best backpack tent review image
Q. I am going to L.L. Bean tomorrow, and need to make a decision between the Mountain Hardwear Drifter 2 Tent and the Microlight Tent, Two-Person.
Answer
Mountain hardware tents run small for size if your looking for a 2 man tent get the next size up. They are pretty good for the price they compare to the Colman with weather protection guarantees but look more like the REI half dome 2 in price and style.
The LL bean Microlight Tent, Two-Person. is somewhat of a misnomer, I have never liked their quality and when faced with tough weather situations I am not a risk taker so i would not give that one a try. Back Packer magazine did however and you can read their review here.

Me and my two friends are doing the duke of edinburgh award but need a tent. Any suggestions? we found the Vango Beta 450, is this suitable?
Answer
Even the Vango Banshee, at 2.6 pounds per person, is not a good idea in my opinion. I would support instead each of you carrying an ultralight bivy tent, which should be available even in the United Kingdom, and only weigh 1 kilogram. Of course, I have a strong bias for always carrying everything that I personally need when I go alone into wilderness areas. If for any reason, emergency separation for a rescue or getting disoriented and separated from a group, I think each backpacker should have independent supplies, made redundant by supplies carried by other group members.
Easton Kilo 1 person ultralight tent.
Terra Nova Laser Ultra 1.
I will also link you to other reviewed tents if you decide on a 2 or 3 person tent.
I own and use two backpacking tents:
Hubba Hubba 2-person, 4 pounds, $300 US.
Fly Creek UL-1, 2 pounds, $300 US.
