Leave in March out of state, so if I am too make this trip, I must go in the winter. However I did a little research and found two things discouraging me. One is that I read camping is not allowed at panther creek. Yet as a kid I have seen A lot of people camp there and to this day know of some that continue in doing so. Will I have any trouble camping there? Two is I have not heard of anyone doing this camping trip in the winter..While im sure this has to do with everyone having the preference of going in the spring/summer time. Just wanted to make sure the cold was all that keep people from camping there. LASTLY I am a avid outdoors man and will be taking the appropriate gear.
Panther Creek tail in Georgia.

Apparently, there are some hikers that do hike the Panther Creek Trail (Fannin County, Georgia) in winter. One blogger listed this trail as his 'Hike of the Day' for Dec. 31. 2010. He says its a popular dayhike for good reason and suggests going midweek for more solitude.

According to another hiker/blogger, "You'll need more than a day to explore everything Panther Creek Trail has to offer, you can camp at Sylco Campground."
There are other campgrounds near Panther Creek Trail...such as Lake Conasauga Campground, listed as 4 miles away.
I'm sure the cold weather will keep some hikers off the trail and indoors during winter. Take advantage of the cold weather, bring the proper gear, and Go Hike It!

need help with picking out camping gear?
im going on a field trip to wahsega 4h camp. There cabins have no heat so were required to bring sheets or a sleeping bag. So i want to bring a sleeping bag. I have no experience with camping gear what so ever. And Wahsega 5h camp is in the north georgia mountains. Or something like that. So like what are your recommendations on any bags. thanks

Since it doesn't sound like you are backpacking in, I wouldn't be to concerned with buying a high end expensive bag. The North Face, Kelty and Mountain Hardwear all make some decent bags that can be under $100.
If you think you'll use it a lot, and will backpack with it, then go with something a bit better/lighter/compact. I still like the brands listed above, but they make some more quality stuff for more money.
For the area you'll be in, a 20 degree bag is all you should need.
Find something you like, then go to:
trailspace.com
or
spadout.com
to find the best prices.
If sunnysports.com has what you like, they'll beat any other legit online price that you can find.
