Where did this originate? Where parents carry the kids backpack?

TS

I was with my sister picking her kids up from school (elementary) and all the OTHER parents were carrying their kids backpack. I mean A LOT of them. When did kids stop carrying their own backpacks? Is this something new? Do you think its right?

Answer
Because parents want to further pussify their kids.
The schools (in their infinite wisdom) are admittedly loading down even the tiniest of kids with heavy books, but that's still no reason for parents to carry their backpacks 50 feet to their MomMobile. Kids don't even walk any more! They get driven even if home's less than a few blocks, and now they can't even carry their own books to the minivan.
Pathetic. Not the kids, mind, they have no choice. What's pathetic is the parents who create this kind of dependence.

Parents these days won't let kids do anything for themselves because the more a kid does for themselves, the more independent they become, and the more independent they are, the less *control* a parent has on them, and total control over everything (until at least age 18, but usually it's closer to 30 now) is the current aim. It's just a sign of the times that parents can't even allow their kids the independence to carry their own bag.

I don't see it as spoiling at all. I don't think most of the kids want this kind of babying; it's the parents forcing it on them. I know that my kids at least would object if I took something as trivial as being responsible for their own things out of their hands.

Alright, so I'm a freshman in highschool and I need a new backpack. Personally, I think this one is great and that it would be cute in a joke-y way if I used it:
http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/Clearance/Dickies-Dinosaur-Backpack-238401.jsp
my mother, however, thinks it's stupid. Who do you agree with?

Answer
Okay...I'm sure you were hoping for answers from other kids and not moms...but I have one son in middle school and one daughter who is a senior - so I've seen the gamut when it comes to friends / trends / etc. Now, I mean this is the nicest way...but I think the real the only question you should be asking is do YOU like it? Trendsetters don't wait to see what other people are going to do or say...they don't care. If you wear this to school, I guarantee that SOMEONE will find something snotty to say...and someone else will think it's cute, especially if you wear your clothes and accessories with confidence. When someone says they don't like something of yours, shrug and say, "Well I like it" and walk off. After awhile, other freshmen (a.k.a frosh) especially will really start to respect that independence, even if they don't admit it openly. People gravitate towards strong personalities. Does your mom genuinely not like it or is she just worried you'll get teased? I personally love anything different...not EVERYTHING different all at once (that just gets weird) but just some unique stuff thrown in. I think the backpack is cute and that the black is going to wear well, too (but that's probably another mom thing) lol. Either way, good luck in high school! I hope it's as fun as it can be (considering it's the dreaded "school") :oP

I would like to ask a question by following?

Lacramioar

Hello,
We are a family in need, my husband and me , have no income and live in child allowances, have three children, who must start school in September, and we have no money we need to buy clothes and school supplies for children, the question is next , anyone know a site where anyone can write for help , we can buy school supplies for children, or a site where , can help with school supplies for children?
Thank you in advance

Answer
I don't know of any websites but I would try calling a nearby church and asking for assistance. They usually can help or find out who can help.

Also I would look up a weekly circular from some of the stores around your area as there tend to be some pretty good deals this time of year. Where I live right now Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples all have 1 penny spiral notebooks. Office max has 10 pencils for 5 cents and crayola crayons and school glue for 15 cents. Office Depot has fifty cent highlighters, binders and glue. Staples has 25 cent composition notebooks and rulers, and 50 cent retractable pens, mechanical pencils, and plastic school boxes. Many office supply stores are offering rebates on copy paper as well making a whole ream cost as little as fifty cents! Walgreens has 50 cent dividers and colored pencils, as well as 29 cent pens and two pocket folders are 6 for a dollar. Dollar stores are also a good option. The dollar trees in my area are selling Scientific calculators for a buck, and scissors in two packs.

The real expenses are probably school clothes/uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and lunchboxes (if they don't get free lunch from the school). You can save by buying gently used clothing and backpacks from thrift stores (And its not like they outgrew every last piece of clothing either), and checking out the clearance aisles for new shoes. Or if their old shoes still fit and aren't totally trashed sometimes a good spin through the washer is all it takes, plus maybe a set of shoelaces from the dollar store. If you do purchase new shoes I'd recommend getting darker colored shoes a half size big to allow room for growth. Dark shoes don't get dirty quite as fast and look better longer. Pay-less has some good sales and right now and Walmart has several kids shoes for $10-20 a pair. If buying uniforms is too expensive contact the school, often times they have extra clothes or know of someone who can help get clothes.

Best of luck :)

My daughter is going into 7th grade. We will be going out looking for backpacks soon. ANy suggestions? DO junior highers use lunchboxes? Or is it cooler to just buy your lunch or what?

Answer
definitely not the roller suitcase type backpacks. even though they are better for the back its just not cool. majority of junior high kids buy their lunch at school in the cafeteria. a simple packback like jansport or something with a cute color that your kid likes would be good.

How do you get stains off a Jansport backpack?

QA

Some stains are of unknown sources, but some are from pens, possibly food, dirt... a regular Jjansport school backpack

Answer
Most stains come out of my 5 kids backbacks just by being thrown in the washing machine. Spray it with a commercial stain remover first. Something like shout or spray and wash.

Do you just purchase supplies like folders/notebooks/pencils etc. or do you also buy new clothes and shoes? New backpacks or lunch boxes?

Growing up my mom used back to school as the chance to buy a years worth of everything. I however don't think my soon to be first grader needs allll that much.

Answer
we buy the folders, pencils, etc. even if we technically could scrounge them from previous years ... there's just something inspiring about a new folder or pencil that an old one just can't match. the old ones obviously don't get thrown out but get used for home projects, instead.

clothes, i buy only when needed, but since all the kids are still growing, the kids typically need new fall clothes anyway, and we typically get them right before school starts even though they'll still be wearing their summer clothes for a while longer. shoes, i only buy when they're actually outgrown or destroyed. i would replace lunch boxes at the beginning of the school year if the kids actually ask me to (on the grounds that the design on the kindergarten lunch box might be mortifying in fifth grade), but usually they don't. otherwise i only replace them when they fall apart. i bought high-quality LL Bean backpacks for my kids when they started kindergarten and my incoming ninth grader is still happily using hers.

Can I make a trip in a RV with young children?

Luna

My husband and I are planning a trip to Estes park Colorado. He want us to rent a big RV to camp at Rocky Mountains and then travel to other areas. I am not so sure that this is what I would like us to do. I prefer a cabin, since we have a 1 and a 3 year old children. I just don't know how safe or comfortable could be traveling or camping with young children. Plus he would like to camp in a kind of semi-primitive area where we would have to use generators. There is no hook ups for electricity or water. He wants to camp at this area for a day, then move to another RV park. I know this sounds like a nice adventure but I am not sure if I want to try a new adventure with young children. I prefer a cabin.

Also, we would have to buy pots, pans, silverware, sheets, comforter, cups etc. they rent all of this but it cost $75.00 per person. I just don't want the hassle to stop by at Walmart to buy all this items that I can not bring in the plane back home.

Has anyone travel in a RV with young children? What was your experience, and woul you recommend it? Any advice would be very helpful.

Answer
You obviously did not grow up during the Great Depression. My mom raised six children of all ages while camping summers in a five by seven canvas tent.

Concerning whether you can carry kitchen utensils and sleeping bags on a plane, you should be able to pack everything you need to live for weeks in a backpack. I spent three weeks backpacking in Alaska last summer. On the flight, I checked my backpack with forty-five pounds of gear. My backpack contained my tent, sleeping bag, a sleeping mattress, clothes, down jacket, rain jacket, one week of food, a towel, a stove without fuel, a spoon, a fork, pocket knife, one fry pan, one plate, two liter water bottles, a water filter, matches, and personal hygiene products. My carry-on day pack contained headlamps, a fire starter, maps, GPS, camera, telephoto lens, computer, and journal. When I backpack, I carry more than $1,000 in gear on my back.

If you are hesitant to spend $75.00 on gear, then you should be staying in neither an RV nor a cabin. You should be sleeping in a tent. You get electricity to charge batteries whenever you get to a public library. You take a shower at a pay shower, campground shower, recreation center, or heat water on a camp stove for a pot that you wet a wash rag and pour over your head to shampoo your hair. Using a gas-powered generator for electricity is not semi-primitive. It is highly-developed, highly-spoiled, obnoxious-to-neighbors camping.

Rocky Mountain National Park is ideal for you since you do not like to camp in a natural setting. However, you will miss seeing some of the most spectacular wilderness areas that Colorado offers. National Park staff are trained to hug teddies like you and help you cope with all of the necessities of surviving in a suburban campground. Estes Park has all of the food and gear that you need within a few miles of the park entrance.

If you decide to not go tent camping, there are cheaper alternatives than renting an RV. Friends of mine tow tent trailers or hard-shell pop-ups including micro-kitchens and standard beds. Set-up is a couple of minutes for these cabins on wheels.

That's a tough one because of the price range you are asking for. Here are some suggestions:

Pickpockets in Rome?!?!?

1musicnut

Do those "undergarment" pouches really work? I have one that goes under the waistline of the pants and another that hangs from a string around your neck under your shirt. I'd like to have as little as possible in my pockets!

Also, I WILL have to carry a small bag (and i look like a tourist anyway...fat, white, blue eyes), so would little padlocks on the zippers be a good idea? Seems like pickpockets on a train or bus would rather go after someone with an easier bag to get in. Am I right??

Any other ideas that might help??

Answer
When we went on our cruise to the Mediterranian and had stops in Rome and some other cities, like Barcelona, we were told to watch for pickpockets. I had read about them before leaving home and so I got one of those pouches that has an elastic waste band and I would put it down in my drawers. My wife did the same. I had my passport and all of my currency in it except what I planned to use immediately that day. I carried another pouch on a string around my neck, but also completely under my clothes. I only pulled it out if I was transacting business and then put it back.

Another pickpocket trick I read about is that one person will spill or spray something on your clothes and then pretend to help you wipe it off. The best advice is to not let anyone you don't know get near you. At one stop in Spain the tour guide pointed out a pickpocket who had a camera around his neck and was trying to pose as a tourist. So be very cautious, wary and aware of people you don't know. My wife uses the little blue plastic zip ties for her bags and backpacks to keep the zippers closed. You can get those at Brookstones.

The Gypsies will be the worse. they hang out around the tourists stops with their hands out and trying to play on your sympathies with kids on their hip.

Babysitting girls that are A handful?

Q. I babysit these sisters who are 7 and 8 and they love to look at my things.
Like if i leave the room and my backpack or purse is on the table or whatev they will grab it and shuffle through my junk and like pull out stuff like my locket that has a picture of my best friend and they are all like "Sadie is this ur boyfriend ooh!Sadie and a boy sitting in a tree" and u get the rest and this was terrible

most embaressing thing ever

The girls got my purse(It was up on a shelf and the moved the chair and stood on phone books and got it down and they dropped it and my....."Girl Stuff" fell out and They were like"What are those Sadie?"

and they ask me questions that i don't wanna answer
like
"Why do u alway's turn red when u see our brother?"
"How come Boogers are green?"(ewww)
and the ever so famous
"Where do baby's come from?"

what should i do?

And i want to keep the job so don't recomend i quit!
the girls are very curious and they have to use my stuff like if i have to stay the night there i wil bring a change ofclothes and they will have to use my clothes like they take my tops and put them on and spill stuff on it and ruin it!

and if i have any jewelry they need to ruin it like pull on it till it breaks or lose them and i keep them in a drawer that they cant reach but they always find a way

I love these girls they are sweet but the just get into everything.

Answer
Tell them to ask their parents certain questions and as for them going through your stuff, stop bringing it unless you need it that night. You can also put a padlock through the metal zipper pulls on most backpacks so they can't get in even if they wanted to. Kids taunt each other and will taunt you--you should expect that. So, sing annoying songs and make fun of them, too! They can take it and they may have a great sense of humor! As for the booger thing--just say IDK and look it up online!

Me and my buddies want to go camping in a few weeks and we are looking for a place where we can go and put up a tent in the woods and sleep there. Not a "campground" with camp sites, but just a national forest were we can deal with everything ourselves. If you know anything in or around San Diego like this please let me know. Or if you could direct me to any website related to southern California camping, it would be most appreciated.

Answer
Some worthy spots in SoCal are actually being shut down due to the California State Budget Crisis. I would recommend Palomar Mountain State Park, but it's one of many being affected by the cuts. You may be able to sneak in and backpack your way to a spot... Or camp at the observatory.

Otherwise, Cuyamaca is a great place to go. Also, any part of the Cleveland National Forest. If those don't work out and you're up for a drive, Id highly recommend Joshua Tree National Park just south of 29 Palms. It's about a 2 hour drive, but GREAT for hiking, camping, rock climbing, exploring, trippin', anything! ;)

Planning for a long walking trip?

Atticus Fi

2 friends and I are planning a walking trip along the west coast from San Diego to Seattle.Any advice on preparations? 2 of us will be carrying hiking backpacks and the other one of those all terrain carts to put stuff in. We will be bringing 27 cans of food that can be easily cooked . We will each start out by carrying 8 water bottles and purchases more on the way.I think it is fair for each of us to carry $200 for supplies.Should we pack my water purifier because I feel like we'll break it some how. We will also be packing first aid, 2 packs of moist wipes, glasses clean/repair kit, gps, cell phone. W e will be wearing jeans/cargo pants, a 5.11 shirt ,sweater, and a boonie hat. Also according to California penal section code 12370 we can wear body armor because our activities are lawful correct? We have 2 level ii kevlar vest and a stab proof vest. I think we will begin our trip on june 20th,2014.The distance between san diego and seattle is about 1260 miles,so that would be like 360 hours of walking. If we walk for 12 hours a day we should reach our destination in like a month? We will however stop at major cities like L.A. for a week and S.F. for 3 days?Should we just sleep on the beach when it is safe to do so because we a have a lightweight tent that can accomodate all 3 of us.I plan to start walking at Imperial beach. Any advice would gladly be appreciated because its been a dream of our for a long time now.
Also should we study the terrain on google maps or not.I think it will be resourceful but m friends want to go in blind because it adds suspense.Btw our average speed will be 3 mph.
Or should we start at petco park becuase near IB is confusing and I dont want to end up on coronado Island? We could follow the the 5 and the 8 and then walk along the shore in la jolla which I think would be easier.

Answer
I think you're going to need a little more planning for this expedition. Many sections of freeway in California prohibit pedestrians, so you will need to get special access from the CHP and Caltrans to walk along the side of the freeways. Oregon and Washington may have similar laws. Additionally, you will need permission through areas like Camp Pendleton (or just get a ride through them).

You say you will be carrying 27 cans of cookable food and 8 bottles of water. On a hot day, each person might go through a gallon of water per day. You might also want a stove and fuel tanks. Where will you be sleeping at night when you can't find a public beach/campground? You are going to come across many sections with no public access - are you planning on camping illegally? staying in hotels or hostels? You don't mention sleeping bags or mattresses.

You should plan out each day based on where you plan to end the day - a campground or hostel or hotel or friends house.

I don't think your estimate of being able to sustain a pace of 36 miles a day (12 hours x 3 miles per hour) is reasonable. I don't even think that 24 miles a day (8 hours x 3 miles per hour) is sustainable. You will need days for nothing but rest, and you will also need to do things like shop for food and toiletries and footwear, or do some laundry. I would strongly recommend trekking poles to help take some of the weight off of your feet. If you backpack for more than two weeks, your feet will likely change shape, and you'll need to buy new footwear that fits the new shape.

Before you and your buddies go all in on this adventure, maybe try going out for a 4-5 days to see what it is like. Take the train to Santa Barbara and walk back to San Diego, and see how far you get, with planning out your route. Plus it will help get you in shape, physically and mentally. You'll also find out how much food you'll be going through to keep up the calorie intake needed to sustain all that hiking.

Also, ditch the body armor. That will just weigh you down and draw unwanted attention. If you're worried about getting shot or stabbed, you probably should do more research about where to go and where to avoid.

Hi, I'm from Malaysia. I want to try solo traveling. I've planned to travel to Perth next year. Is there any good tips that I can use, for a first timer like me? Any good tourism spot in Perth that I should look into?

Thanks!

Answer
Nice one. Traveling is good education and it's fun.
You stay in backpacker hostels, budget hotels, camping grounds or caravan sites if you like, and if you fancy a bit of couchsurfing you can stay in somebody's home.
If you want to try a backpacker hostel before you travel, find one close to home and you'll soon see how it works and you'll meet people who are visiting Malaysia.
Here's one in KL. Price is in UK pounds but it will be in Rinngits or $US when you access the site from Malaysia....see links below.
1 UK pound = 5 Rinngits
http://www.hostelbookers.com/property/index.cfm?fuseaction=propertyDynamic.overview&intpropertyID=31465&strArrivalDate=2012-01-07&intNights=2........
For a cool holiday try the Cameron Highlands. Tanah Rata is a beautiful place to stay at and has some very good tracks for walking and cycling..
I had three excellent years in Malaysia and loved every day of it.

Sometimes you stay in railway stations or bus stations or airports (not always by choice but because of delays or inconvenient times of the transport), or you can take an overnight train or bus and save the cost of accommodation for the night but not too often. Stay healthy.

To get work, remember all countries have work rules and if you are on a visa it'll likely be a tourist visa not a working visa so take care.
Australia has very strict work rules.

You make friends on the way round so just go off by yourself and you'll have the freedom to join up with other people when you want.
Meet new folks in the hostels, go shopping together, share the food and cook a beautiful fusion meal or whatever you can do.

For money...traveling isn't cheap even staying in hostels so spend wisely.
I ate very well in South Africa and you can in South America and most of Asia but not all places in the world are cheap so be careful choosing a destination.
Australia will take around 250 -300 Rinngits a day off you for basic living...hostel and food. Then you have trains and buses and some flights for the long bits.
Long haul flights need to be booked 3-4 months in advance to get the cheapest fare so you get lots of time for reading about a place and getting any necessary visas and medical stuff sorted.
See your government website for travel advice, visa requirements etc.
http://www.kln.gov.my/web/guest/home
Cheap tickets...look at prices for months ahead and you'll find the cheapest period so then you'll have a time scale for booking a flight on that route for when you want to go.
Travelocity and Expedia are good and look at airlines' own sites as well.
http://www.travelocity.co.uk/?tduid=0e2câ¦

Packing...simple. Go empty, come back full.
Take the least you can live with. Clothes are available in every country in the world. Your back does the carrying so be kind to yourself.

Perth is a pleasant city and is quite cosmopolitan. I have some relatives living there. My daughter traveled there alone from the UK and had a very nice time and then backpacked around Australia for a month and had two weeks in the Cook Islands.
She got home safe and well, just as expected. Take normal care as you would in your own towns and cities and you'll be OK.

Sorry if this may be kind of long but anyway. So I started high school at the local public high school. I got all As my freshman year, did varsity cross country, varsity track and varsity soccer. Sophomore year I got all As with two B's. One B in math and one B in Spanish. I did Varsity cross country, varsity track, varsity soccer and travel soccer outside of school. I was also inducted into the beat club. For my junior year my parents felt the public high school was too easy and wasn't challenging me enough. So for my junior year I'm attending the local private prep school. My parents had me tested half way through this year (my junior year) and found out I have dyslexia and dyscalculus (meaning my mind can't do math high then algebra 1). Which it wasn't a big shocker or anything, we kind of figured. My junior year has been kind of a struggle. With trying to do Allegra 2, chemistry with all the math in it, being the new kid again, and going to a very difficult prep school where most of the kids IQs are 150. The school year isn't over yet but so far i have one high A in photography, and all very low Bs in everything else. Meaning it's about an 80 or 79.7 in the rest of my classes. I'm currently doing online math so i can go at my own pace and i have a tutor for chemistry that I see at least three times a week. But it's still a struggle to understand things. I've only taken the SAT once and I didn't really study much and I got a 1310. I took the ACT recently but I haven't gotten my scores back yet. I did travel soccer outside of school this year, I'm on the school sailing team, I'm on the varsity soccer team and co-captain, and I plan to do cross country my senior year along with varsity soccer. This year has just been very difficult for me and my school obviously is a lot harder then most other schools. But I went to a private catholic school my whole life before i started high school. I also do a summer camp that's not like most camps. It's called adventure treks and it's a outdoor leadership camp for teens my age. Where we go backpacking, raft, rock climb, kayak, climb mountains while learning skills and leadership skills. I really want to go to App state. I visited and I feel like it'd fit me great. Do you think I have a chance of getting in?

I'm currently a junior in high school

Answer
Maybe, maybe not. My nephew was in kind of the same situation, he didn't get in at first and he went to community college and then got in for his junior year - he's there now. Transfer is more flexible on grades.

You should know that any change of school like that, right in the middle of your time in high school can be quite jarring, and it's usually not a wise idea to do that because grades suffer. It's hard on teens to make switches like that, and while your parents had your best interests at heart, getting good grades is a sign that things are good, not that they are too easy, so I don't agree with what they did People often don't realize that sometimes the best thing is to stay.

All I can say is that you might want to consider taking time to work on your academics this summer, and make a strong showing your senior year. Hopefully you'll have grades to show when you apply that can counteract your junior year. It's a shame because junior year tends to be the more important year, coming down to the finish line so to speak. App is one of the top Southern schools, and it's competitive - you may have a harder time getting in as a freshman but as my nephew has proven, it can be done later.

You should go to their site and review - here's part of it, this is what the last incoming class looked like grade-wise - and check the links below on freshmen students and transfer students criteria.
2012 Freshman Class Profile
Average weighted GPA of 3.99
Average SAT of 1153 (combination of math & verbal)
Average ACT of 26 composite
88% in state
12% out of state

What kind of tent should I buy?

We bought a pretty expensive tent at Walmart last year and it leaked when it rained (horribly), was hotter than all get out, and blew flat to the ground in a stiff wind. We are going to buy a new one this year and trash the other. Which tent should I buy or what features should I look for to combat rain, heat, and wind.

Thanks.

Answer
No, you did not buy an "expensive" tent at Walmart. Walmart does not sell any expensive, high-quality, lightweight tents. Walmart does sell cheap tents that can be effective for casual use IF you buy a strong seam sealer, like a silicone rubbery adhesive, and spread it across every seam and joint between different fabrics. Furthermore, the reason that your tent "blew flat" or contortioned is because you purchased a tent with cheap fiberglass poles that flex in the wind rather than break. Your existing tent is fine for car-camping in fairly pleasant weather. I even use one for certain car-camping outings when I want a little higher ceiling and am not concerned about weight. For backpacking, I have two $300 tents, a one-person and a two-person backpacking tent, weight respectively two pounds and four pounds, hub-design, low-profile, aluminum poles.

If you want a higher performance tent, then you will need to spend, depending on capacity and style, $300 to $1,000. Do not go cheap on a tent, since failure will end your vacation or force you to spend a lot more money on motels. Features that you need to consider ~ Rain protection: full-rain fly. Heat: adequate ventilation design. Wind: high-grade aluminum poles and a low-profile dome rather than a high-ceiling cabin tent or a very expensive four-season tent. You did not specify sleeping capacity. However, "we" implies a family, so I will offer links to several tents that may meet your criteria. Purchase a tent at least one-person larger than the specifications imply, unless you want a very tight fit. If heat and bugs are a significant problem, then consider also purchasing a screen room.

As best as I can figure from your description of necessary criteria, look at the Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 Tent, $540, 19 pounds, 5' 6" ceiling height or Big Agnes King Creek 6 Tent, $470, 16.5 pounds, 6' ceiling height. If you want smaller and cheaper, Big Agnes Coulton Creek 4 Tent, $300, 9 pounds, 5' ceiling height. I own a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL-1 that holds up well in high-altitude tundra backpacking, $300, 2 pounds, 3' 2" ceiling height.

I haven't thought of what I would do until this week. I really want to know if my plan would work and what are your plans? This is mine:
Pack my sprinter van with 2 axes, the only gun (a gun that pretty much only works to kill a medium sized bird) we have, lots of canned food and freeze dried food, water and 2 filtered water bottles, thick clothing, and pocket knife, a bread knife, and a long rope.
I would go to a very remote place (because walmart is where the zombies would go because that's where everyone is going) I would wrap my head in a scarf, so the smell of my brain is a little more faint, I would pack some food, water, pocket knife, rope, hatchet, and gun, in a backpack and climb the nearest tree and camp out there until i need more supplies. And of course kill any zombies i see while i'm in the tree. After a few, zombie free, days, i would come down and go to the nearest town to find survivors.
Is that a good plan? Whats your plan?

Answer
I love this question, because I recently watched 2 seasons of The Walking Dead on netflix. Personally I'd find a huge home near a major body of water with enough land to have a nice big garden but small enough to fortify it with high fencing so that even non-zombies couldn't get in. Also I'd choose a place where there's lots of wood to cut for heat.. Of course I'd have many crossbows (preferable to guns because of the noise factor) and guns with a ton of ammo.. I'd have lots of fishing gear. I'd clean out pharmacies and grocery stores of needed meds and plenty of non-perishables. Definitely seeds too, to grow food near the lake and use lake water. I'd procure a propane and gas truck filled with fuel. I'd anchor out in the water if necessary, but would prefer to live in the house.

I plan to aggressively get into hiking and add on camping/backpacking later on. Could you give me some tips please? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Good question and a better pursuit. You'll never regret your decision to be in the outdoors and it'll be something you enjoy for the rest of your life.

You've asked a really big question that has a million answers. I highly suggest doing a lot of reading online about the things you need to know.

Remember, there's a big difference between hiking and backpacking and camping. Each come with their own specific skills. But here are the very basics that apply to each.

First, a hiker never goes on the trail without the "Ten Essentials." Look that up online. Basically, they are extra food, extra clothing for layering, flashlight, waterproof matches, first aid kit, extra water and a few others.

Always check the weather before you go anywhere in nature. If there is a chance for anything inclimate be prepared with the right clothes. Remember, cotton isn't our friend on the trail. It's ok for some hot weather hiking but it doesn't absorb or repel moisture from sweat, rain or snow.

ALWAYS stay on the trail. The exception is a VERY short jaunt off trail but keep the main trail in eye's sight. If you get lost, don't panic and don't try and 'guess' your way out of it. You need to read up on this stuff online.

Show proper trail etiquette. If you encounter someone on the trail, the uphill hiker has the right of way on a narrow trail. Hikers have the right of way over bikes. Horses have the right of way over hikers.

NEVER leave ANYTHING behind. Pack it in - Pack it out. That means any food scraps and don't ever feed a wild animal.

Plot your route before you go and it's not a bad idea to tell a friend where you're going and when you're expected back.

While you can build up to getting better gear the two areas you need to be sure and make smart purchases is in your boots and your pack. Each offer different types for the kind of hiking you'll be doing.

Packs are either daypacks, which don't have a frame and are intended for day hikes, or backpacks which vary in size and offer different features. Choose the pack for the kind of hiking you'll be doing most. My favorite brand of pack is Osprey but shop around.

Footwear comes in two styles. Either trail shoes or boots. Trail shoes have a harder bottom than tennis shoes but are also low-cut. Boots come in three varieties. Lightweight, Midweight and heavier backpacking boots. A lot of this depends on the stability and rigidity of the sole. If you're planning on both backpacking and hiking, I'd suggest a midweight boot. My all time favorites are AKU's which are handmade in Romania. They run over 200 bucks but you can pick them up on Sierra Trading Post for a hundred sometimes. A great investment. Other good brands to consider are Vasque, Keen and a lot of people love Merrills. Oh...I highly suggest buying hiking socks made specifically for hiking. A liner sock isn't a bad idea either because it helps soak up the sweat.

OK..last tip. And sorry for going off. I just dig sharing info about hiking.

Remember this one. Nature isn't a theme park. You can die in nature. For real. It doesn't mean you will of course, but the moment you stop respecting nature is the moment you increase your chances for injury. So always consider the worst case scenario and work backwards from there.

What IF I don't judge my time well and I'm out on the trail after dark?
What would happen IF I stumbled from that rock I want to climb to get a better view?
What IF it starts to rain?

But as long as you think a little bit stay within your skill level there is no question you'll be better for the experience. There's been a lot of study's recently about the benefits of being in nature. Remember, as animals we've spent almost our entire existence outdoors. It's only in the very recent history that we've moved indoors. So being outdoors is an instinct for us. And man...there's nothing better than being out on a killer trail and getting a big rush of that instinct. Feels great!

Hike on my brother.

Where can I find a Backpackers backpack in Kansas City, Missouri?

I am traveling to study abroad in Germany in a couple months and I am looking for a pack to go with me.

I've been to Cabella's and Bass Pro but i'm not looking for a camping backpack and when I went to Cabella's the guy had no idea what he was talking about (He admitted it himself).

Any help? We don't have an REI but surely there is a place that could help me out?

Answer
As someone who's done a lot of backpacking and camping in my time - I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean either. As I know it, there are 3 basic kinds of backpacks - frameless, internal frame, and external frame. You may be thinking of external frame as the "camper's backpack" I'm guessing, in which case you are looking for an internal frame perhaps? Frameless is like your basic rucksack, or the type of backpack a kid takes to school, and as there is no shortage of those, I'm guessing it isn't what you want.

You might try Cabella's and Bass Pro again, instead asking for a light (or even ultralight) internal frame pack. Try the Bass Pro in Independence, it should carry more than the Olathe store. Also, any sporting goods store, such as Dick's Sporting Goods at Town Center in Overland Park (or is it Leawood?) or Sports Authority (Lenexa, Tiffany Springs). You can also try an army surplus shop like Mickey's Surplus if that's more your style.

I saw it on the last episode of "Survivorman". He used it along with glycerin and a piece of rhino poo to start a campfire. I want some for my backpacking/camping kit.

Go to www.Looseinthelab.com. If they don't have it, you might try a backpacking store or some place that sells supplies for serious campers.
P.S. Love Survivorman!!

What should I include in my dog first aid kit?

Q. Im looking to build my own doggie first aid kit for when we go camping and backpacking. I've already started on it with a few items. Are there any essential items that I should absolutely have? She is a 40lb aussie collie

Answer
in addition to the tampons the prior answer suggests, you can bring pads as well. Still good at blood absorbison but can act as feild dressing when you wrap it snug around the source. (It'd be better to just have actual bandages to wrap if it's somewhere like the torso or neck but this is quick for places like the legs or tail)

at most livestock feed stores is vetrericyn which is an artifical spray (like what we typicaly use) it's safe for meat animals meaning the medication wont stay in the animal's system after it's been used. Or there's Multi car cut heal. It's the same thing but made out of fish and other animal/plant oils. It takes a little more (moderate - heavy applications rubbed in twice a day) but there's less chance for reaction since it has no actual medication just things the body uses to close wounds.

Q. I am going to L.L. Bean tomorrow, and need to make a decision between the Mountain Hardwear Drifter 2 Tent and the Microlight Tent, Two-Person.

Answer
Mountain hardware tents run small for size if your looking for a 2 man tent get the next size up. They are pretty good for the price they compare to the Colman with weather protection guarantees but look more like the REI half dome 2 in price and style.

The LL bean Microlight Tent, Two-Person. is somewhat of a misnomer, I have never liked their quality and when faced with tough weather situations I am not a risk taker so i would not give that one a try. Back Packer magazine did however and you can read their review here.

Me and my two friends are doing the duke of edinburgh award but need a tent. Any suggestions? we found the Vango Beta 450, is this suitable?

Answer
Even the Vango Banshee, at 2.6 pounds per person, is not a good idea in my opinion. I would support instead each of you carrying an ultralight bivy tent, which should be available even in the United Kingdom, and only weigh 1 kilogram. Of course, I have a strong bias for always carrying everything that I personally need when I go alone into wilderness areas. If for any reason, emergency separation for a rescue or getting disoriented and separated from a group, I think each backpacker should have independent supplies, made redundant by supplies carried by other group members.

Easton Kilo 1 person ultralight tent.
Terra Nova Laser Ultra 1.

I will also link you to other reviewed tents if you decide on a 2 or 3 person tent.

I own and use two backpacking tents:

Hubba Hubba 2-person, 4 pounds, $300 US.
Fly Creek UL-1, 2 pounds, $300 US.

I'm going on a two week backpacking trip through a ymca camp in minnesota and was wondering, is there anything that I should bring that isn't on the :basic need" list? Or any tips for a first timer?

Answer
Just remember that you'll be carrying all of your gear for 2 weeks. Seriously. Every ounce counts, so think really really really hard about everything that you are bringing. Anything that can do double (or triple) duty is a plus.

Some backpackers will even go as far as snipping off the end of their toothbrush and brush in order to save on some weight.

Break in your boots now if they are newer. Blisters are awful on the trail. A travel pack of baby wipes are great for a little personal cleanliness.

I go to college in the fall and i have two classes a day, I'm going to add another class so probably three days have 3 classes. but I'm going to be taking my laptop probably, and i don't know if you carry books to classes? or what? but whats a good not 100 dollars backpack brand. the north face is expensive. what are some good ones? online sites? thanks!

Answer
Just a side note, my mom paid I think 90 bucks for my JanSport backpack when I was a junior in high school. I'm a junior at my university and I'm still using the same backpack. That thing is top notch. And let me tell you, I have given it a lot of use. But it has taken a good beating. My mom had another backpack that was the same brand and it lasted years as well. For me, JanSport has worked phenomenally. Go figure, she got me a Swiss Army backpack and I hate it.

I say go with JanSport. You cannot go wrong. They are simple, light weight, and they work wonderfully. Good quality in my experience.

Also you just have to wait and see what your profs say about taking books to class. Some are super concious of the fact that the book weighs a ton and they allow you to leave them at home and others will want you to take them EVERY day. Just wait for the first day. Don't bother taking your books the first day because you won't need them unless it says so on the syllabus.

Also, this backpack should work for you!
http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=10&pid=TYP7
http://www.zappos.com/jansport-right-pack-black
It's only $58 bucks at zappos. But if you look on the jansport website it will have other links and maybe you'll get a better deal.

Best of luck! Have fun at school!

BTW! The first user is correct. Most professors don't want your laptop out. Why? Because it is gonna be a distraction for you! No matter how strong your will is, you will eventually give in to temptation! Just kidding. But most people will take advantage and the prof won't allow this because of them.

But if you have to wait in between classes and want to get work done then go ahead. All freshmen think they are going to be all over the laptops like in the movies lol In reality it becomes such a burden on you. You'll see.

what do i need to become a fashionable 6th grade ?What do i put in my locker and binder?shcool outfits ?Please

Q. i am goim=ng in to 6th grade and ineed help

Answer
ok, so we've all been there, but trust me middle school is way better than elementary school.

for your binder
- Don't put pictures of high school musical or other childish actors and musicians like the jonas brothers and whoever else are big for the younger kids now. trust me people WILL make fun of you. (i do it all the time haha)

-try to stay as organized as posible. i know you could probably care less about that but it really is good practice for 8th grade. (trust me it can make the difference between passing and failing, i would know lol)

for your locker
- well i always shared lockers with a few friends, like four people all together. in one locker we put morning books, in another afternoon books, one for extra clothes;shoes;gym clothes; etc, and in the last locker we put txt books we never used and just things like that. oh and if you do that make sure you keep a list of each lock combo for each locker in your bag.

clothes!
- this is my fav part =] ok so backpacks are a no go. get a cute tote or messenger bag. im actually considering this one, from delia*s. it can change from a tote to a messenger http://store.delias.com/item.do?categoryID=1856&itemID=50220&sizeFilter=&colorFilter=&brandFilter=
bags like this can be expensive so don't buy it unless it matches with almost everything. also you can make a deal with your mom (or guardian or whoever) convince her/him that a regular backpack might cost them up to $60 so instead ask if you can get 3 $20 totes/messengers. oh and when i say messenger i mean like one of these http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7430539/c/3.html
or this one
http://shop.pacsun.com/girls/girls-handbags/Athena-Brown-Sling-Bag/index.pro
avoid the sketcher kind of messenger bag.
actually avoid anything thats sketcher brand, especially the shoes oh god those shoes are horrible.

- as for clothes, dont go out and deck out your wardrobe in abercrombie and hollister clothes. one bad thing about doing that is because its so expensive youll have only a couple of things for back to school where as if you when out and bought clothes that are cheaper (and not to mention cuter) you could have way more clothes for the same price. another bad thing about buying the a&f and hollister clothes is that its not a style. if you want its ok to buy a zip up hoodie or two from those places but dont buy anything else really. i mean come on, a $20 tank top that white with pink moose on it? thats crazy.
- some places you might want to consider shopping
-pacsun (kind of expensive but its cool)
-delia*s (<33 that store!)
-alloy (basically the same as delia*s)
-american eagle (just avoid the plain t's that say american eagle, instead buy some cute cardigans or something)
-aero (same as ae, dont buy the plain t's that say aeropostale on them)
-wetseal (you can get anything there, clothes, accessories, shoes, etc for really cheap)
-forever 21 (they have super cute clothes with great deals)
-rue 21 (my fav store of all time, amazing deals and fab clothes)
-mandee (another personal fav store of mine, everytime i go there i always find something, actually i got a dress and shoes there for my 8th grade dance)
-zumiez (they have the coolest t's there)
-old navy (they have some cute stuff just dont announce to any one where you got it)
-gap (i dont recommend buying their clothes but they do have cute shoes)
-journeys (you can get some awesome shoes, bags, and t's there.
- joyce leslie (mostly everthing there is either $12 or $14 which is great, its also good if your looking for clothes for a more formal occasion, like a chorus or band concert)
-vintage or thrift shops (great because well lets admitt it sucks to be wearing the same shirt as some one and no one will ever have the same outfit as you if you buy from thift shops, but i would reccomend buying mostly jewelry from there, instead of clothes if you dont like the idea of wearing used clothes)
- macys (they can either be really expensive or really cheap you just have to hunt for the good deals, but overall they have a lot of cute unique tops)
-charlotte russe (i luve that store its soo fab!)

- oh and please, no more kids section, your in middle school now its time for the juniors section.

- Dont shop at limited too! its time to move on from childhood, try the limited, express, or h&m instead.

ok here are some cute must have flats

shoe #1 - a pair of basic black flats are must trust me you'll use them a lot

shoe#5 - get some black flip flops from oldnavy theyr only like $3 and trust me you'll wear them a lot, you might even want to consider buying two pairs

shoe#6- a colorful mary jane is great for your daring days

here are some great basics you need
-http://www.charlotterusse.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3119392
get a fab lace cami for layering, i suggest buying it in black, white, and maybe one bright color like the pink

plain t's are great for layering under flowy camis and tanks

some fab tops to consider
-http://www.zumiez.com/zshop/ProductList.aspx?DepartmentID=4&CategoryID=697&ShopByBrand=False&OrganizationID=-1&ViewAll=true
take a look at all these cool graphic t's from zumiez! i have a couple of those actually

this top is super cute, layer it with an orange color shrug or over an orange plain tee or tank

this shrug is soo fab you can wear it over anything, a cute tank, a graphic tee, whatever! i actually have this exact shrug except mine is from max rave (also a fab store you should check out)

heres the full list of tops from mandee

- rue21 has a bad website, it does them no justice. so i wont bother giving you the link, but i highly recommend that you check out the store

check out the wetseal website theyv always got cool stuff and great deals

- as far as pants go, skinny jeans are great. try to buy mostly all skinnies! avoid flares, although i do recommend buying one pair. you can find skinny jeans almost anywhere, i love the ones from zumiez and aeropostal (theirs are super comfy) if you want a skirt id say try one of these
http://store.delias.com/browse.do?categoryID=450&page=1&size=&color=
the first three, the black&white stripe joanna mini, or the bianca navy skirt on the second page

- as far as accessories go, try some of these
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=1572369
those are all super cute, im not going to go into accessories that much as long as you have the outfit, just match jewelry from there.
BUT
these are some must haves for jewelry
- http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=2400645
get one of those, i suggest silver. i got one from jc penney, real sterling silver for $14

-also, get a necklace with your name on it like this
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=2400676
i suggest silver so you can wear it with the heart tag bracelet.

other accessories
-studded belts are in style too, try to find one in gold or pink, instead of silver&black, for a more girly, softer look.

well i think thats about it =] sorry it took me so long, i know the feeling of being nervous about middle school so i wanted to help you as much as possible

good luck!

oh by the way, i dont know if your school does this, but some schools in the summer will have an orientation where you can take your schedule and find your classes and stuff before the first day of school.

if your school has this, go, and when you do, PAY ATTENTION!! i didnt for mine, i spent most of the day catching up with friends i hadnt seen all summer and on the first day of school i was kind of lost and i regretted not paying any attention at the orientation.

if your school doesnt have one of those then there will be teachers and hall monitors to help you find your way. so dont worry.

oh yeah i forgot about hair and makeup (i was reading your other answers)
i agree with the senior who also wrote a lot. go with brown eyeliner and mascara, you dont need much more than that (i use brown eyeliner and brown mascara)

i also i agree with her on hair, get full bangs (thats what i have) as for length do whatevers comfortable to you, mine is a little longer than shoulder length. i straighten it and it flips out at the bottom. just try to be creative when styling your hair. dont just do the straight straight straight look, add some of your personal flare and your good to go!

How can I make this the best school year ever?

Q. I'm going into eight grade and need tips about teachers, friends, boys, studying, organization, homework, exc. My other two years in middle school didn't go well so I want to make it up. Thanks in advance!

- Sara<3

Answer
Teachers- Get. On. Their. Good. Side. Don't be a teachers pet, because nobody likes those, but don't talk back. I have gotten away with so much because I get on all of my teachers' good sides. [example: my math teacher gave me extra time on a math test because she knew I was struggling. the extra time saved my butt! (and my grade!) ]

Friends- Eight grade brings drama. I'm just warning you, stay out of it. Life is wayy to short to spend it fighting with friends! Be that cool member of whatever cliche of friends you're in..the one who never gets involved in the drama!(;

Boys- Depends on who you are. I refused to get involved with any boys until high school. (I should have just said college, haha. ) It was tough rejecting the offers from the cute boys that would ask me out, but totally worth it. I wanted to focus on grades. In my opinion, saving boy drama until high school at least it totally worth it. [and as I learned once I started dating: it's not even completely worth it then.]

Studying- SO important. Get into good study habits. Set aside time for each class every night so you can study. Studying a little bit each day is SO much easier than cramming for tests! (I'm currently ranked #2 in my Junior class, so I know what I'm talking about! (: )

Organization- Almost as important as studying. Get a (different colored, if you can) binder for each class, and a notebook to match. If you have a locker, buy a little magnetic pencil holder. Get a little planner so you can write down all homework assignments. And, if you want to be as insanely organized as myself, make a calendar for each class for every month. For example, I currently have five calendars hanging on the back of my door. The first is for extra curricular activities and community service events (need them for national honors society and college) and four more for each of my classes this semester. I write down all tests coming up, long term assignments, events, ect. for that specific class. It helps SO much. And for God's sake; get a backpack. I've had the same basic Jansport backpack since 8th grade..it's super cute (and not little kiddish) and has a lifetime warranty. :D

Homework- DO. IT. I've never missed a homework assignment in my life. I'm not kidding. That said, I've also: pulled all-nighters, spent my hour bus ride in the morning doing it, done it in/between classes, done some at lunch (as much as I hate it), ect. Just get it done. It can be a major grade booster! Also- don't copy anyone. That's really low, and will end up getting you in trouble.

Good luck with everything!(:

How to plan for trip to Australia?

camping backpack australia

Will D

I am toying with the idea of packing up a backpack and moving from the U.S. to Australia. I want to experience a different life with new people and new places. I think this would be during the summer in Australia and I would be exploring the West; is this plan feasible? What do I need? What should I expect?

I will be graduating from high school soon and I don't want to go to college right away.
Also if this "living-off-the-land" thing doesn't work, how expensive are rental properties in Australia; how is their economy and job-less rate?

Thanks

Answer
yes, it is a feasible plan. prepare yourself for some very hot weather though (35+ celcius). the further north you go, the hotter it will become. if you are coming for some time i would recommend exploring the rest of australia as well, not just the west. Western australia is very beautiful, but you would be missing out on some fantastic attractions on the east coast (eg the great barrier reef, sydney, byron bay etc) not to mention other lovely parts of australia such as adelaide and melbourne.
you will probably need a visa, depending on how long you plan to stay. bring plenty of sunscreen, loose, warm-weather clothing, and your sense of humor! be prepared to do a fair bit of traveling around - the towns are quite far apart, especially on the western side.
not quite sure what you mean by 'living off the land'... you will definitely not want to be camping or anything if there is a heatwave! rentals can be found for a reasonable price, however since you wont be here all that long and you are from another country, land-lords may be reluctant to rent to you. backpacker hostels such as the YHA hostels provide cheap share accommodation that could be right for you.
as for the jobless rate etc, we have done much better than a lot of other places around the world, our unemployment rate has actually been going down over the last few months and the economy is recovering from the GEC. Travelers such as yourself often find short-term jobs grape-picking or working in restaurants.
anyway, sorry to make this so long! best of luck with your trip.

EDIT: i would just like to point out that one of the other answers here gives a misleading idea about australia... a 2 bedroom place in the city suburbs of melbourne/adelaide/perth is NOT going to be 5000 a month unless you are right in the CBD or it is very fancy and brand new. A 3 bedroom house in Adelaide would be about 300-400 a week (we do rent by the week). also, eating out here is relatively cheap! you can get a GOOD meal at a nice restaurant for about $60-$70 inc drinks etc. the living standard here is high, but it does not have to be expensive. of course, there is an expensive option as there is everywhere else, but you can get by on a very minimal income and still be comfortable. just thought i would point this out!!

What is the best and cheapest way to travel abroad?

Scream you

I want to travel somewhere in Europe next summer. I am going to a CC this fall, so when I want to travel will be after my first year of college. Are there any good programs for a 18/19 yr CC college student to go through? I don't care if I have to work or volunteer, I just want to be able to live somewhere in Europe for the summer. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can visit any or all of the Schengen countries as a tourist for up to 90 days without a visa as a tourist assuming you're from the US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. You could also visit the UK. However, it would be illegal for you to work there without a visa that specifically allows it. There is a working holiday visa available for stays of over 90 days that would allow limited work for young people from Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, but not the US.

Prices will depend on exactly where you start from, where you go, exactly when you visit, how long you stay, the accommodations you use and what you see/do/eat. People who backpack around Europe generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget (not including airfare); 3 months would require around $9000. However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel. Prices really depend on exactly where you come from, when you visit, how you get around and what you see/do/eat.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point. Tuscany is an entire region, not a town. The most convenient airports to fly into will be Pisa or Florence, but Rome or Bologna are also reasonable options.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you. Palermo is a long trip by train, Naples to Palermo is one leg of the trip where you might consider flying.

http://www.seat61.com/ . This includes a huge amount of information on train travel throughout Europe - much more than there is room for in an answer here. The site has links to the various national train websites where you can find schedules and prices for trains. It also includes detailed descriptions of railpasses. This will tell you how to determine whether a railpass is worth the money for your trip (in Italy where I live railpasses are almost never worth the cost), which railpass to get, and how to use the railpass. There's also information on what to avoid in particular places.

Driving can be expensive; fuel prices, tolls and parking all add up, but it can become cost effective for groups. You can check sites like Avis, Europcar, Sixt, etc, for your specific rental cost. Picking up in one country and dropping off in another can be very expensive. You can get driving distances and estimates fuel and toll costs on viamichelin: http://www.viamichelin.com/ .
.
http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Shopping depends entirely on you.

Best winter camping in Oregon?

Orion

Looking for a nice, relatively easy mid-December backpacking and camping journey for 4 days in Oregon - Any suggestions?

Orion
Thank you but I can also run a web search. :) I'm hoping for someone with some personal experience who can offer some suggestions as to a nice trip.

Answer
Dec. is the wet month for Oregon. I spend Jan. through May van camping along the Oregon Coast, mostly in Curry County, Port Orford and Brookings. I plan on rain for part of each day. Actually, you get dry spells lasting for several days. Which makes it all worth while. There is a coast trail along the beach for the entire length of the state. You are only on the road in a few of the towns and for bridges over the rivers. And if the rain gets to bad there are buses several times a day on the road, HWY US 101. Check on the web for schedules. Please remember the rain on the coast is snow in the mountains, LOTS of snow. The storms are great to watch. There are lots of streams and water falls along the trail. When the sun comes out it is fantastic. but you will live in Gor-tex, the only rain gear to use, boots to hat. Tent with rain fly and bathtub floor.

Check out the Lost Coast and the Redwood National Park just a bit south in Ca.(The land of more money than brains) Also the Avenue of the Giants along the eel river also in Ca.

If you want to car camp and day hike I recommend Humbug Mt. State Park by Port Orford. There are two good trails, up the mountain or along the coast., good beach. Close by the are Orford Heads State Park, Arizona Beach State Park and Cape Blanco State Park. That's only about 15 miles of coast but, my favorite.

What are the school bag fashions at your school?

And what's your school bag style?

I go to a all-girls school in London, so mainly everyone has the Nike Just Do It bags, bags from Primark, oversized handbags and some have these tiny leather bags

My new school bag is a shocking pink metallic mini backpack from Primark!
I like the oversized bags, I mean they look fashionable and you can fit all your stuff.

I think it is stupid to carry those Just Do It bags - it doesn't even fit a standard A4 book...

Answer
oversized bags :)

like big indie type of bags.
BetsyVille Bags
Coach

strapy gladiator sandals are really in as well.

What things should I keep in my backpack?

Artistic D

Like makeup or essential things that will come in handy for girls. What do you keep in your school backpack?

Answer
Besides lady essentials like a pad or a tampon i keep:

a small travel sized deodrant
chap stick
a small compact mirror
scented lotion (I recommend buying the small travel size bath and body lotions and using that instead of perfume because the scent stays longer on your body)
small umbrella
a comb
gum

something else i recommend keeping is hand sanitizer which i also need to start carrying and as for make up, i do very light make up for school so i dont take it with me because i dont really need to touch my make up because i only do my foundation routine and mascara and some days i wear eye liner but other wise thats it.
