my friends and I are looking to go tent camping at the DWG and we were wondering if you were allowed to just set up a tent close to the water without paying for like an actual camping site?

Answer
There are two campsites within the DNWG - Dingmans on the PA side and Worthington State Forest on the NJ side.

Dingman's has sites along the river (though the majority are inland a bit). Fee is $37/night riverfront, $35/night forest. http://www.dingmanscampground.com/Camping.aspx

Worthington State Forest also has riverfront and inland campsites. Fee is $35/night any spot. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/worthington.html

The Appalachian Trail cuts through DNWG. Thru-hikers who are hiking at least two days can camp within 100-feet of the trail anyplace it cuts through DNWG without fees or permits. You may only stay one night per location. Read the DNWG hiking bulletin for details: http://www.nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/upload/sb2AT.pdf. Also helpful info on the AT Conservancy site: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.mqLTIYOwGlF/b.4805493/k.749B/Regulations_and_Permits.htm.

Hiking will involve planning a route, start and end points, projected camping locations for each of two nights, then informing a family member or friend of your plans and arranging either pick-up or drop-off or both (unless you plan to do a round-trip). You'll need to backpack your own food, shelter, equipment and clothing (there are no shelters on the A-T in DNWG). No ground fires are permitted so you'll need to bring stoves and fuel. Drinking water would be available at the two above mentioned campgrounds, otherwise bring filters or chemical treatment, or plan on boiling water.

Hope this helps.

any ideas for the night?
