camping backpack cheap image

A couple of friends and I want to do this together. I don't mean Hostels every night and resturaunts and big cities, I mean Camping out, street food, Hitching rides, Rural towns, really experiencing the places we go. We want to go all the way through and back, and spend as much time as we can doing it. I'd say 6-8 months. How much would it be per person to really survive?
Answer
Well it is best to have a little more money and be a little over prepared than under so I considered that when I made my calculations. Eating on the side of the road is pretty cheap (and unlike mexico is relatively safe as far as parasites are concerned) plus you have to factor in water all day and if you are doing alot of hiking you will want to stay hydrated so I figured you could survive on anywhere between $10 to $15 a day depending on which country you are in (some countries these things will be a little more expensive. I calculted on a 6 month span so if you go eight you can just add 1/3 of these prices to that. For food and drink for 6 months "roughing" it I would say no more than $2,300 and no less than $1,800. Now lets say that even half the time you are staying in hostels they avarege about $7 - $10 per night. So lets say you stay half of your time (3 months) in hostels you are looking at around $650 - $1,000. You can probably better do the calculations since you would have a better understanding of how long you will actually stay in a hostel and how long you will rough it. Planning on hitching will save you money but I would factor in some extra for just in case scenarios. I think you could probably survive on $2,500 to $3,000 dollars easy (maybe even less). Just a side note I live on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala and I would definately suggest checking it out it is a backpackers paradise and arguably the most beautiful lake in the world. Have fun and be safe!!!

What are some things to do while camping when its raining?
Kingocal
Going camping in the Sierra Nevadas. Going to rain for two of the four days. Bringing alot of games and DVD's anything else?
Answer
Wear rain gear and/or carry an umbrella and go hiking in the rain. Why stay stuck in a tent when cheap and lightweight gear is available to keep you dry and comfortable outdoors in the worst of conditions. With everyone else hiding in their tents you'll have the wilderness to yourself.
It rained every day of our backpacking trip to Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite NP last summer and my family and I stayed dry using just our umbrellas and our windbreaker jackets and these little Sierra Newts were all over the trail:

And from last fall until this spring there was rain almost every week around here and thanks to my Frogg Toggs rain suit I was able to go mountain biking every week on my day off, rain or shine.
