How do I start being outdoorsy?

I grew up in a family that did NOT like doing anything outdoorsy (camping, hiking, backpacking, etc) but every time I would get the chance to go with my friends, I LOVED it. Now that I'm older and on my own I want to start being more outdoorsy but have no clue where to start...a lot of the gear is expensive and i don't know what is necessary or not. I don't have any idea where to even begin getting outdoors more...any tips?

Answer
Start by finding groups that do the activities you want to do. Hiking groups for hiking, camping for camping and so on. Meetup.com is a good source, but so is visiting local outdoor stores. Sometimes they will have groups meet there for demo's and such, and is a great way to meet people.

Where can I find a Backpackers backpack in Kansas City, Missouri?

I am traveling to study abroad in Germany in a couple months and I am looking for a pack to go with me.

I've been to Cabella's and Bass Pro but i'm not looking for a camping backpack and when I went to Cabella's the guy had no idea what he was talking about (He admitted it himself).

Any help? We don't have an REI but surely there is a place that could help me out?

Answer
As someone who's done a lot of backpacking and camping in my time - I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean either. As I know it, there are 3 basic kinds of backpacks - frameless, internal frame, and external frame. You may be thinking of external frame as the "camper's backpack" I'm guessing, in which case you are looking for an internal frame perhaps? Frameless is like your basic rucksack, or the type of backpack a kid takes to school, and as there is no shortage of those, I'm guessing it isn't what you want.

You might try Cabella's and Bass Pro again, instead asking for a light (or even ultralight) internal frame pack. Try the Bass Pro in Independence, it should carry more than the Olathe store. Also, any sporting goods store, such as Dick's Sporting Goods at Town Center in Overland Park (or is it Leawood?) or Sports Authority (Lenexa, Tiffany Springs). You can also try an army surplus shop like Mickey's Surplus if that's more your style.
