain that it's so far less likely to happen again" to other students.

Redding was an eighth-grade honor student in 2003, with no history of disciplinary problems at Safford Middle School, about 127 miles from Tucson, Arizona.

During an investigation into pills found at the school, a student told the vice principal that Redding had given her prescription-strength 400-milligram ibuprofen pills.

The school had a near-zero-tolerance policy for all prescription and over-the-counter medication, including the ibuprofen, without prior written permission.

Redding was pulled from class by Vice Principal Kerry Wilson, escorted to an office and confronted with the evidence. The girl denied the accusations.

A search of Redding's backpack found nothing. A strip search was conducted by Wilson's assistant and a school nurse, both females.

Redding was ordered to strip to her underwear and to pull on the elastic of the underwear, so any hidden pills might fall out, according to court records. No drugs were found.

"The strip search was the most humiliating experience I have ever had," Redding said in an affidavit. "I held my head down so that they could not see that I was about to cry."

Souter said Wilson initially had "sufficient suspicion" to justify searching the girl's backpack and outer clothing. But when no contraband was found, the officials went too far by continuing the search of her underwear.

With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, Redding and her family sued, and a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled against the school, calling the search "traumatizing" and illegal. That court said the school went too far in its effort to create a drug- and crime-free classroom.

The Supreme Court found little agreement on key issues. Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg agreed that the search was illegal but would have also made individual officials liable for damages by Redding.

"Wilson's treatment of Redding was abusive, and it was not reasonable for him to believe that the law permitted it," said Ginsburg, who was especially forceful during oral arguments in April, criticizing the school's actions.

But Justice Clarence Thomas took the opposite view: that administrators deserved immunity and that the search was permissible.

"Preservation of order, discipline and safety in public schools is simply not the domain of the Constitution," he said. "And, common sense is not a judicial monopoly or a constitutional imperative."

In 1985, the high court allowed the search of a student's purse after she was suspected of hiding cigarettes. Such a search was permitted if there were "reasonable" grounds for believing that it would turn up evidence and when the search was not "excessively intrusive."

Opinions in 1995 and 2001 allowed schools to conduct random drug testing of high school athletes and those participating in other extracurricular activities.

The court was being asked to clarify the extent of student rights involving searches and the discretion of officials regar

Answer
They had a reason to suspect she was carrying a banned substance. I doubt we'll ever know the full story of why she was suspected, but only 1 other student pointing her out is most likely not the only thing the based their search off of.

Regardless of how harmless some people think Ibuproffen is, it was a prescription strength banned substance that some people are allergic to. It could cause the death or hospitalisation of another student.

QandAs

This Spring Break im thinking of doing a little road trip up north to san fransico or maybe even down to san diego, and along the way i want to camp +fish. The only issue is I dont know of any areas with camping near a river or lake, that is free or in the very least cheap.

Would any of you know of some areas that are good to check out, and are not so RV friendly? like "real" camping.
Im aware of needing a fishing license

Answer
Not much left free in the state. The last time I car camped for free it was on a beach 30 miles south of Ensenada.

I believe you can still get a free wilderness permit and backpack in to some pretty good areas in the Sierras, but the places I used to go tended to start inside national parks (and there's a fee to get into the park in the first place). But of course, the high country is still probably snowed in until May or so.

National forest campgrounds run (I think) $20 per night, though it may vary. And in most of them you get the RVs. (I understand your problems with them -- to me, sleeping indoors is not camping, and the lights and generators ruin things for the rest of us.)

So unfortunately I think you're going to have to pay. Pick a lake with good fishing so you get your money's worth.

San Diego Campground Recommendations Please?

OKONKWO

Me and my buddies want to go camping in a few weeks and we are looking for a place where we can go and put up a tent in the woods and sleep there. Not a "campground" with camp sites, but just a national forest were we can deal with everything ourselves. If you know anything in or around San Diego like this please let me know. Or if you could direct me to any website related to southern California camping, it would be most appreciated.

Answer
Some worthy spots in SoCal are actually being shut down due to the California State Budget Crisis. I would recommend Palomar Mountain State Park, but it's one of many being affected by the cuts. You may be able to sneak in and backpack your way to a spot... Or camp at the observatory.

Otherwise, Cuyamaca is a great place to go. Also, any part of the Cleveland National Forest. If those don't work out and you're up for a drive, Id highly recommend Joshua Tree National Park just south of 29 Palms. It's about a 2 hour drive, but GREAT for hiking, camping, rock climbing, exploring, trippin', anything! ;)

Going to rome Italy for 9 days how much should I save for spending money?

I will be in Rome Italy for 9 days in July 2013. I was wondering how much spending money I should save up. It is my boyfriend and me, so enough spending money for two people.
Hotel is already booked and flight is done. Just need the spending money for food, sight seeing, souvenirs.

Answer
What will you need money for? Tourists that are backpacking and staying in cheap hostels can get by for around $100 per day, but that includes accommodations, meals, transportation, sightseeing and souvenirs. Hotels will cost more. I generally spend 100-150 euro a night just for hotels when I go out exploring. Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip:

http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.htm⦠- train schedules and prices if you want to take a day trip or two out of Rome during your stay. The trains are a great way to get around here. In places like Spain or here in Italy, railpasses are rarely worth the money.

http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. I was in Venice recently and paid 32 euro for lunch at Da Raffaele sitting at a canal side table with the gondolas passing by. Here in Italy, You can get a whole pizza for 8 to 13 euro or a pasta dish in the same range. Panini or pizza by the slice is less. For reference, a McDonalds McMenu classico (medium) is going for around 7.50 euro. While you can eat cheaply most of the time, I would recommend getting a good local meal from time to time; that's part of the overall experience that it would be a shame to miss. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Shopping depends entirely on you.

How should I hike the Appalatchain trail?

Me and my dad want to go on a three day hike on the Appalachian Trail. We need to know a list to bring, where we go to start the trail and if we can set up camp any where on the trail or if there are camp sites. Also if we can make a fire to cook our food. One last detail we live in Georgia.

Answer
Use a trail finder to pick the best part of the APT. As long as your on public lands you can camp anywhere you want as long as it is permitted. http://www.localhikes.com/

Stay away from the shelters and people you meet on the trail there is a norovirus going around and it's spreading like a wildfire amongst the APT hikers. Use sterile wipes on the pit toilets and don't touch anything in them.
http://internetbrothers.org/2013/04/08/norovirus-on-at-in-north-carolina/

Campfires may be restricted due to fire danger you will have to get a fire permit from the forest rangers office in the district you pick to hike in. Because of that in order to cook food you will need a backpackers stove

How can I find a good sleeping bag?

I usually go to the Grand Canyon in April. I borrow a sleeping bag every year, but I'm thinking about buying one now. Any suggestions?

Answer
There is a big difference between backpacking sleeping bags and general purpose 'car camping' bags, so you will want to go with a store and brand that specializes in backpacking.

Aside from comfort and warmth, as a backpacker you will want to consider weight, how small it compresses and how water resistant it is. The big divide right now is between synthetic and down bags. Synthetic bags are generally cheaper and will keep you warm even when wet. Down bags are warmer and compress better, but usually cost more and need to be kept dry (today most come with water-resistant outer shells which work to varying degrees).

Whatever bag you get, my experience is that the bag rating (the temperature to which it is effective) is generally a bit on the optomistic side and I would give yourself an extra 5-10 degrees to be safe (ie: if the coldest temp you expect while camping is 35 degrees, I would get a bag rated to 25 degrees).

I am currently using a Marmot Helium which I highly recommend - it is rated to 15 degrees, compresses smaller than a loaf of bread and weighs less than 2 pounds. It is one of the best backpacking bags out there, but also one of the most expensive at $300+.

For many years, I used a Sierra 'Wild Bill' synthetic bag ('Rosa' is the female model) which was quite comfortable and useable and cost about $100. Other good and well respected brands to consider are REI, Big Agnes and Mountain Hardware.

See the websites below and even go to a store and try a few to see how they fill. I would recommend going to a store that is dedicated to backpacking and hiking as opposed to general recreation or hunting and fishing (which will probably have more heavy bags). REI is a great place to go and their people can give you good advice as well (many are avid backpackers). REI stores are located in most large western cities (there are two in the Phoenix area).

A few other notes... you will probably want to get some sort of air mattress. Therma-rest makes some pretty comfy pads specifically for backpacking that pack down pretty light and tight. You can also buy a little cloth sling for them which turn them into a comfortable seat (with back support) for sitting around camp. Note too that Backpacker magazine typically comes out with their big yearly gear guide in early spring and will have some good recommendations too.

When and how did you get started in mountaineering?

11UN

Be it, mountaineering as an interest or as a career.

Answer
I had always been fascinated my mountains and climbing them. I grew up in the 1950's when all of the world's highest peaks were being first climbed and used to read about the expeditions in the National Geographic. My dad noticed my interest and gave me a lot of books on those adventures, like "Annapurna", "Mountain of Storms", "High in the Thin Cold Air" and "The Ascent of Everest." We always camped and hiked while I was a child and I continued doing that through high school and into college but always thought I would like to climb as well.

When I was 22, a local outdoor club offered a 4 month rock climbing school on Saturdays for $25 so I signed up. After that I took their winter mountaineering and ice climbing school and started regularly backpacking and climbing just in my local area. Then I went on weeklong vacation trips out of state to more mountainous regions like the Tetons and Rockies (US and Canada). I liked mountaineering so much that I quit my lab tech job when I was 26 and worked for 4 years for an outfitter, selling the gear and acting as a guide and instructor on trips. It was fun for a while but you don't make a lot of money and eventually I got tired of working weekends and not having the freedom to do my own trips so I got out of the business and into a career that allowed me weekends off, good vacations and enough income that I could travel to the mountains I enjoyed. I just turned 60 this year and still enjoy being in the high peaks -- it has kept me healthy and strong.

On the down side, I have lost several friends, all outstanding climbers, to death in mountaineering accidents. But I know that they died doing something they absolutely loved so my sorrow at their passing is somewhat eased by that.

Advice for taking our 19 month old son on a long-haul flight (30+ hours)?

Steven Jen

Hi, later this year my partner and I are taking our son who will be 19 months old on his first ever flight but I for one am dreading it as it is a long-haul flight going from New Zealand to the UK (via Australia/Singapore and possibly Dubai - depending on which airline we finally decide to book with) for a 3 week stay.

As most boys probably are, our son is very energetic, won't stay still very long at all and gets very bored easily so needs lots of entertaining.

The trip will be well worth it when we do get to the UK as our son has never met any of my side of the family who are all over there. So knowing that alone will help us cope somewhat with any stresses of flying with a young child.

Any advice/tip's/experiences shared etc to help ease the journey will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly transatlantics alone a lot with my three children.

This is a long flight and you're going to need to be organized. I wont lie to you and I have to admit that this was probably the worst age for air travel. They love to move but don't have the reasoning to talk about the fact that sometimes they have to be seated, etc.

I recommend that instead of a diaper bag, purse, etc. you opt for a large backpack. Mine goes up to my knee when placed on the ground. Bring at least two changes of clothes and way more diapers than he usually goes through in the same time frame. He will need more than usual. Take out packs of 10, straight from the pack so that they're really flat and put in a plastic bag, Bind with rubber bands and this will make space. Clothes are rolled, placed in plastic and also bound with rubber bands. Split the supplies between both of you in case you're separated or just so that one can take him somewhere without having to fuss with the gear.

My kids at that age were too active for portable DVD players, although they were useful later. You actually have a number of options as far as gadgets that play movies so find out what works for you and if you think it'll keep him occupied. One tip I got was to burn the movies on to your hard drive if you're bringing a computer to save battery time while watching. Make sure he wears the headphones. Practice at home if necessary.

I found simple toys worked best; toy trucks, toy cars, plastic animals, coloring things (magadoodles as well as old fashioned pens and paper), chunky books with openable flaps, pinwheels, plastic rings that click together, pipe cleaners, play dough, etc. Nothing that makes noise. Even a quiet noise played 10,000 will drive your fellow passengers batty. Make sure some of the toys are new (or at least never seen before) so you can "present" them at critical times, like to offset a tantrum and after the plane pulls away from the gate and everyone is supposed to be seated.

Try to get him off of bottles and on to a sippy cup if possible. But if he's like my son, good luck! Chances are he wont so opt for the bottles with disposable plastic liners. Get the flat liners (not "pop-ins"), premeasure the powder in each, roll it up and put in a ziplock.

I really recommend that he have his own seat. This is a LONG time to be on your laps and he's going to be big and heavy. If you opt to save money, try to get an empty seat on the plane beside you. They often do this for families. Be really nice at check-in.

I always fly with a car seat. This is a whole, big subject. Babies are quieter and more comfortable in their own familiar car seat, as well as much, much safer. It's not that big a deal to take it along. I simply strapped mine to a metal luggage cart and pulled it behind me with the carry-on bags. You do want to check your car seat's compatibility, before you book. Make sure you can use it on board. Different airlines have different rules.

Be sure not to check it as luggage. They often get lost and/or broken en route so either use it on board or gate-check it. You may want to arrange a car seat at your destination but please never use one from a rental car company. Have relatives ask around and make sure it's not too old.

I really recommend a good baby carrier. It is the secret to successfully flying with children. He's far too big for one of those dire "front packs" (like the Bjorn) but something comfortable and perhaps with a back carry is good. If you don't already use a sling or wrap, you may want to get a Mei Tai, Ergo, Beco or similar carrier. They're soft, easy to take along and are magic for calming overtired babies on flights (experience speaking!) Also, in big scary airports, toddlers don't always sit nicely in their strollers and want to be held. As a Flight Attendant, I saw far too many parents trying to get through airports with clingy and sleeping babies over their shoulders. Don't be one of them!

Please don't fret over ears. It's actually a myth that babies have to suck on something for take-off and landing. Sure, if you want to offer a cup to drink, not on landing but at the top of descent (landing is too late) when everyone's ears have to reverse pressure, do so. This is about an hour before. What I do recommend is that you schedule a doctor's visit and make sure he doesn't have any ear blockages or infections. These are dangerous and painful to fly with so just have someone look in his ears. We "caught" one in my toddler son once. But on the flight itself, there is no reason to unnecessarily wake up your child or force him to drink if he doesn't want to.

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

How do I start being outdoorsy?

I grew up in a family that did NOT like doing anything outdoorsy (camping, hiking, backpacking, etc) but every time I would get the chance to go with my friends, I LOVED it. Now that I'm older and on my own I want to start being more outdoorsy but have no clue where to start...a lot of the gear is expensive and i don't know what is necessary or not. I don't have any idea where to even begin getting outdoors more...any tips?

Answer
Start by finding groups that do the activities you want to do. Hiking groups for hiking, camping for camping and so on. Meetup.com is a good source, but so is visiting local outdoor stores. Sometimes they will have groups meet there for demo's and such, and is a great way to meet people.

Where can I find a Backpackers backpack in Kansas City, Missouri?

StorminGor

I am traveling to study abroad in Germany in a couple months and I am looking for a pack to go with me.

I've been to Cabella's and Bass Pro but i'm not looking for a camping backpack and when I went to Cabella's the guy had no idea what he was talking about (He admitted it himself).

Any help? We don't have an REI but surely there is a place that could help me out?

Answer
As someone who's done a lot of backpacking and camping in my time - I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean either. As I know it, there are 3 basic kinds of backpacks - frameless, internal frame, and external frame. You may be thinking of external frame as the "camper's backpack" I'm guessing, in which case you are looking for an internal frame perhaps? Frameless is like your basic rucksack, or the type of backpack a kid takes to school, and as there is no shortage of those, I'm guessing it isn't what you want.

You might try Cabella's and Bass Pro again, instead asking for a light (or even ultralight) internal frame pack. Try the Bass Pro in Independence, it should carry more than the Olathe store. Also, any sporting goods store, such as Dick's Sporting Goods at Town Center in Overland Park (or is it Leawood?) or Sports Authority (Lenexa, Tiffany Springs). You can also try an army surplus shop like Mickey's Surplus if that's more your style.

I am traveling for about 1.5 months from Mexico, then to Australia and finally in Fiji. I was wondering if someone experienced with prolonged travel could tell me if I should use a cargo style large bag or if a Kelty/ North Face, large style backpack would do the trick. I won't be doing anything majorly strenuous but there will be camping involved and as I said, I will be away for about 1.5 months. Thanks.

Answer
Having travelled twice around Europe with the same backpack, this is definitely the way to go (hands free, weight distributed on shoulders, waist). As you are only going for 1.5 months, you will have more than enough room for all your stuff. Pack it then take half your clothes out - you will not need them!

What Do You Think Are The Best Camping Tents?

Alexis

I would like to know everyone opinion on what is the best type of tent. I personally think that North Face--Summit Series tent seem to be the best tents. Apparently they have -60 F crack proof windows and are meant for harsh, cold, weather.

Does anyone out there think there is anything better than the summit series?

Thanks a bunch!!

Answer
The best camping tents are ones that are easy to set up. Are roomy enough for you, your friends and the gear. Keep you warm and dry in all kinds of weather, and don't cost an arm and a leg. Functionality for purpose is also very important. For example I endorse Coleman tents for family camping and most backpacking use where as for trekking long treks and summiting I would want a much lighter tent along the lines and style of your choice. Only one brand guarantees that you will have a dry tent inside and that is Coleman if your into summiting only then the north face will suit you fine but if you want a roomy tent then go with Coleman.

I'm in my early to mid-twenties now, but when I was a child, a doctor told me I had a mild form of scoliosis. Never did anything about it and was just told to avoid overdoing the carrying of heavy bags, etc. Looking at it from a mirror, I feel as though the curvature has gotten somewhat worse. It doesn't bother me physically in any way, but should I be concerned? I'm a student, and carrying heavy bags is inevitable now and then, although I'll try to be better about it. Any tips?

Answer
a check up is in order In general lifting weights carefully strengthens your spine but you may need special instructions if you have scoliosis-perhaps a new eval would tell you how it is today compared to the childhood version. Ask about your exercise routine and if you have any limitations If any painful movements report them vefore you go forward.Look in to the wheeled laptop/backpack carriers Most people use them these days. Minimize what you carry to school day to day. See about yoga and or pilates to strengthen the abdominal core that works to support the back as well Don t be overweight-dont starve yourself but work towards a healthy weight at all times.Wear sturdy supportive shoes like Birkenstocks or Danskos etc(Im not advertising any particular brand) Avoid flimsy shoes like flipflops and high heels

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

How much do you pay for 2 weeks of summer camp for your kids?

mark

My kids talked me into sending them to sleep away camp this year for 2 weeks. It's costing me $3400 for both of them ($1700 each). The camp is in NY. How much do you pay

Answer
You'd spend more money than that taking them to Disneyland for a four day family trip. Summer camps are definitely in the business of making money, but many of them offer opportunities for your children to learn a variety of useful skills, like swimming, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, and just plain simple survival skills.

I'm 60 years old, and still remember fondly the two weeks I spent at a summer camp when I was 13. I had to pay for my own, and it was $20 per day in 1962, so $121 a day is not all that out of line, considering the supervision and preparation necessary to keep a large group of children safe, occupied , and happy over that long a period.

A good babysitter would charge at least $10 per hour for two children. 24 hours a day would be $240, and you would still pay for food and entertainment on top of that. Enjoy the two weeks kid free. You'll get a vacation too.

Can you power a laptop with a portable solar energy device?

xxxxxxxxxx

So let's say some people are rock climbing, could they power their laptop computers and/or charge up their laptop batteries only with a portable solar power device they are carrying with them?

And if so where could someone buy such a device?

Answer
There are several different versions - treehugger has a review of some.
They may not power up a dead battery while you are trying to use the device.
But they should be able to augment the battery for longer use or better yet charge your battery while you are doing other activities. Like reading a book.
Caution: Do not leave your electronics unattended, even on a backpacking trip.
