Is it portable? Could I take it around a university? Is the g55 better for portability?
Thanks in advance

Answer
One should do thorough research before buying a lap top.
ASUS G75 Laptop - 17.3 inch screen. 4.4 Kg weight. Decide for yourself whether it is easy to lug around. A net book is much more portable.
http://www.gadgetreview.com/2012/04/asus-republic-of-gamers-g75-laptop-review.html
"A high-end Clevo/Sager or an Alienware could eat the G75 alive with the 7970M. (3Dmark 11 P5600 STOCK!! vs P2700 of the 670M, not to mention these machines are sold at similar prices!) even my old P150HM with a 6990M can crush this thing in terms of gaming performance. plus Alienware and Clevo machines have very good build quality too, definitely comparable to ASUS.

ASUS gaming laptops has been very disappointing since the G74 (at least to me). This thing really doesn't deserve the "Republic of Gamers" tag."

As for ASUS G55 :http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G55VW-S1020V-Notebook.74851.0.html
"One of the things that is less ideal is the size--although the screen is only 15.6 inches, the laptop's size and weight tell a different story. The G55VW weighs no less than 3.8 kg (8.4 pounds), which is heavier than some 17.3-inch desktop replacement laptops such as the HP Envy 17 or dv7. It also has a relatively large frame around the display and the cooling solution protrudes significantly from the back of the laptop. This also puts a limit on how much you can tilt the display backwards--the lid can only be opened to an approximate 120-degree angle."
http://love-battery.blogspot.in/2012/05/asus-g55-series-gaming-laptop-and-acer.html
"ASUS G55 rear fuselage thick front-end thin, the screen open, emerged in the keyboard appear before a tilt angle, this design will be more comfortable. Asus G55 ROG 15 inches, this test of the G55 is equipped with 15.6-inch 3D display, NVIDIA 3D Vision solution, the screen refresh rate of 120Hz, 3D display excellent results, but the 1366 Ã 768 resolution rate slightly regret.

For a high-end gaming notebook, the ASUS G55 is equipped with 15.6-inch display, but its volume than the ordinary 15-inch notebook leniency many, and had bare metal weight 3.81kg, coupled with the high-power adapter , the travel weight of 4.5kg, it is recommended that we use good quality and some of the backpack carrying." . . . .

Will I get in Appalachian State University?

Sorry if this may be kind of long but anyway. So I started high school at the local public high school. I got all As my freshman year, did varsity cross country, varsity track and varsity soccer. Sophomore year I got all As with two B's. One B in math and one B in Spanish. I did Varsity cross country, varsity track, varsity soccer and travel soccer outside of school. I was also inducted into the beat club. For my junior year my parents felt the public high school was too easy and wasn't challenging me enough. So for my junior year I'm attending the local private prep school. My parents had me tested half way through this year (my junior year) and found out I have dyslexia and dyscalculus (meaning my mind can't do math high then algebra 1). Which it wasn't a big shocker or anything, we kind of figured. My junior year has been kind of a struggle. With trying to do Allegra 2, chemistry with all the math in it, being the new kid again, and going to a very difficult prep school where most of the kids IQs are 150. The school year isn't over yet but so far i have one high A in photography, and all very low Bs in everything else. Meaning it's about an 80 or 79.7 in the rest of my classes. I'm currently doing online math so i can go at my own pace and i have a tutor for chemistry that I see at least three times a week. But it's still a struggle to understand things. I've only taken the SAT once and I didn't really study much and I got a 1310. I took the ACT recently but I haven't gotten my scores back yet. I did travel soccer outside of school this year, I'm on the school sailing team, I'm on the varsity soccer team and co-captain, and I plan to do cross country my senior year along with varsity soccer. This year has just been very difficult for me and my school obviously is a lot harder then most other schools. But I went to a private catholic school my whole life before i started high school. I also do a summer camp that's not like most camps. It's called adventure treks and it's a outdoor leadership camp for teens my age. Where we go backpacking, raft, rock climb, kayak, climb mountains while learning skills and leadership skills. I really want to go to App state. I visited and I feel like it'd fit me great. Do you think I have a chance of getting in?

I'm currently a junior in high school

Answer
Maybe, maybe not. My nephew was in kind of the same situation, he didn't get in at first and he went to community college and then got in for his junior year - he's there now. Transfer is more flexible on grades.

You should know that any change of school like that, right in the middle of your time in high school can be quite jarring, and it's usually not a wise idea to do that because grades suffer. It's hard on teens to make switches like that, and while your parents had your best interests at heart, getting good grades is a sign that things are good, not that they are too easy, so I don't agree with what they did People often don't realize that sometimes the best thing is to stay.

All I can say is that you might want to consider taking time to work on your academics this summer, and make a strong showing your senior year. Hopefully you'll have grades to show when you apply that can counteract your junior year. It's a shame because junior year tends to be the more important year, coming down to the finish line so to speak. App is one of the top Southern schools, and it's competitive - you may have a harder time getting in as a freshman but as my nephew has proven, it can be done later.

You should go to their site and review - here's part of it, this is what the last incoming class looked like grade-wise - and check the links below on freshmen students and transfer students criteria.
2012 Freshman Class Profile
Average weighted GPA of 3.99
Average SAT of 1153 (combination of math & verbal)
Average ACT of 26 composite
88% in state
12% out of state

Madelyn

My name is Madelyn. I'm 11.I live in Florida, USA. I am going to be starting school on August 20th 2012, which is in a few days. My orientation is August 16th 2012. I have not gone school shopping yet. I will do that the weekend before school starts. Is there and specific things I should buy? Besides obvious stuff that will be on the supply list. I also want to be prepared for 6th grade. I need ANY TIPS you have or can find on the internet. Please also AS MANY as possible. Here are some things I want/really need advice/tips on:
~boys
~drama
~homework
~schoolwork
~electives (also information/tips for different electives)
~bathrooms (during class, ETC)
~bullies/bullying (how to deal with a bully, and what to do If I see someone being bullied)
~being/getting/staying organized (one of my biggest concerns, I could never stay organized in elementary school)
~backpacks
~buses (how to act on the bus, ETC. I rode the bus in in elementary school, but it could be different from middle school buses)
~teachers (how to react to teachers, what kind of different teachers are there)
~friends (how to make new friends ((I'm shy)) I have some friends from Elementary school going to the same school as me)
~clothes (what to wear on the first days and first weeks, how much to buy)
~schedule (how to work around it and use and follow it)
~7th graders and 8th graders
AND ANY OTHER TIPS YOU CAN FIND. PLEASE. I'M DESPERATE. I'm excited for middle school, yet scared.Again as many tips as possible, long and describable. Or websites that can help<3 All help is appreciated<3
Talia Rose, thank you, but I don't have any money or extra money to buy a book. Any possible way to read it online?
"?" Thank you. You helped :) I also wont have a locker. And my HS is 2 minutes away, but my MS is like 45 minutes away and my parents will be at work and don't wanna waste gas.

"allonmyown", thank you also
Thank you in advance to everyone who helps

Answer
boys: your going to be in 6th just make friends with guys and girls no need for relationships
drama: try to stay out of it as much as possible. You hear a rumor don't spread it.
homework/schoolwork: try to do ask much as possible. if you don't get something ask a teacher and if it's hard to get it all done talk to your teachers they will help and understand.
bathrooms:depending where your locker is to your classes if your locker is close to a class just drop off your stuff in class and tell your teacher you have to use the bathroom.(if your late to class they will understand)
bullies: Don't spread rumors. Try to be nice to everyone you don't know how a persons day is.
organized:if your locker has shelves put your books on one and notebooks and folders on another or put your class supplies before lunch on one and after lunch on another.
Backpacks:At my schools we just put them in are lockers before school
Buses: same as elementary but 6th in front 7th middle 8th back that is how it usually is sit with friends
teachers: be respectful. don't be scared of them.
friends:join clubs. give compliments to people. Smile!
clothes: don't change your style just because your in sixth grade just wear what you like and buy what you can.
schedule: walk your schedule when you pick it up. What i did was i got my books and stuff for 2 classes then i went to my locker.
7th and 8th: in are school we had a different wings in are school so the different grades never really saw each other
for other tips: don't be scared. don't try to act "cool" or popular you do that no one will like you.
Hope this helped and good luck have fun too

My only friends ditched me and my crush hates me! HELP?

Jessica K

Hey guys! (sorry its long) So heres my life story in a summary. Here's how middle school goes:
So in sixth grade i was a total weirdo. (you know those types?) and i must have been one of the only non studious asian smart kids. so anyways. i had ADHD. the hyper active unfocused disorder thing. (I am 13 years old now and im in 8th grade. I need advice from people around my age. i want answers that really help. not like "you should tell them how you feel" and advice adults/ counselors would normally give that dont really ppl like me. Also please dont give answers like"well your friends should just goto hell." or "find new friends")
So anyways. i was a dorky asian kid with a roller backpack 0.o lmao. okay. So i didnt really have friends because i was a dork in elementary as well. My only friend was this girl who didnt even like me and she was from my old school. All my classes were in alphabetical order so i sat next to this guy always. i never thought much of him until later when we became friends. we were always playful and stuff but i told the one friend from my old school that i liked him. That was a bad idea because she told everyone. it soon spread around the whole 6th grade population and i was humiliated by the day it got to him. the playfulness had stopped and and he ignored me completely. i was being awkward around him too but he never hated me until he found out i liked him. so enough on 6th grade.
7TH GRADE: so that year i made 2 friends. Im giving them fake names so its easier. My friends were lily and kora. we hanged out together always and passed locker notes etc... everything best friends do. (now i was less of a dork and less embarrassing to be with. i guess the guy i liked made me more self conscious his fake name is going to be jake ) So yeah bff right? well 7th grade passed and stuff i dont relly remember. Lily was very academically smart and a little high strung and judgemental. She always talked about grades, clothes, shopping, other girls etc. (shes not a girly girl ) but she had a nice side:) that came out with me and kora. she was funny and generous. (shes a sagittarius-if that helps?) Kora was really daffy and loved kiddie stuff. her grades were okay but she copied most of it. she didnt really use her common sense and was sort of too optimistic.(shes a libra-the scales)Im okay with grades but math sucks and im the most practical and serious of the two. i do have a playful side tho! when you get to know me i do the weirdest stupidest things. without shame(i am a taurus)
:P lol. But heres some details to remember during my story just cuz
-i eat a lot but dont gain weight
-my smile isnt perfect
-im really strong. i can lift my dad lol
-i have very few clothes and i dont like to spend too much money (asian-_-)
-i base most of my social problems off the zodiac (not chinese zodiac)
-i am japanese and people compare me to this really ugly japanese teacher at my school :( they say i look like her (i guess its only cuz they know were japanese)
-no one popular likes me. (either that of they think im weird because i already made impressions on them in 6th grade)
jake is in this little group of popular asian guys
(i hate using the word popular. it sounds weird coming from me)
-me & lily have FB btqs.(if you know what that is)
-lily has super neat handwriting that i tried to copy and now she hates me for that :(
SO! remember those!
8th grade :/ i was starting new. so i tried not to be self conscious and hate anybody
during the summer i stayed in touch with lily but all we talked about was money, clothes, shopping, business. Stuff that breaks friends apart and makes them into business partners instead.Anyways today is sept. 13, 2012 just to track the date down
Anyways. lily and kora play this game and i know its just being playfull but they pretend that they hate me and say jk later. i guess they both like each other more than me but to me theyre equal so i cant choose between them (also theyre my only close friends. they leave me and im forever alone -..-) ive told them that the"game"is rude and they should stop but after i told them that i was being all casual and said oh whatever you guys dont have to.So now theyre"wifeys"and they ditch me for fun and steal stuff from me and make fun of my appearance and stuff(they always give the stuff back, say jk or let me know were still bff)but now the locker notes lily writes to me are short and meaningless. she fakes her handwriting so i wont copy it. and she fake whispers to kora just to make me jealous LOL ok and comments on my clothes. they say my smile looks like a sausage and i have a troll face. they also said i have horse legs cause i run fast. make fun of my japanese last name which means something perverted in english sadly. Mostly lily makes me feel insecure and ugly without knowing.I still need to keep them as friends cuz theyre my only ones so PLEASE HELP THNX!
The thing is that i apparently have the inability to make new friends because i feel uncomfortable around others that i havent bonded with for like 3 years like lily and kora. theyre extremely loyal when im alone with only one of them but yeah i cant ditch them because thats one thing i dont wanna do. i just want them to stop being judgmental and and to stop playing their game. i put the guy thing in there cuz thats just one problem right now but hes never gonna talk to me so i dont give a **** so yehh. i just wanna be friends now. But the past two years i rlly liked him -,- not anymore but still. SOOO i just realized how long my story was. HAHA. wow. i wouldnt even type that much for an english paper but i read that someone thought this was emotional? Okkayy. im not a very emotional person but ill accept that (: Help me make them quit their game and stuff. i know theyre just kidding because they tell me everything and show me their texts so i know they dont hate me. Still tho they sho

Answer
I know this might not be my domain, since I'm a guy, but I have had my fair share of ups and downs on the highschool - social ladder. The fact is, most people these days have their head up their ass. (Excuse my phrasing, comes with being Aussie) I just decided to keep a couple of friends close to me, ones that I could trust and ditch all the rest. I dropped out of school and I'm now studying at home. (I'm in grade 9 by the way) Thought this may not be the best choice for you, it was for me and it's always an good option.

Another option would be to ditch those friends and find new ones, there has to be better people out there than "Lily" and "Kora". Also, don't bother with relationships or love when you're in middle school/high school. They never work out because most people aren't mature enough to handle a proper relationship at that stage. Just wait 'till you're in your last two years of highschool or in college.

Hope this helped and Good luck.

How Do I Get My Bad Bus Driver Fired?

Angel

I have a really bad bus driver at my school. He will swear at us and sometimes he looks drunk. He almost crashed into a tree and almost hits pedestrians. One time food was falling out of a kindergardeners backpack so he threw the kids backpack away. Everyone on our bus complains to our teachers, and our parents. The teachers always say "That's how rumors will get started so stop lying and starting rumors". The parents will always say that we are probably bad on the bus and that we deserve it. We can't do anything! Nothing works! One time he even said "SHUT THE HELL UP ANDSIT DOWN NOW YOU B*****! That just scared me! PLEASE HELP US WE NEED THIS BUS DRIVER GONE!

Answer
first off, debris on the floor (such as food from backpacks) is very hazardous since it could roll to the front of the bus and get stuck under the brake pedal causing an accident. second, I have believe it or not I was in school once and rode a bus to school, kids on a bus can be very rude and very distracting for the driver. it is a bus drivers duty to do what he/she has to in order to make sure that kids get to and from school safely. as far as almost hitting a tree, he could have been distracted by rude kids or maybe you are just saying that to try and get sympathy from people. don't interfere if you have no knowledge in what it takes.

I need to find a way to make laminated cards about the size of a credit card.?

Donna

I am trying to make tags (either plastic or laminated paper) for kids backpacks and their sports bags. I would really appreciate any information on how to do this without spending 1,000.00. Thanks

Answer
Also, there's a difference between "laminating sheets" or pouches (which are used with pressure and heat) and just the self-adhesive sheets of clear plastic sold by the small or larger box at office supply stores which can also be used in the general definition of "laminating" ---these would be the equivalent of having an 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of clear packing tape, with a removable backing sheet stuck to it.
I always have a box of these around because they come in so handy for many little laminating jobs.

Here are the self-adhesive laminating sheets I'm talking about, like these by Avery:
http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=product.Details&catalogcode=WEB01&productcode=73602 (their photo shows laminating a larger certificate, and folding over from the *short side* though not the long side as I mention below)
or this one:
http://www.discountofficeitems.com/avery-dennison-selfadhesive-laminating-sheets-ave73603-office-products-1442.html?manufacturers_id=10318&cPath=200001_200087_200093_114183 )

To use one of these over a small cardstock/paper/plastic card while still leaving a border of clear lamination on all sides, one way to do it would be to:
...Cut a rectangle from the plastic sheet (still on its backing paper) that's a little wider than the width of the card (long edge), and twice as long as its short side plus a little more.
...Peel off the backing sheet and lay the adhesive plastic down sticky side facing up.
...Place the card on the plastic near the bottom but with a bit of a margin left.
...Then carefully fold the rest of the clear sheet down over the card *leaving a margin at the top where the sticky sheet will stick only to itself*... kind of roll it down so you won't get any wrinkles you can't smooth out with a fingernail.
...Now trim away with scissors any of the extra lamination you don't want on the 3 non-folded sides, and run a fingernail or butter knife around the margins next to the card to completely seal it in.

You can also do this *without leaving any excess lamination* around the edges by folding the lamination sheet tightly to the card in the foldover step, and trimming away *all* the excess clear sheet, but that may leave the very edges susceptible to water, etc.

You can then punch a hole in the lamination border only, or in the card-and-lamination area, with a hole punch then add a ball chain or some kind of cording, etc.

I've done this kind of thing before often, and it works well.

P.S. If actual packing tape is wide enough for what you want and you have some around, it can be handled and cut more easily if you lay a long piece of it onto waxed paper first (which substitutes for the backing paper of purchased laminating sheets).

Looking for a good camera bag or backpack, has to be able to hold at least 3 lenses and two camera bodies as well as some other pockets for other camera goodies. Thanks!

Answer
Think tank and Gura Gear make the best camera bags.

Gura Gear is probably out of your price range, but you can by a Think Tank backpack such as a Streetwalker Pro for about the same price as most of the other backpacks. The Streetwalker Pro will hold the items you have:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OOKFJM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001OOKFJM&linkCode=as2&tag=boatprojcom-20

And here is a review of the Streetwalker Pro:

http://www.althephoto.com/gear/streetwalker.php

Kata also makes some very good backpacks.

Tamrac, Lowepro, and similar in my view are not as good - they have a tendency to fall apart after a couple of years of heavy use.

Domke bags are old-school - made in the USA, and traditionally have been good bags - and for a bag, they have a very loyal following - which is surprising for a bag. But they are not the best in my view. Some models lack much protection for your gear (some have no padding). They are also made with old-school materials such as canvas that may not be the best materials these days.

Here is a rather tongue-and-cheek video about the ruggedness of 4 different brand camera bags. To be sure, the extreme tests these characters do on the camera bags won't be anything you will probably ever encounter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0wLqStdXNw

When you look for a camera bag, look for those brands that offer a lifetime warranty (Gura Gear, Think Tank, Kata, etc). They are no more expensive than some of the other brands that only offer a 5yr or less guarantee.

What is the best sleeping bag to get for camping in the Rocky Mountains?

elizabeth

Should I get a cold weather sleeping bag, or warm weather if I am camping in the summer months? Are higher altitudes colder even in the summer?
Specifically the Colorado area, in a designated campsite in Rocky Mountain National Park. Nothing too wild here (I'm a beginner, lol)...I won't be hiking to the campsite. Thank you for the information, guys!

Answer
Here is my opinion. others will disagree, but I don't care. I have lots of experience and I'm an independent old fart. First, Down is warmer than any other insulation. It lasts longer and compresses better. In modern tents you will not have an issue keeping it dry. New fabrics are more water resistant than older shells. So don't believe those critics that say down isn't good because it looses it's insulaation value when wet. In well over 40 years of backpacking and climbing in Washington, Alaska and California I have managed to keep my down dry and am loving it. Next, get a bag that will work for at least three seasons. Next, a limit of 2.2 pounds (1000grams) is maximum you need or want to carry. If price is an issue you might check the REI down Kilo bag. I don't own one, but the reviews are quite good. If price isn't an issue check out Marmot and Western Mountaineering brands. Don't pay much attention to temp. ratings, as they vary by manufacturer. Customer reviews are a better way to evaluate bags. If you purchase quality it will last a long time and you will never regret it when you climb into your comfy bag on a cold night.

Hey guys could you help me get ready for high school?

Danielle

Okay. I am not sure whether to bring a backpack, messenger bag, or tote to school. I'm going to be a sophomore. I used a backpack freshmen year, but lots of other girls had totes. I mean the backpack was no problem, but I'm not sure because the backpack may sometimes be to bulky and may get in the way of things. And if I do get a backpack or messenger bag, is it okay if I but Dickies brand. Will it carry enough books? Thanks.

Answer
If its anything like my high school, you'll want to use a backpack like Jansport. That is a sturdy brand and they're cute. Since backpacks just go on the floor next to the seats, you shouldn't buy a tote bag that's super cute and will get dirty unless you have a basket underneath or are okay with it getting dirty.
I think a backpack is better for comfort but if your teachers give your class a home set of books (one to keep at home) then use a tote cause you wont have to bring a book to class.
If both is an option, do that and see which suits you better.
Also you can carry your books or put them in your locker instead of jamming them into your backpack.
Dickies is a good brand and ehh backpacks aren't really that bulky unless they roll on the floor :p

good luck! And whichever choice you make im sure will be fine.
yay for class of 2012! :)

Is it safer for a child to have an ill-fitting shoulder belt or a lap belt?

children backpack injuries

children backpack injuries image

J D

My little one is 8 and legally not required to use a booster. Because of her size I prefer to have her in a booster still, but sometimes she has to ride without one. I'm wondering if its safer for her to ride with a shoulder belt that cuts across her neck or a lap only belt (in the back seat of course).

Answer
Neither. Riding in a lap only belt could kill her from internal abdominal injuries, and from her head striking whatever is in front of her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYwQBUDsceA

The shoulder belt rubbing on her neck is not a safety concern, but if she's small enough to have the shoulder belt rub her neck that means the lap part of the belt is probably riding up on her tummy which can also cause severe abdominal injuries or she could slip right under the seat belt- here's what happened to one 8 year old not in a booster http://boosttil8.com/

Just looking for equipement and tips for a 3 day camping trip.

Answer
as an eagle scout i did a lot of camping in various types of weather here is what you need:

tent
backpack (you will be able to fit almost everything in one as opposed to suitcases; needs to be at least 4800 cubic inches)
a backpacking stove
eating utensils (such as metal pots and pans and cutlery this will make for easy cleanup)
as much food as necessary for the trip
clothing for the season
a Global Positioning System (get one in the range of about 300 to 400. they are good and some can float on water)
lots of water
a means of communication ( such as a cell phone)
a map and compass (if you re not careful the batteries in the gps will run out)
toiletries ( such as a toothbrush)
a shovel to dig your latrine
a flashlight
a watch
Extra Batteries
rain gear for everyone in your group
highly reflective blanket
fire starters
wood (if you're going to a campsite; If not you can just collect some in the woods)
matches or another way of starting a fire
let someone know where you re going and when you re expecting to be back so they know when to send for help if necessary
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST TAKE ANOTHER RESPONSIBLE ADULT. YOU MUST HAVE A BUDDY BECAUSE YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU AND/OR YOUR INJURIES !!!! YOU'RE CHILDREN WILL NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO

I am shopping for personalized gifts for my children for the coming Christmas. Can anyone tell me the best place to look for personalized step stools, personalized elmo cds and/or Stephen Joseph personalized quilted backpacks?
Would appreciate the suggestions!

Thank you,

Answer
Look no further than Its Just 4 Me.

By far the best deals for Christmas gifts and childrens toys can be found there. Anything Elmo related and especially the step stools are marked way below retail.

How can I fix my life, without help?

Music I

I've posted questions about this a million times, but no answer has ever really helped. This might be long, but please read??

I want to die. Everyday, I just want to die. I know, so many people have it so much worse than me, and that makes me feel like a horrible person for whining, when my problems are so petty. I've been cutting since I was nine, and bulimic since I was nine, and anorexic since I was 12. My brother, who's 2 years younger raped me, and I could've stopped him, and I should've stopped him, but i didn't. I feel so much quilt inside, because I was nine when he did that, and a while later, he told my cousin who was 4 at the time to show him her private place and he'd give her a dollar. She didn't, and he never touched her, and she doesn't remember it, but I still feel horrible. I've kind of been the one trying to raise my brothers, one who's 2 years younger, and the other who's one year younger, and get my sister who's 2 years older ready to go to college, because my mom's an alcoholic, and my dad's addicted to pills. I have tried so hard to stay strong, but I can't do this on my own. I can't ask for help. I can't stop cutting. I can't stop starving. I can't stop wanting to die. I'm trying so hard, and I can't get help either. What am I suppose to do? I cannot get help from any outside source. No one knows about my family problems, or anorexia/bulimia, or cutting. My mom knows I cut. And, sh hates me for it. She's said that. I have at least 500 cuts from myself. I can't stop. I can't talk to my friends about it, because i have no one I can trust. I've never opened up to anyone about anything, and I don't want to. I don't trust anyone. I don't know how I can keep trying to fix all this. I don't know how to do anything. Can someone please just answer as though they were talking to a friend going through this, instead of someone behind a computer screen? Please, help me? Please? I have to do this on my own, so how do I do that? Please, help me?

Answer
Hey :) i've answered your questions a few times, and I really am hoping you will listen.

Really, what I think you should do, is GET OUT ASAP. If what I have already told you hasn't helped, then you need to get away from that house. First day of school, pretend you're going, take your backpack, but only bring essentials (food, water, hairbrush, etc.). DO NOT BRING ANYTHING YOU CAN CUT YOURSELF WITH. This will make you be tempted to cut yourself, or commit suicide. Go to the salon, and get your hair dyed, or just buy some black hair dye from the drugstore, and read the instructions carefully before using. Cut your hair with scissors, or give yourself bangs, sidebangs. Then go to the bearest orphanage, or contact childrens aid. You will get help. I reccomend bringing your phone with you, and as much money as you can. You should have some saved up, but if you don't go to school the first day only, just to ask your closest friend if you can borrow money if you don't have enough to buy hair dye. Remember before you leave, to look up where the nearest orphanage or police station is. If you really feel like killing yourself, and you need the help for real, look up directions to a mental institution/ psych ward. Believe me, all this may sound extreme, but it might be the only way to keep yourself alive. Please read these instructions carefully if you are going to follow them. All items listed here are necessary. NOTHING THAT YOU CAN CUT YOURSELF WITH is the key. If you need to, sleep in your school library or janitors closet one day if you need to, to conserve money. Life sucks sometimes. You gotta find a way to live through it, and make the 'suck' part go away. Honestly, your childhood life will never be perfect. But keep those grades throughout highschool, and you will get a full scholarship to many colleges. From there, I think you will have a great life, and won't make your parents mistakes. Believe me, you need to get out of that house. And FAST if you are suicidal.

Good luck,
~Adri

what are good contact lenses to wear while camping for a few days?

Mike

i wear Acuvue Oasys Hydroclear, take them out every night. i'm looking for lenses you can keep in all night, cause i will be going into the backcountry, for a few days, and it will be difficult to keep changing them. so, the less i have to take them out, put some in the better.

Answer
I know several people who wear daily-wear contacts such as yours for weeks, even months at a time and say they have no problems. I guess my protein/fat levels in my tears are too high, because if I wear mine for more than a day or two they get all sticky and won't sit still on my eyes.

There are extended-wear contacts that are supposed to be designed to be worn for several days. But I recall that several years ago this was determined to be a scam for manufacturers to charge more for the same lenses.

Nevertheless, this is your eyes we're talking about, and if you mess them up you're in trouble. Go to your eye doctor and ask about extended wear lenses and see what he/she recommends. Or just call him/her on the phone.

When I backpack I just pop my contacts out when I get to camp and put on my spare set of eyeglasses. The only problem I've ever had is being out of water to wash my hands when I get back to camp. So I carry some Wet-Nap hand wipes to clean-up before taking out the contacts. Then I put on my glasses and go about collecting and filtering/boiling more water.

Where can I purchase straps for my backpack?

James Fisc

I recently purchased a day pack that has those small leather diamonds with the two slits. I would like to buy straps for them because I want to strap down an umbrella. I was hoping someone could give me a product or something like that.
Thank you in advance!

Answer
without knowing where you are its rather difficult to answer but try luggage outlets, camping stores, travel accessory shops, canvas manufacturing shops ( ie horse blanket manufacturers)
Or you could get a couple of double sided velcro straps - they work fine & available in sewing shops, hardware stores etc.

We are planning a trip to disney. Can you bring wheeled backpacks into the park?

Answer
As long as they meet Disney's standard size. You can check out disneyworld.com for more information on the exact size and what is allowed in the bags. Disney also has lockers that you can rent, so you will not have to worry about someone staying with the bag. You will not be able to take the bag on the rides with you, so you will need someone to watch it. If you have small kids then rent a stroller and get a regular bag.

How much money is good for Disney for a week?

Mario

I'm going to Disney for a week and I would like to know what's a good amount to bring. I'm not looking to be going out to restaurants all the time, but making sure I'm comfortable while I'm there. Thank you!

Answer
I like to travel on a budget because you get to do more things. I drove with my family (2 teenagers and myself) from Illinois to Orlando. Which saved me a whole lot on air fair. Car rental was only 128.00 for seven days with all of the coupon codes I entered for rental. I was able to get a deal with the parks. We did SeaWorld and BushGardens 2 day pack. I think it was 253.00 or something like that online for all 3 of us. I didn't stay on the Disney resorts. Stayed at a very nice LaQuinta inn that included 2 doubles and a sofa sleeper and breakfast everyday right on International drive within walking distance of all the action. I used a discount code for this one too. Hotel was about 50.00 a night. Had a fridge in the room and microwave so I stocked up on lots of goodies and sandwich meats and microwavable from the grocery store across the street from us. As a treat we went to Golden Corral to eat dinner for 3 nights and BW3. I made sure we at a large breakfast and made little quick lunches before we left for the parks, fruits, veggies, cheese things like that. We did buy things in the park like ice cream couple of stuffed animals but didn't go overboard. I had extra money to do fun stuff outside of the parks like swamp tours and things. total i spent about 1500 bucks. We travel a lot and I am able to do it because I prepare ahead of time and compare prices and use lots and lots of discount codes, lol. If you are taking smaller kids take a trip to the Disney store in your area to buy things they may need in the park like the autograph books and backpacks, I did that the first time around when my girls were younger we went to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. The items are much cheaper at the Disney store in your area.

camping in PA, where can we go roughing it?

backpack camping in west virginia image

So a few friends and I are planning a camping trip in the first week of August. We live in western PA, so we're looking for places towards the middle of the state, and the far right side of Ohio. The whole point of the question is that we don't want any old campground. We want to be somewhere that is in deep woods, not next door to some family in a pop up. Basically a place that will let us "rough it" with lots of tent sites. Any good suggestions?

Answer
The only way you will find quiet deep woods camping in PA in the summer is if you are willing to hike at least a few miles into the forest. Anyplace you can drive up to will be occupied by others. So a place with "lots of tent sites" may be problematic if you are looking for solitude.

That said, there are many places in the Allegheny National Forest to your north and in Monongahela National Forest in WV, to your south. Both are about a 4 hour drive from Pittsburgh. The West Virginia mountains will tend to be more rugged and less populated. Due to increased logging and gas well development in the Allegheny Forest it is getting harder to find your way away from people and roads.

I've backpacked and camped extensively in both areas. As the previous answer mentioned, the PA department of Natural Resources has excellent state maps and guides on line to all the camping areas in the state. Some of the more spectacular and remote areas in WV are Cranberry Backcountry, Dolly Sods, Otter Creek and Spruce Knob and you can find info on line from the state of WV on those.

Even closer to Pittsburgh, there are nice campsites along the Laurel Highlands Trail that runs roughly north-south 50 miles to the east. And the John P. Saylor Trail near Johnstown has several loop trails with great campsite areas for multiple tents. Go on line and check the reservation requirements for any place you are headed to make sure you comply with location restrictions and that areas are not already overbooked. There are published guides to both National Forests available in outfitter shops and book stores. I recommend taking a book -- easier access than on on-line when you're beyond "civilization".

The closest really deep roadless wilderness is the Adirondacks in upstate NY.

Any remote or hike-in camping sites in Ohio?

KSJ

Hello, does anyone know of very primitive camp sites in Ohio? Preferably on the east side but it's not that important. I was really interested in Hocking Hills but I want a camp site that is away from people and very secluded, not your typical camping where your car is right there next to you at the site. Something where I could hike in would be great. Does this exist in Ohio?! Or if you know of any places in southern Michigan or western Pennsylvania that would be great too. Thanks!

Answer
Both southern Michigan (where I used to live) and the entire state of Ohio are just too densely populated to have any "deep" wilderness area. Flat land like that all was sold off, settled and farmed in the first couple of centuries of the European immigration to North America. However, due to there being more mountainous areas in Pennsylvania, you can find some hike-in wilderness camping areas, particularly in the Allegheny National Forest in northwest to central PA. A few I have backpacked into are Minister Creek and the North Country Trail. Check out the Pennsylvania DCNR website for detailed information on trails and wilderness areas throughout the state.

Also, eastern West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest has some terrific backcountry areas like Otter Creek, Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods and Cranberry Backcountry. I've done multi-day backpack trips in all those areas. It really is some amazing country there, some of it reminds me of Switzerland.

Basically, if you want deep wilderness it has to be in areas that are not easy to set up farms or cities, in other words, steep terrain or deserts or areas with harsh weather.

I'll start:

disposable razor, electrical wiring, crunched christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, TV remote

and I'd like to say "baby gate doorknob" except I didn't catch him eating it, until he pooped it out whole, after a trip to the vet.

it is amazing - you think you have completely cleared and puppy-proofed an area, and they seem to pull stuff out of thin air!
WOW. This has been enlightening, amusing, and in alot of cases, gross.

Thanks for sharing!

Answer
This particular over sized Boxer mix came out of a drug house in a big city. There was suspicion she had been used as a "test subject" for street drugs. She for sure had ISSUES, a few bolts loose and was a rampant chewer.

Her menu over her lifetime was:

A $100 Scientific Calculator (copped from a backpack)
Jewelry - anything she could steal off my dresser
Rare plant bulbs
A thermometer (that she found in a new house I just moved into - cause I didn't own one)
A 12' tree...chewed off at ground level
Her own poop
Money - paper or coin (anything she could reach on the table, or counter top.
Cat, dog, raccoon, cow and bird poop
Human poop (camping once.. I thought I was gonna die)
Multiple hoses
Parts of a broken light bulb
A "floater" she fished out of the kid's john
A USED feminine napkin *gasp*she snagged out of the weeds (on the side of the road) while on a walk...
My dad's cherished barrel cactus.
My grandson's plastic alligator
Bumble Bees / yellow jackets/ honey bees
Quail

BUT... WHAT ALMOST KILLED HER (besides ME)... was
A 2"x2" redwood rung off my deck railing. She chewed it out one summer day so she could poke her head out of the railing and watching me pull into the driveway. She was in the vets for almost a week being treated for that stunt. She lived...but just barely.

Oddly...she's now pushing 11 yrs old and sleeping on the rug right behind my computer chair. I didn't dare rehome her.. I was afraid someone would take her out and SHOOT HER. It wasn't her fault her brain was fried. Now...she's allllllll gray faced and moves with a hitch in her git-a-long. She still occasionally steals a grocery receipt if she can snag it...but it's more for attention then anything else...LOL *knock on wood*... she has not ruined anything of value in a long time.
.
.ADDED:
You guys mentioning furniture disasters -
A friend of mine went and got an adolescent, very rambunctious Boxer and for what ever BRAIN FART REASON...she left him home alone (.l-o-o-s-e in her house) about a week after she got him. When she got back he had pulled the cushions off her n-e-w couch! Starting on the front...he chewed a whole clear out the BACK of the couch! She called me for sympathy and all I could do was laugh until I cried......rotffffffffffff. Duh x 100...lol What WAS she thinking?

How should women best prepare to go backcountry camping?

Mark J

My girlfriend is interested in going camping with me, but is afraid of being unprepared for uniquely female problems such as bathroom usage, et. al. Any advice from female campers?

Answer
I'm not a female, but I've introduced a few ladies backpacking over the years. It may seem scary at first, but armed with a few items using the backcountry "facilities" isn't that big of a deal. I don't know if lack of privacy, fear of animal attack, fear of "dirty" environment, or fear of messing themselves is their issue, but all can be addressed.

Provide her with a proper toilet trowel such as this one: http://www.rei.com/product/407146, a roll of toilet paper, a small package of baby wipes, and a small bottle of Purell hand cleaner.

Instruct her to dig a hole at least 8 inches deep, squat down, do her business, and bury the waste. This should take place a couple hundred yards from any water source.

Some women will attempt to hold it for long periods and you might want to suggest a good private spot for her to "go" every few hours if she doesn't seem to be doing it on her own, while you "stand guard".

You might have to explain that hiking requires a constant input and output of food/water and waste and if she's not doing that she's going to make herself sick. I'm not saying all women are like this, but a couple of the ones I've known...

Toilet paper, wipes, and other feminine hygiene products should be carried out of the backcountry in some sort of plastic bag, preferably and Odor Proof Sak http://www.rei.com/product/758706 If you bury them, it's likely that animals may dig them up and scatter them around.

Carrying air rifles while on the Appalachian trail?

backpack camping north carolina
on of visitors came for hiking and backpacking
backpack camping north carolina image

Lewis

A friend and I are looking to do a 7 day trip of the Appalachian trail; we are starting in Georgia and just seeing how far we can go. We would like to carry air rifles as they are far quieter than proper firearms, they provide some protection from bears or other dangerous wildlife(only a deterrent) and also a little hunting with small game. My main question is are there any laws that prohibit us from doing so in Georgia, Tennessee and maybe North Carolina? As well national, state parks?

Answer
If you are concerned about bears, take bear spray. Here is what the Appalachian Trail Conservancy says about guns and hunting. To summarize, it isn't a good idea and requires permits in different jurisdictions where it is allowed.

IS HUNTING PERMITTED ON THE A.T.?
Hunting is allowedâas long as the hunter observes state laws and regulationsâalong more than half of the Appalachian Trail's length, including some part of all fourteen Trail states. During hunting season, make sure you can be seen and heard. Wear a blaze-orange cap and vest and/or backpack cover at all times, including in and around camp.

CAN I CARRY A GUN?
ATC strongly discourages hikers from carrying firearms: Most experienced A.T. hikers consider them impractical and unnecessary, and encountering an armed stranger makes many people uncomfortable. To legally carry a firearm on the Trail, you must meet the permitting standards of the state and locality in which you are hiking. On national-park lands, discharging a firearm is illegal, even if you have a legal permit to carry it. Extra efforts may be required to secure weapons in towns to abide by local ordinances and private-property owners' rules. (Firearm rules vary by land ownership. The Trail crosses 14 states and more than 90 state, federal, or local agency lands, with each having its own rules and regulations; you are responsible for knowing and following those rules.) In areas of the Trail corridor where hunting is legal, hikers may see hunters carrying firearms. Hunters must abide by their own set of firearm rules, somewhat separate from firearm-carry rules but also varying by state and county.

How should I hike the Appalatchain trail?

Ll cool j

Me and my dad want to go on a three day hike on the Appalachian Trail. We need to know a list to bring, where we go to start the trail and if we can set up camp any where on the trail or if there are camp sites. Also if we can make a fire to cook our food. One last detail we live in Georgia.

Answer
Use a trail finder to pick the best part of the APT. As long as your on public lands you can camp anywhere you want as long as it is permitted. http://www.localhikes.com/

Stay away from the shelters and people you meet on the trail there is a norovirus going around and it's spreading like a wildfire amongst the APT hikers. Use sterile wipes on the pit toilets and don't touch anything in them.
http://internetbrothers.org/2013/04/08/norovirus-on-at-in-north-carolina/

Campfires may be restricted due to fire danger you will have to get a fire permit from the forest rangers office in the district you pick to hike in. Because of that in order to cook food you will need a backpackers stove

im new to backpacking and i am going to start buying my own gear. Now i was wondering what a good size for a kind of do-all pack would be, i was thinking somewhere along the lines of 65L. i am 17 and 6'4 i want a big pack that has a lot of space for all my gear (fyi i pack heavy soo i need a durable backpack). i am currently using a 65L is that too big too small or what.

also what are some good companies with durable backpacks for under like 350?

Answer
4,000 - 5,000 Cubic Inches - Good for up to 3 days of overnight camping.

You want to choose a pack well suited to your individual dimensions. You need to customize it to your body shape.

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. Here's how to measure yours:

* You will need the help of another person to do this. Have that person locate the bony bump at the base of your neck, where the slope of your shoulder meets your neck.
* Next, locate the top of your hipbones. Place your hand on your hips and feel where your pelvis protrude from each side. This is where your packs hipbelt grips on to. A properly positioned hipbelt will straddle your iliac crest, about an inch above and below that line.
* Start at the spot you found on the top of your spine and measure down the spine down to a point on your spine even with the top of your hip bones.
This distance is your torso length.

Generally, your measurement will fall into one of these frame-size categories:

Small: Up to 17 1/2".
Medium/Regular: 18" to 19 1/2".
Large/Tall: 20" and up.

If you fall in between two sizes it is a good idea to go to a local store and try on different packs to see which is the best fit for you.

You want to choose between an internal and external frame.

Multiday Packs

These are generally suitable for trips covering 2 to 4 days (and thus 1 to 3 nights of backcountry camping) in mild to moderate 3-season conditions.

Packs ranging from 40 to 75 liters for men are appropriate for such trips; the right size depends on the gear needs (and gear-toting savvy) of each individual. The more days you're out, the more capacity you typically need.

A multiday pack is also usually the preferred choice for:

* Single-day or overnight backcountry ski trips.
* Overnight summit approaches.

If you routinely hike in the Sierras or other backcountry areas where portable bear canisters are required for food storage, test-fit a canister in your pack. For packs in the multiday category, you may need to upsize your initial liter count in order to accommodate a canister in addition to your other gear. You may need a 65-liter pack or larger for carrying a canister.

Internal frames dominate in new gear: Body-hugging internal-frame designs have made traditional external-frame models nearly obsolete. The appeal of internal frames lies in their ability to keep loads stable and walkers balanced on unpredictable terrain. Their narrow profiles also allow arms to swing freely and minimize pack-snag when you're pushing through brush. External-frame packs, very good at transporting heavy loads on trails, still exist, but in small numbers.

Think in liters: Most backpacks (even daypacks) have a number embedded in their namesâthe Gregory Z55, for example, or the REI Flash 65. The number identifies the pack's carrying capacity (aka volume) in liters. Because they are brief and easy to recall, liters have supplanted cubic inches as the standard unit for gauging backpack capacity.

Lower weight: Weight-reductionâboth in packs and the gear they carryâhas been a game-changing trend in gear design. So consider your existing gear assortment when researching packs. Does your backpacking gear predate the engineering advances made in the "Lightweight Movement" of the late 1990s and 2000s? If so, the bulk of these older items can fill up modern backpacks pretty quickly. In that situation our advice is:

* Upsize your liter count: If you're toting bulkier items from decades past, you'll likely need a pack with ample capacity.
* Revamp your gear: We know, we knowâthis tip may sound like a self-serving strategy from a cagey retailer just trying to sell you more stuff. But if you're a pretty serious backpacker, and one fondly attached to some vintage gear, consider assembling an alternative gear setup built around lightweight gear. Most people who do are pleased with the results, particularly for weekend trips.

There are a large number of choices for good equipment.

Back to school bag help?

Q. Hey you guys!
I start dance camp every weekday from 9am-4pm & them right after I have band camp which is from 5pm-9:30 pm :( so yeah, I except to be very tired at the end of the day lol & I'm gonna sleep on Saturdays & & put off one Sunday for school clothes shopping. So yeah, the nearest big city is like 2 hrs away & its like a day trip there to go & I'm lazy haha so if you can please find me a back to school bag that can be bought online, that'd be awesome!

My fav colors are red, purple & turquise & I love glitter &vintage hollywood, locks & keys, rock and roll like stuff, like red & black plaid, guitars, studs etc. i'm not a big fan of animal print, i'd love like a London, NYC, or Hollywood theamed bag too. I prefer over the shoulder, but backpacks would be cool too if they're cute.

I got this one in the flower pattern, and it's SOO cute! The picture definitely does NOT do it justice! This isn't gonna be good for anything heavy-duty, but it's not as tiny as it looks here. Not as big as a full backpack, but it's bigger than a purse.
Trust me, you'll love it! :)

I guess my question is really this: What are B.S.A regulations on firearm transportation?

Answer
If you mean Boy Scouts of America, only adults can handle or transport firearms in compliance to state and national firearms transportation laws. All fire arms must be checked in to the rangemaster at any BSA summer camps, and except for law enforcement officers required to carry firearms within their jurisdiction, firearms shall not be brought on camping, hiking, backpacking, or other Scouting activities except those specifically planned for target shooting under the supervision of a currently certified BSA or National Rifle Association firearms instructor.

What are some tips for starting middle school?

Lai

Im a gurl and im ll and i need tips

Answer
Self confidence! That's what you need. When you start middle school make sure to start talking to people. Make a good impression, smile, ask for their names, and do small talk. Nice to say their name after a conversation such as before you leave "it was nice talking to you Anna, bye" then smile. Remember don't talk bad about yourself, and don't talk too much about yourself. Let them talk too and be a good listener. Really I can't stress it, try not to be shy.

Once you start talking to those people that you like, stick with them for lunch and look for them in the morning before school starts to hang out. Always hang out with at least one person and make sure to go form a bigger group. Don't be alone or people can start picking on you.

When making friends, give them eye contact and show them you have confidence. Look them in the eyes but don't stare. Also never look down at the ground or your shoes most likely people will start to look down on you. Remember people love nice and friendly people. Just talk.

Also!
Clothing wise: Main stores to go to----> Old Navy! (Uniforms) and Tilly's. Check google for their the store location nearest you.

Wear nice clothing. Get your mom or parents to buy you clothing for middle school. It's called investment, you know. Okay buy 2-3 white shirts that fits you perfectly and fits your body not the kind of material shirt that the boys wear. Also get 2-3 cardigans and jackets, you can look around H&M, Forever 21, Gap, Walmart, Target...and at least two pairs of Dickie pants, make sure you get that. 2-3 pairs of good-looking shoes such as the brands converse chucks, or vans. Get a nice backpack maybe a jansport. Almost forgot, for PE you need PE shoes try Nike or Adidas brand.

Hygiene
Make sure to shampoo and conditioner your hair very nicely. If you don't have a hair straightener, get your mom to buy you one and have her straighten your hair everyday or every other day.
Don't be cheap.
VERY IMPORTANT Sunscreen that is one of your best friends. You must apply that everyday diligently. It protects you from the sun's harmful uv rays that can turn you older faster. The sun can make you have wrinkles all over your face and you can get dark sun spots, patches of dark that can make your body, skin, face uneven. Ah....it can also cause cancer, bad for your health. Make sure to have it on handy and put it in your PE locker as well.

Body lotion: it keeps your skin moisturized and feeling soft.
Chapstick: Get one of these even better if it has spf, you want to protect your lips as well.

Do you wear a bra? If not you can get your mom to bring you to a bra or lingerie store and have a female store representative, fit your size. Don't attempt it yourself or wear your mother's bra, it can change the shape of your bust, and that's not going to be pretty.

Ultimately, be yourself, you're on the period where you're growing, and your parents need to meet most of your needs. You're a healthy growing girl you know.

Ah...it also may be good to get along with teachers, do your homework, and maybe even join a sport or physical activity like swimming well if the school provides those programs and classes for you.

*If your mom won't do these things for you, go straight to your dad immediately for help and plead with him.*

I wished someone had told me these things earlier. Now I'm in college, but I survived.

You must take control over your life, you have bigger responsibilites now. Make this middle school time the best time you can ever have where after you graduate from middle school, you can tell others about your happy memories then and not regret. Because you are young and you should have the best. Best wishes and congratulations for your move up to Middle School!

Holly

Hi, can anyone advise me on any particular features to look for when choosing a backpack / rucksack. I won't be carrying camping stuff / bedding. Will probably be in hot and cold parts of Asia.

Thank you!

Answer
Make sure the backpack is water-proof and well insulated. It is really important that it has a pocket for a water bottle. Make sure the straps have some padding if you are going to be carrying it around a fair amount.

*And as an added tip for the contents, make sure you always carry a role of toilet paper and a bottle of Purel with you wherever you go.

Asia is amazing! Have fun :)

How to prepare for a long distance camping trip?

I have camped all my life but they have always been in driving distance so I pack up the car and off I go. I am flying from Boston to CA for a 4 day camping trip and am unsure about packing for a plane ride. The backpack I plan on bringing is peobably too big for carry on, but I don't trust it checked. What do you suggest? Carry on my sleeping bag and pillow and check the pack? Maybe?

Thanks!

Answer
I would pack my backpack as I would for the camping trip. And then but a big cheap duffel bag. (I got a huge hockey gear sized one at a local chain store for cheap.) Put your whole ready to go pack in it and zip it up. The duffel protects the pack and all the straps, and can be folded down small and stowed away while your camping. Until the flight home.
Some packs have a small removable pouch or pocket that can be used as a carry on.
