I am doing Linear programming at the moment in Algebra 2 and its extremely difficult for me.
A camping supply company produces backpacks in two models journey and trek. The journey model requires 4 hours of labor, and the company makes a profit of 40$. The trek model requires 6 hours of labor, and the company makes a profit of 80$. The distributor will accept no more than 4 trek models and 15 journey models per week. What is the minimum number of hours of labor that are required for the company to make a profit of at least 400$ per week.
I understand how to graph it once I have the constraints, but I have no clue how to do word problems and my teacher didnt go over word problems in class but since we are in honors he wants us to do these. So basically all I need are the constraints and maybe an explanation on how you pulled them out of the problem. Thanks in advance :D
Answer
basically it is the same process as setting up any word problem.
and, quite frankly, your pride in knowing how to graph it once you have been given constraints, is totally useless in the year 2012. It's about as useful as being proud of knowing how to take the square root of 17 by hand without a calculator. Most high end calculators can also do that. You need to develop the other skill - that of understanding a problem and setting it up for your technology.
step 1, the variables:
T=number of trek models
J=number of journey models
step 2, the object function, labor
L = 4J + 6T
step 3, constraints
40J + 80T>=400
T<=4
J<=15
Maximize L = 4J + 6T subject to
40J + 80T>=400
T<=4
J<=15
pot it into your calculator and it will tell you:
Optimal Solution: Ll = 84; J = 15, T = 4

Tips for beginner backpacker?
rebexhugnn
I really want to get into backpacking and hiking because I've decided my life is too centered around the luxuries of suburban life, but I have no idea where to start. I have pretty much zero experience with the great outdoors, other than I run on trails a lot, because my mom has always been grossed out by dirt. I am not like this at all, I can sleep on the ground if need be and I'm willing to try anything it takes to get close to nature, but I really need help in figuring out where to go, what to bring, and how much weight I should carry.
So far I have a very small CamelBak that I used for marching band and I think it would be perfect for a day hike (the 2011 mini mule), but you really can't fit much in it. I also have a much bigger one that would be good for a weekend (I can't find the model, but It's similar to the 2012 luxe), a gerber mulitool, and a first aid kit. What else do I need? I also live around the Dallas/ Fort Worth area so do you know of any good hiking places near here?
To help with how much weight I should put in it, I'm female, 17, 5'6'', 105 pounds, and pretty good muscle tone. Thank you for your time, and all advice would be appreciated!

Backpacker Magazine provides a lot of information on gear that may be useful to you.
You have an ideal weight and height for backpacking. You must be in great shape.
Dallas/Fort Worth would not be my ideal choice of areas for backpacking, since I live in a cool mountain climate surrounded by many designated wilderness areas in the National Forests.
If you can get up to Colorado during the summer, then I suggest that you explore the Fourteeners.
You can come and join me, since I am on a mountain every week.
However, Texas does have a few areas that may be interesting for you.
As far as gear goes, I suggest a GoLite 65 backpack for you, about $100. Buy a Marmot Sawtooth or similar down sleeping bag or Sierra Designs DriDown, about $250. Go with an ultralight tent, $300. Get a sleeping pad, $120. I prefer Nalgene liter bottles over any CamelBak. You also should get a water filter, $100. A backpacking stove is very convenient, $100.
Backpacking is not filthy. You can boil water, use soap, and stay very clean when outdoors. It simply takes a little more time and energy for good hygiene when camping.
