Backpacking through Europe?! Help please!?

So, I am planning to backpack through Europe and possibly parts of Asia during the Summer of 2011. I plan to travel the entire Summer from May to the first week in August. I would like your advice and tips for traveling on just about everything. I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok, Cody's answer was pretty dang funny! Nothing wrong with a Army rucksack though. Not the most comfortable option for backpacking but it will meet the minimum requirements.

1. Map and Compass (May Supplement with GPS Receiver)
2. Flashlight or Headlamp
3. Extra Food and Water
4. Extra Clothes
5. Sunglasses and Sunscreen
6. First Aid Kit
7. Knife or Multi-tool
8. Matches or a Lighter
9. Water Treatment Device
10. Whistle
