Q. 1. Should I wear my volleyball shirt (one from my high school team that said bulldog volleyball)? Would that be like flashy to wear a volleyball shirt at camp? Should I wear something else?
2. Is it weird to use a backpack for a bag? I don't have a duffle :(
3. How do I make friends?

Answer
1) If it is an old jersey, I prob wouldn't wear that. If it is just a team logoed t-shirt, go for it. Bring multiple shirts incase you sweat through the first.
2) backpack is fine.
3) Focus on learning as much as you can at camp, but be willing to approach people and talk. Find a warm up buddy to start with. Then introduce yourself to whom ever you will be doing drills with.
At a camp, they might do a brief team building exercise such as name games, so think of your favorite ice cream and favorite color ahead of time!

Answer
It would have been better if you would have mentioned where you were camping. The majority of camping areas in the US are NOT in areas where you would be likely to encounter bears who would bother with humans. There is a huge difference between backpacking far into the backcountry in Montana and pitching a tent at a drive-in campground in New Jersey or southern Michigan, for example. With all that said, I backpacked for 30 some years, period or not, into the backcountry of Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Colorado, New York, Idaho, Michigan, Alberta and British Columbia and never had a problem encounter with a bear, even on at least 3 occasions when I was having my period and we were in areas where we saw evidence of a grizzly. In non-grizzly areas (99% of the lower 48 states) I wouldn't give it a second thought. Ditto for any non-backcountry campground.
In fact, my understanding is that some of the rash of bear attacks that occurred in Montana in the 80's happened because a bear was attracted to the scent of humans who had had sexual relations in a tent. The notion that bears are attracted to menstrual blood does not seem to have much support in actual experience.
BTW, the comments by the answerer above about women's supposed "moodiness" and vulnerability during menstruation are completely lacking in merit. My cycle never affected my physical, mental or emotional functioning. As a matter of fact, during the menstruation portion of a woman's cycle happens to be when her body chemistry and mental function are most similar to the average male's (due to drop in estrogen level.) It's the only time of the month when we may be as impatient and cranky as guys are normally.
