What is a good spot to go camping within 2 hours from Los Angeles?

Answer
Car-camping, hike-in, or motorhome? ObviousMan did a good job of covering the beach campgrounds in the area, but there is also lots of wilderness camping withing two hours of L.A. Also, be aware that at most of the beachfront state parks, if you're tent-camping, you'll probably be flanked by motorhomes on both sides.

San Gorgonio (Big Bear area) and San Jacinto (Idyllwild) have a number of drive-in and hike-in camping, with lots of great backpacking. Near Idyllwild, there's also drive-in and hike-in camping at Lake Hemet -- a couple miles east of Mountain Center.

The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Angeles Crest Hwy about 10 miles east of La Canada-Flintridge (in the mountains above Pasadena). There are a number of hike-in campsites in the area and I *think* there area a few drive-in sites.

There are several campgrounds in the Santa Monica mountains (just inland of Malibu).

In Orange County, there are a number of drive-in and hike-in sites in the Santa Ana Mtns, including O'neill Park (Trabucco Canyon) and Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park (Ortega Hwy, between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore) - there are several more campgrounds along Ortega Hwy, but I don't recall the names off the top of my head.

Just north of L.A., there's camping around Castaic Lake and Lake Piru.

San Gorgonio and San Jacinto are both 11,000' foot peaks, so they have a real "mountain camping" feel with pine forests.

Lake Hemet is about 5,000 feet and is alpine meadows with scattered pine copses.

The Orange County, Santa Monica Mtns, and Castaic Lake sites are all coastal range - brush and scrub oak.

At the edge of your 2-hour range are the Sierras north of Bakersfield. There are countless campgrounds at numerous small High-Sierra lakes in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, including the giant sequoias at Grant's Grove (site of the famous "drive-thru" tree)

Where is a good place to shop for backpacking and camping clothing/gear in Los Angeles?

Answer
shop the big names Like rei, dicks, sport chalet. Then go to walmart, big5 and sometimes gun shops or combo stores like Bass pro. Prices vary greatly so don't get taken for big bucks at an rei when you can get the same gear elsewhere for a lot less.
