Can a 15 yr old carry on a lighter on a plane?

Aight so my mom is flying out with me to a summer camp and I already got myself hooked up with some 'stuff' there, just no lighter.

I researched that you can bring one on a carry on, but I'm only 15 so they might call me out on that one. Also my mom CANNOT see that I have a lighter. Would they let it through no problems if its just one small BIC lighter in my backpack? Or take it out in front of my mom and ask about it?

There is no problem bringing a lighter in your carry-on. Their primary job is not to try and catch kids with things they really have no reason having. They are more concerned with things that could be a threat to the airplane, crew, or other passengers. Also, as it goes through the screening they don't spend the time to match up a bag with a person..so they would really have no idea if the lighter belongs to a 15 year old or a 115 year old.

The problem you have is that IF something in your backpack triggers an alert as it goes through the screening. They will pull the bag, and the owner of the bag(in this case you) off to the side and do an additional screening. This screening would include them opening the bag to resolve the issue. So it could be possible that they pull out the lighter and your mom would see it.

I am driving across the country with a friend and flying back.
Can i bring my backpack with me onto the plane and sit it on my lap?
Or does it have to fit inside the overhead compartment? How big is the overhead compartment?
I am hoping to have only this as luggage.

Yes, unless it's like 4 feet long and 50 pounds (don't bring the kind made for for camping).
