If so, what sections would you recommend for day-hikes?
Would one need to camp/tent or are the trailheads close
to towns/motels, etc.

There are a lot of sections that are absolutely great (I haven't done all of them, but what I've done is great). If you want to get the BEST information, go to www.ozarktrail.com. There is all kinds of great info., and there's a forum where a lot of very experienced OT people are. You'll find all you need to know and more.
Sorry, but I also wouldn't pay attention to "Caroll"'s answer. The Katy Trail and Ozark Trail are completely different. If you're looking for true hiking and possibly backpacking, you want the OT. Katy is a nice, flat trail that's not true "backcountry."

Rough camping with my 9 year old?
My 9 year old daughter and I are going rough camping. She is a tomboy and loves being outside and playing sports so she's not worried about it. But what items should I tell her to pack into her backpack? Besides clothes and were going in the summer and catching our own food. We are also camping in missouri if this will help you answer my question. She is really responsible and what should she bring to keep herself busy. It's just me and her and her cousin austin and her uncle.

This may seem obvious, but be sure she brings sensible shoes or hiking boots. At age 9, they don't always make the best decisions for themselves. I once went on an extended camping trip, only to find that the only shoes my daughter packed were a pair of flip-flops, and her shiny dress shoes. No hiking until we went and bought her more shoes. Check her bag prior to your departure. Be sure her clothes are appropriate for the trip. Pack plenty of snacks, maybe a small game to keep her occupied during those 'I'm bored' moments.
