i've heard its not a "real" off road suv but its not like i do any hardcore off roading anyway. the most i do are moderately tough dirt roads in the mountains to get to camping/backpacking places...

take your time just crawl the suspension is not designed for off roading no suv is they just have four wheel drive in case you need it but they are not intended for off road if you have to use your four wheel drive on the mountain you probably shouldnt be in a liberty or a trail blazer or a bronco II. the manufacturersd should be sued for some of their commercials

are there any places i can camp in the back-country with my jeep, in the Catskills or near there?

will be going to Long Island in November, and would like to go...car camping?..camping with my jeep in the back-country. not camping where there's RVs and toilets, and water, and stuff, but in the back-country isolated, with me, my jeep, and a tent.
catskills seem like an ideal place, but could be anywhere within 2 hours from NYC/LI.

AFAIK, there is no publicly-accessible land where you could legally drive off-road in back-country and camp. If you leave your vehicle behind, there are many options for hiking and backpacking. And there is plenty of private land and private hunting preserves where you could (and I have) gone camping and off-roading as part of a planned and landowner-authorized Jeep club outing. There are also at least two off-road parks within 3 or 4 hours of Long Island where you can camp (in a campsite, with RV's and trailers) and then wheel on established trails for a fee.
This is not to say that there aren't places you might find, but to just drive out onto someone's property or state land without permission is not only illegal but is exactly the type of ammunition used by neo-facist environmentalists in their battle to further restrict off-highway vehicle use on public land.
I've been to both of the off-road parks listed below, and while the camping isn't going to win any awards (or even honorable mentions), the off-roading ranges from fun to terrifying! In fact, I'm going to Rausch Creek this weekend with my club.
