I know this is subjective and it depends on where I'm going, how long I'll be there, etc.
I won't be going for a few years (when I'm 18 or so), so I guess it's kind of silly to ask this question in the first place. However, I will be coming into quite a bit of money soon and I'd like to use it wisely, so I've been planning. I am willing to spend a nice portion on backpacking.
I'd like to go for two to three months. I would want to be as safe as possible. I feel like I'd really enjoy the UK, so I'd like to spend quite a bit of time in Northern Ireland and England (the lesser populated areas, not just London). I want to make sure I set aside money to be extra, extra comfortable. I would end up buying extra things, drinking alcohol, eating out, etc. I think I would prefer staying at hostels as opposed to regular hotels. I understand it varies from city to city, but how much do you think it would cost per day under those circumstances?
also, do you have any backpacking experiences? do you live in europe?

At this time, backpacking hostels and eating out, expect 100 pound per day.
If you are under 26 this will be extra comfortable and will allow you to travel by train on tickets bought on the day (more expensive than bought in advance) and the odd taxi to a hostel if you arrive late.
When over 26 many costs go up and your 100 pound per day will not cover much luxerious things.
But prices will go up and exchange rates will change. That 100 pound per day is now $US 165, but can be a completely different number by the time you are ready to travel.
Hostels is good when you travel alone as it is mostly much easier to make contact with other than in hotels.
They are also a bit cheaper, but not as widely available.
I love traveling in England (been twice a year on average for the last 20 years or so) and have been to Scotland and Wales too, but not to Northern Ireland.
Do not plan to do too much, take at least a week for one country and extra time in the mayor city of that country, London rates a week of you really want a taste. You can spend months there and still not see all.
I would pick a few random hostels from the hosteling international list, (if you want to go off the beaten track) and look up the reviews or the internet pages for the areas they are.
I loved the Lake District, Exmoor national park (although I did not stay in a hostel there) and have visited cities, smaller towns and villages all over England I would love to go back to.
Remember that the UK is rarely warm, also not in summer, and that the tourist season runs from May to early October, that July and August are the busiest time but that weather is often better in May and June.
If you also want to visit Continental Europe, the same goes, take your time, select a big city, a smaller one and some nature or villages, or a beach resort if that is more your thing. There are many answers on Yahoo Answers about backpacking Europe, with or without Eurail (or Britrail in the UK) or InterRail which is for Europeans. Just search for them and they will pop up.
