If it's your first time driving out west, the Pacific Coast Highway from Vancouver Island in British Columbia [there's a ferry to Port Angeles from Victoria that's considered part of the highway] all the way down to Baja California (Mexico) is the way to go. One of the best drives in the world.
Even the California section by itself is great.
You'll see most of the very best that California has to offer, the rugged northern coast (redwood forests too), San Francisco, Santa Cruz/Monterey Peninsula, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego.
Plenty of opportunity for camping, hiking, and surfing along the way.

HikeVancouver Canada area OR North-West Washington? Best place to backpack through beautfiul old growth forest?
Lal
I am planning a backpacking trip in either North/West Washington like Olympic Park or to Vancouver. I will only have three nights and I am looking for 1-2 intermediate 5-6 hour backpacking trips so the area will have to give camping permits that will bring us through some beautiful old growth forest and by some streams or falls :) The problem is there is so much!!! The beautiful old growth forest in Twilight prompted me to plan the trip plus I've heard Washington is gorgeous. I've done the Ponderous old growth forest of Northern Cali but know I want to see old growth ground covering in the North/West like, beautiful mossy landscape and lush green ferns :) I am taking amtrack to Seattle so I don't want to have to drive more then 2-3 hours to my destination. Any recommendations?
PS we will be going the third week of June so high altitude hikes are out of the question. Will it be green at all mid June in this area? Any help appreciated :) Thank you!

In Vancouver itself, the Capilano Canyon is great. Just above the Suspension Bridge is a fish hatchery - just below the dam. There are walking trails through there into old growth forest - and, it's right close to town. The city bus even goes to the street outside the park! You could easily go 5-6 hours in that area.
The best old growth I know of is Cathedral Grove. That is on Vancouver Island, on the way to Port Alberni. The park area is fairly small, but, the trees are amazing... it is so like a cathedral. Biggest trees I've ever seen anywhere. It is a bit further out of the way though.
I do not now about Washington State. I was in Olympic park like 45 years ago, and really don't remember it.
