I'm right outside NYC, in NJ, and I'm looking for some good sites to go camping. I've only ever been camping at Kittatinny.
Kittatinny is ok, I like how rafting and such is easy access to the grounds, but I hate how you're so close to your neighbors. It's more like a residential area in the suburbs, where instead of houses you have tents. I want a more private camping experience.
Also, I like to fish and raft/canoe/kayak, so those are things I'm looking for as well.
Thank you for any and all help!

Harriman State Park is about 30 miles north of NYC just off the Palisades Interstate Parkway. They have group campsites that are only available through reservation with boat launches and such.
Harriman State Park is very large and offers a large expanse of woodland with many trails. If your looking for primitive camp options there are shelter sites on certain trails that have a stone lean-to shelter and more open land to set up tents. To get to these sites you must backpack in. Be sure to do research on proper backpacking technique instead of lugging all your stuff in the hard way. Remember, carry in, carry out. We don't want to see your garbage. Happy Trails!

Any NYC transportation that will take me near a campsite?
hell0iamsy
Basically, a bunch of girls are trying to planning on a camping trip yet none of us have a car so I'm trying to find a NYC transportation (port authority bus/LIRR/NJ Transit) that'll take me a near a camping site.
Much appreciated! Thanks

You could take Metro North up to Suffern, etc http://www.nynjtc.org/park/harriman-bear-mountain-state-park
Or you could take the LIRR out to the Fire Island ferries and ferry over or take the LIRR out to Mastic and take a cab down to either the Fire Island Wilderness or Smith Point Park. The Fire Island Otis Pike Wilderness is excellent but there are no campgrounds, you will be backpacking. Smith Point Park has a campground and there are camp grounds on Fire Island.
