What kind of backpacks are cool for the eighth grade?

high sierra girls school backpacks

Answer
It really depends on the school but in my (semi-crunchy) college in New England Northface backpacks like the Isabella are really popular along with Dakine (more for guys) and those colorfully-upholstered Jansport backpacks. A lot of girls just use totes though, and some people use messenger bags like ReLoad and Timbuk2.

When I was in eighth grade a few years ago in the Northwest unisex Jansport backpacks were super popular along with some High Sierra and REI ones.

Just look and see what eighth-graders in your area are wearing!

What are some quiet, peaceful places to live in the US?

I'm a southern guy born and raised in Louisiana. Don't get me wrong, I love the south. I'm just tired of the noise of these bigger cities. Personality wise I'm an ISTJ and borderline between type A and B (if I wasn't to darn competitive I'd be a type B). I LOVE running especially trails, as well as swimming and biking (triathlete). I've always been a religious conservative but not the activist type. As far as weather goes I don't really care I've seen +2 feet of snow (lived in Oklahoma for 3 years) and many a day over 100deg. I'm always looking for some new adventure or excitement. I'm a real sucker for the great outdoors (camping, backpacking, fishing, ect...). What are some places I would enjoy? I'll be working in healthcare if that's of any use.

Answer
How about Fort Morgan, Colorado? Fort Morgan has lots of great old houses on old fashioned streets with lawns, big old trees in the front yards. A "Leave it to Beaver" type community. And it's not that far from all the beautiful great-outdoors stuff you like. The Rocky Mountains, Denver, etc. You know, John Denver's "Rocky Mountains High"! Quaking Aspens. Fishing, hiking, wild animals, camping. Conservative communities. Fort Morgan used to be a farming community raising sugar beets, among other things. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.

What other tools will I need?

Green Tea

I'm a high school freshman who plans on going into either ecology or ethology, but I want to go ahead and start learning skills that I'll need. I plan on exploring the places that I live (one is a suburban back yard, the other a camp on an island surrounded by Louisiana marsh) and I'm trying to slowly accumulate some tools that I would love to have. I'm fairly new to this, so I'm not totally sure what would be really helpful or not.
Things I have/plan on getting:
-A waterproof backpack
-Binoculars
-Compass
-Sketchbook/journal/graph paper
-Mechanical pencil, watercolors, pen
-Binoculars
-Digital camera
-Magnifying glass
-Some field guides
-Eventually a map of the island. Not essential yet since my parents don't trust me to be out of sight of the house lol

That sounds like a lot now that I'm listing it out, gosh. But it all feels pretty essential. Anyways, I just wanted to double check and see if I'm missing anything important. Any help is lovely, and thank you to anyone who answers.

Answer
Thermometer(s)
Traps of several kinds
Quadrats
Waders
Microscope (these are not as expensive as you might think), and slides

Going camping in the Sierra Nevadas. Going to rain for two of the four days. Bringing alot of games and DVD's anything else?

Answer
Wear rain gear and/or carry an umbrella and go hiking in the rain. Why stay stuck in a tent when cheap and lightweight gear is available to keep you dry and comfortable outdoors in the worst of conditions. With everyone else hiding in their tents you'll have the wilderness to yourself.

It rained every day of our backpacking trip to Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite NP last summer and my family and I stayed dry using just our umbrellas and our windbreaker jackets and these little Sierra Newts were all over the trail:

And from last fall until this spring there was rain almost every week around here and thanks to my Frogg Toggs rain suit I was able to go mountain biking every week on my day off, rain or shine.

Where is the best place to camp in the Grand Canyon with young children?

Tara O

Where are planning a trip to camp at the Grand Canyon this summer. I have a 3 and 5 year old. I also would appricate details of what kind of things we can do with small children while at the Canyon. Thank you so much!

Answer
First off, you need to decide which rim you want to visit: the North Rim or the South Rim.

Most people go to the South Rim because it is easier to reach and is more developed with more overlooks, lodges, cafes and several good-sized towns (Flagstaff and Williams) nearby. The North Rim is harder to get to, only has one lodge and no large towns nearby. Because it is a thousand feet higher in elevation, it is cooler than the south rim and closed during the winter (mid-October to mid-May). During summer, I prefer the North Rim because it is cooler and less crowded, but young kids might find more things to see and do at the South Rim.

At either rim, you only have one real camping option for kids that young and that is the drive-in campgrounds (one at each rim). They are both very similar and pretty nice with a picnic table at each site and central bathroom facilities. They are also both a ways back from the rim, which make them a bit more peaceful, but also means you either have to drive to reach the rim and overlooks or go for a fairly long walk. You can reserve campsites online and should make reservations well in advance (see links below).

Beyond the car campgrounds mentioned above, there are also primitive backpacking campsites in the canyon itself (not recommmended for kids that young) as well as camping 'at large' in areas of the National Forest surrounding the park (the better locations being on the north rim to the west of the park - but these can be tough to reach).

As far as things to do for kids at the South Rim... kids at that age are probably not going to be entranced with scenic natural views for long or up for long hikes. There is a nice free shuttle that runs along the rim from the lodges out to Hermit Rest with stops along the way and the driver telling stories about the canyon - most kids and adults would probably enjoy it. They would probably like watching the burros and their attending cowboys at the corral near Bright Angel lodge. The large patio area along the rim behind Bright Angel lodge is also a good place to see squirrels, ravens and sometimes condors (not to mention ice cream from the nearby snackbar).

There are usually a number of ranger talks each day, many of them at the Shrine of Ages auditorium near Yavapai Lodge. The park also has a junior ranger program where children go to various exhibits and talks to get stamps and win a junior ranger award. The 3 year old would probably be a bit young even for that, but the 5 year might enjoy it.

There are fewer attractions for kids at the North Rim, but it has the benefit of having more open space and less roads and traffic. There are lots of places there for kids to run around in the trees and play with pinecones and sticks (my main memories of going there as a small kid). Along the road to the Cape Royale overlook there is a nice little hike called Cliff Springs trail that would be suitable for kids that age. It goes a mile into a small side canyon to a pretty little seep spring - it is fairly level and despite the name, you are not walking along any cliffs.

I have a project where everyone in my class chooses an item or items to sell at our market. We don't use real money so it can't be an expensive item. I want to sell something inexpensive but still unique. please throw me some ideas!

Answer
Spanish Lace, when my brother lived in Spain mom sent $20 for him to get her some lace and got a lifetime supply. When he lived in Germany she made backpacks for all his kids and the entire class of the special needs child and used a couple of feet of lace on each and still had lots left. Every child got a different kind so they could tell them apart.

Spain is also known for blood oranges but that might be a hard sell.

What are some ideas on what to build for a senior project?

Brandi Gur

My daughter (the senior) would really rather build something, rather than do a creative writing, or such. Now that she has decided on this route, she is totally drawing a blank as to what it could be. Of course, she'd like it to be easy, yet fun & unique, but really isn't interested in that such as a wind turbine, etc... The project has to involve 20hrs. She's a very busy kid, as she involved in many sports, clubs, etc... PLEASE HELP!! ANY ideas are welcome!!

how much would it cost per day to backpack around Australia?

Max_Power

I'm planning on camping during the summer and staying in accommodation during the colder months...

I won't be driving so I'll need to rely on transportation like buses...

How much should I look at saving up per day?

Answer
I'd suggest around $40-50USD or £25 a day.

it depends how socialable you want to be. Hop-on/hop-off buses like Oz Experience are great to seeing the country as they pickup and dropoff at hostels and stop at all the best places en-route. If you just take local buses you're likely to miss some great things.

You check hostel and bus prices in advance to give you a better idea.

What part of Australia has the least people?

thecoastis

If I'm looking to get away from people and basically be out in the wilderness of Australia, just backpacking and camping. What part of AU should I go to? Any reccomendations?

Answer
The Outback which covers a vast amount of area. But I would say Alice Springs, But thats basically desert.

You can also try the Blue mountains in New South Wales and the Victorian Alps.

A better option for your traveling preferences would be the South Island if New Zealand. They have great untouched environments that isolates you from the rest of the human world.

Try the Mountains & fjords of New Zealand. Its breathtaking!

I mean it would be no different traveling to the other side of Australia. theres no traveling visas needed for Aussies travelling to NZ.

We are looking for a place where we can drive to a campsite, then pitch our tent. So many campsites either require you to backpack in your stuff, or they are just for you to park your RV.

Any ideas... our tent is fairly large.

Answer
I've camped on the Blue Ridge parkway, at the Smokies, at Mount Mitchell State Park, NC (you can camp at the top at the state park or there are private campgrounds below it), New River State Park, NC (there are drive in and canoe in sites), Stone Mountain State Park, NC, and I've wanted to camp at South Mountain State Park, NC.

In Hot Springs, NC the private campground is on the French Broad River, on the Appalachian Trail, has a great little town, and has hot tubs!

I've camped in NC in Nantahala National Forest , Linville Gorge, Roan Mountain, TN area, and wanted to camp in Mt Rogers, Joyce Kilmer and Shining Rock areas, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Where to find information to start hiking/climbing and other outdoors stuff?

Q. Im a 23 year old female and I want to start hiking, climbing, camping, and other outdoor activities. None of my current friends do these activities so I have no one to go with or turn to for advise.

I'm basically trying to find out what associations or groups there are that I can join.

and

If there are any magazines or websites to subscribe to.

BTW I live in Virginia

Thanks!

Answer
Virginia is a big state -- if you live near Glen Allen or near the NC border, go to one of the REI outdoor stores. Here's their site with location in the VA area.

http://www.rei.com/map/store

They offer rock climbing instruction classes and hiking and backpacking outings. They also sell and rent gear like tents, sleeping bags and backpacks. There is great rock climbing in North Carolina especially so you should be able to find lots of resources for that. Look in the phone book for independent shops that sell climbing and backpacking gear as well. Most offer intro courses and have information on local active groups.

Also look online at :

http://rockclimbing.meetup.com/cities/us/va/arlington/

This shows Meetup groups in the Arlington, VA, area. Just enter your city at the top right and any activity in the top left field (like hiking, kayaking or backpacking). These groups are a great, no cost way to connect with other people who can help teach you outdoor skills.

How to start planning an independent gap year trip to Europe?

backpack camping in england

backpack camping in england image

Alycia

Hi! I'm taking a gap year before college. My goals are to live in France, Italy, and England for a good two weeks each.

Since I'm not too keen on pre-packaged programs, I would prefer to organize my own itinerary. Problem is... I have no idea where to start. What to do, where to stay, etc.

Would anyone mind helping out? Thank you! I genuinely appreciate your time!

Answer
Prices depend on exactly where you're starting from, when you go (prices vary a lot), how long you stay, where you go in Europe, how you get around, the kind of places you stay in and what you see/do/eat. People who backpack generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget (not including airfare). However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel just for myself. You won't need to worry about the airfares.

Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you.

http://www.seat61.com/ - a great train site with details about railpasses. It can be cheaper to buy individual tickets than passes. This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combination for your trip. It also details how to use the pass and what to avoid to get the best use out of a pass. Most high speed, international and night trains require reservations and will require you to pay a supplement when you use a railpass. You need to be aware that a railpass is almost always more expensive for trains here in some places like Italy and Spain.
.
http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht... - festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. A pizza is 8 to 13 euro and a panino or wrap is around 3 to 6.50 euro in many places. You can often get food at festivals at a relatively low price. You can also shop in the markets and put some meals together for yourselves. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants.

Hey I want to know somethings about backpacking around europe and hoe much it is going to cost?

Lala

i am planning to take a month/ month 1/2 to backpack through europe before I go to college, my 18th birthday. I am currently 16 going on 17. I just want to know some things to take into account and maybe howmuch it will cost so I can start saving up. I plan to go to England for a week and then start from Portugal to where ever I end up. Any info or maybe one of your own expirence that you would like to share I will truely appreciate. Thank you.

Answer
Been packpacking first time in 1976 and visited just about all the European countries. The cost depends very much on where you travel. My son has traveled on 10 dollars a day in eastern Europe sleeping in hostels.

Travelling is not that expensive and easy to plan eurailpass for youth costs currently $634.00 for one moth travel in Austria 3, Belgium 3, Denmark 3 , Finland 3, France 2, Germany, 3 Greece 2, Holland 2, Hungary 1, Italy 2, Luxembourg 3, Norway 4, Portugal 1, Republic of Ireland 3, Romania 0 , Spain 2, Sweden 3 and Switzerland 4.

You can also extend your trip to Czeck 1 and Slovakia 0 you have to buy the train tickets, but prices of them are very reasonable and would certainly recommend Prague (old city and center price level 3 all other 1). Other Cities definately worth seeing are: Porto (take a tour in port cellar) and Barcelona maybe also Paris, Cologne, Amsterdam, Delft (Holland), Annecy (France), Berlin, Copenhagen.

I have number behind each giving idea of price level there this correspons the price level on regular towns not historic city centers etc...

4 - much higher than states
3 - somewhat higher than states
2 - states level
1 - below states
0 - way below

The main thing determining your budget is accommodation: hotel, hostel with private room annd shower, hostel without neither, camping. If you travel in the summer its a good idea to have sleeping bag and a light tent with you gives you freedom. A good way to cut cost is to take night trains you cover a lot a ground while sleeping (sleeping bag handy).

Travelling alone is not a problem in Europe even for a lady. You might get some whistles in Italy but thats about all. Having companion is also nice and cuts a bit on your budjet if you prefer private rooms (double room usually costs about the same as single). Especially in the summer you can also find companion in the trains with thousands of backpackers just like yourself and then maybe spend a week in some companion and then split. The girl from my neighbuor (19 y) did that.

Have fun and realize your dream.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a tarp instead of a tent for camping?

camping backpacks for men

camping backpacks for men image

Ruby

My dad and I go backpacking a lot and while we were hiking a section of the Pacific Crest Trail we met some other hikers who were using a tarp for a shelter, instead of the usual tent. Using a tarp is not only lighter than a tent, but it is larger and easy to set up. We've been wondering if maybe using a tarp would be better.

Answer
Ultralight backpackers such as Ray Jardine have revolutionized backpacking with the popularization of using sil-nylon tarps instead of tents.

Tarps provide ventilation which tents do not, thus reducing condensation, which dampens everything inside your tent, especially your clothing and the insulation of your sleeping system, which, especially on long trips, will leave your gear heavier and colder every day, especially during inclement weather. Tarps are lighter and offer more coverage as you've already mentioned. Tarps require no poles and can be pitched between two trees or using two branches or a combination of the two. And tarps are actually stronger than tents by weight, contrary to ignorant assumptions, because they can be pitched low into high winds, and ideally have multiple guy lines that can be staked or tied out. And there are no poles to bend or break. It's utterly laughable for anyone to state that tent poles are stronger than a couple of stout poles found in the woods: You're doing it wrong.

A couple years ago I sewed my own tarp and net tent, which hangs underneath the tarp as protection from mosquitoes, and replaces the need for a ground cloth, using Ray Jardine's tarp and net tent kit and Tarp Book, which includes all the instructions you need.

Since then my wife, daughter and I have successfully and comfortably camped under our tarp tent inside our net tent several times in the Sierras, strangely often in high winds. I have had a corner stake pull out during the night but on our last trip to Winnemucca Lake in Mokelumne Wilderness the winds were just as strong but the tarp required no adjustment during the night.

My tarp is 17.6 ounces with its stow-bag. 8 anodized aluminum stakes plus stow-bag weighs 4.5 oz. And the net tent its stow-bag weigh 11.9 oz. For a total of 2 lbs, 2 oz. for a shelter for 2 1/2, half the weight of the 2 man REI Quarter Dome with stakes. Like I said, no ground sheet needed because the net tent has a sil-nylon floor which hasn't shown much sign of wear.

We haven't had too much rain yet, but after sewing and seam sealing my tarp I set it up in the backyard and rigged up a sprinkler to test it and I have no doubts I'd stay dry and comfortable in any weather short of a blizzard.

Of course tarps are three-season use only and in winter you'd want a single wall tent but why suffer the other three seasons because you can't afford two tents when your second tent can be an inexpensive tarp.

You can read about Ray Jardine's 2009 through-hike of the Appalachian Trail where he evaluates the performance of his own tarp and net tent here: http://www.rayjardine.com/adventures/2009-AT/index.htm

Before Ray designed his net tent he used the same tarp but to protect against swarms of mosquitoes he wore a set of uncoated nylon wind-shirt and wind-pants to bed along with homemade nylon mittens and of course a head net. The wind-pants and wind-shirt are dual use of course, keeping you warmer in the wind and drier in light rain while repelling mosquitoes.

Everyone in my family has a set of wind-pants, windbreaker and mosquito head net because you can't stay in the net tent forever, and I've gone without it, sleeping with mosquitoes buzzing around my head net in the evening, and would anyway to save weight, but my family likes the comfort of the net tent.

Of course if you don't want to sew your own sil-nylon tarp with "beaks" and other features you can buy plain square tarps of various materials and weights from coated nylon to sil-nylon. I used the $60 Campmor Sil-Nylon Tarp before Ray started making his kits but it's not the best, which is sewing your own.

Here's another article on the subject: http://www.the-ultralight-site.com/backpacking-tarps.html

If you're planning to camp above treeline it's a simple matter to pick up a couple of sticks along the way and keep or discard them as needed. Better than carrying poles ALL the time.

They also make tarp poles for the uninitiated.

Anyone who's sewn their own tent, sleeping quilts and backpacks for themselves and their family and used them successfully while backpacking solo and with a child from age four to six, all over the Sierra in all kinds of weather , please stand up, otherwise you don't have a leg to stand on nor any right to tell me what I've said isn't true and what I've written doesn't work. If you don't know how to pitch your tarp in the wind or don't have the wherewithal to move your camp to somewhere more sheltered if the weather becomes unbearable you don't belong in the wilderness.

Backpacking around Italy, best month and how much money to bring?

Laura Orso

My boyfriend and I are planning on backpacking around Italy for a month. We are wondering (excluding only airfare) about how much we should save up for expenses such as hostels (not hotels), food, transport etc. We are also wondering the best month to go. We want it to be warm but we are from a rainy/temperate climate and don't want to get too over heated :p.

mid April to Mid May or September/October are great times to visit. It's cooler than the peak tourist season during the summer, but everything is up and running. It's also a little less crowded than the peak tourist season although there are always lots of tourists.

People who backpack generally can get by for $100 per day staying in cheap hostels and carefully watching their budget (not including airfare). However, if you stay in hotels, it will cost you more. I usually spend 100 to 150 euro a night for a hotel just for myself, but there are cheaper places.

This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combinatio

How much time will it take to get very noticeable biceps?

ahmad

I do 2 sets 20 reps each hammer curls 3.5 kg in each hand
i do dumbbell presses 2 sets 10 reps each also 3.5 kg
i am 14 years old my weight is 45 kg
i can't go to the gym
these are all the informations i am a starter and i will do hammer curls with heavier weight after i become stronger but right now am i doing something wrong? any tips? how much will it take to get noticeable biceps?

Answer
Chuck Norris down there is right, your triceps make up two-thirds of your arm and is very impressive to look at. Don't just focus on your biceps, I know EVERYBODY who just starts to lift weights focus on only doing curls all the time to get big biceps, I did the same, but over time your physique will look really stupid if you have lacking triceps but big biceps, I look retarded and people made fun of me in the gym asking me where my triceps were and that my arms were like a girl with tits but no ass. So make sure you fucking do tricep workouts boy!!
As for the biceps. You're not lifting heavy enough. If you can curl the weights over 15 reps you're pretty much doing nothing but toning and increasing muscular endurance. If you want to get bigger biceps or any other bigger muscles, YOU HAVE TO LIFT HEAVY. Not extremely heavy but it should be a weight heavy enough that you fail around 8-12 reps. An 8-12 rep range is KEY for building muscle. Anything over that is just for toning and endurance and is stupid. So I HIGHLY suggest you get into a gym because the weights you are using is not enough. If that is too expensive then, be smart, load up 2 backpacks with weights and make sure you weigh them to see that they are equal and heavy enough to be challenging for you.
As for the sets and the exercises. Hammer curls are excellent for bringing up your forearms and your brachialis muscle which lies under your biceps and makes your arms look big when someone looks at your from the front. Make sure you also do regular curls with a supinated grip (palms facing forward). This is gonna build both heads of the biceps. Dumbbell presses only work out your chest, deltoids, and triceps and has little to do with biceps. So make sure you do HAMMER CURLS and REGULAR CURLS for your biceps. Do about 3 sets for each exercise, of 8-12 reps. And give yourself plenty of rest. Muscles actually grow when they have time to rest and heal to grow bigger, NOT when they are being worked out. This is a huge mistake noobies in the gym make, they constantly work on the same muscle every day or every other day. Since you're pretty small and not huge yet, work out your biceps no more than ONCE a week (for example: Every monday).
But curls are just Isolation exercises (exercises that target a certain muscle). Muscles are more responsive and more likely to grow from heavy compound exercises (exercises that hit more than one muscle group at the same time) So do pullups as well, even though they are a back workout, biceps are also worked in just about every back workout there is. You can get a pretty cheap pullup bar that you can attach on your doorframe for about $20 at walmart. Or just go to your local playground and do pullups on the monkey bars, try wide-grip pullups if you can, but chinups work good too. Don't work out your biceps tooo much, there's a thing called over training and it can rip your bicep muscles and thats not good, too much of a good thing is a bad thing.
And make sure you eat in a caloric surplus (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) those are whats going to feed your muscles to grow big and repair itself faster. But this is a difficult thing to learn especially at your age, so just make sure you eat a lot ( not too much), tell your mom to cook you good meals often with meat and veggies in them. And make sure you drink a protein shake or eat something with a lot of protein in it right after you work out, your muscles are gonna need it to repair the minor damage you did to it while working out so it can heal and grow bigger than before.
and lastly, be patient but committed. It takes a long time to get muscles to grow bigger, even the biggest bodybuilders had to work for YEARS to get the body they did. So NEVER listen to the bullshit on the internet/magazines/tv about stuff saying "Get bigger arms in only a week!" it takes a while. But if you follow everything I told you to do You will definitely have noticeable arms after 3 months.
Make sure you work out other muscles as well on other days that you're not working biceps. like your chest, abs, legs, back, etc. A guy with only big arms but a small body is embarrassing.
Good luck buddy

How old should my daughter be to go camping?

backpack camping videos image

Girl due 4

and by camping I mean minimum impact, in the woods, in a tent cooking over a fire camping. (yes, I know a fire is not as good for minimum impact as a dutch oven). I am really big into camping and have been doing it for year and I can't wait to share the joys of it with my daughter, but how old should she be before I take her?

Answer
I began camping with my parents when I was 5 and my sister was 2. It started a life-long love of being in the outdoors. I know people who take babies too young to walk on low-impact backpacking trips. After all, our ancestors as children survived for centuries living in tents and huts and running free in forests and meadows and millions still do around the world. They are far safer in the wilderness than among the chemical poisons, steep stairs and sharp objects and edges of the average home. I find the wonder and delight that small children bring to their discovery of the natural world enhances the experience of the older folks around them -- usually they are happier campers than older kids who gripe about missing their TV shows, video games and cell phones.

The one clear danger to small children is open fire. Besides, if you are truly a low-impact camper you will forgo the fire and cook on a backpacking stove with butane, propane or white gas fuel. Small children tend to wear themselves out on camping trips and are sound asleep in the tents long before the after-dark fire can be built up anyway. And they rarely have patience for the long time it takes to cook on a fire. Better to scramble some eggs or make a grilled cheese sandwich, soup or oatmeal for them in a few minutes on a Coleman Peak One or Camping Gaz burner.

What is a good 4 to 7 day backpacking trip near Banff, Alberta?

Sherwood P

I'm trying to convince some friends to get away from the world for a week and come hiking and camping in Banff National park (or another park near Calgary). What are some good routes or open camping areas near there. Even a book suggestion would be great.

Answer
Have you ever thought about Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks? Two books that I have enjoyed are 1)Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks-Erik Molvar (A Falcon Guide) 2)The Insiders' guide to Glacier Including Flathead Valley and Waterton Lkes National Park. Check the included web site for information on campground availability and videos. If you go to http://nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm and scroll down to step 2 campground availability, click and you will see a map of the park with the campground locations for backcountry. And step 3 you will be able to access videos

Where did this originate? Where parents carry the kids backpack?

TS

I was with my sister picking her kids up from school (elementary) and all the OTHER parents were carrying their kids backpack. I mean A LOT of them. When did kids stop carrying their own backpacks? Is this something new? Do you think its right?

Answer
Because parents want to further pussify their kids.
The schools (in their infinite wisdom) are admittedly loading down even the tiniest of kids with heavy books, but that's still no reason for parents to carry their backpacks 50 feet to their MomMobile. Kids don't even walk any more! They get driven even if home's less than a few blocks, and now they can't even carry their own books to the minivan.
Pathetic. Not the kids, mind, they have no choice. What's pathetic is the parents who create this kind of dependence.

Parents these days won't let kids do anything for themselves because the more a kid does for themselves, the more independent they become, and the more independent they are, the less *control* a parent has on them, and total control over everything (until at least age 18, but usually it's closer to 30 now) is the current aim. It's just a sign of the times that parents can't even allow their kids the independence to carry their own bag.

I don't see it as spoiling at all. I don't think most of the kids want this kind of babying; it's the parents forcing it on them. I know that my kids at least would object if I took something as trivial as being responsible for their own things out of their hands.

Would it be weird for a 9th grader to wear this?

Alright, so I'm a freshman in highschool and I need a new backpack. Personally, I think this one is great and that it would be cute in a joke-y way if I used it:
http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/Clearance/Dickies-Dinosaur-Backpack-238401.jsp
my mother, however, thinks it's stupid. Who do you agree with?

Answer
Okay...I'm sure you were hoping for answers from other kids and not moms...but I have one son in middle school and one daughter who is a senior - so I've seen the gamut when it comes to friends / trends / etc. Now, I mean this is the nicest way...but I think the real the only question you should be asking is do YOU like it? Trendsetters don't wait to see what other people are going to do or say...they don't care. If you wear this to school, I guarantee that SOMEONE will find something snotty to say...and someone else will think it's cute, especially if you wear your clothes and accessories with confidence. When someone says they don't like something of yours, shrug and say, "Well I like it" and walk off. After awhile, other freshmen (a.k.a frosh) especially will really start to respect that independence, even if they don't admit it openly. People gravitate towards strong personalities. Does your mom genuinely not like it or is she just worried you'll get teased? I personally love anything different...not EVERYTHING different all at once (that just gets weird) but just some unique stuff thrown in. I think the backpack is cute and that the black is going to wear well, too (but that's probably another mom thing) lol. Either way, good luck in high school! I hope it's as fun as it can be (considering it's the dreaded "school") :oP

I would like to ask a question by following?

Lacramioar

Hello,
We are a family in need, my husband and me , have no income and live in child allowances, have three children, who must start school in September, and we have no money we need to buy clothes and school supplies for children, the question is next , anyone know a site where anyone can write for help , we can buy school supplies for children, or a site where , can help with school supplies for children?
Thank you in advance

Answer
I don't know of any websites but I would try calling a nearby church and asking for assistance. They usually can help or find out who can help.

Also I would look up a weekly circular from some of the stores around your area as there tend to be some pretty good deals this time of year. Where I live right now Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples all have 1 penny spiral notebooks. Office max has 10 pencils for 5 cents and crayola crayons and school glue for 15 cents. Office Depot has fifty cent highlighters, binders and glue. Staples has 25 cent composition notebooks and rulers, and 50 cent retractable pens, mechanical pencils, and plastic school boxes. Many office supply stores are offering rebates on copy paper as well making a whole ream cost as little as fifty cents! Walgreens has 50 cent dividers and colored pencils, as well as 29 cent pens and two pocket folders are 6 for a dollar. Dollar stores are also a good option. The dollar trees in my area are selling Scientific calculators for a buck, and scissors in two packs.

The real expenses are probably school clothes/uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and lunchboxes (if they don't get free lunch from the school). You can save by buying gently used clothing and backpacks from thrift stores (And its not like they outgrew every last piece of clothing either), and checking out the clearance aisles for new shoes. Or if their old shoes still fit and aren't totally trashed sometimes a good spin through the washer is all it takes, plus maybe a set of shoelaces from the dollar store. If you do purchase new shoes I'd recommend getting darker colored shoes a half size big to allow room for growth. Dark shoes don't get dirty quite as fast and look better longer. Pay-less has some good sales and right now and Walmart has several kids shoes for $10-20 a pair. If buying uniforms is too expensive contact the school, often times they have extra clothes or know of someone who can help get clothes.

Best of luck :)

My daughter is going into 7th grade. We will be going out looking for backpacks soon. ANy suggestions? DO junior highers use lunchboxes? Or is it cooler to just buy your lunch or what?

Answer
definitely not the roller suitcase type backpacks. even though they are better for the back its just not cool. majority of junior high kids buy their lunch at school in the cafeteria. a simple packback like jansport or something with a cute color that your kid likes would be good.

How do you get stains off a Jansport backpack?

Some stains are of unknown sources, but some are from pens, possibly food, dirt... a regular Jjansport school backpack

Answer
Most stains come out of my 5 kids backbacks just by being thrown in the washing machine. Spray it with a commercial stain remover first. Something like shout or spray and wash.

Do you just purchase supplies like folders/notebooks/pencils etc. or do you also buy new clothes and shoes? New backpacks or lunch boxes?

Growing up my mom used back to school as the chance to buy a years worth of everything. I however don't think my soon to be first grader needs allll that much.

Answer
we buy the folders, pencils, etc. even if we technically could scrounge them from previous years ... there's just something inspiring about a new folder or pencil that an old one just can't match. the old ones obviously don't get thrown out but get used for home projects, instead.

clothes, i buy only when needed, but since all the kids are still growing, the kids typically need new fall clothes anyway, and we typically get them right before school starts even though they'll still be wearing their summer clothes for a while longer. shoes, i only buy when they're actually outgrown or destroyed. i would replace lunch boxes at the beginning of the school year if the kids actually ask me to (on the grounds that the design on the kindergarten lunch box might be mortifying in fifth grade), but usually they don't. otherwise i only replace them when they fall apart. i bought high-quality LL Bean backpacks for my kids when they started kindergarten and my incoming ninth grader is still happily using hers.

Why do I keep seeing all these people at my school walking around with short little kids bookbags that have characters like Sesame Street and Power Rangers and all that? Is this supposed to be some kind of style, because I think it just looks ridiculous.

Can I make a trip in a RV with young children?

Luna

My husband and I are planning a trip to Estes park Colorado. He want us to rent a big RV to camp at Rocky Mountains and then travel to other areas. I am not so sure that this is what I would like us to do. I prefer a cabin, since we have a 1 and a 3 year old children. I just don't know how safe or comfortable could be traveling or camping with young children. Plus he would like to camp in a kind of semi-primitive area where we would have to use generators. There is no hook ups for electricity or water. He wants to camp at this area for a day, then move to another RV park. I know this sounds like a nice adventure but I am not sure if I want to try a new adventure with young children. I prefer a cabin.

Also, we would have to buy pots, pans, silverware, sheets, comforter, cups etc. they rent all of this but it cost $75.00 per person. I just don't want the hassle to stop by at Walmart to buy all this items that I can not bring in the plane back home.

Has anyone travel in a RV with young children? What was your experience, and woul you recommend it? Any advice would be very helpful.

Answer
You obviously did not grow up during the Great Depression. My mom raised six children of all ages while camping summers in a five by seven canvas tent.

Concerning whether you can carry kitchen utensils and sleeping bags on a plane, you should be able to pack everything you need to live for weeks in a backpack. I spent three weeks backpacking in Alaska last summer. On the flight, I checked my backpack with forty-five pounds of gear. My backpack contained my tent, sleeping bag, a sleeping mattress, clothes, down jacket, rain jacket, one week of food, a towel, a stove without fuel, a spoon, a fork, pocket knife, one fry pan, one plate, two liter water bottles, a water filter, matches, and personal hygiene products. My carry-on day pack contained headlamps, a fire starter, maps, GPS, camera, telephoto lens, computer, and journal. When I backpack, I carry more than $1,000 in gear on my back.

If you are hesitant to spend $75.00 on gear, then you should be staying in neither an RV nor a cabin. You should be sleeping in a tent. You get electricity to charge batteries whenever you get to a public library. You take a shower at a pay shower, campground shower, recreation center, or heat water on a camp stove for a pot that you wet a wash rag and pour over your head to shampoo your hair. Using a gas-powered generator for electricity is not semi-primitive. It is highly-developed, highly-spoiled, obnoxious-to-neighbors camping.

Rocky Mountain National Park is ideal for you since you do not like to camp in a natural setting. However, you will miss seeing some of the most spectacular wilderness areas that Colorado offers. National Park staff are trained to hug teddies like you and help you cope with all of the necessities of surviving in a suburban campground. Estes Park has all of the food and gear that you need within a few miles of the park entrance.

If you decide to not go tent camping, there are cheaper alternatives than renting an RV. Friends of mine tow tent trailers or hard-shell pop-ups including micro-kitchens and standard beds. Set-up is a couple of minutes for these cabins on wheels.
