ultralight camping backpack image
I'm going backpacking and I was wondering if there was something I could do to make backpacking easier or my legs. Not like doing more squats or getting bigger calves but like better form or something.
Answer
Before your backpacking trip you should train by day hiking while carrying a backpack. You can carry water bottles in your backpack so you can pour them out if the pack becomes too heavy while you train. Increase your hikes up to five miles or more, preferably on steep trails, but if all you have are city streets then do that. During this time keep track of your hydration and your nutrition needs. You'll want to drink water to prevent dehydration and snack properly to provide all-day energy. Fats provide the type of energy you need for a day long backpack. For example, dark chocolate and peanuts.

Besides that the best way to make backpacking easier is to reduce your entire load. If you bring a smaller, lighter backpack, fill it with lightweight gear, don't carry unnecessary luxuries, then you can leave your heavy boots at home, which hopefully you don't have to begin with, and safely and comfortably wear sneakers. It won't kill you to sleep under a simple lightweight plastic tarp instead of a tent. You don't want to skimp on a sleeping bag if the temps might be below 50 or 60 degrees F. And your backpack itself need not be one of these monstrous five pound plus adjustable affairs if you're only carrying a tarp, homemade alcohol stove and eating kit, food, water, windbreaker, sleeping bag, first aid kit, compass, map and emergency fire starter.

And since you asked about a fancy way to walk to save energy here's the Mountaineering Rest Step:

What do you call a lightweight sleepingbag?
Arielle K
I'm going to survival camp in year 8 and I want to get a new sleeping but the thing is that I have to carry it around for 4 days so I prefer it to be as lightweight as possible.
Can you help me out?
Please don't talk about bedrolls as they are supplied.
Answer
Look for an ultralight sleeping bag designed for backpackers. They generally weigh only a couple pounds. Backpacking sleeping bags that aren't "ultralight" are not as light but they are less expensive. Don't forget a sleeping pad; you REALLY need something between you and the ground.
