Answer
It's usually Cold there and Foggy at times. There are really Fun places to go there. And there are Stores that you can buy good Ube (Purple Yam) and other Baguio Delicacies and Souvenires.
The People are nice and Welcoming. The area is really really nice. Because it's a lot cleaner than most Cities in the Philippines and it's Cold there. But not that cold.

Good Backpacking in Big Sur?

I'm planning on going backpacking in the Big Sur area (I believe its part of Monterrey county).
Has anyone else been backpacking (overnight camping on trails) in the Big Sur area?
Can you recommend a certain State/National Park? We would prefer a place that is in the forest with all the dense trees (eg the redwoods).

Thank you.

Answer
Contact the National Forest Service Office at Big Sur. There is a trail head just past their parking lot that takes you into the Ventana Wilderness, a permit may be required. The first campsites are 4 miles in, then at 6 miles, 8 miles, and 12 miles. At 12 miles there is Sykes Hot Springs, a mild sulfur spring right alongside the Big Sur River, that provides a relaxing soak after the hike. The springs are about 1/4 mile downstream from where the trail crosses the river.

Went in there for the first time in 1972, many times since, was back a few years ago.

Im going backpacking for 3-6 days in northern california. Do you know of good places with natural hot springs?

Im just looking for a place to reasearch. if you know of any really beautiful places too that would be appreciated.

Answer

Also Big Sur is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, it is near Monterrey south of San Francisco. My girl and our baby sort of "hippied" there in the 70's. It was a haapy time. Very pretty area.

Answer
WOW hun im sorry but unless your paris hilton, uh i dont think youll be needin ALL OF THAT. lets be reasonable here. Do you really need a pair of jeans that cost 180$?? i mean cmon even if you do have that kind of money whats the point in blowing it all just for one season? Try to find a couple of deals. The amount of clothing is cool but the prices are not! Some people in the world probably havent spent that much money on thier family, let alone themselves. Maybey save some 50$ to send out to a back to school charity that helps some kids get a backpack and supplies, or maybey for some kids that have never had an education, instead of letting the money be wasted on some spoiled girl that wants to spend a whopping 1.5 grand on her back to school shopping spree.

Question for Students in America?

Yennie

Hi, i go to a high school in Australia, and here, regardless of if you go to a public or private schooling facility, you are still required to wear school uniform.

I was just wondering..what is it like being able to wear your own clothes? Are there rules? If so, that are they? Are you allowed to wear makeup. jewelery etc? What are the rules to that?
I want to know all about it.. any additional info would be cool too :))

Thankyou so much! :)))

Answer
I go to a public Early College High School, (Half college, half high school) and they're not as restricting as most public high schools like the more common ones in America.

At my school: You can wear piercings, like a lip and gauges in your ears, or earrings (both girls and boys can),
but most public schools restrict the boys of facial piercings, and limit them to only one ear pierced.

You may also wear pretty graphic shirts unless they are way too gore-y or are advertising drugs, smoking, alcohol or cussing, nudity, etc.
You cannot wear mesh shirts without an undershirt to cover, you may(at my school) wear spaghetti strap. If you wear a strapless shirt you have to have an overthrow of some type.

You can't wear ripped jeans any higher than your knee, or short skirts/shorts.
Although most schools don't allow this, my school allows you to wear basketball shorts at anytime.

ALL public schools in my area require you to have clear or mesh backpacks due to drugs/weapons, except at my school we let you have any backpack, and recommend one that isn't mesh because sometimes we have to walk outside to college classes far away in rain.

Yes you are allowed to wear makeup, it's your style so you can wear as much as you want, sometimes they restrict guys who are into that stuff here, but others they don't mind. At mine they don't mind.

Jewerly: their are some rules, you can wear as much as you want (at least at my school) except for spikes, or something that will be a threat to other students or safety.

You may also wear any shoes you desire too. :)

Hope this helps. <3

im going in2 middle school in the fall.i want 2 personalize my backpack, locker, lunchbox, stuff like that.but i dont have a lot of money, so keep it cheap. thnx :D

Answer
For your locker you could line it with some wrapping paper, that's what kids at my school did. And you could put multi-colored safety pins on your lunch box and back pack, me and my friends did that with our jeans and shirts, haha.

L.L. Bean backpacks, are they as good as they claim?

Bre Dennis

I received my Original L.L. Bean backpack today, and looking at it I love it. Its personalized and is my favorite color. I have looked at reviews and it says that it is good for elementary kids. It looks like it has a lot of room and is just fine for a high school student. What is your opinion on this backpack? I didnt want a Deluxe because those are too big in my opinion.

Answer
I got one when I was in middle school. It's been used forever. I still have it and use it for packing my kids stuff on outings or when we go on vacations and I'm pushing 40 so it's been around for a long time.

Unless they don't make them as tough as they used to, it should last you a long time.

Inclusion in Special Education? Im writing a position paper on Inclusion. I do agree on inclusion in general ed, so now I have to write a position paper on it. How should I start? Should I start by identifying inclusion?

Answer
It might be a more interesting introduction if you describe a full inclusion student's experience (changing his or her name and some of the details, for the sake of confidentiality.) Then talk about the options available for students with special needs, and how this student is benefiting from inclusion.

For example, "John goes into his kindergarten class wearing his new yellow raincoat and a big smile. His classmates greet him with high fives and hugs. John puts his backpack and raincoat away and goes to join a group of boys who are building with blocks" etc. etc. "When the class begins working in their centers, John's one-to-one assistant sits by him to modify the tasks, giving John the support he needs to succeed" etc. etc. Then you talk about how John is an inclusion kid, define inclusion, list other special education options, what the benefits of inclusion are, etc.

What are good birthday gifts for 4 year old twins (one boy one girl)?

modbride

They are 2 of 5 kids so I want to get them something good but something that won't cause too much clutter.

Answer
Here are some ideas:

* arts and crafts items - play doh with tools, Color Wonder markers (no mess!) and coloring books, sticker books
* backpacks - they'll need them for when they go to Kindergarten. Get nice sturdy ones that can hold normal size binders.
* Puzzles - go for any of the Nick Jr. themed puzzle boxes in the stores.
* Gift certificates for shoes - Payless or Stride Rite would be great places to get a gift certificate. No matter how many kids you have, each one needs new shoes.

Books are a decent idea for any child, but with so many kids in the family, I'd suspect they'd just get lost in the shuffle.

Answer
Little, important stuff: Be prepared for bugs, sun, rain, cold, and heat. Not so much for you, you can just suck it up, but for the 4 month old.

You're right at the cusp between a Baby Bjorn front carrier and a child carrier backpack (Kelty is good, REI has them). Depends a little on your own child's neck strength. We've done both. 2 months through Europe with 2-3 month old in a Baby Bjorn (great for public transit) and BP trips in CA, AK, and HI with him in a Kelty child carrier backpack when he was 6 to 24 months.

2 to 4 years old was a time for closer stuff - more camping, less BPing. By 5, he could do 3 miles in a morning OR an afternoon and then we'd make camp.

In some ways, it is as easy as it will get for the next 5 years. Mom has everything the baby wants, baby has a semi-regular sleep schedule now, but stays where you put him/her. We've got a friend who followed her husband on the fricking Iditarod Sled Dog race (1100 miles) with a little one like that so it can be done.

Note that if you are carrying baby, someone else needs to carry all the baby STUFF. And your stuff. And their own stuff. That gets to be a lot of stuff. Sometimes I (dad) make two trips to haul it in (I get a peaceful round trip as a sherpa). Or we book a remote cabin (in AK or HI) with beds, stove, pots, roof, wood stove already there. It cuts your weight a lot and lets you do it in one trip. As does going during mild weather - you pack less clothes for everyone.

Just accept that the grownups will wear the same outer clothes everyday and the baby's outfit is just fine if there's drool on it. It's a BP trip, not a fashion show.

Attitude: While on a road trip or a BPing trip or riding in a pressurized metal tube at 31,000 feet I try to think of a pioneer family taking 6 months to cross the plains in a covered wagon. Hard tack, salt pork and bad water every day. Hot and dry or too cold all the time. One kid was born on the way, one died. Makes $5 for a hot meal and another $5 for a cold beer from the stewardess seem like a bargain. Or Mac&Cheese (4 years from now on a family BP trip) seem not so bad.

As others have said, don't get too ambitious - you'll do a lot less distance than you did on adult-only trips. Keep it simple, keep it fun, test and fine-tune the concept slowly. At 3 to 6 months, we found we could do most anything (hike the Black Forest, the Louvre, a glacier hike, subways, etc) for 2.5 hours. And then get somewhere comfortable (cafe, mountain hut, tent) for another nursing session and a diaper change.

Remember - the spectacular destinations are for your sake, not theirs until they're 5 or so. They'd be just as happy with the sticks and rocks in your backyard as at 10,000 feet in the mountains. Or on a playground in any city.

And accept that it will be more of a test of your flexibility as a parent than as a stud-muffin hiker. Modelling an active, adventurous lifestyle is important to us (trying to combat the TV/supersize me culture) and we are starting to see the fruits of that now.

Suggestions for a baby/toddler backpack?

Silly Momm

My husband and I are planning on doing some camping/backpacking once the weather warms up (it's still snowing where we live and we're beginning to wonder what Spring is) and we are in need of a baby/toddler backpack. My son is 10 months old and weighs in at a nice, healthy 35 pounds so an INFANT carrier is out of the question. He is much to heavy for those. I am referring to the ones with a large frame that carry ~50 pounds or more. I have no idea what names are good and reliable and research I've done hasn't turned up very good answers. Anyone with a suggestion, please let me hear it! Thanks!

Answer
We have a Kelty Kids backpack. It is wonderful. It is quite comfortable to wear, easy to put on and my son loves being in it (he's 14 months and around 25-30lbs). We camp and it is a lifesaver --- we bought it to use in place of our Ergo carrier on long hikes/camping.

It is like this one:
http://www.kelty.com/p-283-fc-10.aspx

We managed to find a gently used one on craiglist for about half of the new price.

What rights do minors have in High School?

best youth backpack reviews

Answer
Not sure if it applies to all schools .. but I took this from a schools website.

Rights at School

You have the right to attend school until you graduate from high school, receive a GED, or turn 21. If you are under 16, you must attend school through the end of the year in which you turn 16 (e.g., If you turn 16 in July, you must attend school through the end of the following June). You have the right to a free, appropriate public education. You have the right to know the rules of the school or educational facility that you attend in advance of being held accountable to those rules.

Any personal property you bring on to school grounds is considered school property for the time it is on school grounds. It is therefore subject to search by school authorities or the police without a warrant. This includes not only bags, backpacks, and locker contents but also personal vehicles and their contents.

Counseling is available at school to any student who needs it. You may speak either to your guidance office, the school social worker, or the school psychologist.

Homeless students are not just young people who live on the streets or in shelters; they are also those who have no âfixed regular nighttime residence,â which includes couch-surfing students and, sometimes, students dealing with shifting parental custody arrangements. If you are homeless or you are living in a youth shelter or transitional program, you have the right to attend the school where you last enrolled (as long as it is within a reasonable distance) or the school in the area where you are temporarily living, even if you are moving from place to place. (This applies even if you are moving from one parentâs house to anotherâs and even if you are moving to the home of the parent who is technically the non-custodial parent.) The new school must enroll you immediately; you do not need any documents or school records. If the school does not believe you are entitled to be enrolled, you must be provided with a written statement of ineligibility. They must give you the opportunity to appeal their decision and must allow you to stay in school while the State Education Department reviews your appeal. There is a person with the title of âhomeless liaisonâ in every school district that can help you with this process.

You also have the right to safety at schoolâthe right to be free from harassment or bullying. Schools are required by law to provide a safe learning environment in which all students can participate freely and equally. Intimidation, bullying, and sexual harassment make schools a hostile environment, and school staff must respond to student complaints.

Sexual harassment is unwanted sexual attention. It can be directed at girls or boys. It can be physical, verbal, or even non-verbal communication. Students are also protected from harassment due to sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation. The most important aspect of harassment is how the gestures make you feel. âGoodâ sexual attention makes you feel happy, excited, proud, maybe even nervous in a good way. Itâs like flirting. On the other hand, sexual harassment leaves you feeling scared, anxious, ashamed, and unhappy. If you have asked someone to stop doing the things that bother you, and he or she continues, you can ask for help from a school counselor, teacher, or administrator. The sexual harassment policy in most student handbooks explains what the school must do to help.

You have the right to comprehensive guidance about your future from your school guidance office, which arranges counseling on course selection, career interest exploration, and college matters.

Students with disabilities are covered under Parts 200 and 201 of the Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education. All students, including those with disabilities, have the right to a âfree, appropriate public education.â If a student feels that he or she has a disability requiring that he or she be given a special education designation, a referral letter must be hand-delivered to the committee on special education chairperson in the studentâs school district. (The letter may be written by a parent or by a doctor or other professional.) The district must conduct evaluations and meet with the studentâs parents or guardians within 60 school days of the delivery of the letter. The studentâs parents or guardians must sign their consent to these evaluations. Students with special education designations have the right to attend regular classes based on their ability.

-Portugal Lisboa

- Belgium Brussel
- Netherlands Amsterdam
- France Paris
- UK London

Ill probably be visiting more cities its that these are the only ones i know are the most famous

Oh and what method of transportation would be best cause i dont want to be paying too much for airplanes

Answer
First off I'd recommend going to a library/bookstore and looking through some Europe travel guides to get a sense of what you might want to do.

Some general recommendations:

Start off by flying into London--it's a fascinating city with lots to do, they speak English obviously so it's a good first destination if you haven't traveled abroad before, and it's a major transportation hub, so it's easy to find flights. I would spend at least five days, then take a train to Paris and spend another five days there. Thereafter...it pretty much depends on what you're into. Personally I really enjoy Italy--it has a great mix of culture and scenic beauty. In addition to the cities you list, make sure to visit Naples/Pompeii/the Amalfi Coast. The Cinque Terre and the South of France are also really, really pleasant, as is Barcelona, which has a lot of really interesting architecture (I haven't been to Madrid or Lisbon). The Interlaken region of Switzerland also has spectacular alpine scenery. I'd also give thumbs up to Amsterdam and Berlin as cool places to visit. Also I've never been but my parents really loved Norway.

I will say that I did go to Greece, but found that getting there (via an overnight ferry from Italy) and getting around on a Eurrail pass was maybe more of a hassle than it was worth. Brussels also generally doesn't get great reviews, but nearby Bruges is interesting.

Look into getting a Eurrail pass, but don't automatically buy it--they're expensive, and come with restrictions, so in some cases they aren't worth the hassle. In general trains are preferable for short or medium trips, though for covering long distances you might want to look into airline flights. Also be wary of Ryanair and Easyjet--they advertise cheap prices but charge a fortune for luggage and fly to airports in the middle of nowhere that are a pain/expensive to get to/from.

In general I'd also advise against trying to see all of Europe in one vacation--you'll exhaust yourself and spend way too much time on trains. I can tell you that on a three week backpacking trip around Europe I had exhausted myself by the end and didn't enjoy Amsterdam or Bruges as much as I should have. More time in relatively fewer locations is likely to be more relaxing and maybe more rewarding as well.

Also check out hostelworld.com and/or hostelbookers.com--you can use these sites to book rooms in youth hostels pretty much anywhere. Hostels can save you a ton of money if you're going solo, and are a good way to meet other people.

Hope some of that helps!

A good backpacking destination?

Im only 14 atm and in year 9. But I wanted to go backpacking or hiking somewhere when I finish school. Where is a good destination? I've never really been a camping person and more of an inside, computer guy but I like sport and enjoy sport and all that. And I think I would enjoy backpacking and/or hiking. So I was wondering what are some good destinations?
My idea is to start of small by doing something in my own country (Australia) Like hicking from point A to B to C to D and then a plane trip back home. Or doing the kokoda trail. What do you guys think?

Answer
Yes, you could explore your country, but its going to be expensive and time consuming as your country is too vast. You could try New Zealand.

Europe's the best as its very varied in everything and geographically too, so you can see much more than you would in Australia.

Well, I could recommend you to come here to Singapore, my Country too:0 Its great and you could backpack to Malaysia and South Thailand. I would suggest Singapore, KL, Hat Yai, and Back:)

What should I take with me For a 3 month S.E Asia backpacking trip for the first time?

Sum One

Hello Everyone I will be Backpacking for the first time in my life from May to August.. I am very exited but of course this is my first time so I am kind of nervous and clueless..

What should I pack with me ?
SHould i bring a suit case or just buy one of these Camping back pack?
Laptop or no etc....
How to manage my stuff and all that ...

Thank you. & please.. Helpful insights + advises only.. no jokester please.

Answer
1...A well made safe secure belt bag (money belt) for your passport, travel insurance documents. airline ticket, cash, cards, etc.
Wear at least one layer of clothing over it.
See on here for details and styles, advice etc...see the link on it.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091129114006AAd3zd9 . . .

2..Two ways to travel
a....A 65-70L backpack, well fitted in a proper camping store with well trained staff
It's your back doing the carrying.
b...A suitcase with wheels. OK if you're not doing any walks but backpacks will put up with getting slung around by airport baggage handlers better than suitcases will unless you get a very very good case.
For cheaper ones, expect to find no handle on it sometime when you collect it from the baggage hall.
Handles are good for slinging cases around with......I worked in an airport ten years....I've seen plenty of that.

Two ways to pack.
a...Cram it with goodies, saw the kitchen sink in half for easier packing, take half a house and everything else you might need .
Lug it all around, more and more every week as you buy stuff abroad, and buy another bag to cram stuff in.
Repack at the airport to save $100 excess baggage on the return flight for $50-worth of worn clothes and then you can keep the assorted goodies collected on the way round.
Post stuff home to avoid carrying it for weeks. Post is safe, even from remote regions.
I lived in SE Asia for three years, traveled around, still travel.

b....Go with a shoulder bag or a mostly empty backpack and get stuff there.
Just take some essentials like a change of clothes, some toiletries and washing kit, a copy of Lonely Planet South East Asia, sweets and biscuits for the plane to nibble between on-board meals, camera, maybe a phone, if you have one that works in Asia.
All over the world there are people who go shopping and shops to sell things to them.
Mostly much cheaper than at home all over S.E.Asia .
You can buy ANYTHING.....cheap.
Last trip to Peru and Chile I took a shoulder bag and came back loaded with local goodies and crafts in an 80l pack with no extra baggage to pay.
Not the first time I've done that.
Go empty, come back full

No laptop. Too want-able by others and just more weight to carry around.
All the backpacker hostels have internet so you can book the next hostel, local airline tickets etc, email home.
Hostel booking sites...Hostelbookers,Hostelworld,Hostelz.com etc. All are safe and reliable for hostels and budget hotels worldwide.
Example in Cambodia. This one is a motel. Start saving early...it's $6 a night....six US dollars
http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/cambodia/banlung/ . . . . .
http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/cambodia/ . . . . .
Internet cafes can be found even in some remote villages with satellite or TV cable links if they don't have a normal phone line, not just in the towns.
Use them to phone home...around 50c a minute. You'll see the ads outside...cheap international calls.
English is common or a mixture of English and local....PC internet baang...Internet Phong etc
Example in stressed out South Korea which has 20 000 internet cafes.....they're not all so bad, just most of 'em,haha
This'll sum it up for South Korean kids....
http://blog.andthensome.nl/wp-content/images/addicted.jpg . . . . . .
http://www.world66.com/asia/northeastasia/southkorea/internetcafes . . . . .

Don't look rich, don't 'brag' ..don't upset the locals. Be friendly.
When you travel you are an example of your own country. For some people in remote areas you will be the first they see of a real one, not just TV stuff.
It's your chance to shine and help in your own small way for international relations....
In Muslim countries like Malaysia, always dress modestly.....no minis or low tops.
In the hostels there will be people from almost anywhere in the world.
Go shopping together and share the food costs. Help each other in the hostel kitchen and learn from each other for different cooking styles and recipes.
Go out together. Take care of each other...you're all in the same boat, far from home.
You could be a really good locally trained wok expert when you get home.....
Like this...paint the ceiling black first if you try it at home
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x75ei4_cuisine-au-wok-au-thai-village-a-au_travel
You can get some weird combos and highly interesting flavours with a western European African Vietnamese main course and Russian cabbage soup with pickled Cambodian snake cutlets and fresh tomato......
Or just do a lasagne....you'll find all you need for it....
Have a load of fun.....

How do you assemble a backpack and sleeping bag for camping?

backpack camping light

backpack camping light image

Marnie

New at camping and hiking. My 12 year old is in Boy Scouts. He has packed light, but the backpack is still so bulky. We can't use a framed backpack because he will have to crawl through some low areas and push his stuff through the opening. I know there must be an easy way to put it all together. The load has to be light enough for a 12 year old child to carry on a caving expedition. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Answer
I'm 14 and started when I was 12. I live in Alaska, so this may not be what you're looking for, but I'll do my best. First, I always try to bring the smallest and lightest bag that I have that works for the coldest it should get. You can always layer up if you get cold. Also, internal frames are good, except for that you'll need to put most items on the inside from what I've experienced. Go through your pack when you're done packing to make sure that there's nothing that you don't need or is worth its weight. One extra tip- Use some clothes as a pillow, as it keeps them warm when it's cold and doesn't take extra space.

What types of things should I bring for a camping trip for about a week?

Hannah

My friend and I are going on a kind of trip/adventure and I'm not sure what we should bring with us. We are going to be spending 3-5 days in the woods walking for a long period of time and camping out in the woods so we didn't really want to travel heavily since we will be moving around a lot. I know we will need things like water, food, etc but just in case I wanted to know what else we should DEFINITELY bring with us. Things we will definitely need to have once we are out there. Things like extra clothes, things for sleeping arrangements, etc. I just don't want to forget anything important.

Answer
You should have lightweight backpacking equipment if you are going to be moving alot.
Some things to bring-
-Cooking stove
-Water filtration system (especially usefull for longer trips)
-synthetic all in one mess kit
-tent
-sleeping bag
-sleeping mat (a must)
-tarp or large rain fly
-lightweight food such as pasta or dehydrated stews that can be packed in a canister for several meals.
-compas
- topo map
- knive, silverware
-rope
-flash light or mini lantern

Just go to gander mountain or any outdoor store and talk to somewone about useful products, and remember when things are convenient its easier to have fun, and without fun there is no point in even going.

one pack i was looking at is this one- http://www.rei.com/product/795605/deuter-act-lite-65-10-pack
but some of the reviews said it's not very durable.

What should i pack for a ten day trip to europe?

Meg Marie

I'm a teenage girl going on a school trip. I'll be visiting London, Paris, Florence and Rome in early April. I'll be walking alot, and some of the buildings i'll be visiting may have dresscodes. I dont want to overpack, because we'll have to carry our luggage around alot and i want lots of room for souvenirs. Anyways, please give me as detailed a list as you can. Thanks alot :)

Answer
Congrats on your trip...I know you are going to have a ball.
First and foremost, look for a bag that you are comfortable carrying around and practice with it.
You might find that the nicest looking bag is NOT the most comfortable one to carry.
If you are going to have to carry your bag around alot, maybe (if $$ allows it), you might want to consider a hikers backpack. If this does not work for you, look for one of the backpacks with wheels so that you can carry it sometimes and roll it others. Pick a few bags and test them out by walking up and down the street with them. 5 or so minutes with each will give you an IDEA of how comfortable they will be.

As for what to pack once you have found the perfect bag....FIRST AND FOREMOST PACK YOUR ELECTRIC CONVERTER. Your hotel MIGHT have 110 but the standard voltage there is 220 so your things probably will not work without some sort of converter. Even if they do, they will probably need a different type of plug as the sockets are different. Check with your trip coordinator to be sure.

Go online a few days before you leave so that you have an idea of what kinds of tempatures you are going to find when you arrive.

One of the keys to a great trip is packing light. You can do that in several ways but the one that I like the best is to pack things that have many functions. If you have a pair of shorts with multicolors in them, you could wear them twice with different tops. IF you wear those shorts on Monday and Thursday with drastically different color shirts, it is doubtful that anyone will even notice.

A travel bottle of laundry powder (4oz or less) in a CHECKED bag can allow you to wash something in the sink should you run out of clothing and/or if you spill something on your clothing. A good pair of walking shoes is a must for ANY tourist. Try to pack clothing that will match the shoes you have on or the ONE other pair that you have packed. No more than two pairs of shoes in your luggage and ideally you really only need one and possibly a pair of flip flops for the pool.

If you can get away without carrying a purse, get one of those passport/id holders to go around your neck. It will keep your hands free for holding cameras/drinks etc. YOu can tuck this under your shirt if you don't want to stick out....they are harder to lose since you don't have to worry about putting it down~

***
Be sure to pack a small bag of sanitary supplies if you are traveling CLOSE to the time of the visit from your monthly friend. The worst thing in the world would be trying to find something like that RIGHT when you need it in another country. If you already wear tampons, consider a compact version of the ones you already use. OB's fit nicely inside of pockets and are very effective. If you wear pads, the slim or thin versions should be explored NOW!

****

You are going to be on a plane for a LONG time. Try to think of how you are going to amuse yourself. Even if you have an ipod, you might want to bring a book in case the batteries die before your flight ends. A light sweatshirt and a pair of comfy socks would be a nice addition to your carryon bag as sometimes flights tend to be a bit cooler. The extra layer would probably make it easier to catch a nap and if you dont use the sweatshirt, it could still be balled up to make a nice pillow if you don't want to invest in the blow up kind.

*******
check with your airline to see if they will allow you to bring snacks on your plane. A small box or two of raisins might make for a nice snack while you are waiting to be fed on the plane. The 100 calorie bags of whatever and a package of peanut butter crackers might also save you a bit of money while in the airport.

Where can I find a Backpackers backpack in Kansas City, Missouri?

camping backpack stores

StorminGor

I am traveling to study abroad in Germany in a couple months and I am looking for a pack to go with me.

I've been to Cabella's and Bass Pro but i'm not looking for a camping backpack and when I went to Cabella's the guy had no idea what he was talking about (He admitted it himself).

Any help? We don't have an REI but surely there is a place that could help me out?

Answer
As someone who's done a lot of backpacking and camping in my time - I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean either. As I know it, there are 3 basic kinds of backpacks - frameless, internal frame, and external frame. You may be thinking of external frame as the "camper's backpack" I'm guessing, in which case you are looking for an internal frame perhaps? Frameless is like your basic rucksack, or the type of backpack a kid takes to school, and as there is no shortage of those, I'm guessing it isn't what you want.

You might try Cabella's and Bass Pro again, instead asking for a light (or even ultralight) internal frame pack. Try the Bass Pro in Independence, it should carry more than the Olathe store. Also, any sporting goods store, such as Dick's Sporting Goods at Town Center in Overland Park (or is it Leawood?) or Sports Authority (Lenexa, Tiffany Springs). You can also try an army surplus shop like Mickey's Surplus if that's more your style.

Where can I go primitive camping in the New York area?

Looking for a place where I can go primitive camping (open camping/dispersion camping) within driving distance (less than 5 hours) in the New York City area. Anyone know of a National Forest or park that allows this that they would recommend? One with great hiking would be ideal. I'm looking to go in the fall when the leaves start the change. Many thanks.

Answer
you can get to many places within a 5 hour radius of nyc...
in new york state you can go to the adirondacks or catskills (the catskills are closer but the ADK's are way more magnificent)...

since you're willing to drive up to 5 hours you can also get to places within new england such as vermont and new hampshire..in NH the area around mt washington and the presidential range has the best mountain scenery in the east

...as far as specific camp istes you'll have to do your own research depending on if you want to car camp, backpack or canoe camp and depending on how difficult you want

Where are good places in southern Maine to go backpacking?

Bruins

I would like to go backpacking in southern maine for a couple of days. I was wondering which places in Maine would be good for it. I am looking for someplace in the complete wildnerness, where there are trails going through the forest, so I can hike and then camp for night and build a fire or something. Thanks,

Answer
Just type "Appalachian Trail in Maine" in any search engine, and you'll get a lot of links to explore.
The Maine part of the AT is some of the best wilderness trail in the entire US...one definition of wilderness is the absence of roads. It's been a while, I'm a Thru-Hiker, having hiked the entire trail from Georgia to Maine; but I'm a little rusty about the particulars, terrain, etc...it varies greatly in Maine...I'll tell you this, none of it is for novices. Also, time of year is important. June is out due to Black Flies. It can get really wintry, real quick in late September, requiring four-season equipment, at higher elevations; speaking of which, the elevation profile probably varies something like four to five thousand feet! Watery, boggy areas, too. But, that's the price of the true beauty, uniqueness of self-propelled, self-contained wilderness travel, isn't it? I recall one stretch of 90 miles, rugged terrain, to make it to the next civilization. This should be enough "complete wilderness," as you say, for you.
But I digress. I know one town, named Monson, Maine, that had a hiker's hostel, which may still be there. Also, at or near Rangeley, Maine...another cool place...there's canoe trips from there as well. Use either of these cities as a jumping-off spot for the AT...I think Monson is actually on the trail itself, or very nearby.
Google or Mapquest these two locales, also go to the Appalachian Trail Conference website, obtain strip topographic sectionals maps, guidebooks, etc. There is probably all kinds of social networking going on among AT hikers now too, where you can easily gain useful info. Again,if you're looking for ready-made , available wilderness hiking in southern Maine, I can't think of a more ideal situation than the Appalachian Trail there. Hey, I just realized both those areas may be too far north...there's lots more trail south, down to the Kennebec river...like I say, I'm a little rusty...by the way, beginning any time now, the Fall Leaf show is the absolute most spectacular I've ever seen, and I've been around the world twice. Also just realized that right around now, probably the bulk of the remaining Thru-Hikers are entering Maine from New Hampshire.
I just got this website for you, which will probably have all your answers: http://www.matc.org/

What do I get my friend for her birthday who loves Transformers?

kids backpacks zebra print

Set your l

She's having a birthday party on the 30th, and I'm kinda stuck on what to get her.
The only class we had together during the school year was first period, art. We had science together for about half a year but then I got switched to an advanced class. She's a very quiet girl, doesn't have many friends really. Candy or anything like that is out of the question, because I know she has diabetes, not sure which type, but no candy just to be safe. I'm not really sure if she has other things wrong with her besides the diabetes thing or not, but I know she usually sits with the kids who have to sit with the special ed teacher at lunch. She wears what would be the typical norm for most girls our age, stuff like jeans, sweats from abercrombie or whatever, t-shirts, and she always wears this blue jacket that I think is from Aeropostale, and flip flops, jewelry, etc. She wears makeup too, and carries this pink and black zebra print purse with her that has a cross on it. She appears to be a girly girl by the way she dresses, but then she has her, I guess you could say, tomboy-ish ways. She LOVES Transformers. She's like, obsessed with them. She has a Transformers backpack, with all of these Transformers stickers covering them. She has them hanging off of her purse, which with what her purse looks like, I'm sure you can imagine it to be very different. xD Any time we would have free sketch time in art before, she would always be drawing them. I'll sit with her from time to time in art, but she doesn't talk that much, so I honestly don't know a whole lot about her. She isn't a big texter, either, so yeah. Whenever we would talk in art, she would mainly just talk about Transformers. I tried to follow the conversation, but I couldn't really get that into it because I've never seen any of the movies or anything. xP

I texted her and asked her what she wanted for her birthday, and she just said "Uh i dont care i love transformers so it doesnt matter megatrons one of my favorites". Okay, well I guess that helps some. I also remember her bringing up quite a few times in art that she does NOT like that one called Optimus Prime. I don't remember exactly what she said about the one named Bumblebee.

So, I guess going with something Transformer-ish would be the best bet, because I really don't even know what type of music she likes hardly, I know she listens to like, country and rap some, but I think she isn't that big of a music person. She doesn't ever talk about guys.

Thing is, I know NOTHING about Transformers, so I have no clue what I would get her. So, I need all of y'alls help. Also, I guess age would be a good thing to know. We're going into the 8th grade this fall, and I'm 13, and she's going to be turning 14.

I'm pretty sure she would already have the action figure for the Megatron one hanging on her purse, and I know she has a Transformers shirt. I'm sure she's already seen that new movie that recently came out, so tickets to see it probably wouldn't be the best idea. I think it might be weird getting her those Transformers toys/action figures things they have next to the Hot Wheels section in the boys toys section at Walmart, because I've never been to her house, and I don't know if she like, likes those type of things, or if she's just into watching the movies and drawing them and whatnot.

Now, I see on anime-toybox.com that they have this ring that has the logo for Autobot, and a necklace with Autobot that I found under google shopping, and I wondered if maybe she would like those?? Is Autobot within the same league or whatever of Megatron? :P I'm clueless.

Then again, I think she might have a necklace with one of those transformers logos on it.

D: Gahh, this is confusing. She's just different than a lot of my friends, and I don't know what to get her. A jacket, maybe? Because I'm 99% sure she doesn't have a transformers jacket. I wonder if her party is gonna be themed that or something... Who knows.

So, yeah. I guess it doesn't HAVE to be something Transformers, but something I guess you'd think she would like. Also, I guess my budget would be around $20, because I don't have any money and my mom would be the one paying for it. :P Also, it would be even better if it was something you could get at a Target, Walmart, or Walgreens/CVS, and not have to order online. :P

Sorry this is long! XP
She just texted me, she said, and I quote "My party is gunna be huge you will never forget it my dad got fireworks we have an underground pool (I guess she means inground), an airplane runway (?? still don't know exactly what this means, but cool xD), snacks, a stereo,we all can stay up all night, oh and its also a sleepover too its gunna be fucking awesome oh and did you go and she TF3 TRANSFORMERS 3?"

xD This sounds pretty fun. and I told her I hadn't seen it yet. xD
Oh yeah! My mom just reminded me that we live right near a Russell Stovers outlet, so we can always get some sugar free candies from there, because they actually have good tasting sugar free stuff. xD

Thanks to those who've answered so far! I'll have to ask her if she has any gaming systems.

Answer
If she has any gaming devices, there are multiple transformers video games for DS, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Answer
The definition is "stupid". Period.
Those are just labels media and peers give to other people who dress/act a certain way.
People say that "Emo" are kids who usually dress in black, and cut themselves due to depression. Well, I know LOTS of kids who "dress in black" or "Dress emo", But they're the happiest people in the world and don't cut themselves. ANYBODY could cut there self and not have an "emo look". Emo is a style of clothing that inadvertently got mixed up with a bunch of CRAP about self harm. Most of the "emo kids" are just trying to get attention.

Goth again, A style that's usually decked out in black, chains, black nail polish and eye/lip make-up, unhappy loners, people obsessed with death, blood and gore and have a relationship with Satan. Again, That's a complete stereotype. Some one could dress like a goth and be the most religious, friendliest, happiest, vegan person you've ever met. And people who don't dress goth can have that same personality as a stereotypical goth. I think a lot of times someone likes a style so they live up to that styles character as well to avoid being called a "poser" or "fake".

Prep- Well, That's what girl number 2 is, Lol. Prep isn't as deep as goth or emo. Prep is basically a girly girl. Or for a guy- Metro or just a jock who wears A.E and crap. Personality wise you'd typically say they're superficial and stuck-up, But you can meet "preps" who are kind and generous and you can meet people who are not "preps" and they're stuck-up and superficial. As always, It's a stereotype and a label.

Scene- That would be "my"category. I NEVER call myself scene. OTHER people call me that because I tease my hear, Wear bows, Have funky eye make-up and all that jazz. I tend to be random and obsessed with Hello Kitty. So because I "look scene"- That's what I am? Well, There are also a lot of quote "scene things" that I hate and a lot of "un scene" things that I love. I don't have 9 facial piercings, I don't have my hair 7 different hair colors, I HATE a lot if not most of the music a "scene kid is SUPPOSED to listen to"- I hate shows, I hate those stupid tacky neon bead bracelets, I hate tu-tus and raccoon eyeliner, those are all things a "scene kid" is suppose to do or love. I don't like them so I am not going to do them weather someone says I'm "not a real scene" or "fake" Idfc if I'm a "real scene". I'm just being me and doing Lindsey. I'm not trying to live up to a label.

Punk- What todays "punk" is and what the "original" punk is are too different things. But just a label nonetheless. Punks are "suppose" to be rebels believe in anarchy, head bang, Play guitar, wear Tripp pants and band shirts and they get called "punks" Avril Lavigne when she first came out was what the today's "punk" is, But the original "punk" person wasn't exactly like that. It would be hard to describe the style- But it deff involves spikes, mohawks, heavy music, and all that jazz. AGAIN, Just a label. Just a stereotype. People could behave like a punk, but not dress like one. And vise versa.

Basically with ANY "style" there is a character/behavior and attitude that's "suppose" to go along with it. So there is two "meanings" to each label you listed. You can live up to that style or you could live up to that character and STILL be label.

It's just a bunch of crap though. Because People are not bound by one style and styles can be universal. This is the pollution that media and peers and stereotypes intoxicate and manipulate our minds with.

And as for the first girl, I won't label you, But your "style" doesn't really fit any of the listen categories or even one that I can think of. You're just modern and you wear what you like.

Answer
Yeah, quite possible in Australia.
We don't have ranches, we call them stations, eg sheep station.
The job would be as a roustabout or jackaroo.
Lots of young people come to Australia, backpacking, and working at a variety of rural jobs.
Around here, near Bundaberg in Queensland, the local fruit growers depend on backpackers to pick their fruit.
You'll need to apply for the correct visa from the Australian embassy in Amsterdam, which will allow you to work.

Here's a link to an employment agency specialising in the sort of job you're looking for.

and a link to an appropriate Australian visa

Im 19 and I am going to England in 2 wks to visit my boyfriend that I met in college.?

Q. I was wondering what to wear( like to clubs and such because I want to look good but not trashy) as wellas what to expect from his friends (boys and girls). Do english people really hate Americans? Thank you.

Answer
Most European countries don't exactly 'love' Americans too much. If someone in Germany or another such country were to find out that your from the US, they wouldn't hesitate to steal from you. However, if you're from Canada, they welcome you with open arms. My advice would be to stick some Canadian flags on your backpack and suitcase, even wear a pin on your shirt. Also ask your boyfriend what the girls wear there, whats cool, but not trashy.

Might not work if you're from southern US though.

Answer
I can tell you the most memorable prank we ever did to a guy at youth camp!!

We waited until he was sleeping, then we just took his backpack and his duffel bag with all of his stuff and all of his clothes and hid them in one of the locked cars outside.

In the morning, of course the adults hustle us to get ready to get to the activities, and he was running around freaking out, and all he had was his boxer shorts that he slept in!!

He was going down the halls, having to talk to the adults, saying someone stole his stuff, and he looked so ridiculous in only underwear in front of everyone!!

How do I know if I packed too much for a 2-night, 3-day camping trip?

I have a huge duffel bag full of the following: one pair of shoes, one pair of flip flops(we are going to be camping by the beach) two pairs of jeans, one pair of shorts, four shirts, one sweatshirt, two towels, two small bags of toiletries, my bible, two books, and undergarments.

It fills the bag to make it look huge. I dont want to look stupid cause Im going with my youth group but is that proper to bring that much stuff.

Answer
You have enough stuff to last you 2 weeks. As has been mentioned, you will be leaving in 1 set of clothes. If you're leaving in the evening, then take a clean shirt and under clothes for the start of the next day.

Based on what you said about a duffel bag, I would assume that you will be on a heavy impact camp out. This means you will be camping close to your vehicle.

On a heavy impact camp out, you can take a little more than you would take backpacking. I still wouldn't take more than the 1 pair of pants that you start out with. Don't wear blue jeans. Wear a light weight, quick drying pair of pants. I like the style that un-zips just above the knees.

I always take shirts for every day I'm camping. I have the room and don't have to carry it far.

One towel is sufficient for a weekend. I have a small towel made from a material that absorbes water and dries quickly that was purchased at Academy.

You didn't say where you will be going, but living in Texas as I do, I can't imagine any place that would require a sweat shirt this time of year.

All you need for toiletries is a small tooth brush and paste. Leave the deoderant in the vehicle for the trip back home. It's a bear caller. You want to smell like a human to help scare them away.

Take your Bible.

Wear moisture wicking material under-garmets. Both for upper and lower body. Don't wear cotton as this material just soaks up water and doesn't dry quickly. This includes blue jeans. They are hotin the summer and cold in the winter, heavy and slow drying.

There are a lot of good check lists available on the internet. They are too long to list hear. Check the sources box for links.
