This question is for the ones that do backpack camping...?

stargazer

Our of curiosity, I wanted to know when you backpack camp, what all do you take with you? Tent? Food or do you live off the land and what do you eat? Do you pack a fishing pole to catch fish to eat? Or do you catch them with your bare hands? lol.
I have my own kind of camping. Never done a backpack camping trip and was just wondering what all people take to survive.
And another question is, do any of you have small children that you take with you? How well do they handle it?
Any other info is also helpful.
This is just a curiosity question. I camp in my own way, they way I was raised. I went from tent camping that I don't remember, too young, to a trailer, then back to tent camping for 17 years, now I am back in a trailer. I just want to know how you guys do it when you backpack camp.

Answer
To begin with, anyone who backpacks and thinks they can live "off the land" is ignorant. I can't tell you how many very hungry morons I've seen in the California Sierra's back country.

I always have a fishing rod with me when I backpack. I take freeze dried foods for ALL meals. I do supplement a few trout during every trip, but, only a fool depends on catching fish to eat.

I've taken young kids and they do just fine if you plan ahead and don't take them on "death march" type hikes. You do need to bring something to entertain them them while in the back country. Make sure they don't wander from camp.... I've had that happen once and it resulted in a 6 hour search that ended very well but extremely scary at the time.

Bring enough freeze dried food, small camp stove, medical kit, sun screen, repellent, something to keep dry and warm, light weight tent, source of evening light (some back country sites so not allow campfires), small digital camera, fishing gear and license(s) and definitely a way to safely purify water (boiling may not be an option due to fire restrictions).

Lastly, explain to all youngsters the importance of staying close to camp and also if lost, to stay near the trail at ALL times.

a confused kid's rant.. life, what the hell? ?

i realize this isn't really a question, but rather somewhat of a therapeuticc release for me. if you feel the urge to respond or even read the whole thing feel free, but i expect nothing.

what are my ambitions in life? do i want to become a successful adult, making oodles of money at a job that i absolutely, fully enjoy? yes. do i want to not be slave to salary and truly find and accept myself for who i am without the influences of modern society molding me? yes. do i want to find a good guy who is "man-thick," not fat but "man-thick" who i can fall completely in love with and start a beautiful family and have little boys that i can teach how to be excellent basketball players? yes. do i want to break away from the evil curse of laziness that i suffer from and do something amazing with my life, create memories, have something to look back on and be proud of? yes. do i want to make something more of my existence and not be one of those persons that i always despised who looks back at high school as the glory days? yes. i want to do all these things, but how will i ever accomplish this? these goals are so lofty and seemingly unreachable. how will i find that perfect man who will accept me and love me? how do i make all the easy money fast so that i can travel and enjoy it now, when i am young? i have no idea. its apparent that there can be small steps made that will lead me in the direction that i want to go, but am i even sure of the direction that i want to follow? not at all. i simply want life to feel like it can be something more that just 80 years of merely existing and having really no significant impact on the world around me. i have completely no idea how to satisfy this never-ending urge i have. to create, to change, to learn, to be. do others suffer this ailment or am i in the minority. i understand that this stage in my life is the appropriate time to be thinking about these things and to be ultimately and utterly confused. i am not a patient person. i want life to be figured out for me now. i feel as if there isn't enough time to get anything done and therefore nothing gets done. i hear stories and watch movies of people who have had numerous life experiences, have lived in several states, have found there way and reached the destination. they have worked in the fertile fields plowing hay, they have taken crazy, spontaneous road trips across the country, they have lived with the longhorns in texas, they have spent months backpacking across a foreign land. i want to be one of those. i want to just pick up and go. meet someone new. make lasting friends. move to india. but this will inevitably never happen. i am not brave enough to leave the comfort of my life now. i mean, i have liked the same guy since the third grade and have done nothing about it. what does that say about me? i went to college after high school and i couldn't even survive a year in a city, not even a big city, just an average, small city. i made no friends. i had to lie to everyone because that is not supposed to be me. i am supposed to be the one that can jump right in and get along with people and continue to flourish and succeed. but people don't understand who i really am. i am a dancing queen, an all-star basketball player, a brain, polite. but what else do people see in me. at first glance they are hesitant. is he... no wait she! but why? lesbian? no, i am not a lesbian. i suppose it is the true reflection of who i am. a chicken. lots of girls go through the tomboy stage, most grow out of it. but i was too afraid to change. afraid of what others would think or would say. i was good at hanging with the boys, playing football, and i liked doing those things, but i also like girl talk and gossiping. i even feel embarrassed to have written that because the reputation i currently uphold does not portray that. but because of the other half of me, girls typically don't let me into that circle. sure, i have some really great friends on the basketball team who have really accepted me and invited me in, and i am extremely grateful and love to hang out with them, but where will they be in two years? it feels good to get this out.

Answer
how insanely awesome that you admitted all of that! I loved it! So you forgot to turn girly and flirty. I always looked at sexy clothes and thought they were too old for me. Now funny enough, I think they are too young for me! i went with the cute thing. A lot of guys like it, and it is much easier than sexy. Actually, I have decided to wear a white shirt (different ones of course) every day this month becuase I am sick of trying to dress to impress other freaking housewives! LOL! You are the best. Go to a facial place. GET YOUR EYEBROWS WAXED. It is the simplest way to be feminine without trying too hard or being obvious. Go to any decent salon and ask them if they can "do your eyebrows" "wax your eyebrows" "eyebrow wax" just get the words eyebrow and wax out. Then, add a little liner above the top lashes and maybe some mascara and good old fashioned lip gloss (prefereably lightly tinted a rose color), even cherry chapstick will do, and smile. That is all that it takes! You will find a guy in no time.

Need a good backpack diaper bag for two kids?

KookiePenn

Hi. Please, I going on a trip & I am looking for a good backpack/diaper bag which can fit essentials & a little extra (mommy's cell phone, wallet, etc). Any suggestions? I've heard Baby Sherpa is good? Any other brands? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I always like using children's backpacks, especially since then I could have one for each of my kids that they liked or picked out. Especially with my daughter-- that way she wouldn't complain that it wasn't cute. Also, if you get a backpack and don't beat it up, oyu can use it when they are kindergarten, first grade, while they still don't need something big. This article has 3 really good options: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5652566/the_top_3_backpacks_for_girls_in_elementary.html?cat=25

I also like all of the backpacks by Wildkin. You can find Wildkin bags and all other kinds at eBags.com-- I love this website. They always have discounts and they carry good brand like Northface. Also, Land's End has great bags and you can get things monogramed.

What can be done so that kids learn how to live off the land?

Power

My son knows how to live off the land. He hiked the Appalacian Trail & didn't want to come back but he had to go back to school.

BQ:( I asked this backwards but I was trying to get a WHAT as the first word) Do you think kids should be taught how to live with out commercial products...live off the land?

In the county I live in when the kids are in 7th grade they go a way for a week or so & they live in a camp ground place. My one son hated it & the other son loved it.

Answer
We had various initiatives when we were younger like the international award that taught us how to not just live off the land but navigate, survive, ration, hike and set up shelter. We had to cover 70km of Sri Lankan mountainous terrain in 3 days with a 20kg backpack containing a tent and survival gear. It was a great experience but a lot of people didn't make it to the end. Most schools provide these kind of programmes but it is obviously very expensive for parents to fund them. If parents can't afford to send their children on these kinds of trips then they have to do it themselves, simple as.

Q. give my avatar a past, present and future......
what does it mean to be willowy exactly?

Answer
OK here goes - don't get mad now. You did ask for it.

Past - Totally pink bedroom. 250 stuffed animals on the bed. Each one had an adorable name and you made your father kiss each one of them good night every night (after reading Cinderella five times!) so you could avoid going to sleep. A precocious child, you used to wear your favorite Disney Princess costumes to pre school. Carried a Barbie lunchbox to first grade and by third grade graduated to Bratz. HUGE Full House fan. Wanted to be just like DJ when you grew up. Knew all the words to the score of Pocahontas. Sang Colors of the Wind at your Elementary School Graduation. Your mother cried.

Present - Redecorated your bedroom - now 60's retro with shag carpeting and the essential lava lamp and bead curtain on the door. Threw hissies every night for a month until you got your own phone and computer hookup in your bedroom. And then you talked the folks into the cell phone - properly bling covered just like Paris's. Middle school Princess O Prep. Never go anywhere without at least one Lisi Harrison book in your backpack. Know all the disses by heart and use them liberally to the amusement of your own clique. Madly in love with this kid in your Social Studies class who looks just like Zac Efron. He is like so hot! Favorite stores- The Gap and Old Navy. Your mother named you Claire after the Molly Ringwald character in The Breakfast Club - her absolute favorite movie ever. Thinking about getting a tongue piercing. They look so cool. Spent the summer on this boring vacation with your parents in Disneyworld listening to your two younger sibs fight. When you come home, you are heartbroken to learn that the guy in your Social Studies class has moved to California with his parents. Your grades suffer severely due to the depression.

Future - After college, you move to New York and pursue a career in the fashion industry - landing your dream job as Calvin Klein's personal assistant. What the job entails is going to Starbucks twice a day to get Calvin a double mocha latte - skim milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a blueberry muffin. He only eats the tops. You feed the bottoms to the pigeons in Central Park on your way home to your fabulous studio apartment after work. You become his muse and his 2012 collection is called The Claire Look. Pretty in Pink. At Fashion Week, you happen to run into the real Zac Efron who is now working as a house painter in upstate NY (all former child stars end up as house painters). You fall madly in love and move to a little town just outside Buffalo. Your first winter there, it snows 17 feet and you lose Zac when he slips off a ladder while clearing snow off the roof and dies in the resulting avalanche. Luckily he is insured. You buy a brand new Ford Edge (Blazing Copper - just like Derek Jeter's) and move to Florida where you get a job playing Sleeping Beauty at Disneyworld. You end up married to the guy named Howard Astaire who plays Captain Hook. Your name is now Claire Astaire and you have two kids - twin boys you name Chip and Dale.

That should about cover it. Enjoy your new life. Pax - C

Im looking for a story about Coca Cola's past sweepstake where they gave away a private plane

Yocrunch4

I think the winner outsmarted coke by buying a million bottles of coke and then just resold the plane for a cool profit. Could anyone find me an article about this.

Answer
It was Pepsi, and the promotion was called "Pepsi Points" back in the mid 90s (the current version is "Pepsi Stuff").

Here's the original commercial that started the whole thing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdackF2H7Qc

What happened was that Pepsi ran a promo where they advertised that if you saved up your Pepsi points you could get all this free stuff from them, like backpacks, video games, etc. At the end of the commercial, it showed a kid landing a Harrier fighter jet in his school parking lot with the caption "Harrier Jet: 7,000,000 Pepsi points," which was later changed to "700,000,000 Pepsi points" when they got sued.

What happened was that a guy noticed that the contest rules allowed customers to pay $0.10 a point for a pepsi point to make up for gaps they might need to claim a prize, so he borrowed $700,000 from his lawyer and sent Pepsi a check to claim his 7,000,000 Pepsi points, then demanded his jet (which was actually worth $22 million). The trial was a farce and the judge found in favor of Pepsi since the ad was clearly a joke. The guy suing them didn't get a dime out of it.

Here's a wikipedia article on the court case:

How good are Land's End backpacks?

Are they as good as LL Bean's? I want a backpack for my kids that lasts longer than a year. One's a teenager and one's 11. Any recommendations?

Answer
Well, their school backpacks are about the same - I've had a Land's end backpack and an LL Bean backpack and both lasted me for years or years. But, you'll want to get their backpacks that are advertised for school, anything with a 'frame' is probably meant for wildnerness, carry-everything-on-your-back-for-a-week, backpacking.

However, for your teenager, I've recently been seeing a lot of reasonably priced (well, around $30-$40) 'Swiss Army' backpacks. I got one myself, and they're definitely designed to be better for your back, they're really durable, and they've got all the pockets and such you need. My brother and i have both had ours for years, and they've both held up to all our college-related abuse pretty well.

Suggestions for a backpack for a first grader, please.?

wendysoran

I heard that Lands End and LL Bean make great quality backpacks but they are expensive and my ex husband won't split the cost with me unless I buy cheaper. The kids keep their backpacks outside of the class and they take a beating. Last year she had a cheapie Target brand and I had to keep sewing it up and washing it.

Any brand suggestions that hold up nicely?

Thank you!

Answer
the best answer i have for your ex is that the better quality backpacks last longer, and look better as well. so he will only have to buy it once a year, and probably less than once a year.

best of luck

btw, those are the best brands, and if i'm not mistaken, they have a guarantee, so they would be replaced if it 'dies'. think about that.
